Great place with a wide variety of selections to satisfy everyone.
Great food especially the Matzoh Ball soup! Enjoyed the Brussels sprouts appetizer and the pretzel!
Dated restaurant, menu on Open Table lists breakfast which is what we went for and they don’t serve breakfast. Service was slow with one waitress working until others arrived an hour later.
New Years eve
Always friendly service. We go early at opening, so never a problem with reservations or walk in. Food this time was good but the chicken pot pie could have been better. Overall good.
Our get-together-meal was as expected. Great food, superior service. Just why we chose Max's. Zero disappiontment. Zero surprizes.
If I stay near SFO, then I have dinner at Max’s. Reasonable prices, consistently good food, great service keep me coming back. Thank you Josefina for helping me make a decision about a libation!
Nicole brought me hot water & lemon this cold rainy afternoon. Ordered turkey stuffing & mashed potatoes & gravy. Delicious hit the spot this cold afternoon. Didn’t get enough turkey on the 28th. Took a bit to go with some extra gravy for the hotel. So far my fave entree @ Max’s!
Here for thanksgiving day, and they had a limited menu...which I totally understand. However, the service and food was horrible. Extremely dry turkey..the “stuffing” was a piece of bread, and the brown sauce was just a sauce without any flavor. Portion size was great, but the food was so awful, we all didn’t eat it. We were seated and waited 10 minutes for a server to take our order. There were six of us, and they provided a basket of bread for four people...very poor attention to detail. Our water glasses were empty, and we asked for refill. They forgot. They asked if we wanted dessert, but after the subpar service and bland food...we went to get A&W to get a root beer float...which was the highlight of our thanksgiving meal.
I booked the restaurant two weeks before our visit to San Francisco and was never informed they were closing at 5pm (my reservation was for 5pm) nor that their menu would be limited because it was Thanksgiving. My husband and I were seated, but they closed the kitchen at 5pm. Not only was the service rushed the food wasn’t good at all. My husband and I had to buy more food at our hotel restaurant. We spent $50 plus at this restaurant and another $50 plus at the hotel.
Not what it used to be. Big letdown from previous experience
Came expecting great NY-stye corned beef and pastrami on rye. The sandwich was served on thin rye bread that was soggy and didn't hold the meat well. Meats tasted fine, nothing to rave about, though.
Large portions of fresh tasty home cooked food. Not the chain taste.
Very good restaurant, we enjoyed the meal. The restaurant might need to update the décor though. (It seems dated) Overall very good experience for us.
Did Max’s do away with the bread? OK the bread was not really their forte. Mauricio was a good server. I received hot water on that cold evening as requested. Took a wait for Fettuccine Jambalaya was nice & piping hot. Kind of a strange dish not Italian and not quite a jambalaya.
Changed chefs? Cutting costs? Whatever it is, this was a terrible experience. Ordered $$ Prime Rib dinners and they were very disappointing... I ordered Medium Rare, it arrived 1/4" thick and COLD. I asked for it to be heated and they gave it back to me tepid and WELL DONE. Another of our party ordered Medium and it was 1/2" thick and also cool, but they thought they would just eat it anyway after seeing what happened to mine. Best part of those dinners was the baked potato! This used to be our go-to place, but definitely disappointed us when we brought guests. Not worth the risk if they can't be dependable.
I had not been to Max’s in sometime, it looks like the quality is not up to what it used to be. Pastrami sandwich came on soggy rye and the pastrami didn’t look great. The Caesar wrap was decent but light on chicken, heavy on the sauce.
Had the Rueben, which was great, however, too pricey. : - ( My wife had the meatloaf, which was good, but the center was a little under-cooked, not something you want to see with ground meat! The kids loved their mini cheeseburgers, so at least that went perfectly! Service was excellent this time, even though I felt bad for the server who was dealing with an AMAZINGLY difficult older woman sitting behind my son. For that, he gets a 10/10.
The food was okay but not great. The kale and quinoa salad was terrible, the dressing was acrid and sweet at the same time, I'm not sure how they accomplished that. The kale was not massaged or marinated in any way in the dressing so it was pretty unappetizing, and the toppings were scarce. The fries were overseasoned but my mom liked her sandwich. We tried the brussel sprout appetizer and the latkes, the latkes were good and the brussel sprouts were okay, they could have been cooked more. The service was pretty uneven. The hostess was excellent but our waitress was terrible. She literally rolled her eyes and made a face when we asked for the sour cream off the latkes. She clearly didn't want to be there and didn't want to take our order or bring us menus or do anything as near as we could tell. The food was way overpriced for what we received and with that bad of service, we won't be back.
I used to love Max's, but it seems to have gone down a little. The servers seemed to be "bothered" whenever we needed/asked for something, like, I don't know, WATER! The portions also seemed smaller as well. I ordered the "Prime" rib, which i believe was more "Choice" rib, and for the price, it seemed like a small cut. They said it was supposed to be 10oz., but for the quality/size, it didn't really seem worth the price. My wife's ribs seemed less as well, and had very little BBQ sauce on them. We asked for a side of BBQ Sauce and some more rolls, and I could have sworn the waitress walked away giving side eye to the request. She subsequently took a while; so long that we were in the middle of asking another server when our server finally brought it out. I just want to say, if you're serving food at this price, you need to match with your service.
Lovely lunch prior to international travel
The server, Francisco, was like the old school server. He was always attentive and treated me as if I was special.
Yolanda was nice. Bread was ok. Prime rib was good not as tender as some. Baked potato with all the fixings was ok. All the fixings meant butter & sour cream?! No chives, bacon bits. Creamed spinach ok. Stuck @ the Holiday Inn displaced from home due to fire not much within walking distance unless you’re prepared for a hike to Broadway. Due to its location this Max should get a remodel & update the bread. There is so much out there be competitive. Make us come even when we’re not at Holiday Inn!
Food was just OK. Service was fine. Their signature sandwich was not as good as advertised.
Appetizer Ruben is quite big! You can have pastrami, corner beef or combo for people like me who can’t decide!
Great food and service!
We loved this restaurant and came here many times over the decades. Things have definitely changed with the new owners. The hot rolls are no longer hot - and somewhat stale. My pastrami sandwich had much less meet and the quality was not good. My wife's chicken dish was rubbery - now she knows where the phrase "rubber chicken" comes from. Her spaghetti was not good enough to eat.
Such a disappointment after all these years. Since there is no reason it should get any better we are done.
Excellent location, perfect menu with choices for everyone and delicious meals!
Always good and lots of choices to please all diners
What a perfect place for 6 of us to have a meeting about our high school reunion. There's a little area to the side that fits 10 around a rectangular table. Had I known about that before, we'd have met there more often. As it was, this meeting was our last. The staff was so gracious and helpful, and we got through the business portion and then the chitchat part nicely. Thank you to all.
Always a great lunch plenty of choices, can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches and any of their salads.
We had the club and reuben which was also very good, service was great
The food was ok. Service was mediocre.
Three in our party ordered the Asian chicken wrap everyone enjoyed it and thought it was outstanding!!
Booked via the web through Open Table. Got their on time but my family of 6 was told the only table available was in the bar area using bar stools rather than a dining table. We waited 20 minutes for a table. I won’t use Open Table again.
It wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. Dinner was ok. The turkey on the Cobb was like deli meat and the bacon wasn’t freshly made. Dessert was good. Service was pleasant.
Best. Chicken Marsala. Ever.
Awesome restaurant staff.
Max has been around for some time and it’s always my midpoint restaurant to dine at when meeting people from the South bay. The food is always great and the ambience is perfect for tourists, business people and families. Prices and value for your money is excellent.
Met up with 5 friends who we haven't seen in 40+ years!!! The wait staff was great and didn't rush us at all. I had the shrimp louie - one word - YUMMMMMM.
Requested a round table if possible and was ready with menus already at the table when we arrived:)
Other than my crazy kids keeping me from a peaceful meal, everything was great! I would say, I had the prime rib dinner, and in my opinion, it's a little overpriced for what you get. Compared to a higher end restaruant's prime rib dinner, it just seems a little too high. Again, otherwise, everything was tasty and the restaurant was good. On a side note, I do not know if it has new owners from when I first started going there, because the finish on the place seems a little lower. Example, the men's restroom has an ADA sink with a faucet that ISN'T EVE ATTACHED! Meaning, it is connected, but you can pull it up off the sink. Also, when my kids went to use it, he got a minor BURN because the cold water was turned off! I don't know if someone was a jerk and turned it off or what, but this seems like a liability the restaurant should be checking. I turned the cold water on down below, because I'm considerate of others. Things like this really display the lack of quality the restaurant is leaning towards.
