Birthday party for my wife. Good and service was excellent would definitely recommend.
Took my wife and aunt (who share the same birthday) to celebrate their birthdays on Saturday night the 18th of January, 2020 for 5:00 PM. One of my best friends and his wife also joined us for a party of 5. I chose Modern Ocean because my wife and aunt love seafood and I heard rave reviews about seafood freshness and I’d been to Modern Steak. If the quality was similar (from a sister restaurant), we were in for a treat.
Gotta start with the positives:
Customer service. From host/ess to server, to runners, to manager on duty, customer service was above and beyond. Greeted with a welcoming smile, coat check crew were great also. In fact, every interaction with an employee was top notch.
When we did have issues (keep reading) everyone was quick to try and resolve issues and overall were very, very good.
Appies we started with were warm crab bowl, shrimp wontons, and ahi tuna tartare.
Appies were a great start. All delicious. All exactly what we wanted to kick off our meal.
The surf and turf we ordered was also perfect. Shrimp was very good and Scallops were perfectly made.
My wife and friends wife both ordered the scallops risotto. The scallops were perfect. The risotto - terrible. Inedible. Mushy in parts and uncooked in others. Also tasted like vinegar was added.
Spoke w/ server and manager and were offered new items. Got the Seared Ahi Tuna and Rice bowl, with Ahi Tuna.
Seared Ahi was perfect. Great rebound. The tuna in the rice bowl however didn’t taste fresh and was very fishy. They both couldn’t eat it and even the leftovers we took home couldn’t be eaten. We didn’t want to complain a second time so we left disappointed. Bottom line, we paid over $300 dollars for our meal. We should have been wowed with the seafood...but were in the end disappointed that we weren’t able to celebrate as fully because of the food issues.
We ordered a sea bass plate but was disappointed that it was deep fried which wasted the nice and juicy fish.
Service was slow and only ok.
The recent switch from steak to seafood was a brilliant move! Oh yes, you can still get your steak but the seafood choices are what's most welcome. Who knew we farm sea bass in Inglewood? Does salmon from New Zealand compare to our west coast variety? Answer: yes it does! And the turbot from Fogo Island, well you can't beat fish from the north Atlantic. Oysters from New Brunswick, PEI (3 types) and yes Fanny Bay too. All nicely done, all delicious. Service was pleasant and attentive perhaps to a fault. But they were out of our first choice for wine so I docked them a star.
Was there for my friend’s birthday and it was amazing! I had the Manhattan with the seabass topped with king crab (I got my sea bass baked instead of fried) and it was delicious!
The setting is beautiful, the food is WONDERFUL and the wine selections are so good I took a photograph of our bottle.
The service is professional and prompt......we had a lovely dinner.
The mussels and oysters were outstanding. This was even better as the oysters were half price between 4-6 pm. We did not know that before arriving. The sea bass was good but the fish sandwich bun was soggy half way through eating it. The tempura battered fish was hot when it was placed in the bun, but the heat wilted the lettuce & the bun turned soggy. Other than that, we liked the atmosphere and the service. We will recommend this establishment to others as everything tasted fresh and looked appealing. Good job!
Good food. Amazing service.
Loved this place. Went for New Years Eve Set menu. Great service, ambiance and seafood.
Excellent food, service, great wine list and just a good atmosphere for a date night or special occasion. Will definitely be back.
We think for the date and price a champagne should have been included.
Great service! My scalloped and risotto were amazing.
The shrimp appie in wontons wrapper with sauce was crisp outside and tender inside. The seafood chowder recipe was creamy, chunky with perfectly cooked seafood bites. I wanted more!
Birthday, we wanted the experience of seafood and meat. The variety of seafood outweighs the variety of meat. Quality of the seafood was what it should be. I really don’t believe in farmed fish and most of the menu was not. I do recommend this restaurant for any occasion.
Fantastic servers, very attentive auxiliary staff, and really delicious food. We usually wait until we get to a coastal city to order seafood, but this was spectacular. Thank you!
Our service was fantastic and never rushed us. We started with the shrimp cocktail and prawn carpaccio, followed by the fish and chips and smash burger. All was amazing and full of flavour. My coworker said he’ll make all vendors take home there from now on.
Awesome way to start the holidays.
The food was great!
However, we had to wait over an hour and a quarter to receive our main dishes.
This is excessively long - Even @ Christmas time.
Great place and super service. Anytime we want seafood in Calgary, We’ll be back.
The staff was nice and the service very good. We ordered the seafood platter. The shrimp and the mussels were ice cold which totally detracted from their appeal. The oysters, the lobster and the crab legs were nice but overall I was disappointed given the price.
Truly Excellent service from Cody (and the other staff who we found out had been overwhelmed by nearly twice the anticipated service tonight). Delicious food. (Trout, risotto, pasta, and beef tartare all deeply enjoyed at the table). Great cocktails. Excellent oyster selection. And a very fun dessert (Hot Chocolate Creme Brûlée!) it was pretty perfect (save for the loud music and too bright lights @ our table.)
Date Note. The banquettes would be very fun on a cozy date night. See and be seen!
Lovely. Thanks for a great birthday. Can’t wait to return.
Birthday dinner. Server was very nice and the food was great!
Last minute plan wonderful start to a lovely evening
This is the second time we have dined here. The first was upstairs at Modern Steak and this time at Modern Ocean. Both times were phenomenal. The bartender Bobby is always exceptional--engaging and knowledgeable of the brand. The ambiance and the decor is perfection, and the food.. well, let's just say I strongly believe this is the best restaurant in Calgary.
Menu was full with lots of things We wanted to try which is unusual. Menu and setting were different. Didn’t feel like a usual CALGARY place. Food was extremely tasty. Really enjoyed all 5 dishes we tried. Server was excellent.
Our server was lovely- friendly, obliging, helpful. I know she lived in Flin Flon some years ago. Ensured we were finished in good time for going to CPO.
We will return.
Deft best tasting oysters in the city - and the BEST oyster happy hour!!!
Such a good place to bring a date.
Food was amazing. Wine was great. Service was fab
See you guys next Friday!
Amazing night. Our server was attentive without hovering during our date night. Fantastic recommendations and wine pairing selection on his part.
Horrible service. Server took our empty wine glasses without asking if we wanted anything more to drink (which we did). Then he basically disappeared, leaving us with empty plates and nothing to drink and took forever to bring our bill. Will never return and wish we hadn’t gone in the first place.
Cody definitely provides me with the best service I have ever had in Calgary! I am so impressed.
I have dietary preferences in my profile - and he acknowledged them as he sat me. He was knowledgable about all the alterations that could be done to the food WITHOUT being asked!
Food is always so yummy
I would highly recommend!!!
Can’t wait to be back
Oysters and and Prawns were great. Sea bass was very well done although the corn hash left something to be desired. Given the richness of the fish, it would have paired better with something green and or a bit lighter. Service was excellent (shout out to our waiter Sheldon for has wine recommendation). Overall a nice spot, will definitely visit again.
Went during happy hour and got the half price oyster deal. Sooooo delicious!! Would go back again!!
Some of the food was quite good, mine personally was a bowl and it was boring with small portion. It took a very long time for food to come for a group of 12 even though the restaurant was far from being full (1 1/2 hours to provide drinks and appetizers, finally received entree's). The gas was out in their soda machine, the server did not apologize and instead just took the glasses and set new drinks down without comment or check in, still flat so complained again, this time a manager removed the drinks from the bill, but still not fixed. This is not a quick place to have a business lunch and the serving standard is not great, especially for price point of food.
Our dinner was AMAZING!! The restaurant had changed their menu and my partner had been really looking forward to the dumplings... Which were no longer on it Lolol. Our server Cody went above and beyond in making my birthday dinner special.. the food is amazing and the service impeccable! I would highly recommend Modern Ocean for your seafood/oyster bar going to. Oh and they also had a signed birthday card waiting at our table ❤️❤️❤️
We had good food but some less than ideal service. We were seated in the very back of the restaurant, in the bar/club area, which was completely empty, despite there being many open tables in the main dining area. Additionally, we ordered a salad at the beginning of the meal that never came.
Modern Ocean was fantastic. All the food selections were presented beautifully and tasted even better.
Great service. Loved the half price oysters and Prosecco!
This is such a beautiful room, and the service is excellent. Food is super high quality. Its on the expensive side, but it is good to have a high-end fish shop downtown again.
This place unfortunately way over priced for what you get. We had asked the server about the grand platter and were told since it's a minimum of 2 order that we would get 2 and it would be more than enough food. Sadly, we were very disappointed in how little food came. For the $118 it was, we could have order it all separate and received more for the same amount of money. When we asked the server after why we only received what seemed to be too little, she was confused and had to asked the owner. More clarification prior to ordering such an expensive dish would be nice.
I’d have rated higher but after spending over $200 on a date dinner with my wife, I’d have hoped after the server knocked over my wife’s wine into her lap, at the very least they’d have comped our desert. (At least it’s was a white and not red or her white top would’ve been ruined. Her leather leggings wiped right up.) Simply replacing the spilled glass seemed insufficient.
Food ok. My lobster tail was overdone. Steak was cooked perfectly though. My wife’s bass was great. Green curry mussels are a must have. Not sure we’ll be back though.
Truly enjoyed the appetizers, however the main dishes were less than appetizing. Great service. Great ambiance but not worth the price.
Overall I thought it was excellent and I’m glad we decided to check it out. We were looking for quality seafood (king crab legs/scallops). The small filet steak was amazing, perfectly cooked and had amazing flavor. The scallops were great also. The king crab legs.... they weren’t fresh tasting or overly flavorful and they were smaller than expected. But like I said, overall it was a good meal. The servers were personable and friendly.
Very friendly staff from the moment you walked in, very knowledgeable as I was asking about their recommendations. Will definitely visit and recommend this wonderful place.
