Located in San Francisco’s Design District, Niku Steakhouse is a meat-focused restaurant, highlighting an in-house dry aging program, exclusive cuts of coveted Japanese A5 wagyu with an emphasis on wood fired cooking.

Niku, by the Omakase Restaurant Group, hosts a dining room oriented around a roaring custom binchotan charcoal and wood-fired grill, where guests watch as Executive Chef Dustin Falcon (Lazy Bear, The French Laundry) and his team prepare steaks to perfection. At Niku, there is a true marriage of American and Japanese sensibilities. Falcon’s cooking is driven by the terroir of Northern California — which finds its way onto the menu through foraged ingredients and products from local farmers — met with the highest quality domestic and A5 Japanese Beef.

    The food was delicious, but we were seated 30 minutes late and while we were trying to order drinks at the bar, the hostess came to us and told us to leave the bar area. It was really offputting and unexpected for a restaurant of this caliber. The dinner service was fantastic, but the restaurant failed to offer anything for making us wait so long for our table. We had at least 5 different people apologize for the wait and thank us for our patience, but I think offering a drink or two or a dessert on the house would have gone a long way to show this isn't typical business. Overall I enjoyed the experience but it is not worth $550 for 2 people.

    An exceptional restaurant top to bottom. The staff and service are impeccable and the food is outstanding. The pig ears are so good you can’t stop eating them, the ginger scallion rice is delicious and the steak is perfectly cooked. A genuinely great meal and I highly recommend it to one and all.

    Absolutely incredible! We were greeted by the Sommelier Nick who brought us to our table and explained the menu. There were 4 of us and based on his recommendations for food and wine we scored and really appreciated all his help! For dinner we shared and started with the Bone Marrow, Steak Tartare, Oysters and Parker House Rolls. As the main course we shared the special "Drunken Wagyu" and Rib Eye. Each was cooked to perfection and we had leftovers for the next day. We chose Crispy Potatoes & Maitake Mushrooms. The Miso Creme fraiche that came with the Potatoes was divine. Dessert we shared an Olive Oil Cake that had 3 different preparations of Pineapple. It was the perfect ending to the meal. Thank you for having such a great Sommelier who made this evening extremely special! Alex

    Wonderful dining experience start to finish. It was a crowded Friday night, but the front desk kept their cool and patience and made everyone feel welcomed and taken care of. Once seated, Preston was an incredible guide for the evening! He helped us navigate the menu, offered suggestions and made sure our dietary restrictions were communicated to the kitchen. Course after course was just lovely! The best fish starter I’ve ever had, best potatoes and rice I’ve ever had and a 1st rate steak. We requested a window seat and the noise level was perfect, just lovely enough for a small Dining room. The staff was attentive, but they didn’t hover or rush us. It was a relaxed, entertaining, delicious and elegant evening in the City. Well done Niku!

    First off, the service was impeccable. The staff were amazing and made sure our experience was memorable (and tasty). I can’t recommend the place enough based on the service alone. The food was also great and we ordered multiple items to share, which was easy to do and made the experience feel “fuller” because we got to try lots of different things. Highlights include the pig ears, the eggplant, the wagyu, and the mousse dessert. And the potatoes were excellent, as well.

    Great experience and excellent food. Only point i didnt fully appreciated are their choice of wineglasses. They will serve you bold wines in universal glasses while bigger glasses would be more appropriate to air and easy of drinking.

    Tonight, we indulged in a culinary experience at Niku Steakhouse in San Francisco that was nothing short of exquisite. From the very first bite, it was clear: the food transcends ordinary delight, charting its own territory in extraordinary flavor. Among the steaks I've savored over the years, the one at Niku easily contends for the top spot. Our meal commenced with two distinct appetizers: a creatively crafted eggplant dish and a fresh, vibrant salad. Both set high expectations for what was to follow. The main event, a 6oz. A5 steak, was exceptional, its rich flavors and melt-in-your-mouth texture affirming its premium quality. Accompanying sides of perfectly roasted potatoes and crisp shishito peppers complemented the steak beautifully. However, our experience was blemished by an unusually long wait for our main course. Despite the restaurant's evident bustle, a two-hour wait in a fine dining setting felt disproportionate, even misplaced. Patience was tested, though the staff's politeness was constant. Redemption came in the form of dessert--a brownie so divine, it bordered on celestial. It dissolved any lingering frustration, leaving behind a sweet aftertaste and fond memories. Would I return? For the food, a resounding yes. Yet, a note on expectations: when an evening's fare ventures into the realm of $600 plus tip, one anticipates service that mirrors the excellence of the cuisine. While the culinary journey at Niku was largely unparalleled, there remains room for improvement in harmonizing the service with the establishment's high calibre. The symphony of a perfect dining experience requires both elements in concert.

    Everything we order was delicious ! Great service but unfortunately they ran out of a dessert cocktail for the birthday boy and looking at pictures of previous black sesame ice cream that was order I was a bit disappointed they charge $7 for a plain small scoop of ice-cream😝 Overall gorgeous restaurant with amazing staff and on the point food !

    I love the service provided by the staff. They were super attentive to our needs and went a great deal to make sure that our table is taken care of. The wine that the staff recommended went well with the steaks that we ordered. We ordered Prime Ribeye, New York steak, and Filet Mignon, all cooked medium rare. For starters, we got the beef tartare, halibut, and the bone marrow. The bone marrow and beef tartare were AMAZING! We will definitely be coming back to Niku Steakhouse!

    Wow out of all our times here this was the worst experience and possible one of the worst dinners. From the first course coming 40 mins after we placed the order to the insanely chewy antelope or the lack of service. Too many to list but if there is a person in management who cares enough please reach out.

    The food is the most flavorless beef and wagu I ever tasted. Ingredients were good and texture of the meat was done right but the execution of flavor was horrible. Staff was attentive but the way they ran around like headless chickens made me feel like their system was a bit disorganized. @$400 bucks for a tomahawk (non-A5) and 3 oz A5 Hiroshima Wagu, I expect a bit more flavor and seamless experience.

    I cannot express how happy and satisfied my family was coming here. The moment we walked into the door, we were greeted and treated with hospitality. From the front of the house, to the food service and waiters, and to the back of the house; the customer service was impeccable, organic and down to earth. It made the experience of enjoying our meal all that easier and better! The food is so delicious and the drinks were legit- spot on! Order anything on the menu and I promise you will not be disappointed. We will be definitely coming back here.

    PROS: Very delicious and curated selection of food. Nothing too pretentious or unapproachable. Most diners were dressed between casual, semi-formal, cocktail, to business so you kind of make it what you want. Servers are very attentive, and knowledgeable with their recommendations (Chris gave us the most attention/help). Some free extras like a one bite taster, and some bubbly and a fancy cupcake for our anniversary. The food is very staggered and it almost comes out as a three course meal (starters, steak and sides, dessert). They clean your table between each portion and give you new plates. Devil in the details: The host came back to our table with a tableside purse hanger as they noticed the lady brought her purse and hung it on the chair. They pour all the drinks for you tableside. Smaller things like I hadn't put the cloth over my legs yet and they carefully draped it over for me; they even folded the cloth over while my parter went to the restroom ad they noticed it was crumpled to the side. You definitely feel pampered/monitored in a good way. Patient. We closed out the restaurant clocked in a 3 hour dinner. Even then, they made sure we could still enjoy our dessert and wrap up our conversation without any real looks of rush. CONS: The steaks came out a bit cold. We didn't realize why it wasn't as soft as it should be until after thinking about why it wasn't (mostly speaking of the Tomahawk). For what you pay for and it being a steakhouse, the internal temperature is obviously important but the serving temperature is just as crucial...not sure if the steak sat there a bit before it came to our table but we were expecting soft warm bites. Price can be steep for what you get and especially may feel even steeper when things feel off with your food but fortunately our experience with the steak wasn't too off. I think you have to come with the mindset of not only food but ambience and service included in the pricing.
