Not Your Average Joe's Silver Spring
It was a nice experience, a few people in my party were not impressed with their food
Vegetarians should avoid this restaurant. Ordered the IMpossible burger, took one bite and knew a mistake had been made. Was served contaminated meat instead (either cooked in animal fat or actual animal product). Server took it away and initially agreed that it wasn’t an impossible burger. She came back 7-10 min later and said she “tasted” my burger (ewww) and had a picture and it was impossible meat. She had something in her hand that I’m not sure was even my original food. I’ve been a vegetarian for over 30 years and I’ve had several IMpossible burgers, I know contaminated food when I’m served it.
New menu...easier to read
Good food at a good price. Lots of unique dishes. Good sized portions.
Everything from beginning to end, aside from the service which I would consider just okay. We have a one-year-old who naturally has little patience so as soon as we sat down, we ordered his food. Our server who repeated the order (incorrectly 2-3 times, because she didn’t write it down) still failed to put in the order. When it came out, it was 1/2 incorrect. Thankfully the manager brought it out correctly but then we were charged for the mistake. Once I flagged it, they removed it from the check immediately. I found that it could have just been a much better experience if our server would write down the orders because this way we could all avoid this uncomfortable situation. We were overall not in love with our dinner experience but we are grateful for how open they were to fixing the situation.
I would have understood if the restaurant was crowded. I would have understood if they were short-staffed. None of those things happened. If they had, we would have given them the benefit of the doubt. The manager said it was a timing issue with the kitchen. We gave it 40-45 minutes and told them we were leaving.
We received one round of cocktails and nothing else. No water. No bread, because the kitchen messed up the bread once or twice and the wait staff wasn't going to serve raw bread. No asking if we needed a cocktail refill. The manager did try to make up for it by giving us a comparable gift card and the waiter did apologize. The kinks need to be worked out of the system.
Went there for a special birthday dinner with family. Service was fine. Liked the variety of dishes. But noise level was too high.
another.! A gem in Silver Spring. Have seen it 100s of times from the street. High time to eat there.
Family friendly with a good selection for the kids. But food is average. Service was extra slow. Waitress was nice but she just took forever to take our order.
Love the good food and good atmosphere, great happy hour! would love to go back
This is a great place for a quick drink or meal. Menu has a lot of variety and different price points. The Margherita pizzas we had on this visit were not quite to our taste, a little too moist and sweet. The drinks were great. Would visit here more often if not for the parking situation--the closest garage, about a block away, can be confusing, and sometimes it is full, especially on weekends.
The food is always surprisingly good at Joe’s. The bread/focaccia with Parmesan olive oil dipping sauce is AMAZING. They also have an awesome selection of nonalcoholic beverages. Service was attentive and helpful, and it wasn’t too loud because it was the middle of the week and not crowded. If they would only turn down the volume on the music it would be perfect. All in all a nice dinner out with the family.
It was our first time. We enjoyed it very much. We've never been a fan of tv's at a restaurant, so didn't like all the tv's in the bar being so dominant at the restaurant, but that's the way it is these days. We'd definitely go back again.
Very nice menu selections, service, and atmosphere. The drinks arrived cold and the food hot. They offer full- and lunch-size portions during lunch. Also has convenient parking garage next door. A bonus for downtown Silver Spring.
Was had a wonderful dinner! My daughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease and they were extremely accommodating. They brought her gluten free rolls and they had a separate gluten free menu! And we all enjoyed our dinners. We will definitely return!!
I ordered a burger instead of the fish and chips at the suggestion of the waitress because I would get a larger portion. Well, I ended up finishing the burger in three bites, so imagine how small a serving the fish and chips would have been (the fries were good, though). Next time, I'll order something else. Overall, the service was good, and other than being small, the burger was tasty, as were the All-American Mules I had. Since I live so close to NYAJ, I will be coming back.
Lots of fun and great new summer dishes to enjoy!!
Overall nice experience
Our waitress straight up left after putting in part of our order...as in left the building and never came back...Mark the manager appoligized for the confusion/delay in getting the food and handled the situation TERRIFICALLY. YaYa the new server rushed our order and got everything out as fast as they could. We were so impressed with how everything was handled. They have a wonderful wait staff there and the food is great too! Could not recomend more.
Food was bland. Service was ok but food and drinks took longer than expected and restaurant was not busy at all.
Our table was a circular booth, very spacious for the 5 of us. The service was attentive, but not pushy. We loved the variety of choices. We never felt rushed, had plenty of time for conversation. We'll be back!
Everyone was pleased with their meals. Our server was attentive but did not rush us. I would go back again.
The food and service were excellent. 10/10 would go again.
We usually enjoy our meals here, but some recent menu and recipe changes have us thinking about not coming back. My wife has to eat gluten free and NYAJ’s gluten free menus had some of her favorites. But, some of the GF meals went through a recipe change that totally changed her meals. The chicken piccata for one went from grilled chicken over penne to breaded chicken over linguine. It appears that NYAJ is short cutting their meals. Now the only difference between the chicken piccata and chicken parmigiana is the sauce. Both the manager and server handled my wife’s displeasure fine. They had the kitchen make her meal the old way, but with the changes could not guarantee this in the future. These menu/recipe changes are a poor decision by NYAJ. We hope they can go back to the original recipes, otherwise, we’ll begin going elsewhere.
The food was very good. I had the Vietnamese Salmon Bowl which was supposed to be spicy, but wasn’t. The other diners in our group enjoyed their entrees. My wife and I split the Strawberry Shortcake which was light and was served with Vanilla ice cream. The restaurant is moderately loud for conversation but most places are like that these days. All in all, a good experience.
Took 30 minutes to get our drinks. Sirloin tips that were ordered medium rare came out medium well. Disappointing sums it up
Restaurant has been a favorite since it opened a few years ago. Brunch was very limited in its menu and, for some reason, the food took forever to come out. Moreover, the fact that the food did not come out first for the children was also frustrating.
For a solid meal, this is the place! From the yummy coconut shrimp to the Super Crunch salad or Scallop dinner, there's nothing average about Not Your Average Joe's. We happened upon this place accidentally and were thrilled that we did. Though not usually bread eaters, we couldn't stop dipping the bread in the tasty olive oil & cheese, as we waited for our drinks. This place has a fun vibe whether eating inside or out. Will definitely return the next time visiting the area.
Our waitress was very attentive. And our food was great.
The food was everything, the server was great and the location was perfect. I will definitely be back.
This location was just okay. The food was good but the service left me thinking twice about returning. The hosted who seated us forgot to bring the requested highchair twice. The server gave my daughter a alcoholic beverage instead of the tea she ordered, she forgot to bring my water until I reminded her. We split checks and she collected mine but kept asking where the other check was, umm it's not mine ask the other guest you gave it to. I'll probably visit the Bethesda location but this one is lacking.
Food: Everything we ate was delicious, my mom-n-law said hers was salty but she's sensitive to salt. I highly recommend the Bedford Scallops.
UPDATE: The GM Jimmie reached out to me immediately after my review on Yelp not only to apologize but he offered a gift card and he wanted the servers name to coach her on how to provide a better customer experience. I appreciated this and will give this location another chance.
The food and service were excellent. We were pleasantly surprised. We would definitely go back.
Everything about this restaurant was average, if you will pardon the pun. The menu was average. My vegetarian friend had limited options. The food was ok but nothing too special. The server brought the check before asking if we wanted dessert. With so many dining options in Silver Spring, I will never return to this restaurant.
Very good lunch experience!!! Loved the cucumber twist!
I found the experience pleasurable for all of us! The atmosphere was positive and our server was great.
Had terrific service on a busy Thursday night. The menu and food live up to the name with various ethic dishes mixed in with more mainstream choices. The ethnic dishes were not overly authentic, but very tasty in their not so average interpretation. We enjoyed the Thai Beef noodle Bowl, Hoisin Salmon Salad, and Vietnamese Salmon. All were excellent!
Our party of two was seated immediately for a 7:45 PM reservation. Restaurant appeared to be about half full, and conversation was easy. We were immediately greeted by Franklin, who provided excellent service through our stay, at a perfect pace.
My companion ordered the chicken sandwich, and opted for greens. I ordered the Thai Beef Salad. The chicken sandwich was said to be delicious, and the greens fresh but totally uninspired. At this price point, I would expect to see a small salad offered vice simple greens and dressing. The Thai Beef Salad was flavorful, with fresh ingredients and a generous portion of beef cooked exactly as ordered. Unfortunately, 2/3 of the beef serving was really tough. No complaint was made. Purchased drinks and water were refilled appropriately, throughout the stay.
Made reservation, table was waiting as we arrived. Service excellent, food on point, perfect experience
Good food, horrible service. Waited 20 minutes after being seated to get drinks. Took 48 minutes from the time we asked for the check, until I finally went up and asked the hostess to take my card. Spoke to the manager to ask him to take the auto tip off, explained why and he took it off but made no apology for the poor service. We won’t be back.
