Oliveto Café & Restaurant
First time here and a little disappointed-because of the food. The octopus in the pasta was tough and the sauce was greasy as in a separated sauce. I sent it back.
The Foie Gras on brioche would have been more effective if the brioche was a bit more toasted and the Pate was not already on the bread.
The soup wasn’t a bad soup but it boasted zero flavor😳
The service was outstanding!
I've eating at Oliveto a number of times. Our recent visit was disappointing. The special carrot soup tasted like spaghetti sauce. My ribeye entree was lukewarm. When I asked to have it heated, it came back just shy of warm enough. I was too embarrassed to ask to have it heated again. My mojito was very bad.
I will start at the beginning....we were here to celebrate my daughter's birthday and engagement. We brought our special wine from home.
The server was less than happy and outright kind of nasty. She never smiled, never even said her name. Was she annoyed we brought our own wine? Not a smile. We had never been here to we did ask several things about the menu especially some of the items in Italian or other....
I didn't like that there were NOOOOO substitutions whatsoever. My daughter wanted Ravioli but without the lobster on it and possibly the Bolognese. I have yet to be at any restaurant in my entire adult life where there were no accommodations made. When we asked about the Brussel sprouts on the appetizer menu we were mistaken and again, we were ok but for goodness sake, be nice server. Your tip in my opinion was what I would have given her had they not added one for 4 of us. OH....did I mention the corkage fee was 25 per bottle...We aren't discussing a Michelin star restaurant. On my way home I said I should have taken the second bottle and opened it myself and swapped it out. We have many fine establishments in and around Walnut Creek and $15 is average. Sometimes if you're ordering for 4 at the cost of a fine restaurant, they may just open the second complimentary.
Another thing, again in my adult life, never, ever have ever had to pay for bread and butter and by the way, if you are 4 people, two pieces equal a slice of bread at any other venue.
Must say that the ribeye steak was superb. The Dopio Ravioli.....was subpar. I make homemade ravioli and the missing ingredient was the stuffing....Mostly dough.
The regular pasta bolognese my daughter's fiancee ordered he said was delicious. The flourless chocolate cake was incredible.
To sum up, I am not so sure what all the fuss is about this restaurant, so not sure we'd try it again....maybe????
Always gave great food and service. Our server was delightful and friendly. My go to place to celebrate anyone’s birthday!
Menu was a nice change from typical high end restaurant. Food a bit more exotic and very good. The entree portions were a bit small but sufficient. I recommend this place and will return.
I was a bit disappointed with the two starters we got. The Brussels sprouts and duck confit.
Excellent service, a good choice of menu options and dishes that ranged from very good to outstanding. Their country pate was really excellent - the best I’ve ever had, and the pavlova dessert was equally sublime. We tried three of the pasta dishes; all of which were very good. The orecchiette with mixed seafood was the top pick.
The ambiance is very pleasant and the wait staff is highly competent and cordial.
Delicious from bread, to soups to pastas to desserts. Everything home made and fabulous. Will come back.
Beautiful restaurant. Came highly recommended and they did not disappoint.
Overall it was ok, though the salad was served on a much too small plate and wasn’t mixed, so when we mixed it, it fell off the plate and all over the table. Also, the kitchen forgot the main ingredient in our farro dish, the mushrooms, so we had to ask the waiter to bring them out separately, as that was the reason we ordered that dish in the first place. Along with the mixed fall vegetables that weren’t in season at all and not very diverse. Asparagus and red peppers.
The dishes were fairly inspired; worth of inclusion in the Mercury News' top fifty list that led to our visit. We started with sourdough bread and fig glazed duck pate, and followed up with pasta. For dessert we had a tart apple crostada, and tea, which came in a tetsubin cast iron pot. Everything was well prepared, and served in a timely manner. Speaking of service, one of the staff let us change our toddler's diapers in her office since the bathroom had no changing station. We knew it was not a "family" restaurant, so we appreciated that.
Food was awful. Menu selections were unique but combinations didn’t work. Our server interfered with conversation and cleaned our table during important conversation. We felt invaded by her attempts at being helpful.
Going away party
This restaurant has been consistently excellent over the years and hasn’t lost its touch.
The food and service are consistently excellent. I try and eat there every time I am in town.
The serving portions, especially the main course, were unbelievably small
Another fantastic experience dining at Oliveto's. We brought relatives from the East Coast and they were very impressed as well. The preparation, ambiance and delicious choices make it a wonderful experience. You can also tell that they have taken great care with the restaurant itself, especially with the acoustics - our party of 4 could hear each other and even though the room was full, it was not noisy. The art work is also lovely - making everything a wonderful experience. The main reason that we go is for the delicious food, but the fact that the restaurant has such a wonderful atmosphere makes this a great place to eat and especially to bring guests from out of town.
Really fantastic food. We celebrated my husband’s 51st birthday with family. Loved our server she was very knowledgeable about the food and the wine.
The ambiance and noise level were great, especially due to the special noise-reducing technology used in the restaurant. I could actually hear my tablemate speaking to me! Other restaurants should take note.
What missed the mark were the two sand dab dishes ordered. Sand dabs are so delicate, they should not be gussied up in a salad that tastes more like potatoes and vinegar than the fish. Since I ordinarily love sand dabs so much, I doubled down by also ordering a pasta dish wherein they supposedly held the place of honor. Shame on me! I should have known better than to order sand dabs any other way but simply and quickly sautéed in butter with lemon..
I think I will go back to Oliveto's again, and order the simpler dishes. Someone was trying too hard with the sand dabs and guided the lily.
Ambient was very nice and the people incredible but the food portions were small and very expensive for the amount you paid.
Wonderful pasta lunch. In addition new pastry/dessert chef is amazing.
Wait staff was attentive but not in your face. The tomato dish was unbelievable!
My nephew was in town for business meetings, and we met for dinner during the Tomato-Specials Menu timeframe. Every course was delicious and creative.
Wonderful food and setting. Service was very good too. Love the homemade pasta and fresh veggies.
In all fairness, there was a street fair outside the evening we went for dinner. Maybe they were short staffed. Our server was friendly and nice but the service in general at the restaurant was slow. We had salads of greens and each had a pasta dish. Unlike the tender pasta I’ve had at many “higher end” Italian restaurants, I had to use a knife to cut a vegetarian pasta. Perhaps the cafe is preferable to the restaurant so next time I’ll try that.
We were lucky enough to enjoy the final night of Oliveto's Tomato series dinner, it was spectacular! Service was amazing, wine was spectacular, the food was delicious. Thank you for a wonderful date night!
Tomato Dinner! Wonderful!
Tomato dinner, great!
We have always enjoyed Oliveto, but the last year has been particularly satisfying, due (we think) to a new chef. But we'd have to say that the Tomato Dinner this year was comparatively disappointing, though still a fine and pleasant evening. The sliced tomatoes weren't as good as last year! The tomato dishes were less tomato-y. That said, Oliveto is still among our favorite restaurants, and we recommend it (generally) with great enthusiasm.
Lovely quiet lunch with friends. If only the pasta had been served with something to contrast with the heavy, dark, over-sauced pasta bolognese. Composed salads were fabulous as were the deserts.
The setting is lovely, space between some tables is quite ample, waitress good. Both plates of food were mediocre, some pieces of steak tough, my bolognese was mediocre. Dessert great. Would love to return if we could find some oof dishes.
Service was very slow, took a half hour to take our drink order, and another half hour to order food.
The menu is a pleasant and huge improvement over the old menus. There is more variety and the dishes are outstanding. Thank you
As the unused wine glasses were being taken away, one broke. To guarantee that no glass was left behind, our water glasses, bread/butter , olive dish and most silverware were also taken away. I had to ask for replacement of some of the items. We had a 9year old with us and she asked three times to have her paper straw replaced after it disintegrated. She finally walked to the bar and asked the bartender for a new one. Our food was great. We all ordered different starters, mains, and dessert. Some sharing was done and everything was beautiful in presentation and taste. It was a busy night however with a child at the table, I was hoping for a more timely service and meal. Our meal took three (3) hours from seating to leaving. Way to long for young adults unless they are attached to a mobile device which we don't allow.
Seems a bit overrated to me. Food was just ok.......
Our first anniversary dinner was just Ok. Server Cecilia was wonderful, but couldn't make up for halibut that was overdone and dry. Grilled chicken and arugula salad very nice, beets gazpacho pleasantly different. Peach tarte tasty but miniscule.
I expected to be wowed at Oliveto, but wasn't.
WE HAVE DINED HERE FOR MANY YEARS. IT IS THE FIRST TIME THE FOOD WAS NOT ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT. THE HALIBUT WAS "OK" (CERTAINLY NOT EXCEPTIONAL). THE NEW YORK STEAK WAS SO TOUGH IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CUT WITH A SHARP KNIFE. NO KIDDING.
OH WELL THE SOUP AND DESERTS WERE GREAT.
I CLICKED I WOULD STILL RECOMMEND SINCE I ASSUME OUR LAST EXPERIENCE WAS AN UNUSUAL FLUKE.
Usually great food. This dinner was not over the top but solidly good.
The food was wonderful however the service was not great. Very impersonal never asked us if we even like our dinner.
Wine, halibut and service were outstanding. However, the pasta was just ok. The quiet and understated ambiance was disturbed by patrons at the table next to us who let their phone ping over and over again. Staff was gracious and relocated us to another table. It's not the restaurant's fault, but I'd vote for a policy of checking phones at the door.
