Very good food with an imaginative menu. Not many , if any places like it in Rogers Park. Great addition to the neighborhood. Nice place for a special dinner
Excellent food and service! The staff even signed a menu to wish me a happy birthday.
We had a delightful evening. The food was both delicious and inventive. Fresh seasonal ingredients used in unique ways. The atmosphere is lovely and you can easily have a conversation with friends. I highly recommend Onward for a great dining experience.
The food tasted great, we all agreed we would definitely come back for the food. The menu was written in a slightly pretentious way, and for goodness sake, who charges for bread and butter in Rogers Park -- but the food is much better than the menu seems. Service was uneven with a 10-minute gap between serving 3 dinner plates and the 4th. Wine service was minimal. Had a looooong wait to get the bill. The servers were all very friendly, just perhaps not trained well enough. Ambiance is a bit weird -- super high ceilings and generic furniture like the lobby of a hotel (which it is). Very noisy, even with not all tables filled. All of that said, the restaurant is a welcome addition to the Rogers Park dining scene, the food is very good, and we will be back.
I have to hand it to the management at Onward. I had complained about the service in my last review and their response was lights out! The manager came out and introduced himself and apologized. We had a great meal with great service! Thanks!
Generous portions, great value, inventive dishes. This place is a gem.
Neighborhood gem. Friendly attentive service and conversation friendly atmosphere. Attractive and comfortable seating. Great food and good value. Easy street parking
Our meal at Onward was unexpectedly amazing. We'd heard great things but we're still surprised at how great our meal was. So nice to have this gem in the neighborhood.
We are Loyola season basketball ticket holders and enjoy going to Onward before games. The food is consistently good, the service is not. This visit the service was really sub par. The restaurant was not anywhere near full, yet the service was very slow. It took a really long time to get our cocktails, in particular. I had cioppino, which was good (could have used more or bigger pieces of sausage) but of course had many shellfish in it. I asked two times for a plate or bowl on which to place the empty shells and never received it. Again, we enjoy the food, but the poor service is going to drive us to look for alternative restaurants.
A quiet little restaurant, it should be more crowded as the food is interesting and quite tasty but still approachable. Our server was great, very attentive without hovering. Will definitely go back.
Great food, really slow service.
Onward is definitely a neighborhood gem! This is my 2nd visit and still very much impressed. Food is very tasty and creative. Service is fantastic, everyone is very attentive and servers pay attention to small details. I will definitely be back!
A POT OF TEA SHOULD NOT COST $6! THERE WAS NO PRICE LISTED ON THE MAIN MENU, JUST ON THE BEVERAGE MENU, WHICH WE NEVER SAW.
Excellent from start to finish.
We were seated immediately upon arrival, and were treated to a birthday champagne aperitif.
The menu was creative, thoughtful, and appetizing. Three of us shared small and large plates, from the homemade duck pasta ragu, to the deliciously seasoned bread, and fresh green salad; the medium rare, tender flank steak was perfectly prepared, and we topped off the meal with a spiced apple pie a la mode!
Superb wine selection and a lovely room that is conducive to a private dining experience.
This may be the best value in the city.
This is the 2nd time I have eaten here, and it is definitely worth the trip from Old Town. Very enticing menu - and the shrimp tacos were very flavorful. Generous but not over-whelming portions. There were 5 of us, so It was fun to share and sample the other extremely good dishes. Very attentive & knowledgeable wait staff.
cozy & warm & kind. a perfect neighborhood spot with high quality food & impeccable service
Came for brunch to celebrate my parents anniversary, which was ignored by Onward. Food was great as always, but not sure how well the place was doing - 11am for weekend brunch and we were one of two tables.
I am so pleased that Rogers Park has a restaurant of this caliber. The servers remembered my wine preference, and brought it right to the table. They were knowledgeable and attentive, but not hovering. I have not had a bad experience here!
We chose Onward for our Anniversary dinner because it was something new for us and close to home. We were so pleasantly surprised with overall experience. The Ambiance was modern, welcoming and cozy. Hostess was very attentive and sited us at the corner romantic table. Cocktails were unique and food was delicious. Server was very attentive and knowledgeable, helped us to make some great choices. We will definitely be back!
Excellent food and superb cocktails. Ambiance isn't much from the outside, but it's quite pleasant once you're inside. It's pricey, but everything tasted high quality,so I wasn't disappointed.
The Food is fantastic. The descriptions of the dishes sound a bit "out there", but I am so impressed at the flavors and presentations. We all tried each others appetizers and main courses and were not disappointed.
We had the diver scallops, chicken liver mousse, Bavette Steak, farm greens with peaches, mushroom soup, saffron farfalle and each dish was better than the one we had just devoured.
The wait staff was knowledgeable and delightful to deal with, I highly recommend.
Nice brunch. Excellent friendly service. Went with the family for brunch and we will come again!
Our waiter (he wore a pineapple pin, idk his name) was fantastic and ensured that our group had a truly outstanding experience!
I love Onward and am so happy to have it in the neighborhood. The food is delicious and the room is lovely. The service is always earnest.
I'm a bit surprised at the other reviews I saw of this place; I think it's being graded on a curve because it's in rogers park.
The food was fairly good. The duck sausage, which I was excited about, was either over cooked or just cooked too quickly, so it was chewy and rubbery. The melon carpaccio was spectacular, definitely my favorite from the evening. The blackened scallops were pretty good, though slightly overcooked.
The wine list was lacking. It isn't terrible, but nothing too exciting. It didn't really play toward value or the extravagant, but a lot of middle-of-the-road wines.
They have the restaurant set up into two separate sides, a bar with high-tops on one side, and a traditional dining room on the other. We sat in the dining room, which looked elegant and well designed, though it was unfortunately loud. Our servers were very kind, which was good, because they needed to make up for otherwise poor service (forgetting to take our food orders, for example).
Overall, I think onward has potential, if they can get their staff more training, and maybe hire a quality somm to run the wine list. I'll come back to try their brunch some weekend, and given how close it is to my work, might try coming by for lunch at some point.
Fabulous to have a great chef and reasonably priced food across from Loyola!
Food was pretty unremarkable, pastries we're good. Service was welcoming and attentive.
Food and service were fabulous. Regular hot tea was extremely pricey at $6.00.
Great meal and service!
Delicious! Outside of my normal price range, but I had a gift card, which was perfect. Everything my partner and I ate was wonderful, both tasty and beautifully presented, and all of our servers were super attentive. Plus, the space is gorgeous.
Excellent meal. We were the only ones in the standard dining room for an early dinner on Saturday night. The service was excellent, the meal was excellent and the atmosphere is excellent for a nice dinner out near Loyola University.
Had a group of 20 having lunch earlier in the day before my son's wedding that evening. The place is beautiful! Kelly helped me with the accommodations and the service was Fantastic! Everyone said the food and drinks were Great! Thanks
What a hidden gem! This was among the best dining experiences ever. We did the “Farm Bowl” w drink pairings, and it was exceptional. The culinary art here—from selections to preparation to presentation—is top shelf. Every dish was perfectly balanced and total eye candy. Incredible flavors and textures...this is a five star meal in an unassuming setting. We will definitely be back.
This is one of a very small number of restaurants in Chicago where you can have a nice meal and not have to shout at your table mates. Service sometimes is a bit slow, but well-meaning.
Onward has great food, very attentive staff, and good ambiance. Great place to unwind after work. Would definitely recommend checking it out!
Great food and wonderful flavors.
The bread basket is amazing.
Onward is fabulous! The food is spectacular, and the service is amazing. We've been there more than once and always had a great experience. We went for my son's birthday, and they treated him to a special dessert and gave him a menu signed with birthday wishes from all the staff! That's an extraordinary dinner! Thank you, Onward!
Excellent food and service. Nicest place in Rogers Park.
Exceeded expectations of on all accounts. The drinks are art, the food and desserts unexpected and executed beautifully. I have been for brunch several times but dinner blew me away even more! Love this place. Just what the neighborhood needs.
