Pausa, a bar and cookery in San Mateo, calls for guests to take a recess from life and enjoy a dining experience that transports them to a place of leisure. With a strong focus on modern Italian, our menu will consist of house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza, wood-fired grill, and house-cured meats. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will ensure your pause is a memorable one.

We are now taking reservations for our patio tables, bar, and indoor tables. As we practice social distancing with our new limited floor plan, we ask that you and your guests limit your dining to 2 hours to accommodate all reservations.

When checking table availability, if outdoor seating is not an option to select, then your reservation will be for an indoor table as the outdoor may be booked.

Good food but not curated. The wild board dish was extremely tough. Taste very nice. I know wild meat is tougher then regular but this seem undercooked. The porchetta was not really porchetta. Great service made up for the too noisy environment. Overall a4 star experience

Great service, Subpar food quality. I’m immensely disappointed. Food was served like warm, lack of flavor, just mediocore taste but with a premium price. We will not return anymore.

My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner with a delicious butcher board, margarita pizza, and Porcini Agnoloti. Great cocktails and panna cotta for dessert. We received complimentary dessert wine for our anniversary. Highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion.

Loved our waiter Tony! Outstanding service and professionalism. The hostess was very welcoming. The “manager”, male, that was hovering over the hostess when we checked-in was rude to us and the hostess. He single-handed ruined the vibe and our evening.

First thing to note is that the staff at Pausa made the evening! The service was over the top friendly and efficient. The home made mortadella was delicious as was the salami. The parmesan was great but the ribiola was enough for one - and we were four. At $40 a plate we were expecting more, but little additives like lard, honey, and delicious bread made it doable. The chickory salad looked beautiful but the dressing fell flat. The raw prawn was delightful, but the vitello tonnato wasn't even close to what a tonnato sauce should be. No tuna taste, no anchovy taste, no lemon taste, evoo - but just a bland mayonaise. Pizza (mushroom) was dry. Trout delicious. Pausa has a tempting menu and should do well with a little bit of consistency towards the Italian palate. The bar is amazing! All in all I would try it again because the menu is innovative and that gets a lot of credit.

Just a fair overall experience. If the restaurant takes 8 o'clock reservation and you are to be seated by 8:30PM , we should not feel un-welcome with loud music noise (rave music) by 10 PM when we did not even finish our entrees. Feel the rush to close the restaurant is not a great experience nor a welcome one. Cocktails drinks were good and the charcuterie board was good, the entrees were not so tasty. The risotto was blend and the chanterelles bucatinis did not have enough chanterelles to make it an OK dish. Maybe this restaurant is just a bar for drinks and show not really for quality food entrees. Price should value quality entrees if not just reduce your pricing since you did not provide enough taste and/or material. Disappointing...

Cocktails and dining at the bar was a great experience. Service was excellent and drinks well made. Burrata was small portion although tasty. Pizza and pasta were all good.

We’ve eaten at Pausa many times. I think this time was the least impressive. Service started out great and as the restaurant got busier attention to detail diminished. The charcuterie was awesome as always. I think this has always been the best course on the menu. My entree was extremely salty. I ordered the saffron risotto with lamb belly. I took about two bites of my risotto and I couldn’t eat another bite. I had my boyfriend try it and he agreed. I sent it back and got the steak. When they brought the steak I had finished it before our server decided to ask of this entree was better. We ordered dessert which was nice. We then waited for the bill for about 20-30 minutes as we couldn’t find our server. The manager finally took our bill. I spent over $300 for the meal including tip. I felt that for a restaurant like this the manager would at least apologize for the salty food or even comp a dessert. None of that happened. I’m going to give Pausa a pass on this experience. We’ve been there are least 7 other times and those experiences have been great. The world is short staffed and I think Pausa is one of the better restaurants for its price range on the Peninsula. We will be back!

Our server Mattia was OUTSTANDING, he really took our experience above & beyond what was expected. His passion and knowledge for the food & wine served at Pausa is evident, just wonderful. Food was delicious, one or two dishes were "fine" but not exceptional. I appreciated their creativity in ingredients & sources (local, nice!). The indoor space is pleasing, nice and open. Outdoor parklet looked comfortable. The noise level inside started to build, became a bit loud by the time we left. For a small table top this was fine but even I found myself limiting conversation to those directly next to me. For longer tabes & larger parties, it wouldn't be enjoyable.

Service was so slow here and our waiter was not service minded. The noise level was really loud. We were a big group and shared some appetizers, pizzas and pastas. The food was okay. It's a special occasion restaurant. I would not recommend it.

Great food and great service. From all the times that I have been there, this was the best menu and the most flavorful dishes for sure. The burrata was amazing, the bone marrow really good, the pork belly was my least favorite, and the tomato salad was great as well.

Really loud so more of a group dinner vibe. The waiter was slammed with tables and took a while to come to us to order and to close our check. They need more waiters. But he was very friendly! Food was incredible!!

Pluses: service was good (not great) and the barrel-aged old-fashion cocktail ($17) was superb. The homemade focaccia ($4) was light, airy, and plentiful. Minuses: The Bee Pollen Spaghettoni ($32) was very light on the sausage — almost non-existent — so it was just a plate of pasta in a red sauce. The portion was about 1/2 the size of what a restaurant of this type normally provides — especially for that price. I was underwhelmed. Also, we were celebrating a 65th birthday and a 42nd wedding anniversary, so asked for a special table. We were seated in the center of the dining room and offered a round of Prosecco after our dinner. It seems to me there should have been more acknowledgment. Summary: we had a nice time and a nice dinner, but I wouldn’t go back or recommend it.

Food and ambiance were great. We came here for a special occasion and requested a high chair in our reservation but one wasn’t available until half way through our service, and I had to remind the server. There was also a lot of sediment served in my wine. I was told that’s the way it is, but I know better being wine certified. You don’t serve wine with that much sediment. It was a lot. I was eventually offered a new glass, which was a nice gesture.

This is a first…I made this reservation for my wife and niece. They got home very disappointed with their meal. Everyone has bad days! I am still a huge Pausa fan & will continue to patronize the business.

The ambiance was really nice especially for date night! We had a great experience with our server, Stanley, who walked us through the whole menu and how it works. The food was awesome, most especially the fichi pizza and the charcuterie selections!

Based on the reviews I had high expectations but Pausa did not measure up to them. Ordered the striped bass crudo per other reviews but did not like it. The Burrata portion was very small for a $20 appetizer. I would give it a 3.5 overall but rounded up.
