Pausa Bar & Cookery
Food was delicious and the service was great! They checked on us but never made us feel like we needed to leave!
The cheese plate and salad were really good but the pasta was not seasoned properly and just not put together
Amazing service by our funny and educated waiter. The food was awesome and so was the amazing wine list! Had a Lambrusco on a nice warm day. Hit the spot.
Very Enjoyable experience!!
Some of the best pizza on the Peninsula. Also, great ambiance, outdoor seats and bar area.
I love Pausa. The food and experience are always great. We sat at the bar mostly for the Spritz hour, but also ordered items from the regular menu. The bartenders are awesome.
Service was slow--almost two hours for one course (salad) and coffee --
Great food, service and vibe.
Food is amazing!! Service amazing and ambiance fantastic. They have an exceptional wine list along with wonderful signature cocktails. We have been to many Michelin Star restaurants around the world and Pausa is absolutely comparable . Really wonderful dining experience for lunch and dinner or just for drinks. Would be great if they offered a tasting menu with a pairing to go with it. I have no doubt that the chef would prepare a fabulous tasting! (HINT!HINT! :) What we've had: the wine a charcuterie boards: outstanding quality meats and cheeses along with oh so good house made mustard and berry spread. The pizza is also amazing. I had lunch the other day and ordered the salad with roasted hazel nuts and strawberries with a side of the waghu beef. OMG! Delicious. We also love that the wait staff always has suggestions (i.e., they know the menu well!). Will we return? OF COURSE!! And with friends next time.
Always a pleasure! and especially today for my Birthday :D thank you so much Pausa for making this night unforgettable! delicious food, amazing staff and great drinks!! see you soon!
There are many Italian restaurants in the Bay Area, but the food at this one makes me think I'm in Italy. We had duck pate and two pasta dishes, and all were outstanding. I look forward to coming back.
Great creative food. Did not give 5 stars because one dish I ordered was a bit too salty, but
I will definitely go back.
We went to Pausa to celebrate our engagement when my brother, his wife, best friend and her husband were in town. They went out of their way to print special menus that congratulated our engagement and they brought us special after drinks to cheers. As usual the service was amazing and very personalized and attentive! Our favorite place.
I brought important clients to Pausa and the lunch went very well. Our server was engaging and made the meal and location feel special.
Great service and exquisite food! Our server was totally knowledgable about food, drink, allergy requests, etc. Explained all the options. We had a great time!
FOOD WAS YUMMY! Restaurant just a bit noisy, but also a fun place.
We were warmly greeted and treated to a brief history of how the owner of the former occupant from two years ago is related to the owner of the new restaurant. We were fortunate to be seated by a well-placed noise baffling curtain, which made conversation easier in the acoustically over-lively room. Our waiter treated us to the same introduction: the former occupant of this location is related to the current occupant blah blah... The menu is limited but we both found enough appealing choices to have a hard time making up our minds, and we were both happy with the pastas we got - stinging nettle mezza-rigatoni with sausage ragu and what the menu described as lemon linguine but might be better described as "pasta puttanesca with lemon." I would have preferred if the shared salad (delicious butter lettuce with strawberries and hazelnuts) had been divided by the kitchen; it's a small kindness to diners to not make them wield utensils in a tight, awkward space. We ordered bomboloni (custard-filled donut holes) for dessert. Disappointingly, they were tough and I would not order them again. The food is generally very good. The ambiance is good (though loud). The service tries so hard! And there is room for improvement.
Denise the hostess was phenomenal. Friendly, gracious and kind. I had entered in the comments section of the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday. Many places ignore the comment. Denise not only acknowledged it, she gave us menus that said Happy birthday plus she checked in on us during dinner!
Food was excellent all around. We had the Prosciutto with pork lard spread and pickled veggies, the butter lettuce with strawberries, hazelnuts, onions and ricotta salada, a mixed green salad, Stinging Nettle rigatoni and Romano beans. Everything was delicious. At the end our server brought a birthday Panna Cotta. It was so good the plate was just about licked clean!
Food and environment were great! However, our server could be better in familiarizing herself with the menu and being more attentive.
However I would caution that it you are going to Pausa for a deep conversation that might be a problem due to the noise level.
Good food and service just a bit over priced. Had a good time.
Wonderful staff, great meal. Great place to have a dinner meeting.
We had been to Pausa several times and always had an excellent meal. However, this last meal our main courses lacked the complexity and pizzaz we had previously experienced and the flavors we rather pedestrian. Perhaps it was just an off night or different chef.
Excellent service. Inquired how the porterhouse lamb chop was prepared and server immediately responded with “prepped via Sous Vide and finished over the grill”. None of this “let me go ask and I’ll get back to you stuff. Answered all my questions without hesitation. Made frequent stops to check on the table without being intrusive. Service, quality and value will bring me back again and again!
Really tasty and authentic food, many options to choose from. Delicious cocktails and vino!
The food was amazing, but the wait staff hovers too much and, even though the restaurant was not full--there appeared to be several open tables, they kept clearing things away and interrupting conversation in a very intrusive way. They need to be trained to be attentive without being intrusive. They were kind and polite, but a little to worried about themselves and not worried enough about their dinner guests.
My friends took me there about a year ago. I took my parents therr for my Dad’s Birthday and they loved it. Was especially impressed that they gave us menus with Happy Birthday on it and surprised him with a panna cotta with a kit candle.
The look and atmosphere were great. Nice bar with friendly staff. The bartender was very attentive and helpful with suggestion. While the food was nice I wouldn't go back for it. There are a number of restaurants in San Mateo so competition offers alternatives.
We were celebrating a birthday and the food/staff/experience were all amazing!
The service was slow, the food is too complicated with too many sauces and ingredients.
We weren't all that happy with our first dinner here a few months ago but we've been twice since then for excellent lunch and dinner meals. Although I'd prefer a few less esoteric items on the menu and a few more plant-based/fish-free items, the offerings they have are delicious and well prepared, with portions fairly generous--salad more than ample for two. Extensive wine list, with a helpful map of regions of Italy and sommelier.
Our first experience hinged on a server pushing extra courses and being cold when we declined; these two recent experiences were completely different, with one of the best (warm, kind, not pushy) servers at lunch and a competent and professional server at dinner. I would now rate it 5 star. Well done!
First time eating at Pausa. As a majority of the reviews indicated it was a good meal. My friend and I had a late lunch on a Friday afternoon. We shared a chef selected cheese and salami board. While I am not a fan of duck pate, my friend enjoy it. It also came with a dark colored salami. Our server said it had black squid ink. We were both skeptical but it was pretty good. The accompanying cheese, bread and crackers rounded out a pleasant board. We shared a pizza. It was tasty as well. I would go here again
This Italian restaurant has great food. Most of the food is made on the premises. They make their own salami and there cheeses are local. They are not a cheap restaurant, but if you want superior food, this is the place. A less expensive dinner can be had of a great salad and pizza. Their service is very attentive and friendly. Ourwaitress was very well trained and really knew the menu.
Delectable! Duck pate with lard biscuits was crazy good. The lemon linguini with tuna sausage was perhaps the very best pasta I’ve ever had.
Pausa was a complete surprise.....we selected it, not knowing anything, other than it was very popular ! Other than the hostesses, the wait staff could not have been more friendly, fun, and knowledgeable . We had an absolutely delicious dinner, (great menu), and a fabulous time. We will be back, for sure !
From the moment we entered the restaurant the stage was set. Hospitality was clearly the goal. And they achieved it throughout the evening. Kayla, our server explained the menu and recommended the salumi and cheese board. Steve Ugur the GM demonstrated his knowledge of the wine list and recommended the wine I had already selected.
The food, the wine, the service was old school perfection with an updated casualness that was exactly correct.
This was our third time at Pausa and we continually go back because it’s good... but every time we leave a little let down. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, nothing tastes bad, but nothing wows us and our bill always seems higher than it should.
We also always feel rushed by servers and bussers. I mean the name of the restaurant asks you to pause but we are asked if we’re ready to order about 5 times before we’re actually ready and the bussers clear plates like the second we finish a bite. Pretty annoying.
Incredibly creative Italian dishes. Good bar, great service and outstanding experience. Will definitely return!
Parents in town
Pizza and pasta both delicious...wine prices are really high by the glass but good selection. May have to try their happy hour!
