This was not good food - sorry. Our group of six drove up from Cape May where we were staying to eat at what we thought would be a decent Italian restaurant. I have never gone wrong eating Italian in NJ and the Open Table reviews looked fine. But no. Things overheard at our table last night: “there is no taste of Marsala whatsoever in this veal Marsala dish. It tastes like it was cooked in canned brown gravy.” And also, “this veal Parmesan is tough and flavorless.” And, “this Napoleon tastes like 2 day old apple pie.” And, in terms of the cannoli, “this tastes like sugar frosting. I can’t eat it.”
Everything was cold — food and coffee alike. And there was no sugar whatsoever available in the restaurant for the coffee, even on request. Lest you think we are a bunch of complainers, we had a very good time despite the food. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. The branzino, octopus appetizer and pasta primavera drew positive comments from our group.
I’m sorry - I feel terrible with the pressures of COVID leaving a bad review, but we drove a long way and the meal was not inexpensive. Want to save others the trouble - this was a terrible representation of Italian cooking.
Stuffed artichokes were excellent, as was the lemoncello cake. Entree specials, flounder and veal medallions which actually weren’t medallions, were average at best and way over priced at over $40 each and no sides included with them. Brussels were our chosen side, but not worth $14. Service was bad throughout the evening, which was the worst aspect of the visit and made it unfun. Won’t be back.
Dined outside. Charming dinnerware great selection of courses. Great bread which I think is always a sign of good restaurants. Will go back. Homemade pasta one of the or the best I’ve ever had Would go back again
Lovely place. Great food. Nice wait staff
Always an excellent meal. The salad specials are some of the best I've had.
Top notch Italian restaurant. A must when staying in town!
Polpo has always been one of our favorite restaurants. However, the experience last night was terrible. The food was undercooked, the special misrepresented and the experience left us feeling unfulfilled.
Good food with nice outdoor porch.
We ate inside and the tables were really stacked up so the ambiance was not so great for a couples night out. The sidewalk dining was lively and probably a better way to go. Staff was attentive.
It was a beautiful evening so we had our choice of sitting inside or outside. Menu was extensive. Each of us had a different entree and everyone was outstanding. Service was excellent.
Food was excellent! Specials are always great!
Good experience BYOB
This is a great restaurant with lovely ambience and a BYOB. A little pricey but the food is almost always on point. However, my favorite entree, the capellini positano has gone way up in price and way skimpy on the crabmeat. i know restaurants have taken a hit, that some foods have gotten very costly but $42 for capellini with little scraps of crab is too much. When i got it in the past it had a LOT of lump crab on it. My tomato salad was excellent and my husband's chicken francese was excellent but should have come with a side of pasta which we had to pay for. It seems a little pricey for what you get but i can't say the food isn't almost always excellent.
Very loud. Food was good.
Another overhyped Avalon/Stone harbor restaurant. We had a reservation and they made us stand in the cold rain for 15 minutes outside. Hostess station was completely disheveled and were treating certain people better than others according to how well they knew the owners. Bread was brought to the table ice cold and that’s always a bad start. Wine glasses had sea isle city logos on them. Only one bread plate on the table upon sitting for two guests. Calamari was bland & came out with feta cheese on it 😂. Mussels in red sauce were very bland as well. The special osso bucco was described as being paired with a risotto but we got a hard dry yellow rice overloaded with saffron. The veal dish looked like it had been regurgitated then nuked in the microwave and they forgot my side of broccoli rabe! The grappa they gave us tasted like moonshine mixed with tang powder. Never going back and would not recommend to anyone! Maybe these super rich people have no idea what good food really is. Every server besides Valerie and one young busboy kept masks on their chin and looked a mess. It’s an Albanian run Italian restaurant. Don’t go!!
Great food. Great service.
Dinner was great but it was a little dark in there. Thank god we were eating near the windows. We wondered how some people could see their food. Food was delicious like always and our waitress valarie was very personable and accommodating.
The food and service here is always really good.
Have always loved this restaurant & couldn’t wait to be back this holiday weekend. Looked online & saw they still had my favorite dish...”angel hair w/ crab on top”. Price on website $29
Got to the restaurant, menu price was the same ~ ordered my meal & was told the price is now $44 😳 WHAT?????
Explanation was “crab price is higher”
This dish that I’ve had many times comes w/ about 6 pieces of crab on top of the pasta.
With the price so high I asked if they could put some sautéed spinach on top instead.
I got 4 leaves if spinach on top of the pasta....4!
Asked for the manager 3 x....never showed up.
Very disappointing & understand prices have gone up but this was price gouging at its best.
I will find other restaurants on the island.
Food was good. Portions were small
Polpo once again did not disappoint! Lots of specials and a patient waiter with us. Love this place!
Terrific meal and great service. Favorite place in Avalon!
Food was just ok-we got there at 5 pm with our baby and didn’t eat until 6:45- the service seemed very slow even though everyone was very friendly. Overrated in my opinion.
First visit to this restaurant. I made the reservation two days before and when we arrived on time to our reservation, the hostess seemed overwhelmed with people wanting to enter without reservations, but not acknowledging anyone with a reservation. We finally were seated, five of us, and the table was in the far back and in a crowded area. My daughter had to sit with the seam of the two tables put together and it was a little chaotic- other than all of that, the food was delicious. I will try this restaurant again, just hope all of the ‘before season’ chaos will get ironed out.
Food and atmosphere was great. Music selection not dining music and too loud.
Great experience...wonderful food.
Delicious food, but the service was quite terrible. Inattentive waiter and cranky hostess make our return questionable.
Great food, and atmosphere, eat indoors or out.
Dont bother reading the menu wait for the daily specials
the salad options were tough to choose from and the 3 main dishes
were also as difficult to pick
Mother’s Day in the afternoon and we had a great meal with great service. Will definitely be back!
We've been to Polpo many times. The food and outdoor patio and service make it an attractive place to dine. Please be sure to ask the prices of any of the specials-which are wonderful-so you don't get sticker shock when your bills arrives. On a recent evening we made a reservation to dine outside. There are two hostesses. The people checking in before us did not have a reservation and were asked by Hostess A if they wanted to be in or out. They chose in and were taken inside. Hostess B checked us in. Since it was windy and in the high 50s, I asked if we could sit inside. The answer was no. After we were seated on the patio for about 15 minutes, a party of 4 was also seated outside. They asked their waiter to go inside because of the temperature and wind. Hostess B came over and took them inside. I don't get it. Perhaps Hostess B didn't want to waste a table for 4 inside on the two oldest peope dining on the patio!
Great food, perfect setup outside and great service. We have a new favorite down the shore and will be back!
Service was excellent and the food was outstanding. This was our first time in and we will definitely be making it a regular spot.
Food was delicious and the outdoor seating was quite nice.
Everything is great here. Burrata app was maybe the best I have ever had, Seafood and Pasta specials were delicious. Plus its a BYO so you can enjoy a good bottle of wine with no corking fee. We will be back.
We had a fantastic experience at Polpo. Everything from the wait staff, atmosphere and food to the decor and table setting detail was wonderful. Looking very forward to returning throughout the summer!
We had a great dinner at Polpo in early May. The food was exceptionally good. The service was good, nothing extra special, but that's ok. The restaurant is loud - I felt it needed some voice absorption. But the food was great, the BYOB aspect is nice and we left happy!
Thoroughly enjoyed our first dining experience there, received great service from Sam enjoyed a beautiful evening outside and tried some of their specials which included a delicious salad with prosciutto, melon, strawberries, oranges very tasty indeed. Also had the calamari app which was good then the crab stuffed ravioli with shrimp delicious not too mention the outstanding bread! My husband had the Risotto Pescatore and enjoyed it but maybe was a bit jealous he didn’t order the special! We will gladly return!
Food was very good. Service was okay. Casual, friendly Jersey shore service.
Nice bistro kinda feel. Definitely a busy place. Reservations a must
The dinner was outstanding. it was busy so our waiter was alittle in the weeds. i think he forgot to read us the specials too.
but overall, this was my 3rd time there and it was great!!!
