Well prepared meals, nice wine list, good service. A great place to enjoy an evening out.
Great food. Chef’s recommendations were excellent.
I was in Portland for the weekend and Roma was recommended to me for a nice Italian dinner. The food did not disappoint. We had the meatball appetizer, chicken parmesan, and the steak - all were delicious! Our server was very nice and pleasant, the only complaint was that we felt very rushed. We were told we had to put in our entire order at once, so our meals came out immediately following the appetizer. It did not leave any time to sit, talk, drink, and enjoy. We had an 8:00 reservation and were out by 8:30. The food was great and I would try again, but the rushing of the service needs to be improved so that the experience can be more enjoyable. This is a nice restaurant, and the entire experience should reflect that.
The food, wait staff, hostess, and atmosphere were fabulous. I highly recommend the restaurant.
Great food and service. Carbonara noodles were a little under cooked (crunchier than al dente) but overall the preparation was very good. Service was fantastic. Pricing for the pasta was high, even for Portland.
It was very nice, quite, great service and perfect portion sizes.
We were very disappointed with our experience. Our server was very out of touch with timing and a bit rude. We sat down and she asked if she could take our drink order (literally as we sat down). We asked for a moment and she just stood there. Had to ask her to come back. She came back in about 60 seconds. Had to send her away again. I’m all for attentive service but this felt highly pressured. When she took our drink order she asked if we wanted to place our food order. Again, we asked for more time. This place was not busy and by our estimation they weren’t getting any busier since we had a 7pm reservation. When she came back quickly again we said we’d order appetizers. She wouldn’t take our order unless we ordered our dinner too. This is how the entire meal went.
As for the food, the Caesar salad was really good. The rest of the meal not so much. All but one entree was cold. I Had the carbonara, it was cold and lacked any sort of flavor. It was a tiny portion as well. Neither my wife or our guests enjoyed their entrees. Again, cold and major lack of flavor.
Desserts were marginal at best. It was our first time there and I see little hope for improvement so we won’t be coming. Major improvements needed all around. About a half hour after we left my stomach felt extremely unsettled from the meal.
Recently visited Roma for dinner with a party of 5. We ordered 4 distinct meals. The cod was excellent, cooked with a wonderful char and served with couscous and fresh vegetables. The chicken parm was well executed. On the other hand, the carbonara was a mixed bag. Pasta was fresh, prepared al dente, but not very flavorful and arrived in a very small portion. Additionally, the carbonara was advertised to be topped with a duck egg, but what arrived was remarkably chicken-like. Finally, the squid ink tagliatelle with clams was most disappointing. The pasta was dry, with the only flavor coming from the lemon being used to mask the lack of freshness of the clams. It arrived with a parsley garnish, which was by far the other overwhelming flavor, and did not complement the delicate seafood flavors. The restaurant is in a beautiful building, the service was very nice, so it was disappointing that the food was so mediocre. I would not recommend, especially given the broad range of choices in Portland.
We had an awesome experience at Roma. Our server was attentive and friendly, and every dish was delicious (between 5 of us and 2 courses, we sampled almost the whole menu). We had a great bottle of wine and some lovely cocktails made by the bartender as well. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, yet refined. Roma is not the most talked-about restaurant in Portland, but it’s certainly on par with the other great culinary destinations in the city- a hidden gem.
Great chicken parm and a solid wine list.
Excellent food and service
Great tasting food but portions very small for the price you pay. Very limited parking.. The goat cheese cronuts were very delicious. Service was excellent from Emily.
Our food was very good. My cod was pan fried and was a little oily, but otherwise very good. Others in my party enjoyed their food too, but found the portions a little small, and the food was on the cool side when delivered. Staff was attentive, kind, and personable. Overall a very good experience, but a little room for improvement.
My wife's chicken was not totally cooked.
My Carbonara was a tiny portion and lacking the green peas for the $24.00 price they charged.
The people were pleasant, but the value for your dollar was very disappointing.
Fantastic food and service was great. Highly recommend!!
Wonderful setting in a neighborhood of Portland and great chance to meet other diners in the intimate dining rooms! Great food and wine selection!
Great atmosphere and outstanding service. The best chicken parm I’ve ever had. Bar none! Limited, but high quality menu. Go, you won’t be sorry!
Great experience for me and my wife on our 30th Wedding Anniversary!
Chicken Parmigiano was excellent. The Pork Ragu was greasy and not much flavor. I don't recommend. Table bread is $2 extra...for an Italian restaurant I found that ridiculous.
The atmosphere was great. The service - mediocre.
What a pleasant surprise. Unassuming entrance led to an old world house with well spaced tables, excellent service and outstanding food. Easy on street parking in W. Portland too.
Can't wait to go back, amazing meal, wonderful staff and an overall great evening.
Excellent experience. Great Atmosphere and Vibes. We ordered the asparagus Salad (which comes with a whole soft “boiled” fried egg which was absolutely phenomenal) Stracciatella with Foccacia, Pork Ragu, Half Chicken and a bottle of Tenuta Sassoregale Sangiovese (which was suggested and it paired nicely). The 3 staff members on the floor work well off each other, each of them visit all the tables asking if they need anything or if they could pre bus. Great Job Roma, we will be back!
Half chicken was not cooked fully. Otherwise pork ragu and chicken park were delicious. Matt our server was friendly and helpful. Quaint restaurant tucked into the neighborhood off the beaten path.
The food, service, waiter recommendations, and overall atmosphere were outstanding. We started with the focaccia with strawberry, basil and whipped cheese appetizer. I had the seared cod, which was cooked perfectly, two others had the chicken parmesan, and the fourth person had the pork ragu. We all shared the almond cake for dessert.
Loved all 3 meals at our table! Great service and beautiful room. Can't wait to go back.
Food and service were tremendous. Give this a try - you won't be disappointed!
Very limited menu. Use of a handful of ingredients that were present in every selection. Food was just OK, glad this restaurant has re-opened and hope it stays that way. I imagine as business grows there will be more to choose from on the menu.
We ordered a meatball appetizer and were offended by the inferior quality meat being used. Grizzle had to be removed from each bite and this caused embarrassment as well as an annoyance. The meatballs were dry and not appealing.
Our main course was okay, but just that. The half chicken meal was swimming in some sort of red liquid which made the entire dish soggy and not at all tasty. The chicken parm was unappealing.
The best part of the meal was the dessert, the almond cake. It had a tasty crunch on the outside and a creamy almond taste inside. The prices were extremely high (even in the post-pandemic days when most restaurant owners appear to want to make up for lost revenue in one month). We do understand the hardship that this industry has faced and want to support them. However, the low quality of the ingredients cannot be justified with such high prices. If the food quality was, at least, average, we would have been less displeased. Needless to say, we will not be returning but are happy to look for other establishments to support in this post-pandemic culinary world.
The food was spectacular and the service was excellent. It was my first visit but I’ll definitely be back!
Great food and great customer service. Had the meatballs with chicken parm, was the best I’ve had. Will be returning to try other entrees!
Fabulous! Will go back as soon as possible. The food was delicious, the salad greens incredibly fresh, all combinations great!
Roma consistently excellent since my first visit mid-1950 when Dominick Moreo proprietor
This restaurant has been around for a very long time, but seems to have had its ups and downs. In its early days, it was very formal. On a Saturday night when we couldn't get any other reservation in this foodie town, we decided to take a chance on the Roma Cafe. Wow, were we surprised. The food was fantastic - well beyond our expectations. Apparently there is a new chef and we were impressed. I had the clams in squid ink pasta, my partner had a putanesca pasta, and we shared a chicken liver appetizer. We also shared the cronut with goat cheese for dessert. Loved every mouthful. Service was attentive and casual. We'll be back.
Portion size was extremely small. $30 pork ragu pasta was about 8 oz and nothing came with it. Bread was extra. Brussels sprout appetizer was $10.00 and had 6 Brussels sprouts cut in half. Food quality was good but not memorable and totally overpriced. Would not go back.
We had the fried Brussels sprouts and meatballs as appetizers. The Brussels sprouts were under cooked and hard, the sauce on the meatballs was old. Our entrees were chitarra carbonara, which was watery and not a true carbonara at all. The pasta in this dish was bland as if they forgot to salt the water. The second entry was the squid ink tagliatellini pasta with clams. It came with a whopping four (4) clams for $26 and the pasta was salty. They must have used the salt that was missing from the carbonara in the squid ink pasta. It was a slow night with only three tables occupied when we entered the restaurant so it should not have been difficult to get these meals right. The waiter was kind and attentive, but we will not be back and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
We had meatballs, English pea crespelle and chicken parm. The parm tasted good, the chicken was a good size on top of a small portion of pasta.
The crespelle tasted awful to me and had a terrible texture, my partner did enjoy it though. Meatballs were good not amazing.
Super nice waitstaff and delicious food in a very comfortable beautifully converted old house.
Comfortable, quiet and a beautiful place !!
