Ron of Japan Steakhouse - Northbrook
The service was wonderful as the waitress was constantly filling our water and Coke. Our chef cooked our dinners to perfection but he couldn’t understand some of the questions others were asking him. Too many people seated at our table made it a tight squeeze while eating dinner.
My steak was unseasoned with no flavor. No seasoning on the vegetables as well. I have had a much better meal for a lot less at other places. I was looking for something new and this was no it. The service was good. The staff was great and polite. Will no be back.
Employees at the front of the house were rude the night we went. The waitress and cook were very nice (but she got one of our orders wrong).
The food itself was not good, but the experience was fun.
Always a fun place for a group and an annual birthday visit for kids. Show is always good and fresh good food and fast paced. We did get the food fairly quickly as the restaurant was not too crowded on a week night. The biggest draw back is the apparent lack of any working ventilation. The haze of smoke and oil in the air was constant and you could see that the fans over the grills were doing nothing as the smoke drifted past the fans and was going to the light fixtures and hanging in the corners. You can't wear anything nice because you smell of smoke and oil. They really need to upgrade the fans and maybe change the filters.
The food was over priced and not good, the chef was very unfriendly .
We always love coming to ROJ. Service is amazing and food is delicious!
The lost our reservation, than they shoved us at a table with 4 others so there was very little room to move let a line eat. Took forever to get our food our group didn’t eat at the same time. I ordered the filet and crab, the crab was disgusting! It was watery and was not fresh at all! We got the 7 course meal and couldn’t get any part of the meal together as a group. Asked for butter 3 times it never came, asked for the ice cream we ordered 3 time it finally came when everyone else was done! We will not be back!
Our server took over 20 minutes to get my husband his coke and 2 other people had to wait for him to bring iced tea.
Our chef even had to refill our water (which was empty)because our waiter was nowhere to be found. We’ve gone to Ron’s for almost 30 years about twice a month . This was the first time , on a weekday, that we’ve had such bad service. The chef did a great job with the food!!
Food was average, the chef did not put on the traditional hibachi “show” and our bill for 4 people was $300!! Very disappointed
Food is amazing, love everything about this place!!
Disappointing & expensive experience. We went at 4 pm on New Years Eve. Met by the Maitre D' who was cheerful, attentive & efficient. We were seated quickly & the overall service experience was fine throughout the evening. First table to be seated w/ 2 other couples. The reason for my 3 star rating is focused on the cooking conditions & the food appearance, food quality and food value.
The exhaust fan over our grill and table was not functioning correctly, minimal draw for exhaust. Consequently, the cook was constantly battling smoke in his face & smoke also wafted occasionally into the faces of all of us around the table. I'm not sure how the cook would be able to cook for 5 couples / 10 people if the table were full, as he had to cook in phases on the small grill to accommodate the 6 of us. It was a segmented delivery of food and did not meet my expectations. The cooking surface has to be cleared / scraped multiple times during the cooking process - and that is fine. BUT, what was annoying & nauseating was the grease trap backing up onto the grill because it had not been emptied from the prior night. Combine that visual w/ smoking oil in my face & I was not feeling well half way thru the meal.
The food portions were small & not appealing to the eye. The value would not be realized with regular menu prices, but I believe prices were set at a higher schedule for New Years Eve, thus the value was diminished further. My overall grade of 3 stars is generous - as I would rather score it as 2.5 stars. We ordered a pork dumpling appetizer (6-count, those were good), two Crown-Combo meals - one chicken (less than 6 oz) & one salmon (about 6 oz) - each came w/ mixed veggies on grill (small portion / mediocre mix of veggies), 1 order of beef fried rice (bland, i suppose it's an acquired taste), soup (okay) & salad (so-so), Green Tea ice cream (2).
The bill was $105 w/o tip. This venue & food choices may appeal to others, for me, this was a first and last visit.
We celebrated our 19th anniversary with you as we have done every year on December 30th, and once again you did amazing all around!! Thank you Sarah Blackwood and team! Lisa was an attentive and friendly server, and our chef was exceptional! Everything was excellent! 新年明けましておめでとうございます‼️🎍😄🙇🏾♂️✌🏾今年もよろしくお願いします！(Have Itaya-San read that)
I have been to at least 20 Japanese Hibachi grills (including living in Japan) and this was by far the worst. It started with trying to fit 2 more people into our party of 7 around a table that barely fit 7 in the first place! With 9 people shoved around this tiny table, the chef's elbow was in my face the whole time.
The poor waiter was obviously very new and did not know what he was doing, he was sweet but so untrained.
The food was mediocre- price was typical for this type of food but overpriced for the quality- the fried rice was just weird with ground beef but the vegetables and meat were OK. Chicken soup? - It should be Miso, and for the price, a small salad it typically included but was not here.
Also weird was the way you don't have a plate in front of you- hard to eat from a distance. And no one ate even close to the same time which is the sign of an inexperienced hibachi chef.
There is no hibachi "show" other than a bit of fire, which is really why many people go to this type of restaurant.
The decor was cute but needed some tending to and updating.
Not recommending nor returning. Hope they can improve.
Smokey, noisy and crowded. Small booths that you are forced to share with strangers. Premium pricing, which you somewhat expect in teppanyaki places in exchange for the entertainment provided by the chef during food preparation. None of that here. Very poor value for the money.
Probably should not go on Christmas Eve. Prices increased, whether for The Holidays or forever, not certain. Seated in an area where cold air was blowing on our backs and the guests across from us had the cooking smoke blowing in their face the entire time. But most disappointing was the shrimp was over cooked and totally burnt on the bottom, had to eat it scrapping off with my teeth the minimal shrimp on a pad of burnt crust.
I almost took a photo of the burnt expensive crown shrimp dinner, but in light of all the previous good dinners for the past 30 years or so, decided not to.
Waiter was nervous, shaky hands, referred to my husband as “buddy” very inappropriate.
Unfortunately a family with two obnoxious children and three inattentive adults sat at our table.
The experience was awful. They sat us 25 minutes after our reservation time and then we sat for 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge we were there. Our chef had absolutely no personality and added nothing to the dining experience. The food was bad and they did not clean up after dining at all. Service overall was appalling. Usually this is one of our favorite dining events and we may never go back!!
Way overpriced and the chef didn’t do any fun tricks with knives or onions.
45 mins waiting for our cocktails then brought wrong drinks TWICE.
Great food but that staff needs better training
Not worth the money. No theatrics with the cooking. Scraping things off people’s plates and running it across the grill, disgusting! $250 for four people, two drinks with tat at $ 10 each. I don’t care for Benihana but I would have rather gone there. Paid extra for every little thing. Nope, never again and wouldn’t recommend it.
The food is consistently excellent.
The service was superb this time around! Yoshi was an excellent cook! The team made it a great birthday experience for the 3 Birthday celebrations! Thanks!
Excellent chef preparing shrimp , filet mignon, scallops,
and calamari to perfection!!! Everyone loved the food
Just wasn’t the same as usual. Egg sauce not as good. Confusion over our orders.
Always excellent! But they need to start cleaning the grill better after the meal so people aren’t looking at a greasy mess
Returning after not having been there in many years, I was so excited. The food was pretty good, but the service was not and the chef just cooks. No showmanship like there used to be. The worst thing was that the hood over the cooktop was on but not pulling up the smoke. It all went directly into my daughter's face the entire time. Server and chef both saw this and how unpleasant it was. I hope they fix that!
Very expensive for quality of food
The staff was so nice and accommodating. My father is legally blind and elderly and all of the staff was extremely patient and helpful with our needs. And their food never disappoints. We live closer to the downtown Chicago location but make the trip out to Northbrook for this very reason.
Filet was delicious and tender... cooked to perfection.
Only complaint was the shrimp my husband had was a little burnt. His calamari and scallops were excellent!
We were rushed through the dinner. Salads were brought before we could even put our spoons in our soups. Steak and lobster were over cooked. Started cleaning up and taking away food while we were still eating. When we were finished, we were given the to-go containers to fill up ourselves (been here many times and they have always boxed up the leftovers in the past) in a frenzy as we tried to fend off the clean up person. Otherwise, food was generally good and had a good time. We were there for a birthday and they did the birthday song. They brought an extra ice cream dessert even though I declined which was nice but not necessary. Prices have been raised.
Eating there for 30 years. Unique, entertaining and most importantly, delicious.
Thanks for another wonderful birthday experience!! We’ll be back soon for Xmas eve!
It was nice overall. They forgot one of the salads for our party and didn’t acknowledge that we had made a reservation and noted there was a birthday. That was disappointing. Every table had a birthday, but they didn’t say anything abt ours
Exotic food prepared artfully right before your eyes! Very courteous and responsive service.
45 minute wait for a table...frustrating.
Kitch and fun, but really showing it’s age. If you are looking for a family fun night and don’t mind a little mediocrity, go here.
Terrible cocktail menu. Food was just standard. Server was nice; however, when a question arose about the bill, the lady manager was absolutely rude and unfriendly to my mother in law and basically accused her of trying to steal. Considering we spent over $500 on dinner, you would think they would be a little more gracious and customer centric. Pretty much ruined our entire experience here.
Bottom line, they need to retrain their staff, reinvest in the restaurant and create a more wow experience. Yes the egg sauce is good, but everything else seemed dated and management seems is obviously solely focused on the cash register.
