Sands By The Sea
Amazing staff, very friendly helphful, very clean tables and well looked after.
Cannot find anything wrong.
AFTERNOON TEA FOR A 40 TH BIRTHDAY WAS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF ICELAND FREEZER SANDWICHES FILLING WAS DISCUSTING AND BREAD DRY WILL NOT RETURN
Food was nice. Service was a bit slow when we first arrived but after a change of staff during visit our new waitress couldn’t do enough for us
Did not even know we were coming, let alone why. We ended up not bothering, as it felt wrong & we knew we were not welcome. NEVER again! Am asked what I would recommend this place for - LEAVING!
Very nice. Quite good service considering how busy it was. Strange choice of sandwiches with the afternoon tea but cakes were good
A lovely selection of food for a vegetarian afternoon tea. Staff were very polite and helpful. The environment was very calm and relaxing. We were made to feel very welcome. Our 2 year old enjoyed himself too with the food and playing with staff. Service was quick and food was fresh.
Although I had vouchers, I had booked this many months prior and was excited to go on the first day of advent.was not festive at all
Windows were dirty, cutlery dirty, cups had dishwasher tablet residue ( same as my previous visit in September) sandwiches were basic and cakes were a Iceland frozen platter- very disappointed- thought perhaps hit chocolate, mince pies turkey sandwiches?
Thought the afternoon tea would be really festive and we would be in the conservatory area but was seated in the front of the building which lacked festive lustre. Staff were great though
Very nice place to eat. Food delicious. Plenty of choice for my gluten free friend. Lovely setting and views on a nice clear day in sunny Southend.
Service was excellent and our waitress was very attentive and we could not fault at all . The place lacked atmosphere and the afternoon tea was average
Nice food and location, but more importantly the staff were excellent. Very friendly and helpful.
Had a nice late lunch here. Shame they no longer serve Peroni.
Great sea front restaurant. Order at the counter. Great food, traditional fish and chips. Can get very noisy with family's but food and location makes up for it.
Staff were lovely just think the vegan option wasn’t that good. Dried up sausage, some sort of pastry filled with a tomato mush, may have been better if it had been warm. 2 out of 4 of the vegan cakes were great
Has changed since I last ate there but food was good and served hot , most had traditional fish & chips and view as always Amazing !!
It allowed me through open table to book a table for my daughters first birthday, for half past 5. I have since seen on their website that it closes at 5pm through the week. No one made us aware of that though and allowed us in to order 1 round of drinks and our meals. It wasn’t until I tried to order pudding that I was then made aware that the tills were closed off as they had closed at half past 5 so we were not allowed to carry on our meal as planned. The food was rubbish for the price as well, I could have got a better quality fish and chips for a lot less at a local chippy! I am extremely disappointed as it was my daughters first birthday and I wanted it to be a special occasion!
After eating here many tines I was really angry after our last experience. Firstly the lady at the counter was very rude and needs customer service training. We was advised a 20 min wait for food and had to chase after 35 mins as we had children at the table again no apology. My fish was off and the manager refused to believe me and did not offer any compensation. Even though another table next to us had the same issue!! Needless to say we will never return!
Restaurant was nearly empty on a Friday evening and seemed clean. Staff were fine but food was not. Chips dried up and scrappy. Husband's plaice was mostly batter with not much fish. Not cheap. Disappointing on my birthday!
The man that greeted and served us was fantastic, the food was great value especially with £10 voucher for afternoon tea! 👍
Took my three grandchildren girls of 10 and a boy aged 3 for afternoon tea on Thursday 8th August 2019. Couldnt fault the food and service however when I went to the counter and told the assistant Christine my grandchildren wanted tea and not juice she told me that tea wasn't included and had to pay a further £1.80 per child. Surely 'afternoon tea' had the word 'tea' so one would have thought that it would actually include tea. This is the first time I have taken my grandchildren for 'afternoon tea' at the sands and didn't want to disappoint them and though we all enjoyed it I wouldn't take my grandchildren there again. Every other place I have taken them included tea without question It should be advertised as 'aftetnoon tea' for adults only and for children 'afternoon' leaving the 'tea' out as it doesn't include it. Christine gave me the juices as it was part of the deal. Surely it was more expensive providing juices than a pot of tea. Surely as parents and grandparents are concerned in sugar in take with children then a cup of tea would have been healither.
Lovely location and even better when the weather is nice as the view is beautiful. Food was lovely and staff very friendly. Had a very relaxing time.
We waited 45 mins for our order, its wasnt busy, had to ask 2 separate waitresses about our order first waitress just walked off and didnt return, sandwiches were crusty at edges, like they had been sitting out, would not return
Food was lovely generally. Only comment I would make is that it would have been nice if the crusts were off the sandwiches! They were absolutely stuffed with fillings though.
Staff were lovely, very attentive and friendly, often asking if everything was ok and offering more tea/coffee. Well done!
This was a gift given to me for my birthday. So I am not sure of the value, but the whole experience was very nice, staff very friendly. I would recommend to people and having a seaside view was also a bonus.
We were disappointed with this restaurant. Had seen some bad reviews but decided to try it anyway. Firstly, on the steps outside there was a crowd of youngsters, some smoking, getting in the way - not a great start. They should have been moved on by the owners. Then we waited about 5 mins for anyone to come and seat us. No staff! Then you have to go and order/pay at the bar and collect your own cutlery etc. Tomato and tartare sauce was in small sachets that could not be opened easily. It was like a canteen. We waited quite a while for our fish and chips and when it finally came the fish was average but the chips were below average. Very pale and just cooked and some looked like they had been reheated. Wine wasn’t great either. The thing we liked most, and reason why I’ve given two stars, was sitting on the white sofas after our meal, soaking up the sun and looking at the sea (estuary). Not good enough! Won’t go back I’m afraid.
Was expecting table service but you had to go to a counter and order which was difficult for 7 people. Not as nice as it used to be. The food was nothing special and you could have gone to any of the fish and chip shops and get the same thing for half the price. Waiting staff were ok
Unfortunately it was a hot day and the sandwiches had curled and dry, the sweets were sweating and the fruit in the turn.
Could have done with a few more sandwiches and sweets. Nice scones.
We really enjoyed our lunch. The food was lovely and good value and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend for a great seaside experience. Thankyou.
We had a very enjoyable lunch at your restaurant. However you were aware of our coming and there was only one member of staff at the counter where we ordered our food and where we got our drinks. I felt very sorry for him as he did a sterling job serving 17 of us plus other diners. The result was that some members of our party had completed their meals before others had even been served. This was in no way the fault of the poor chap behind the counter, if he had help, one to take the orders, one to pour the drinks and one to take the money it would have been a very slick experience.
Food was good value and nice choice . Service was good kept our pots of tea coming and very pleasant would def go back
The food was very nice, particularly the starters of haddock cakes and calamari. The salad with both starter and main was disappointingly basic - some shredded lettuce, a slice of gherkin and a tomato. The sauces came only in sachets ans you had to collect your own cutlery amd napkins which cheapened the feel of the place dramatically. Also, toilet floors were extremely slippery and I hear the females was fairly unclean - the males was of good cleanliness (except for the floor).
However, the food was reasonably priced and the outdoor area was quite pleasant. Inside was still roasting hot as we walked through at 5.45.. must have been unbearable during the peak of the sunny day that it was.
Good location, tasty food, friendly staff but several areas which could be improved.
I found a fly in my salad, when I complained they told me it must just have landed at the table. I told them it wouldn’t by lying on its back with its legs in the air. They replaced my meal and gave me a free drink. The Dinner was very expensive for the quality. I thought being a restaurant it would be nicer than eating at Adventure Island, sadly it wasn’t.
Excellent service and good food. Great atmosphere on a lovely sunny day with doors open.
Poor value for money.
No running tap water in ladies toilet
Won’t be coming back, sands has gone downhill since being taken over. Poor quality food, more like a greasy cafe. Afternoon tea looked as though it was purchased from the pound shop.
Andrew and staff were so friendly and helpful I have allergies so changed a few bits for me
Very arrogant host. He flat out refused us an outdoor table eventhough there was clearly enough tables to seat more than just my party. Waitress was nice and food was good.
I haven't been here in a while so I was super dissappointed on how much the place has changed. The service was awful, totally understand that it was busy but there was not enough staff on.
The food was dreadful and in hindsight I wish I hadnt paid the bill
I was really pleased with the service, food and value. Will definitely come back again
Location was lovely however £30 for afternoon tea for two was a bit much considering you only got one whole sandwich cut into four pieces, two scones & about four bite size cakes. I'd recommend either the restaurant lower the price or provide more for the money. Would visit again but order from the main menu.
