Staff were exceptional. We felt really bad for
Them as the theatres closed that day.
So it was felt quiet.
As always food was delicious.
The sides purchased separately were very expensive increasing the price of the meal significantly and seemed to decrease perceived value.
Loved my meal and the ambiance and the waitress.
So disappointed to find the hamburger dinner omitted from the dinner menu.
I wanted my husband to try it before the theatre as a first time iconic treat.
Once upon a time the Senator was a great place to grab a quick dinner before the theatre - they made a great burger and service was excellent- along comes the sell out broadway musical Hamilton and the management at the Senator saw an opportunity to cash in - with the opening of the musical came a new menu that saw the burger off the menu to be replaced by a chicken pot pie for $32.00 and liver that was as tough as cowhide. I was once a fan but they’ve lost me for keeps
a great place for dinner, whether it's pre theater or not.
I am so glad that I had the foresight to secure a reservation in advance. We loved the experience- and the only issue with the noise level was the diners at the table beside us- one of the guests laughed and spoke so loudly it made conversation difficult. Given the stares from the table directly adjacent to her, I know we were not alone. Although you can't reserve neighbouring guests, I was delighted with the ambience, the food and the service, and look forward to our next attendance.
Very expensive for a diner
While the seating is cramped, the food and service were excellent so it makes up for it. Great meal was had by all!
The new menu is nice but really expensive compared to what was offered before.
Food was good but not outstanding and not worth the price.
Our waiter tried his best but could hardly hear what we were saying to him.... way too noisy.
Also, the lights are so very dim it was hard to read the menu without a flashlight.
Great music made the evening!!xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Loved being at the Senator. A gem in the city. And great, old school staff.
Extremely disappointed as I had high expectations reading the very good reviews. Atmosphere was more like a Soda shop decor from the earlier era. Loud noisy and uncomfortable seating. Wasnt shocked by the absorbent prices as I check the menu before I suggested it for my Birthday dinner. Appetizer of seared scallops was quite good. For $26 for 3 scallops you would expect it to be. I ordered the liver and potato $38 with a request for the liver to be done medium rare. I have ordered it that way in many restaurants before and it was delicious. Mine came to the table well done. I tried to eat it but could not. The waitress apologized and took it back and said will make sure it is done right. Came back again well done. No pink at all. My other guest sent her Gumbo back as well as it arrived cold. Very disappointed and embarrassed as I suggested this restaurant for my Birthday dinner. Sad because I love the fact that it is the oldest restaurant in Toronto and the history behind it. Unfortunately for the price you pay here there are Many more better restaurants in Toronto to choose from. One star out of five.
Great food. We all had the liver dish which is delicious.
Food was very good. I had salmon which was excellent and nicely presented. Banquettes are cramped and awkward for seating.
A reliable restaurant that we go back to often!
Lovely evening with friends
Seating was cool, but a little cramped. Food was good, but a little overpriced for what it was. Too much food for entree.
Nice dinner, but did not feel it was worth what we paid.
Took a long time to get the bill at the end of the meal, otherwise waiter was very attentive.
First rate food and pleasant friendly service. Perfect for great ppretheatre dinner.
I can’t believe I’ve never dined here before! It’s an upscale diner with gourmet food and perfect service. We enjoyed our experience immensely
The food was good and the service friendly and accommodating
Great food. Service was excellent, attentive and accommodating. Very nice experience. Definately coming back.
Food was very good, more than adequate wine list with some interesting "green" choices and the servers were helpful, courteous and friendly. Went back during Hamilton intermission for a glass of wine and it was much quicker than waiting in line at the theatre.
Enjoyed our pre-show dinner with family. My food was good, just wish the roast beef was sliced a little thicker. Wife's scallops were tasty as well as the gnocchi.
The Senator is WONDERFUL. We had great food and we're looked after as if by family. We were visiting people that we hadn't seen for a long time, & the night was a special one....& I had really sung the praises of the Senator. We had a great night, & every hope was exceeded. Thank you!
Great food and service. Best fries in city of Toronto. Roast beef was tender and good
The new menu plus the incredibly pro service was heavenly and added a sprinkle of magic dust to our evening at #Hamilton!
This location would have passed me by if I had not found it on the internet. I loved the style and layout. The service and food were both excellent. The bill was what I would expect to pay in London but saying that I thought it was worth it
This time my buddy and I ordered your chicken pot pie and were very pleasantly surprised - nice fluffy, golden pastry, lots of chicken chunks and really good flavour at a reasonable cost. Well done!
Ordinary food that I could have cooked at home myself.
I had not been to the Senator for a while. I think it survives because it is across from the Ed Mirvish Theatre. It also is a good venue (the upstairs) for music. The food was a major disappointment. I visited with a friend (who has her own restaurant). We ordered Arancini as an appetizer and both of us had prime rib for out mains. The arancini tasted like someone served a packaged riceball with pasta sauce out of a can. Fortunately the waitress was smart enough not to charge us for it. We then had Caesar's salad which was better. The prime rib I think I can make better at home. Uninspiring.
The service was good (even with the waitress having to train someone as she worked). The wine was ok. Dessert was ok. Being a Mirvish subscriber helped with a discount. But next time I will go elsewhere for dinner.
Cool diner / booth space with a cozy feel to go with friends - excellent choice of you are going to the theatre across the street!
Dinner before the theatre. Convenient but over-priced. It’s always been over-priced. They change the menu pretty often, it seems to me, and favourites get dumped. No more crab cakes, what a shame!!!! This has been our go to before the theatre for a couple of years now. But now I wonder why. Not sure we’ll come back any time soon.
My dish of chicken pot pie came like soup. Waitress was very good and took it back. My husband finished eating before I got mine. The second one arrived minimally better. It was tasty but too runny.
Great food and outstanding service
Senators, changed the menu the day before our visit. They are aiming to be a higher-end restaurant, therefore, higher prices. I think that the restaurant is taking advantage of the theatre crowd across the street. The price for the quality of the food was excessive. The service was very good and friendly. This used to be a favourite place for us.
Second tome we have had lack-luster experience.
It was a most pleasant experience. The staff were welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good food, great service, and a cozy ambience.
Our biggest issue was that the wrong meal was ordered for my husband. He got his meal after the rest of the table. There were 4 of us. We got an apology but no compensation. Plus rice pudding was sparse and bland for the price.
I ate at the Senator a few years back and it was fantastic. I had an excellent steak and the best cream brûlée I’ve ever eaten. This time it was just horrible. My special occasion wasn’t recognized, we were put upstairs in a VERY small room which was beyond capacity, the music was so loud it was impossible to enjoy the meal, the food was less than average... NOTHING like what I remembered. After this visit, I will not plan to ever eat here again. As I said the food was marginal and it was VERY expensive for the quality. Sorry.... this place has lost its mojo!!
The good was fine but overpriced. The Senator is an old diner, which is fine but not worth the prices they charge.
Love this restaurant. Had Sir Elton John's favorite Hamburger. It was delish.
The Senator wine bar is a wonderful venue for live music. We heard Julian Fauth with Carlos del Junco, both great musicians. The food and service were good too. We just wish the chairs were more comfortable. The existing cafe chairs are just not designed for sitting for three hours to listen to music!
