Husband loved the Cippinino - lots of seafood & thick broth, 2 large pieces of grilled garlic bread. I had the cedar planked salmon with corn succatash & grilled squash - delish. We split the salad special. It was huge, yummy and the lemon dressing was perfect.
This restaurant leaves a lot to be desired, but what it has is location. If you are at Higgins Beach and don't feel like cooking or driving anywhere, the food is good enough. The cedar plank salmon was a nice surprise this year. A great, casual ambience, staff is seasonal so be patient. Keep expectations in check and you may be pleasantly surprised!!
Shade is very casual and the noise level can be fairly high, making it tough to converse without raising your voice. The mezzo plate appetizer had a nice variety of items, but was delivered with three pita triangles. Clearly a sharing kind of plate and we asked for more pita, or bread. I think we got three more triangles, maybe four. There were two us dining. I ordered a veggie burger - I was surprised to find it had been deep fried. My guest ordered a chicken sandwich, it too was fried. Along with our menus we received a wine list (single sheet of paper) that was described as their "reserve wine list". Our mistake that we did not pay close attention to the prices of these reserved wines. In this highly casual place (my entrée was $12), we ended up buying a half bottle of wine that cost $77!! Never spent that much on wine in a restaurant in my life, and sure as heck didn't expect to do so in a place like this. My glass and a half of wine was good, but certainly not great. Our loss for not paying closer attention and I sure won't be going back. If you go, make sure you scrutinize the alcohol prices.
Overall really good! Hip, casual atmosphere, friendly staff, and perfect location. My burger was amazing and my boyfriend's prime rib special was delicious. Ample portions; I'll have to come back sometime and skip appetizers so I can actually eat dessert!
Pleasant staff. Relaxing atmosphere and great food. Fish tacos were very good.
Nice it is so close to the beach!
My father and I had an excellent dining experience this weekend at Shade, and so appreciative of the hard working staff that went above and beyond to make our night wonderful! We had dinner at the bar, and the bartenders Burt and Sierra were friendly, engaging and quick to serve us, which is impressive as it was really busy. They were very knowledgeable to answer all of our questions and Burt made excellent cocktails to start us off. my dad had a Manhattan and I had a Cucumber Martini (forgot the drink name, but it was delicious). We had Oysters to start, and was pleased to find that they were Mookie Blues, one my fave! Abby, the manager brought them over and took the time to check in and make sure we were being taken care of. We also had a lovely chat with her. Then we split the mussels app, and finished off with the Linguine with clams! All of the food was superb! We loved the quaint beach bar vibe that’s very inviting, with an addition of sophistication and high end service! Thank you to the staff of Shade for your hospitality! We will be back again soon!
Worst dining experience in my entire life. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had, by far. I can’t actually comment on the food. We never received it. We sat at the table for 22 minutes. No service at all. We did order drinks and an appetizer. Never came and we never saw the waitress again. We left and had to walk out. We searched and searched for any staff at all. To no avail. Not sure where they hide at 7 pm during a busy dinner rush. Awful. No napkins. No water. No silverware. And after to talking to many friends they all said the same exact thing about shade. They won’t be back. The service is horrendous.
Great atmosphere, but menu and food disappoints. Go for cocktails and oysters at Happy Hour, and have dinner in Portland.
Got stomach sick after our experience
Limited Drink Menu
Truly enjoyed the venue and the food! Great new location to stop by
I made a reservation through Open Table specifically requesting a standard table on the outside patio away from the kitchen and noisy parties/children as we were there for our anniversary. When we arrived we were told that it would be a 25 minute wait beyond our reservation time, so we went to the bar for a drink. The bar only has one type of each wine, white, red, rose, so if you don't like Chardonnay, you don't get to drink white wine. So, instead of the Pinot Grigio she would have liked my wife asked if she could have a margarita. The drink she received, while authentic to a handmade margarita from a bartender's guide, is not what the average person gets when they request one at a bar, so it didn't suit my wife's tastes. When asked about how we liked the drink, we said it wasn't our favorite and the bartender was noticeably miffed. No interest in making it right or taking it off our bill. The hostess arrived at that point so we paid for the drinks and followed her to our table. Despite telling the restaurant through open table that we wanted a quiet table for our anniversary, we were seated in a hallway along the side of the bar that was crowded and loaded with families with small children. I explained to the hostess what we had requested and that we had asked to sit outside. She was totally put out, sighed and told us that it would take another 15 minutes to pull a table together. So, back to the bar we went. You would think someone would have thought to apologize, buy us a drink, something given the fact that it was a special occasion that was on its way to being ruined. Nope. 20 minutes later, an hour after our original reservation, the hostess came back and seated us outside on the patio at the darkest table in the restaurant right next to the gate that leads outside. At this point we had had enough so we left. This could have simply been a rare, rough night for the restaurant, but the overall lack of hospitality means no return trip for us.
Servers really made our evening a delight!
Brie was extremely welcoming and friendly as was Dominique.
The screened-in dining area was lovely.
Bottle of Prosecco was very good and well priced.
Fish tacos which were recommended was less than stellar; Prime rib was beyond medium rare as requested and
poorly carved; accompanying potato and veg so-so.
Another joint with squandered potential. Not sure how an investor can sleep easy knowing that his restaurant is just barely okay.
By the way, never think that paying $1 for an oyster is a good value. If you want your oyster dry (shucked an hour before it's served), cut to shreds by an amateur shucker, then by all means go for the happy hour "deal". For me, please bring me the fresh $3 oysters, thank you very much!
I have now been there 4 times. Enjoyed them all. I had a fish dish each time. They were all very good! I like the idea of having wine on tap.
My only complaint is that the last two times, we were unable to get seating in the large outside room, which I requested on the reservation. They were, however, able to seat us with no waiting.
Will highly recommend and will be back.
I've eaten here before. I usually expect superbly yummy seafood. It was just average this time. Service was friendly but slow...as has typically been the case..the kitchen never seems to get it quite right in terms of all meals arriving together, so some meals are usually not quite hot when they arrive at the table. The price is good and Sunday nights are relaxed with a very good acoustic guitar player.
Mixed review. We were a party of five. Most dinners were very good...fish tacos, fish & chips and the daily catch. However, my daughter's initially came out extremely undercooked, and then after a return trip to the kitchen, extremely charred! The manager immediately took it off the bill when we brought it to her attention. .
The only disappointment was the very limited wine choices...
Great location, staff attentive and professional. Food was a pleasant surprise, well done in terms of menu , quality and presentation.
Excellent food and atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
We were happy to visit the new Shade Restaurant at the Higgins Beach Inn. The newly updated restaurant and bar were nicely done. Service was attentive, knowledgeable. It was my husband's birthday and we wanted lobster rolls. They were quite good - meaty with a bit of mayonnaise, delicious grilled bun. The house made French fries were very good, and the bean salad was a nice change from the typical coleslaw. We also ordered the smoked fish (shrimp, mussels, scallops) appetizer. All in all, the meal was good in a nice atmosphere. We did think it was a bit pricy, though, for the value.
Food was delicious. We ate on the covered porch and it was very relaxing. Thoughtful service. Picture shows paella. Half salads are very generous sizing.
A restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and friendly service. The dining space has been completely redone since the last summer season.
Food was excellent very tasty. Dessert choices are lacking Server Erin was very pleasant efficient and friendly
Our waitress Lauren was fantastic!
Sarah - the bartender knew her stuff; epespecislly rhe bourbons and single malts. We will be back!
