smyrna is such a gem on cal ave and they have the best lamb chops in palo alto !
Lamb chops and lamb burger were both excellent. Service was good.
A huge shout out to the hostess, who acted as our waitress because the only time the waiter came by was to ask how our food was when we were 3/4 the way through. We sat for 30 minutes before ANYONE acknowledged our presence. To be fair, it was Valentine’s Day, so they were busy. Finally the hostess came over with some wine glasses and offered to open the bottle we brought with us (despite admitting she did not really have any experience opening wine bottles!).
Still getting no attention, the hostess took pity on us and took our order. Had it not been for her initiative and nice demeanor, we probably would have walked out. I certainly hope the wait staff shared their tips with her. They deserved nothing. The food was good, but service was a disaster.
Overall it was an okay place. Not great but not bad either. The service was a bit slow for Valentines Day, as in I had to keep grabbing the waiter and ask for stuff. Food was good but not great as they shortened the menu for Valentine’s Day and this was not visible at the time of reservation.
Good. Fresh food pleasant. Service
Very enjoyable meal
Beautifully presented, colorful, and healthy food options. More upscale (in a good way) than your average Mediterranean place. I hope this little gem catches on as it was pretty quiet when we came in for a work lunch, but it is still early days. Keep up the good work!
Excellent service and great food. Perfect choice for a Xmas dinner!
Excellent food in a comfortable and friendly environment. Not as hectic a feeling as in some other crowded restaurants on California Ave. I could easily hear my wife without being overwhelmed by the background sounds. Is that good or not?:) Service was attentive without being intrusive. Prices were reasonable for the quality and quantity of servings. You might want to start dinner with their Spread Sampler that consists of
Tzatziki (delicious Greek dip), eggplant puree, hummus dip & pita bread. We will be back.
This new restaurant is a hidden gem. The menu offers very creative and delicious takes on Mediterranean classics. We have enjoyed the lamb and feta ravioli, the generously portioned lamb chops, the stuffed sea bass entrees and the octopus and halloumi appetizers. The kunefe is authentic and delicious and the chocolate mousse is wicked. Most of the dishes are sharable. Service is friendly and attentive.
Experience was "ok" but not memorable. Food quality needs to pick up considerably to bring us back. We've had a couple of very good meals in the past, but the experience has been inconsistent. Service is very friendly and good. Acoustics fine. Ambiance nice. Food needs to catch up!
Excellent service, convenient location, fantastic food, amazing wines, and affordable prices make it a great choice for any night of the week.
Nice people; good food; decent wine list. We had an enjoyable meal
Being frequent diners at Urfa Bistro in Los Altos, it was an easy choice to eat at Smyrna Bistro operated by the same team. Very nice, cool environment with spacious seating. Menu is very similar to Urfa's, as one would expect, but with a fair number of different items. Had a nicely executed paella that could have been just a bit hotter when served. Blend of flavors and contents was quite good. A number of our group had the short ribs. Barely any sauce left on the plates! I shared a Grilled Halloumi Salad that was quite good. At least one diner had the Branzino, executed almost as well as at Urfa, which I consider the best I've had. Stuffed Eggplant got high marks. Wine list is a bit larger than at Urfa due to more storage space. Smyrna also has a full bar, although our group stayed with wine! As Smyrna's kitchen approaches Urfa's level of execution, it will become a "Must Dine Here" place, as is Urfa.
Good food, good service, limited wine by the glass, need more choices
Excellent food, friendly, attentive, timely service, and a lovely wine recommendation that paired well with my dinner. Hubby and I will be making Smyrna part of our rotation.
We and another couple tried this Mediterranean restaurant and thought it was terrific. The arugula salad with almonds was a great appetizer followed by the various entrees in the group: Lamb chops, moussaka, chicken kabob and eggplant Parmesan. All dishes were excellent. Veggies were very fresh. Great service and ambiance and a good find on CA street in Palo Alto. Didn't have room for dessert but heard the poached pear was excellent.
Great main courses, great ambience, convenient location. The only downside was that at 850pm on saturday night, after our main courses were cleared, we were given the check and told to "take our time". Very surprised not to be offered coffee or dessert!
The food was excellent and beautifully plated. The waiters were attentive and we will definitely return!
Smyrna is one of our new favorites. The food is delicious, the service is friendly and the location is ideal. There is plenty of outdoor seating for people who enjoy that, but we prefer to eat inside, as the dining room is pretty. Our favorite starters are the calamari and the tzatziki.
Exceptional service...and very very good food! We will be back.
Wow! Our first time here and we can't wait to go back.
The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious! We had the grilled octopus and the Greek salad as appetizers, the scallops and the lamb lasagna as entrees, and the baklava and kunefe for dessert. Everything was excellent!
We were ignored most of the night and we couldn't order or get our waters filled in a timely manner. It seems as if the restaurant was short-handed because we didn't have a dedicated waiter/waitress, which made it difficult to flag a person down for service. The service wasn't unfriendly but not warm or attentive either. The food itself was just fine, but nothing special, and at these prices, there are much better restaurants in terms of food, service, and value.
Great establishment for a business or personal get together.
Halumi appetizer outstanding. Quiet elegant. Loved it.
The food was really excellent from the yummy bread, 2 kinds of soup were both good. The branzino & lamb chops were both excellent & tender.
Delightful dinner at Smyrna on Friday - this will soon be a neighborhood gem. :)
Bread arrived at the table shortly after we sat down, still hot from the oven.
The eggplant pure made for a perfect dip - so flavorful and satisfying.
Moscow mules were well-made and refreshing on a hot day. Grilled octopus were perfectly grilled and seasoned, and came with grilled cucumber and braised beans - could've been a meal all by itself. Grilled prawns were plump and juicy, with 6 large ones for a serving.
My companion had the spinach fettuccine, the portion was so large she took half home.
The only downside was that the air conditioning wasn't working (it was 95 that day). The fan kept the restaurant from being sweltering, but still slightly uncomfortable.
Will definitely return! Next time we'll bring friends.
A lovely atmosphere and it was easy to talk with four people. The staff was terrific -- professional, helpful and kind enough to bring a special dessert to celebrate a birthday. We really enjoyed the food -- great bread, spreads, lamb and fish.
Loved the grilled halloumi & beets appetizer and the grilled olives & feta! Delicious! Our entrees were all tasty though the grilled steak and grilled lamb chops were unevenly cooked - maybe a cold spot on the grill? The flavor was fantastic, so we're rooting for Smyrna to work out its kinks.
We loved everything about this restaurant. The service was excellent & the food was delicious.
We will be back.
The food was incredibly delicious and beautifully presented. The service was very, very slow. We’ll go back because our dinner was worth the wait!
Food was mostly good. Risotto was a little more al dente than I normally prefer. Eggplant based dip as appetizer had a very nice smokiness to it.
Food portions are medium to small. A bit PRICEY!! Lunch for two $75.00 OUCH!!!!
Lovely new restaurant on Cal Ave. Friendly and welcoming staff. The halloumi and beet stater was unusual and delicious. Hubby had pasta with smoked chicken, mushrooms, etc.; I had game hen. Both very good. Not cheap, but in line with other restaurants in the area. A very nice addition to the Cal Ave. scene. Thank you, Zubi. We’ll be back.
They had me at Turkish and Greek food. Innovative takes, tasty spreads, superbly succulent lamb kebabs, perfectly cooked shrimp and feta appetizer, divine Turkish sauvignon blanc, well mixed G&T, outdoor seating available on California Avenue, fast and attentive service.
This place has been open for two months. It's a splendid addition to Palo Alto's "other" downtown. Don't miss it!
Lamb shank was delicious, so was the grilled olives. Fresh bread too. Loved trying the Turkish wines. Service was excellent! Highly recommend!
Great food and service
Spanakopita was good. Family enjoyed some dishes but not others.
