A great night at this Persian restaurant. Took us a week to get a decent time reservation. Very nice inside, not too closely seated. Very welcoming staff. Food was amazing. The owner and chef personally introduced herself to us which was a very nice gesture. A bit confusing who our waiter was resulting in a few delays with dessert but this didn't distract from a great feed. Our most expensive dining experience so far in NY. Definitely recommend trying this place. A few minutes walk from Barclays.
So grateful to have had the opportunity to go to Sofreh on the night before the corona closure - if there was any restaurant in the city to have a memory to hunker down with, I can't imagine more beautiful tastes lingering in my mouth. Can't wait to support this elegant and warm place once again.
Dishes were beautiful and well executed! The airy modern space added to the ambiance.
My second visit to Sofreh and it doesn’t disappoint. The food was unique and delicious and reflective of Persian herbs and spices. We had a variety of appetizers and main dishes and each was outstanding. Eggplant appetizer and steak main course were our favorites. The owner moved gently from table to table offering menu suggestions and making sure each patron was enjoying their dining experience. We will definitely returns to Sofreh!
Sofreh is by far one of the best restaurants in New York. I was extremely impressed by the customer service, the expertly curated decor and more importantly the food. My waitress recommended the sea bass in tamarind sauce with saffron rice on the side, what a perfect creation. The attention to detail, balance of flavors and presentation were above reproach. To top it off, the chef/ owner and restaurant leadership team were genuinely engaging customers to ensure their expectations were exceeded. If you consider yourself a foodie or love food that overwhelms your taste buds with deliciousness, Sofreh is your next destination! And if you live in New York City, Sofreh is a 2 minute walk from Bergen St. station! Bon Appetit!
really lovely, can't wait to go again - really hate this character minimum b/c all I want is to convey unbridled enthusiasm
Amazing restaurant, very good food. Inexpensive considering the service.
Amazing food, great service. The owners were there and treated us with the most fantastic Persian hospitality I could ever ask for. Can’t wait to go back soon.
Fantastic food, excellent service, everything was perfect.
Fabulous food. Place beautiful. The owner always comes to say hi.
No frills with the food. Just amazing Persian food. You are on for a treat
I really liked the restaurant and food, but I was at dinner catching up with a friend and three times the waiter asked us if we could leave soon because the next table had arrived. Finally they offered us to head to the bar to continue drinking/catching up so we were happy to move. But when we got to the bar, the owner said those seats were reserved so we ended up having to leave. I was disappointed as the table next to us was there prior and after us leaving.
Amazing food and staff. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. It was my third time and I will keep coming back! <3
definitely- everything was amazingly prepared (except the rice pudding- not great)
Went for my birthday with friends. The food was lovely. We dropped a lot of money. The manager who seated us was great. The waitstaff knowledgeable and friendly. The owner was obnoxious. She cranked up the music half way through and when one of my guests gestured to turn it down a bit the owner said something ridiculous like she does it for the kitchen staff when they're on break. It was annoyingly loud, we saw the kitchen staff in the kitchen and not on break and none of them were smiling or excited about the loud music. Towards the end of the meal she put pressure on us to leave even though we were still eating (many courses) because she needed the table. She had people come by every 2 minutes to ask if they could clear the plates even though I was clearly still eating. Sadly, I did not experience a trace of Persian hospitality. Loved the food but won't be back. Very rude owner. Disappointed that I can't recommend it.
I loved everything about Sofreh! They thought through every little detail, from the ambiance to the aprons to the rice pairings. I thought the space was beautiful and relaxing and I loved everything we ordered. It's great for a family style meal. I can't wait to go back.
Sofreh is a special restaurant. The food is amazing and the few times I’ve been did not disappoint. This time we went to celebrate the Mister’s birthday with friends. Perfect ambiance and food was amazing. I’m definitely returning.
The food was very good but not sublime. The menu is quite limited, which is a shame. My husband had leg of lamb which could have fed an army. Very good. I had a spicy beef stew, also good. The rice with kohlrabi and cabbage was less interesting than it sounded.
The ambiance is a bit chilly, but I think that's because the owners specifically did not want an ethnic feel. Still, the place lacks warmth.
We had the best experience. The food is beyond this world. Authentic Persian cuisine which is also Americanized. Drinks are unbelievably interesting with a Persian style to them.
I highly recommend this restaurant and would like to go back as soon as possible. The only issue is that you could go only by reservation and this is not always easy. This restaurant is mostly fully booked and you cannot make reservation way in advance.
Experience was great! People were nice, food and service was excellent!! Will definitely go back and tell friends about as well. We have no complaints
Excellent steak and saffron rice!
Everything was great but the steak was a little tough.
This was my husband’s and my first visit to Sofreh. We’d been looking forward to it for a while. The food was pretty good. Maybe too many rice dishes? You order one of a few types of rice to go along with your entree, the server suggested we also order the fried rice (patties) as another side, and rice pudding is one of the desserts offered.
The service was a little precious. The tone is sort of like, “Isn’t this incredible?”.
The entree I ordered—chicken placed on top of a sauce—had tomatoes (an ingredient I have to avoid) in the sauce. I knew that when I ordered it and asked if I could have just the chicken, and hold the sauce or put it on the side (so my husband could try it). The waitress said no, that they couldn’t do it without the sauce. I said ok, and that I’d host try to avoid the sauce. So, that’s what I did—I scraped the sauce off of the bottom of each bite of the chicken. I know the logical suggestion would be that I order something else, but the other dishes included other ingredients that I can’t eat, so the chicken was the best choice. It was just strange that the server was more interested in preserving the original dish than in serving it to me in a way that would work better for me (the customer, who paid $125 for dinner for two).
I’m glad we tried it but we probably won’t go back.
Great service, incredible food. Will definitely come back!
Food was exceptional. Loved the atmosphere- lively, fun, and lots of energy. Will definitely be back!
We had a 6:00 p.m. seating on a Saturday which for us turned out to be the perfect time because we got there before the crowds arrived. We were seated immediately and the service was prompt and attentive throughout without being at all intrusive. The cocktail menu offers a number of unusual drinks with what appear to be traditional Persian flavorings -- the Sekanjabin martini was exceptional. The waiter was completely familiar with the dinner menu which provided sufficient variety for all five in our party to choose items they enjoyed. The appetizers and main courses were all delicious, and the waiter's suggestions were all on the mark. It was as perfect a dining experience as I have had in years.
We went after a performance at BAM
The reception was gracious
And the food wonderful!
Staff did not acknowledge note that it was a birthday. Drinks were too sweet. Dishes were confusing. Initial Server was inattentive. Other staff helped out half way through the dinner. Food was only ok. Overall overrated!
The inventive Persian food is unfortunately overshadowed by the alternating pushy and indifferent service. We literally ordered twice as much food as we needed, due to the aggressive nature of the server, who basically was adding items on to our order and misleading us in the size of portions, etc. This felt wasteful, and then once the order was placed we never saw the server again. Beyond this the service was slow and not at all welcoming.
I find the food extremely salty. After four visits, there is a sameness to the dishes (yogurt, pomegranate, tamarind).
However, more problematic is the owner/chef. She stands at the front of the restaurant. She does not greet her guests; she barely looks up. She does not come over to the tables to say hello. She does not speak to her wait staff. This is my fourth visit to the restaurant and she has never been any different. As a diner, I do not feel welcomed. I won't be going back.
I'd been wanting to come here since the rave reviews in the New Yorker and NYT over a year ago. It was well worth the wait and exceeded my expectations. Nasim Alikhani, the owner, greeted everyone that walked in through the door as if we were coming to her house for dinner. The originality of the cocktails hinted at the surprises to come. I've eaten around the world and cook a lot myself and yet was surprised by many of the flavors in the food we ordered. Prices are a touch high but the servings are quite generous and some of the dishes (like the amazing duck) are more than enough for two people to share.
Exceptional food and service. Can’t wait to come back!
Fantastic Persian restaurant. I wished for years to have such a high quality restaurant nearby and now Sofreh is there. Highly recommended!
the only persian restaurant in the world that matters, GO, go at all costs!! you must!!! don't let death take you before you get a chance to eat at this restaurant
The food shines here--beautifully prepared with fresh, interesting ingredients and imaginative riffs on classic Persian cuisine. The space is thoughtfully designed. For the first hour, the noise level was very comfortable. Then at 7 p.m., the music was cranked up to a high volume, for no apparent reason, which was a very strange and unfortunate choice. To management: keep the music low and let your diners enjoy the miracles created in the kitchen.
Great for a special meal out. Everything is delicious.
Our server was disrespectful and inefficient. Dirty dishes were left on the table when other courses were placed. The noise level was painfully loud.
Food was good, but overpriced for the relatively small portion size.
It surpassed my expectations on every level!
Beyond expectation! Not an ordinary Persian restaurant.
A little bit pricy, but worth it.
