St. Anselm - DC
excellent service and very accommodating. great food!!!
Went for the first time for our anniversary. Had a mediocre experience after high expectations and hearing great things.
Two different sets of biscuits came out cold in the center. Received the wrong side dish and had to ask to have it replaced. Lamb leg steak tasted gamey and not fully cooked in a few spots. Friends had called ahead to have drinks/carrot cake paid for and presented to us as a surprise, with a personalized card. The server didn’t communicate to us that the drinks/cake was from anyone nor did they present us with the card.
In DC visiting for biz trip & was near my hotel. Absolutely incredible place & the steak, wow! Service at all levels, excellent.
I love St. Anselm - it felt as if the restaurant is leaning back into post-pandemic service and staff seemed new and overwhelmed. So give them your patience and love (and tips$$$) as we all get back into the swing of things!
Looking for a steakhouse....that you won't feel guilty for ordering seafood, or even chicken? Then this place is well worth coming to.
The bartenders know how to make the classic cocktails, and have a bunch of more complex drinks worth trying too.
Great modern, younger take on the steakhouse, with something for everyone....except vegans, I guess.
I'll start by saying I never write reviews. But this place was SO GOOD I had to say something - it was one of the best meals I've ever had. I got the smashed potatoes, broccoli, swordfish steak and oysters. The potatoes were impossibly good - so fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside, and they came with ranch that tasted homemade. I don't normally like ranch but I loved it. The swordfish had such a soft, buttery texture, and the chimichurri sauce was perfect. The broccoli and oysters were delicious too. The ambience was also great - the booths have an intimate, cozy feel and the music is not too loud so you can hear each other talk. Great place for a date!
One of my fave DC spots. Consistently delicious food, great service, and amazing cocktails. Highly recommend
Way too loud. Was there for brunch and no reason music needs to be that loud.
My wife and I had a wonderful brunch here. Nearly everything we had was among the best we had ever had of that particular dish. We highly recommend the biscuits, the swizzle cocktail, and the French toast. The French toast was light and custardy, an absolute must-have. We never felt rushed and the ambiance was interesting and subdued. The only thing we didn’t like was that the outside chairs were not made with fat people (or anyone with wide hips) in mind. We had to switch to indoor seating in order to be able to sit comfortably.
Been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time. Finally got there last night. It’s a fun place has good vibes. Everyone is very friendly. We sat outside. The indoor seating is very close and therefore it is very loud. Glad we had an outside table. Our waiter was excellent. Great personality and very attentive. The wine on tap was good. I had a Chardonnay and Malbec. My husband had a Coke, he said it was excellent.🤣 For appetizers my husband got the wedge. Huge thick slice of bacon on top, lots of eggs and the blue cheese dressing was mild. He enjoyed it. I got the sardines. The description sounded better than it was, way too much flavoring. The bread was too thick along with the spread which was very lemony. The Sardines were good but totally lost their flavor from the spread and bread. My husband got the butchers cut steak and loved it. Cooked perfectly! I got the lamb steak which the waiter said they cook it medium. It arrived rare. The waiter saw it immediately and took it back. Came back MR. the Salsa verde was a very heavy. I could not taste the lamb so I scraped it off. Our sides were the smashed potatoes were fantastic along with the creamed spinach.
Definitely will go back. I think it’s a good group place to go, very fun!
Staff: Super accomodating everyone seemed to be pleasant, not in a creepy way or reminiscent of the South, but in the "hey, I'm not mad working here, i dig my coworkers" vibe. it was the overall comraderie for me.
Our server, Carlos. extremely exceptional; mans ( i don't know their preferred pronouns, so i'm giving the Brit TopBoy pronoun) was attentive to detail, personable; with a pleasing disposition which seemed to be the vibe, which, once again is what I got from every person; manager, bartender, busperson - all good vibes.
The food: bonkers. The biscuits are addictive little pillows of buttery goodness; dense, flaky, and not a game. We had lamb and swordfish from the bigs (menu), solid cocktail and mocktail, pan-fried mashed potato, little gem salad, and the grilled sweet potato. Dessert was mango sorbet and the newly added chocolate cake with sea salt, all dope. This is one of those places that you either, intentionally downplay because you always want to have a table and not too long of a wait or you tip insanely well so they know you're good people and won't have you standing too long. Had I had a fistful of 100s, I would have walked around sans Oprah handing out big faces.
Lengthy review shortened; eat here, order the biscuits, ask for a to-go bag because the portions are serious. Price point is palatable given that the fare doesn't disappoint.
Very good food, amazing biscuits, steaks, fish and chicken. Unfortunately, either a sign of the times for the restaurant industry in being under staffed (no fault of their own) or inexperienced staff, or both, the service was beyond painful. Our waiter was inattentive, forgot part of our order, and had a look of deer in the headlights or partially not coherent. Disappointing given that this is not a cheap priced restaurant. Will give it another shot in a few months.
Not worth the money. Service was fantastic, no complaints about anyone who waited on our table. Steak was overpriced and, frankly, tough. The menu is unimaginative. However, the wine list is pretty good.
Birthday great service thank u
The food was all very interesting and cooked very well. We had grilled fish, and we did not miss steak!
Food wasn’t amazing as I remember it. It was still good- just no wow factor... for the price. Underwhelming to say the least. Had a guest visiting from overseas and wanted to impress them with a good dinner, left a bit disappointed. I’ll come back for a drink and an app but not a full dinner again.
The ambiance and food quality are top notch. Our server's responsiveness was less than adequate.
Had a great time, went for dinner, food and drinks were great. We were able to eat outside and not be effected by the weather.
The food is EXCELLENT!
Great experience, good food, excellent service. Will go back again.
Our meal was delicious and Lou, our waitress was wonderful.
We went out for my birthday. The food was good, but i was hoping to be surprised with a piece of chocolate cake at the end. I wasn't. The food was delicious, however, you've been warned, they spare no bu tter or oil. If that's a concern make sure to ask for your food with reduced amounts.
Only issue was inside felt like there was no AC so it was very hot, and did not want to sit outside because it’s cicada season.
Wonderful service and food. Staff was quite knowledgeable.
Great food and drink. Highly recommend their brunch.
Wow! What a treat! We celebrated my son’s 21st birthday with brunch and it exceeded all our expectations. From being greeted at the door to paying our bill it was a great experience. Wonderful, helpful staff, delicious food and a GREAT atmosphere. A++++ all around!
Food was great, service was great but I just think the price was pretty high for the amount of food you received. I wasn’t looking for bottomless but brunch mains don’t come with a small side salad, fries or fruit which to be honest is really cheap and could easily be added to the meal.
Delicious food, great ambiance. Loved the monkey bread!
Overall the experience was just like the last time we were there. It seems as though St. Anselm is becoming very touristy because people are dressed very casually. The food was great, as always!
I just love this place! The food is always good and the biscuits are a great starter. This is one of my favorite places in DC.
Wonderful dinner and great to be back in a busy, great restaurant on a Friday night. Great advice from sommelier on an Hermitage Blanc that paired with four seafood dishes we ordered…and loved.
I had a lovely anniversary dinner at St. Anselm. The food was delicious, the service was spot-on, and atmosphere was perfectly pleasant.
A great place for a 7-person birthday party. Food is consistently excellent. The pork shoulder and the lamb rank.
Great services and food
Great dishes that were well-seasoned. Plentiful portions. Pleasant service!
We were celebrating our daughter’s high school graduation, so the restaurant was her choice. She’d raved about a previous visit., but it was a first for us. The food, the service, and the general atmosphere were all superb. We will definitely put this restaurant in the “rotation” and won’t wait for a special occasion to return.
It was all lovely and nice. We ate brunch there and I look forward to going back for the dinner menu.
First my neighbor snd I have gotten together for a meal since Covid.. We both loss our parent and best friend to this horrible virus. Dinner was very good and the energy
of the restaurant is exactly what we needed
The ambiance was wonderful. We were welcomed by the sommelier who offered to help us pick the perfect bottle of wine. We got the biscuits with pimento cheese to start which were amazing and buttery. The steak was cooked perfectly and the rockfish was so tasty.
