State Bird Provisions
I would recommend the restaurant overall as the process alone is an interesting experience. That being said, the process is a bit daunting for getting started if you've never been before, and our waiter was busy with quite a few tables so he just explained the menu a bit and then took off. It took a while for us to really understand the way this works and it would have been helpful for the waiter to recommend starting us off with a few of the written menu options and a couple of his recommendations as opposed to waiting quite a while for the first "cart" options to come by.
There were some standouts on the food side--the lightly fried quail was delicious and the squash mochi was really unique and tasty. However, many of the dishes that came by the table via the rotating waiters had either grown cold in the table by table viewing process or were generally lack luster. I had wanted to love this restaurant more! I think given a smaller crowd and more attention from the staff to start out it would have been a much better experience.
A wonderful, unique dining experience. Different each time we visit. I especially appreciate the care they take with allergies, preparing a menu of choices marked up with those that contain forbidden ingredients! A terrific way to handle this challenge.
Not sure about our recent visit. Everything is great as always but the food taste a bit salty
Wonderfully creative menu, with dishes bursting with freshness. My only complaint was not coming hungrier.
The food was amazing! A decent amount of really vegetarian options - which is rare for the popular restaurants in SF.
It‘s really hard to help out the dim sum style is really good for table for 2
Not much selection and very noisy. This restaurant is clearly overrated.
Really enjoyed how pleasant the people bad service was.
Wicked dining experience! Having the choice of both a menu and “dim sum” style service was unexpected but fabulous and a fun way to try a variety of items. The squash mochi is a must and I am a sucker for a good burrata! Service was great and well organized. Definitely make a reservation. It’s a smaller space & fills up quickly with people lined up out the door for the restaurant’s 5:30pm opening. Loved the food, the concept and the ambience.
Celebrated our anniversary here and everything we tried was exquisite! I can’t wait to come back in the near future.
Never has such an expericence. We had a super time for my wife's birthday.
We unfortunately didn't get to spend as much time there as we would have liked. But we managed to eat plenty and it was all delicious. We will be back
If you like unusual and creative mixes of food, go for it. Too weird for me and overpriced because of all the hype.
Better to go with at least 4 to be able to try more dishes. Enjoyed many dishes. Wish slightly bigger wine/sake pour.... service excellent!
Fabulous food and overall experience. Would definitely go again. One of the highlights of my recent SF trip.
This is a very lively, VERY noisy restaurant. If we hadn't been sitting next to each other at the counter instead of across from each other at a table we would not have been able to hold a conversation. Some of the food was delicious: the poppyseed pancake with beef tongue was among the best things I've ever tasted, the octopus and the salad were also delicious, but the short ribs were really too salty to eat ( a shame, they were so tender)and the noodle skin on our dumpling was so tough (dried out as if it was stale) that neither my dining companion nor I could eat them. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was fun. I felt the prices for food were in line with expectations, but the liquor prices were ridiculous. A very small pour of a sparkling chardonnay should not cost $19.
Super range of excellent food many exotic dishes and very attentive friendly staff
This restaurant is phenomenal! Best to ask what the waitstaff recommends because they will always pick winning dishes.
Amazing food! Fun concept. Probably my favorite dinner during our week long vacation in SF
Excellent food. Cool experience. Love the venue.
Everything I ordered was fantastic, there were about 10 different small plates to have, and each one offered unique flavours done very well. The dim sum style service really allows you to try and everything you are interested in and even gives opportunities to try something new without having to commit to a full order.
Food was delicious, service was wonderful, ambiance was cool and casual. We love everything about State Bird except the location. But lol the pluses outweighs the one little minus. It’s Definitely worth going.
Food was superb, service to match
Different and interesting concept . Fun and delicious.
Awesome environment and food experience! Came as a solo diner and was treated so well and loved the style of service. Sat at the bar and also had great engagement from the chefs.
Don't you love when you go to a place to eat and EVERYTHING IS GOOD? The only issue was that they offered very, very small wine and cider pours. Hook a brother up on a Friday Night!
A menu accompanied by 15 dim sum dishes going around. All delicious and well prepared.
The service was incredible, each dish unique and perfect. A must in SF.
We were pleased overall with our second opportunity to dine at State Bird Provisions, coordinating a reservation with our travel schedule we’ll ahead. Happy to be seated at a table in the back to reduce some of the noise to facilitate table conversation. Food glorious food, both from the menu and passed trays, were all delightful to share with our dinner guests who helped celebrate my birthday. Couldn’t pass up the seasonal matsutake toast with pine nuts and Asian pear appetizer. The garlic noodles with squid and bok choy and the red trout with hazelnuts and mandarin vinaigrette were favorute larger plates. Shiso ice cream sandwich (in a kishu mandarin macaron) with verjus poached Asian pear and the squash upside-down cake were tasty endings to the fine meal. We did supplement with passed tray items—also saw a few more tempting ones go by which we couldn’t squeeze in and must return....very fun concept!
Very good experience, from end to end; welcoming staff, great food, attentive service, will be back!
What a fun restaurant and concept! Loved it! And delicious food and attentive staff!!
The noise is so great that it's difficult to hear what the waiters are saying. The other problem is that you can't know what's coming next, so that you may have ordered too much when something comes that you'd like to try, but it's too late. Maybe forget main courses and just try all the passed appetizers.
Truly a wonderful experience. Delicious food. Delightful all around service. We sat at the counter by choice and loved it.
Very nice service and a fun atmosphere. The food was unique and flavors exceptional. I will return to this restaurant
We came back to Toronto and bought a canary melon today! Why? Because we were introduced to so many new and fresh flavours (correct spelling) that our eyes could not translate. Fun.
I would come back with another person. As a solo dinner, it wasn't the greatest. I was sat in the middle of the dining room at a two top like I got stood up. Would have loved to try more food but to be honest I felt too uncomfortable. Asked for a different seat upon sitting and midway through. With the dim sum sort of style, it's not geared to solo dinners.
A very cool and unique dining experience. With so many different things to try, it’s easy to explore and discover new and sometimes unexpected creations. Definitely try the quail! Excellent service by a team who seem genuinely invested in what they are doing. Fun!
I was nervous when we first arrived because the queue stretched down the block, but we were quickly seated once the doors opened (highly recommend making a reservation)! The atmosphere was fun and energetic with simple architecture and high ceilings that made it feel cozy but not cramped for the small space. Servers walked by with carts of food from which you could a variety of small plates. I wanted to try everything on their set menu! We tried nearly all of the small plates and had the halibut and state bird dishes from the set menu. It was a great experience and the service was welcoming and fun! Would definitely recommend to others!
