State Bird Provisions
My husband told the chefs “we’re not worthy.” We we’re fortunate to make a reservation on our vacation. Everything was delicious
Wonderful food & staff
The dim sum style service is greats Phenomenal food and service. A bit noisy but we still loved every minute.
Great food and wine served in an exciting setting.
It was a very stressful way to eat. I wish we could have seen the whole menu and just ordered everything we wanted right off the bat.
Loved the atmosphere.
Very friendly staff.
Had an amazing dinner here for my 40th birthday. The food is truly original and the flavours are awesome! Staff is very attentive. Hope to come back one day!
Great place. Everything was well made, a very delicious and dynamic restaurant.
Headline: Creative food. Boring ambiance. Surly waiter. We would not return.
While State Bird's FOOD is excellent; creative, unique, flavorful-- the rest of the experience is only FAIR.
1) The room is boring, without true SF flair. The restaurant charges a lot but looks like anywhere USA.
2) Our waiter was arrogant and literally got into a light altercation with us. Frankly, it colored, if not sort of ruined the rest of the meal.
3) Noise level is horribly loud. While you want a room to have energy and spirit, the noise level is so relentless that it interferes with the dining experience.
4) Service is Dim Sum style. Fun for lunch, but when bumper carts are constantly rolling down the small aisles, it adds to the chaos. Oddly, instead of one waiter taking care of your table, all the waiters randomly serve you. So you keep getting interrupted to acknowledge each new soul. You never feel known, as one would expect when dropping hundreds of dollars on a meal for the table. Instead of feeling uniquely cared for, this constant changing of waiters feeds the chaos.
5) The bathrooms preciously say "All Genders." While men usually don't care, most women prefer the neater, cleaner bathrooms women keep.
Even the name, State Bird Provisions, is off. It sounds WWII retro, but nothing about the room or menu is retro. The name promises a chicken specialty, but there's no plethora of bird dishes.
Bottom line: It may take months to get a reservation, but it is not worth the wait. The food is unique and excellent, but everything else is ordinary. If you seek great food AND intriguing ambiance AND great service, and great location (It's lower Fillmore at night)-- go somewhere else. San Francisco has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to our cuisine. State Bird Provisions is on the "B", not the "A" list.
many dining choices in SF, but this has about the most unique menu - stated items and then, several wonderful bites that come dim-sum style and you can choose or not. Wonderful!
Great food in a very nce setting! Enjoyed the concept which made our dinner a very enjoyable experience which I would definitely recommend others!
Innovative food. The state bird was excellent; loved the fried rice dish. Everything was quite delicious.
I have been trying to get a reservation at this place for two years. Finally for my wife's birthday I put the time into figuring out how their reservation system worked and three months to the day before her birthday made a reservation for four at 7:30 pm. I waited until 12:01 am on the first day that reservations for the date were available and was able to book. With all of the difficulty in getting the reservation let me tell you expectations were high. With four of us we were able to sample a decent variety of what they had to offer and everything was good. There wasn't a single dish that was bad or disappointing and several of our orders including the qual "state bird", fried rice, fig toast, trout and ancient grains, and the brown butter roasted corn ice cream sandwich were just amazing. It is a rare occurrence in deed when a restaurant lives up to the hype and with SBP our expectations could not have been higher. My wife and our guests all thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience, in addition to the incredible food the dim sum style service with unexpected delights tempting you every few minutes really added to the fun. We will definitely be back and look forward to bringing out of town guests for a truly unique SF dining experience.
Great food, wide variety of food choices, excellent service.
Fun atmosphere but Was disappointed with combination of elements, like the sweet bread with the liver mousse - didn’t quite go together. And the fried rice was way too sour. It’s like they were going for the summer feel but it was a little too much. The udon noodles also left a dissatisfying after taste. The only thing that was decent was the oysters. Definitely did not live up to the hype and accolade of a Michelin star.
Food is so interesting and a really fun experience. Servers work so hard yet, look like they're having fun so someone has created a wonderful work culture. Only complaint is the noise level which I'm sure is intentional. Yet it stifles conversation. Just needs some soft surfaces to absorb more sound.
Outstanding food and service. The Dim Sum style dining is fun and unique for a restaurant of this caliber. I highly recommend it. The servers were casual but attentive and personable.
Farm-to-table food served dim sum-style - refreshing! Service was attentive and friendly - I was expecting snooty since it's so hard to get a reservation. Sat at the counter which offers a front-row seat to watch the chefs. The fig on the fig toast was served just perfectly ripe and so were the strawberries on the oolong tea ice cream sandwich, although they did overpower the subtle tea ice cream flavor. The pepita macaron used for the ice cream sandwich was awesome.
Very accommodating to dairy sensitivity
Such a unique experience! The food and service was incredible! Big fan of the state bird and pork belly! Highly recommend anyone visiting San Francisco yo put this on your list of places to eat. Great job!
Coming from Copenhagen it’s hard to believe that State Bird has earned a Michelin star. The dim sum concept is fun. The service and food was good but not impressive.
Food was not as impressive as past visits. Not as much variety either. Spot prawns were soft.
Excellent - loved everything. Food was spectacular,
Terrific inventive food. We loved the pork belly, duck liver mousse, yuba with chanterelle, and oysters. The dim sum style is fun. Very good thoughtful service. Interesting cocktail list. We liked the Negroni and cappelletti spritzer. Thumbs up.
I was worrying I couldn’t try most the dishes by one person, however the restaurant is offering one portion size for most on the menu dishes and desserts. Also, it’s a great experience that I shared some of my dishes with the girl who sat next to me & I tried her ordered too. I highly recommended this place.
Waited for years to have dinner here. Loved it all. Worth the wait!
Ahmazing....theres nothing like it!
Amazing food and service. So fresh and lots of options for every diner!! Would highly recommend and will for sure be back!
Our waiters were all very attentive and food delish
Fantastic. Thrilling. As alwsys.
Loved it. We will be back. Wouldn’t come here without reservations. Here on Monday and it was packed. Great format allows you to try many different dishes. Standouts: peanut milk, guinea hen shiitake lemon soup (hope I got that right), oysters, service, lots of awesome veggie offerings.
The food is obviously incredible. Each dish features such a unique blend of flavors, some familiar but enhanced. Others wholesale new.
We had a great time. The food and service was off the charts, and the “dim sum” concept was great. We can’t wait to go back again.....
Great as always. Was an entertaining experience and fun with family that was visiting from out of town. The food is eclectic, creative, and always tasty. Ambiance is trendy, fun, and cultured, not pretentious.
Wonderful, delicious experience!
This is my favorite restaurant in the world! The food is outstanding, the service is great and it’s the most fun I’ve ever had while dining.
One of the best and most unique dining experiences I’ve ever had! Every bite was delicious and as waiters brought more and more dishes I wish I’d budgeted more for this. 10/10 experience
I would absolutely go again, the people in my party loved the food and the ambiance. It was a wonderful experience.
Innovative is not always great, but at State Bird you get both novel and fantastic food. We had 15 small dishes in total for 3 of us and only one was merely "good" rather than "great" or "amazing."
Absolutely one of the top restaurants we’ve dined out at period, and we’ve been around some of the top cities for food! The atmosphere, presentation and food were all phenomenal. Concept of part al la carte style and dim sum style serving was great and so much fun! Can’t wait to visit again from the East Coast!
