SX Sky Bar at Hotel Essex
The food took a little longer than anticipated however the customer service was outstanding. Alex our server was amazing and really made my cousins birthday the best day and evening ever. We initially went for brunch and enjoyed ourselves so much we stood for an early dinner. The food and drinks were also very delightful . The views from the floor to ceiling windows are incredible and the venue itself is very elevated and chic. I highly recommend the SX Skybar as a must do for anyone making a trip to the city and wanting to dine in style.
I called the venue after making the reservation and asked if I would be able to come earlier than 8:30 because there was a chance I may be in the city. I was told yes but I would have to be seated as a walk in because there wasn’t any reservations available. Okay, no problem. I arrived at 7:30 and was told I couldn’t go upstairs until 8;00 because there was a private event. That was okay with me because I was waiting on my guest to arrive and there was a nice seating area for me to relax. Well, 8:00 comes and we go upstairs but it was a complete disaster!!! Garbage on the floors, glasses on the tables, just a mess! I understand the party had just dismissed BUT no one should’ve been allowed upstairs until they had cleaned the space. Once we were seated they were sweeping under our feet, there wasn’t any music playing, BUT the wait staff was very welcoming, friendly and courteous. This totally distorted my idea of this beautiful place. I will definitely go back and give it another shot because once everything was cleaned, and the lights were dimmed, we had a nice time. They need better communication and the manager need better training. This was totally unacceptable.
I booked a brunch for twenty people and it was amazing! The ambiance is impeccable, the food was good, the bottomless was great but the staff was amazing (grade A)! Aubrey, the manager, was accommodating, professional and pleasant to work with. It was my birthday and she made sure everything went smooth! She's excellent when it comes to customer service! I will definitely be back.
For the past three years I've gotten my friends together for Black Friday Night Out and SX Sky Bar was the place for us. The cocktails were amazing, management made rounds to make sure everything was going great... which it was. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a wonderful environment with great cocktails.
Great hideaway after a day in the museums. Great happy hour. Sweet staff. Attentive. Outstanding cocktails. Sliders were the top of the happy hour small plates. Imaginative decor makes you feel like you've stepped into a scene from Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz!
Inexplicably, the seating makes it a trick to actually see out the windows. [?] But the sky is lovely.
Reservation for bday dinner at 845pm. we were let in at 920 due to a previous party there.waitress came 25 min late to take drink order.it was filthy and items all over the floor from previous party. Lingering patrons from the bachelor party and loud music.we we're seated at a table that came to our knees.it was not a dinner table birthday was ruined we had to leave
We went for a birthday brunch, however I would say this is much more conducive to having casual drinks than actually eating a meal. I felt bad for the waiter, as he was the only one there, but support staff was trying to assist. Food options are minimal, and just OK. I'd go back for drinks, but not sure I'd go there to eat again.
I loved SX! My only compliant is the late night menu. There is barely anything on the late night menu which is why I gave it a few stars. Other than that I will be back and make sure I come early enough to eat from the regular menu.
Enjoy!!! Had a great time! My bday celebration!
Our group went on a Saturday afternoon (4pm reservation) to celebrate a birthday. There was already one other b'day group there, plus a few other guests, but it was not crowded. Rain put a damper on the view of the outside, but inside the place has a very cool, almost retro vibe. Music was playing, and thankfully not so loud that conversation is difficult.
The food and drinks were excellent! Service (considering there weren't a lot of customers at the time) was a bit sporadic; they were setting up for an event beginning at 9:00pm, but that really should not have affected our service as much as it did. But overall, I definitely plan to check this place out again!
The space is beautiful obviously.
The waiteress was suppose to charge 45.00 to my credit card instead she charged the entire 600.00 bill to my card. She was suppose to charge 100.00 to my friends card instead she charged 600.00 plus 100.00 to the card. They still have not gotten a refund. They served all of us cold, hard fries which all had to be returned.
Good food! Wish the tables were higher for brunch but love that bottomless mimosas. Bacon pancakes were perfect. Husband ordered the French toast without the whip and said they were perfect. Wish the brunch menu had a la cart pricing for things like eggs, bacon etc but overall experience was pretty good.
Had a wonderful time at Saturday brunch! Tried almost everything and our server/manager Alaina was absolutely the best! Made us feel welcome special and was very informative!!!
Celebrated my birthday, great staff and atmosphere
The food took an extended amount of time to arrive and when it did there was hair in a dish. Disappointing, but we made it through our time there. Nicely decorated, good energy and vibe.
Took our employees for a night out and just had a great time. This is such a beautiful spot, and everyone was friendly and accommodating. Great time. We will definitely be back.
Such a fun, beautiful space for bottomless mimosa brunch! The food was incredible and not too expensive.
This place is beautiful! The food, drinks, and service were excellent. Perfect brunch choice to celebrate a birthday!
Beautiful place ! Great seating overlooking the park !
I was there and there was a live band which made my visit extra nice. It was a nice crowd. I'm not sure if the management was expecting such a large crowd because there weren't many waitstaff on hand. Our server was overwhelmed, but she was very friendly, always had a smile on her face (even when she seemed like she wanted to quit right in the middle of her shift), and was as attentive as she could be with such a large crowd and not having much help.
They canceled on me last minute. They confirmed my reservation 3 times in the few days leading up to the reservation, and then called just hours before saying that they would need to re-schedule for a different date. Incredibly rude and inconsiderate to my wife and my first anniversary plans. Will absolutely never go there and will recommend anyone I can to avoid this place due to lack of customer service.
Brunch was awesome! Bacon pancakes were delicious.
overpriced trying to be uber hip - it's just drinks
The food was mediocre at best. The pork belly was nice and thick but did not have enough acid. The eggs were good and you can taste the butter which was good. The pancakes were fluffy and the bacon cooked into it might have made them soggy.
I met some friends here, as we live in the neighborhood and have been waiting to try it out. It was very fun. The decor is fabulous. The staff was very friendly, and very knowledgeable, as well as accommodating. It is definitely a new spot on our list of favorites
Beautiful spot. Most bites were good but the summer rolls with hummus were not. Cauliflower was the best.
Loved the bar and ambience. Great food and drinks!
The food was ok, once it arrived. Apparently the kitchen was backed up due to two larger parties, but the restaurant was not at all packed.
I went for brunch here and was highly disappointed with the quality and taste of the food. I think that the service was great however, if I go to a restaurant I would like to have both quality service and food. I will not be going here again.
We had brunch there at 11am on Saturday. There were more staff than guests at the restaurant. A waitress came over with waters to take our drink order, 30 minutes later another waitress came over to ask what we had ordered for drinks... 30 minutes After that, we finally got our first round of drinks. Starving, we finally get our drink order. Another table had the same issue and actually brought us their untouched plates of food Because they chose to leave. While the food was great, and the drinks were good, the service was absolutely terrible. The only commendable employee was Nathan. I hope they figure out all the kinks and make sure everyone has specific roles to avoid this happening to another party.
Nicely decorated space, but the service was slow. They weren’t even that busy, but our drinks took a long time and the food (appetizer/small plates) took 45 minutes to receive. We had made reservations for our anniversary and were seated in the back corner at a tiny cocktail table barely large enough for drinks.
The ambiance is great: good view, cool decor, but the positive comments I have end about there. Happy hour menu is a fair deal, regular prices seem quite high. I ordered three things from the HH menu, the first item came out quick, and it was good. The next two arrived together after a longer wait and the food tasted pretty good but it was not warm. I suspect it was sitting ready to be served for a while before I got it. At that time I ordered a second drink, but I never received it, or saw our server again. Eventually we had to ask a busser for the bill, who got it for us. My second beer (that I didn't receive) was on the bill. I wasn't that upset I didn't get the beer, but I wasn't going to pay for it, so I had to track someone down who could fix the bill. None of these things individually were all that bad, but a number of annoying things kind of piled up.
I think this place is new, so they might just be having some growing pains, or its possible I had the odd sub-par experience. I'd probably be willing to give it another try in a few months or so, but I currently wouldn't recommend.
We went for brunch. We had to get up ourselves to get (1) water (2) orange juice (3) salt (4) diet coke. The service was non-existent. The food was okay, but the $14.95 for one mimosa and $14.95 for one Bloody Mary jacked the reasonable food bill to over $73, with very little service of any kind beyond taking our order. It appeared there was only one wait person. The Big Come-on was the $25 bottomless drink that Sunday, but there was no service to GET any drinks (or salt) so good luck in getting more than one. We drove from the Quad Cities for this brunch experience. Does it sound like a good one?
There were many tables with views out over the park and lake, but for mysterious reasons, the host first tried to seat us behind a wall with no view. (Why do they even have tables with absolutely no view?) He did somewhat accommodate us when we asked to be moved to a table with an outdoor view, but even then he did not put us at any of the tables near the window, one of which conspicuously remained empty the entire time we were there. Maybe we did not look cool or young enough - we are old enough to have adult children who could come to the bar, though we would not recommend it to them. Also be aware that despite the misleading "sky" in the name, this bar is no rooftop bar - it just has windows on one side. Also, it is very noisy. So if you have nothing to say to your companions, you might enjoy it.
Open air ambiance is fun and the bar food tapas are quite tasty! A bit pricey for what it is but the atmosphere makes it worth it. Slow service as waitresses are rookies and too few in number.
Such a cool indoor/outdoor space for nice days. LOVED the furniture. Everything is so unique.
Reservation no table open, Tiny tables, oversized gold chairs feet can’t touch floor or stool provided, sat pretzel leg, glad not wearing dress, no drinks for 45 mins, food came out scattered and never received one dish so the brought out two others, that were cold, still charged for dish never received. First cocktail good second one awful of same order so not consistent. Plenty of other places in Chicago don’t waste time here.
The place was understaffed and, at least our wait staff person, not competent. They could not find our reservation when we arrived, but did seat us. Food order was evidently lost and so we had to re-order. You could watch sitting at the restaurant the wait staff going from table to table with food trying to figure out who ordered what only to then take it back to the kitchen upon failure to find the correct table. Of course, the order could have been simply wrong in the first place as it was in our case when we ordered the pork lettuce wraps only to have the pork bao come out. The food is quite good. However, it does not overcome the service. The manager did comp us one drink which was nice, but man, they need to get their act together.
Had a Great Time. Food was delicious. Crystal our server did a fine job and the manager was on top of his game. Would definitely return.
The ambiance is awesome. The food is great. The drinks are tasty. The service is slow ASF! I’ve been here on several occasions and each time I have had to ask the manager where was our server because I either needed another drink or I inquired, where was our food. On my last visit, we cancelled an order because it took too long for them To bring the order out. The manager apologized and comped the meal, but the person who ordered it had to leave...
