Love this place. Have never ordered off the menu. Just let them make rolls which are always amazing.
Superb meal. Don’t order off the menu. Just ask for the chef’s creation
The food was great, but other diners are literally at your table. There is no privacy to have a conversation.
Fresh, delicious food.. pleasant service, not rushed overall a delightful experience
It was great but a very long wait between dishes. Not always so.
New Years Eve dinner
Go with the Chef’s creation. We had the most unique & tasty rolls I’ve ever had!
Wonderful as always
Best sushi in the city
We love coming to Tanoshii! It's a neighborhood and city gem.
Best sushi in the US.
We especially enjoyed the delicious and unusual "Mike's Special".
I love the service and old school feel of this place !
I love that you tell them how many dishes you want and they create the rolls for you. I love how fresh the fish is, the flavor of the sauces, and the creativity of the rolls.
If you are looking for soy sauce and wasabi this is not your place. If you want to see sushi as a craft, this place is for you.
Been wanting to go for a while, sushi was good, fresh fish unique pieces. The $26 rolls are a little pricey from my perspective.
Tanoshii is an old school joint with innovative and delicious food. The ambiance is not remotely upscale but if you go the omakase route and put yourself in Sushi Mike’s capable hands, you will have a top-shelf culinary experience. The prices reflect the quality of the food, but the BYOB option helps keep the meal within a reasonable range. Sit at the bar for the best experience.
Go for the "leave it up to you"
Great food! Love that it is BYOB
The good online reviews raised our expectations but the experience was overall disappointing.
The go-to sushi like salmon was good but the fatty tuna was a bit fishy. The uni smelled like chlorine and not fresh. I ordered grilled mackerel and it showed up over cooked on one side and semi raw on the other, the raw broccoli and shredded carrots that surrounded the fish looked depressing and uninspired. All this took place in the back room which smelled a bit like bathroom disinfectant and looked pretty bare-boned. The last insult was the bill. We didn’t get that much and it’s byob so we were surprised by the high price.
I’d say for the neighborhood they should probably up their game quite a bit.
Wish there was some indication of Tanoshii being BYOB... awkward and unfortunate discovery on arrival. Waited 15 minutes after being seated for a server to find out that they only had 3 types of soda and water. They were out of whatever Japanese drink was also on the menu. The service itself was mediocre but luckily the food was truly outstanding.
The back room just felt kind of sad. The special (10 piece chefs daily special) was a little underwhelming for $20-$25 per course.
Wonderful appetizers but after that, just
Started with “fish and chips”. Just the right amount of heat. So fresh. We went with Mike’s Special for dinner. The roll made with mushroom with avocado and chive sauce was outstanding. Best sushi I’ve had in a long time. And the service was spot on.
Great food, definitely go with the Sushi Mike specials! Amazing creations
One of the best sushi places in town.
It would be great however to « refresh the bathroom and the dining room in the back.
I love Tanoshii - freshest and most creative sushi in the city. Always get the sushi Mike special, he crafts amazing sushi based on your likes/dislikes. Word of warning - never come on the weekend without a reservation. Weekends are very noisy with somewhat delayed service, but when the fish is this good (and of good value) it's hard to complain.
Best sushi !!!!!!
Best sushi anywhere!
I visit regularly and always start with “fish and chips” and then let Sushi Mike surprise me with the best maki ever. Not inexpensive but with its BYOB status the cost is totally fair for such great food.
Fresh and unique rolls in a calm atmosphere with great service. Have been many times, and will be returning soon. Highly recommended.
Good sushi with both traditional and creative adaptstions.
Tanoshii is hands down the best sushi I’ve ever had. My husband says it far exceeds the sushi he’s had in Japan. Tanoshii will be a must-have for all my subsequent stops in Chicago. I cannot say enough about this place!
It was extremely hot inside the restaurant. The table next to us arrived 10 min after us, got their apps first (same apps) The food was amazing though. Would go back to see how it goes the 2nd time.
We've been there many times - this was a birthday meal for my wife with my eldest son. Always a wonderful meal - Just let them feed you!
We always love Tanoshii's! It's our 'Go to' for the best sushi in Chicago!
Sushi Mike is amazing!!! We loved his creative rolls and enjoyed our entire meal! It was a great way to celebrate my birthday!
The food is always delicious. We always get their fish and chips appetizer. I highly recommend getting one of sushi mike’s rolls. However, I feel like I get the same one when I visit so next time I will probably order off the menu.
Leave off the menu and rely on chef decision.Really good and original dishes from the kitchen.
