I really wanted to love Tanoshii after I visited the West Loop location. It was by far the best sushi I have had in Chicago. Unfortunately, due to poor service, I won't be going back. It took over 45 minutes to receive one roll. We of course wanted to try the Sushi Mike special, it was amazing. Not as amazing though when you hear the waitress deliver the same exact rolls to everyone who ordered them. So they weren't, in fact, customized, and were still at a premium price point. After we ordered the Sushi Mike special, we assumed ordering regular rolls off the standard menu would be a bit faster. We were wrong again, it took another 45 minutes to receive 2 more rolls. Also, the seating was so tight, I literally had the man next to me touching our table (his head actually hit my husband's twice) the entire time (which ended up being over 2 hours for 4 rolls). An extremely unenjoyable dining experience, very sad I wasted my valuable time going there.
Been many times and it’s always delicious. The waitstaff is friendly and attentive.
We Always leave satisfied all around.
Wonderful food, service and love this restaurant!
Tanoshii was great! Just wish Open Table had included a notice that it was BYOB when making the reservation.
The sushi at Tanoshii is unmatched in Chicago. No soy sauce or mayo needed- it’s delectable! It’s my go-to spot for a special group night out.
Tanoshii is our favorite sushi restaurant in Chicago! You must get the Mike’s specials and fish and chips. It’s an incredible dining experience.
It was absolutely incredible and would recommend to anyone.
Excellent food and great service. We chose the chef’s special where they brought rolls the chef had chosen. We ordered 4 rolls which was just right for 4 people. The “Fish n Chips” appetizer was great! Raw tuna mixture on a large chip like a taco chip. Everything was great! It’s byob.. no alcohol on menu. Overall a wonderful restaurant!!
This hands down one of my favorite places to eat in the city, if you are looking for amazing Interior design then this is not for you. However, if you are looking for incredibly well done Sushi and love to have the Chef take you to great experiences in food then this is it. Mike has a way of making things that can be common increibly extordinary, my partner in food crime is not a huge fan of Salmon or Tuna but loves what is done here. I strongly recommned sitting at the Sushi bar and going with the Sushi Mike special and let them take you on a journey. Go eat people and support that local business!
We love sushi, and this is probably the best we’ve ever eaten. You won’t be disappointed by the omakase dishes. No pools of soy sauce, ginger, or wasabi to cover up taste, just fantastic and flavorful right off the plate. One of the only sushi restaurants that has a children’s menu! Will definitely come back and bring the kids next time.
Every time Tanoshii delivers. Andrew is the best waitstaff ever. The rolls (off menu) are the best. Order fish and chips every time. This is the best Chicago restaurant ever. Hands down.
Love the unpretentious neighborhood feel of Tanoshii. Fish is fresh and leaving it up to Chef Mike to decide what to serve (you can give guidelines on likes/dislikes) adds to the fun of the dining experience. We were in a bit of a hurry to get to a show and the wait staff was completely pleasant and accommodating.
The service is superb. This is a BYOB so we took our favorite wine and it was a wonderful pairing for our dinner choices. We ordered the appetizer special of the evening and 2 chef choice plates. I would recommend this menu. I liked being surprised, did not have to make any decisions as there were many items on the menu I would have ordered, and the flavors were also a surprise. Highly recommend Tanoshii.
Spectacular sushi - best in Chicago. Ask for Mike’s specials. Also it is BYOB!
This was our first time here. Creative rolls, incredibly fresh sushi. We will be back.
The best sushi rolls and n Chicago. Remember that Mike likes Miller Lite
Best. Sushi. Ever. Let Sushi Mike make you something special. You won’t be disappointed.
In one word... AMAZING! Tanoshii has ruined all other sushi places for me.
I've always had an amazing food experience here. Best sushi in the city and, quite frankly, anywhere I've travelled in the world. Sushi Mike is incredible.
Get the sushi mike special
Not my first time here. Never disapointed when I return.
The best sushi in the entire dang world!
Staff was excellent, accommodating all food allergies, and going above and beyond to create a new sauce specially for our table. Food was fresh and great.
I just discovered this gem!!! Sushi Mike is the way to go, the flavors are amazing!! It is now my go to for Sushi.
One of the best sushi places in Chicago. The chef makes incredible original and creative Maki with a crazy amount of umami. Highly recommend for a date or for a college graduation meal.
Best sushi on Chicago. There were 5 of us and we did the chef's special tasting. Every piece better than the previous.
I think that this was the best sushi that I’ve ever had. We went with the Chef’s recommendations and they all were phenomenal! I will be coming back and also telling all of my friends. What an incredible gem in Andersonville!
Sushi Mike is the best sushi chef in the city. Creative and hilarious.
This place has been amazing both times I've been. I don't want to eat sushi from anywhere else!
Great neighborhood sushi place. BYOB keeps the bill reasonable and Mike's custom rolls are fantastic.
First visit to recommended Andersonville sushi/sashimi/Japanese restaurant. Early dinner before attending an 8 pm show. Service friendly and reasonably attentive. Menu traditional but special makis outstanding.
Food was fresh, spiced appropriately and served attractively. Was a little disappointed they did not offer brown rice, or plain ice cream(s) for dessert, but that is just personal preference that would boost the recommendation higher if those items were offered. Will return if occasion brings us back to Andersonville.
Server fantastic. I wish I remember her name. Sushi
This is the best sushi in Chicago. Mike is very creative and every time feels like a new experience
Love it - go there all the time due to their excellent food and friendly staff!
First time here, after living in the neighborhood for 2+ years. Its fantastic. We got the "Fish and Chips" which was prepared at our table, and loaded with flavor. We also got the omakase sushi, which is chef's choice. Fantastic. Will go again, for sure.
Just get the omakase. We had an amazing time and can't wait to return.
While the food was good I found some of the specialty sauces a bit overpowering, and would have preferred the fish to shine throw. They have tremendously fresh fish and I would have preferred those flavors to lead.
Granted it was a Saturday but it did take a long time to get each course and we noted that the restaurant wasn't full and many of the tables around us got their food faster than we did.
always amazing! Order Mike's special. Never tasted sushi like this anywhere. Pricey but so worth it
Tried it out on the recommendation of several friends and was absolutely blown away by how delicious everything was and the service was amazing! Don’t even look at the menu: order the “fish and chips” (trust me!) and then order Mike’s special rolls. We ordered 4 and each was superb! So fresh and flavorful. Far better than the typical dragon roll etc. Leave room for the mochi especially the red bean and mango! Can’t wait to go back!
The sushi here is a great example of eodmae style. No one in Chicago picks out better fish. The fish is fresh, seasonal, and expertly prepared. The omakase bites and maki that the chef prepares have complicated layers, and use fresh fruit, and oil based sauces, which heightens the normal sushi experience. A must for any sushi lover.
