It is a few years since we went to the Brickmakers. This used to be a great pub with great food.
The staff are friendly and did their best, but the place has really gone down hill. Food is basic and bland with standard food options. Such a shame, as the previous owners had created such a desirable place to go and eat, that you used to have to book way in advance to get a table. I was, therefore, really surprised to walk in and find the restaurant virtually empty, on a Friday night!!!
Hope the new team can turn this around, as it deserves to be revived, but think they need a new approach to their menu.
The food and surroundings are excellent, my only negative was the volume of the music.
We have used the Brickmakers over the last few years and have always had fantastic food and great service but this visit that was not the case . We booked for 8pm and were sat promptly but then ignored eventually we ordered drinks and our food order taken - it was now 8.45 ! Our food didn’t arrive for nearly an hour and when it did it wasn’t correct . Service was so so slow - food was ok but just not the quality of previous visits.
To be honest I left disappointed as everything was just lack lustre ...... I won’t be fishing back sadly . I do hope that this visit was a one off and normal excellent good and service will resume !
Booked here on line for 30% off our food, booked it for valentines night, the app let us do this, so off we went for dinner on the 14th.
We were greeted by the bar staff and shown to our table, there was a special valentine's menu or the standard one, we went for the standard one.
The new manager came over and welcomed us and thanked us for coming, he then poured us some water from a screw top bottle of spring water. Which I will add we had not asked for.
We ordered a bottle of pinot grigio , when the waitress came back she said they didn't have any of the pinot but had one that was very similar, which we went for. this wine was Ponte Miliano, Trebbiano D’abruzzo Italy, costing £3.00 cheaper than the pinot.
For a shared starter we went for the honey mustard sausages, which were really nice and a huge bowl too plenty for two to share.
For mains we both went for the pork belly, , i really enjoyed it , my partner said it wasn't as good as the last time we came, it also lacked the pork crackling that the old chefs used to add to the dish.
We were too full for desserts so when we finished the wine and water we asked for the bill.
When it came , there was no discount on it, so when the waiter returned I asked why the 30% hadn't been taken off, he replied that the offer was not valid on valentines night, to which I replied " why did it let us book the meal on this night if it wasn't on offer?" the waiter said he would ask the manager, he promptly returned and said ok, took the bill and then returned with a new one, when I looked at it , the Original £62 bill was now reduced by only £1.10, we waited for the waiter to return, when he did, I said that you haven't actually reduced the bill by 30% have you, he took the second bill back to the till.
When he returned again the bill was reduced by £10.50.
We paid this , but were not overly happy as we were charged £4.20 for water we didn't ask for , also we were charged for a £21 bottle of pinot when we had cheaper one
Met with old friends for lunch - we were all very pleased with our food choices
and our waitress was very attentive
We were so comfortable that we stayed chatting for ages even ordered tea (to drink !!)
Can't wait to come again
Food was excellent quality and good size portions, we were with friends who had never been to the Brickmakers before and they were delighted and suggested we have our next get together there.

The Brickmakers was just as good as under the previous owners/management. Better, in some respects, because it was quieter! The food was just as good - and after all at a restaurant, that is the main reason for going!!
I understand that some of the reviews have been very negative. As far as I am concerned, this is unwarranted and I can only assume there are some extremely 'picky' people out there.
Lovely place. Great food and friendly staff. Felt very welcome and nothing seemed too much trouble. Have been many times before and although the manage changed in recent times it's still as good and I will be going there again.
Food was hot, no sitting about waiting on hot plate, sadly they forgot a portion of chips, and then the staff just vanished, took several minutes before we could get anyone attention. Service wasn't as good as previous, no one checked during each service if everything was ok. Wine appeared after the starters were served though ordered at same time as food, though I had to ask about it missing. Fish had lots of bones. For a Saturday 2pm was quiet, left at 4pm ish still quiet, not sure if just this quiet as after Christmas.
One request, please change the chairs, very uncomfortable.

The food was quite good. We had a wide variety of things at our table and no one was disappointed. The staff was also quite nice. We were able to get a table at the last minute notice which was helpful.
The decor is nice but a bit spartan without much of the charm one normally thinks of when dining in the UK.
My only quibbles:
1). Even tho we were a very early seating, among the first of the night and when there were only two other tables seated, they decided to seat us directly across from the kitchen serving window. Not sure why but it wasn’t terribly nice.
2). I found it a bit pricey. £127 after a modest tip. Neither of my daughters had anything other than water to drink. My wife did have two glasses of wine. We had three deserts and shared an appetizer and olives. One of us had a steak, but everyone else was more in the middle of the menu.
3). Not sure if it was my American accent, but when I asked what beers they had the waiter led with Budweiser and mentioned a few other beers. I was surprised by the limited selection and settled on a Hopster. On my way out I found the selection of taps one would expect in a UK pub. Not sure why they weren’t offered?
Overall, there are good pubs close to use that will be more likely to get repeat business from us.
Lovely location and a nice menu, however the food didn’t quite live up to its promise. The pumpkin risotto was very rich, and the pork belly cooked and presented well but portion size for the price was disappointing. Service was friendly but many things needed chasing a second time and lack of coordination meant we were often asked twice for our orders etc. Overall it was good but there are better gastro pubs around.
Lovely meal and fantastic wine. Excellent setting but given the setting, the furniture could have been nicer.
Great Sunday lunch with the family, never disappoints.
Food was poor - fish and chips is a basic easy dish yet fish was poor quality and chips tasted like oven chips
Polite staff and food was very good. More importantly the kids loved it.

Have visited this pub many times for light lunches and sitting in the garden has always been a joy. Went for Dinner to celebrate my daughters Birthday. What a disappointment. We placed our order at the bar and up to that point everything still seemed OK. Our starters were served and then we were literally forgotten about. After half an hours wait we eventually called someone to tell them that we had finished starters and were waiting for our mains. Turns out they only then started preparing our mains! We had ordered 2 steaks which were overdone, all our chips were still raw and my vegetarian mushroom pie was so salty I had to leave 1/2 of it plus the chips which were just disgusting as they were raw. Complete waste of money.
Again we had to call someone to take our dishes away. All in all, just awful.
We have been using the Brickmakers for a few years and it was one of our favourite restaurants. We knew it was in new hands but were happy to see just what, if anything had changed. Firstly, we noticed that the bar area as you walk in was not very busy and we have never been in for a Sunday lunch when it isn't busy. There appeared to be only one person serving at the bar so even though it wasn't busy, we had to wait a while to get a drink. Our pre-booked table which was in the snug area, not the main restaurant. The snug was, to the best of my knowledge, kept for people without bookings but it was ok. The drinks arrived and so did the menu and one of the first things we noticed was that the middle section of the menu had been deleted so now it was only starters and mains. I am a veggie and this depleted my options. I also noticed is that there is now a 10% discretionary service charge if you eat in the restaurant. One thing that really ticks me off is a service charge. The choice I had was soup, blue cheese pie with chips and gravy or veggie burger. It was quite warm and I wanted more than soup but didn't want a gravy dinner so I had the burger. It isn't my favourite but never mind. We ended up waiting in total 45 minutes for our food to come out. My husband had the sea bass on a bed of salad and chips. My burger had no garnishing at all just a burger on a plate with a cup of chips. In fairness, this has always been the veggie burger on offer but it could be massively improved with a bit of thought. My husband ate all his dinner but felt the portion size was smaller than in the past. In the end we were quite disappointed and so decided to ask for the bill, rather than have coffee or desert. When the bill came the 10% charge had been added even though we weren't in the main restaurant. I asked for it to be removed which it was. We feel the little touches are missing, the attention to detail and we also noticed there were less staff. Feel very sad.
Fantastic food. Excellent value for money.
Aiofe was a fabulous waitress. I have three kids so the outside area is great to sit. The only complaint is the smoking. If you want to enjoy an outside meal with a family you battle with the smoking. It seems unfair to have to expose ourselves to that in order to enjoy the ambience. But Overall a favourite for us
