The Cavalier

Great stop for a light lunch. Salad and open face sandwich. Add in sparkling water and a beer - great quick snack for two.
Mahalo to our waiter / bar tender. We will be back for one of those Pimm’s!!!!
Food was great. Waiter was great. The host left much to be desired. Why on earth would anyone seat two tables next to each other when the rest of the dining room is empty?
A total pretentious vibe when you walk in the door. Waiters and waitresses avoid eye contact at all costs. I felt like I was causing any wait staff irritation to ask for anything. My salad was uneatable. However, when I finally got eye contact from the wait staff, they were kind enough to bring me a different salad which was also uneatable. SALT OVERLOAD ON BOTH! My husband had the scallop entrée that was boring and not worth the money it cost. The best part of the meal was my hamburger and delectable fries so if you’re going to the Cavalier plan on having a burger! One last note.... if you’re looking for a place to have drinks don’t go there! You’ll need twice as many drinks because of the lack of alcohol they serve in one! Total ripoff!
Hosted a business meeting at the restaurant; made a reservation and was seated within 10 mins (it was full on a Wednesday night, so reservations are a must!). Food was excellent - service was attentive, but not invasive. Portions are small, so in hindsight i should have ordered a salad to start.
Usually my favorite restaurant before theater, but so disappointed with the service and menu. The server was so uncharacteristically incompetent and menu so very limited. Do they have a change in the ownership?
little loud but great service. Would love a bit wider selection of food items but overall theses a great place for pre-theater!
I'd expect so acclaimed a "London inspired brasserie" to deliver impeccable fish and chips. Unfortunately the fish was mushy and tasteless, and rather overwhelmed by the minted pea accompaniment. Fortunately this followed a surprisingly good starter (lamb hash with latkes) and was followed by an above-average crème brûlée, and service was attentive. Overall somewhat disappointing given high expectations.
Wait quaint little restaurant so cozy with the holiday decorations up. Very friendly staff with great knowledge of your menu.
Relaxing environment with friendly staff and superb food. Never felt rushed at all.
Good food. Very warm and competent service. Great atmosphere. Would recommend it!
OK food, nice atmosphere and service. Overall pleasant dinner.
We loved everything about our brunch, especially the service. Tim took excellent care of us and the man who greeted us was lovely as well. There were good sized portions and delicious cocktails. Would definitely come back and recommend to others!
Good food and helpful service who recommended a change in what we had chosen and was right !
Beautiful interior down a hidden alley between Mission and Marker. I booked based on Open Table reviews for my wife’s birthday brunch followed by HAMILTON, followed by dinner at another Open Table gem. We ordered champagne by the glass and the Lamb Hash entrees. Followed up with coffee. Discovered the connected hotel mid brunch. Service was quiet and good. Not an “on” or “in your face” style. We will be back. The Lamb Hash? Well you have to try it now. AMAZING.
A very welcoming and friendly staff for our weekend brunch. Don't pass up the great Bloody Mary drink. Also loved the scones and clotted cream w/ Earl Grey tea.
Roasted tomato soup and the roasted Brussels sprouts were awesome! Also loved the decor.
Food was tasty and the atmosphere nice, but the waitress today was the worst. Slow service, passed by the table several times and ignored us, despite intent eye contact and trying to wave her down. The manager stepped in, I think he noticed.
OMG. THE CHICKEN
Food was very good. Staff was attentive. I bit pricey for the portion amount. My only complaint was we noted this was for a birthday and no one mentioned it, said anything, or acknowledged the birthday.
The buttermilk pancakes here are the best in the city! They are freshly made from scratch and incredibly tasty.
Food this time around was a huge disappointment. The scotch egg had very little flavor and the oil it was fried in was stale. The fish in the fish and chips was mushy, and again, the oil was off. The Brussels were so salty that I couldn't eat them. Usually, the food at Cavalier is impeccable. I don't know what went wrong this time, but I hope a change in the kitchen will improve things. I won't be back until then.
Excellent service and food. It was a little loud but still fun.
The cavalier is quickly becoming a goto place for me. Great food, great drinks and great staff. It is also a great pre show place when going to the golden gate theatre.
Brussels sprouts are fantastic. (I’m keto so it’s a great option to the mashed potatoes). And the tar tar is delicious!
Service Daniel was great. First time here myself and spouse. Salmon was super, loved the reduction sauce. Pork tenderloin was good, requested pork cooked medium should have requested medium rare. Sauce was great.
Was seated in bar area, little noisy. Maybe less noisy in separate dinning area. Overall enjoyed food and service.
Thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Service was outstanding, the room is lovely and comfortable, and the food was fantastic. Highly recommend the steak frites with a petite filet.
We enjoyed our meal and drinks but our overall experience was marred by the waiter who charged us for 10 drinks we didn't order. When we pointed out the extra charge he laughed it off with a lame excuse. We felt that he was either very careless or was trying to get away with something. Maybe he mistakenly thought we were tourists who wouldn't notice or care about the overcharge. Either way we weren't happy about it.
Inexplicably, I can always get a table at The Cavalier, even last minute. It's essentially identical to its sibling Marlowe, which is constantly booked solid. And hey, I don't get it, but I'm delighted to take constant advantage of it. You should too! Trying to plan a nice dinner TONIGHT? Grab a table at The Cav. Get a cocktail and Brussels sprout chips and the burger, and thank me when you sober up.
Always lovely!! Noise level very high until the theatre goers left.
Once again, a great location for a business lunch--convenient for people from the East Bay, with BART an option to get around traffic---and easy to get to from downtown SF. Good drinks and beverages and tasty food. Quiet enough to talk.
Will be there again soon.
Going to The Cavalier is always an experience and one that I have noted to myself I should do more often. From the moment you walk in and the friendly greeting at the reception, then take a look around at the eclectic Brit style from black and white chequered floor tiling to the railway carriage dining area, white linen, and collection of Old English hunting scenes, it really is a delight.
At the back is a very cool bar, Marrianne's (Faithfull) is the kinda bar I want to hang out in, forever!
Never mind the design and the decor, the food is really good too. Good old British inspired favorites but with a twist and a level of quality that would make a proper Brit blush. We were there for lunch - Devilled Egg Sandwiches with the crusts cut off, good old (and the best I have had in the United States) Fish & Chips with an English Pea Salad and Aoli, then, an Apple & Frangipane Tart with Cinamon Icecream, and finished with a good old pot of Earl Grey Tea!
The service was also excellent. Our waiter was so attentive, helpful and pleasant.
The combination of a great place, great food, and great service makes The Cavalier a place to go visit when you are in San Francisco for sure!
I am looking forward to going there for the Full British Breakfast sometime soon maybe with a Bloody Mary from Marrianne's!
Very helpful, friendly staff. And I love the food here.
Very much enjoy coming here. The menu has just the right amount of options without feeling overwhelming. The food is cooked to perfection and the service is always quick and attentive.
Great service. Nice that they remembered it was for our anniversary. The complementary champagne was a nice touch.
Deviled egg tea sandwiches were delicious, and served up fast!
Hangar steak with frites looked delicious - I’ll try that next time for myself.
It used to be great last year
I loved all my food typically
This Saturday there was a strange bitter taste in everything - almost like too much thyme or something similar (roasted chicken)
My party also has the fish and chips and they needed to get extra salt (and they’ve had the same meal at the same place before and it was amazing)
The pea salad was barely eatable as well - and I love British food
Lastly it’s terrible that they took away their sticky toffee pudding - that would have compensated me from the sub par meal
Pork is very good . Scallops are a little salty. Interior lights are too dark for us .
But overall we enjoyed the dinner very much.
Food was not great and since it was expensive it was a let down. The dessert we had with the house made cinnamon ice cream was spectacular though.
Great option for pre-theatre dining (Golden Gate Theatre). Friendly, attentive and cognizant of our time constraints. Excellent food and cocktails. No complaints.
The server was very rude and he took away our food without permission. Overall, very terrible experience.
It’s a bit expensive since there’s not much on a plate and we had to order more. But so so good.
