This is a lovely pub with extensive well kept garden and a well-kept playground for young children. The outside seating are is also served by an outdoor bar and area to order food and drinks make the experience of being outside feel less remote and detached from the pub itself. The young staff that we met were very friendly and helpful. The food is good quality and well presented, though the prices are at the top-end of what you would expect; probably accounting for the surroundings and the play area.
What is disappointing is to find a ‘10% discretionary charge’ added to the bill; this is mentioned in small print at the bottom of the menu but by then it’s probably too late to get up and leave. This 10% makes the whole experience poor value for money, making a standard chicken burger £15.40, a (rather small) pie and mash £15.95 and a child’s meal £8.25... a shame because otherwise we would visit the Drift again.
Although staff were friendly , the menu was very limited and food wasn’t very well presented.
Have been twice this week. First time we had table service, second time I had to order from the outside bar so I don’t know why it was different and nothing was explained. I paid the service charge on both occasions as staff were pleasant and food was good but I prefer to choose to pay service rather than it be added automatically. Have never had a bad meal there
Food was really good , but service was incredibly slow , even when it was considerably empty.
Worst service I have ever witnessed
Dinner was ok. The restaurant wasn’t particularly clean. We needed to ask for the table to be wiped even though it had been set already. Even after the cursory wipe it was quite sticky. The kids starter veggies were dry and had clearly been sat around for a while. The continental breakfast was pretty shoddy though. On day two, there had been a wedding the night before so the drinks and plates of meat/cheese were laid out as a buffet which was a surprise given it had been brought out to each table individually the day prior presumably during to Covid. I am pretty relaxed generally but I wasn’t keen on getting food for my family from a buffet style with Covid rates rising.
Not told we would be sat in the sun outside when we booked
No vinegar for the fish and chips ?????
Wouldn’t take cash had to get the person who’s Birthday it was to pay by card ????
Won’t be back
Quite disappointing as the location is lovely.
Slow service and food very average and overpriced.
Understand times are challenging post lockdown but they really need to up their game.
We booked a table online only to find outdoor service only! With minimum staff. Pork was great however it was described as a Roast lunch, but was definitely not! Beef was described as sirloin & we were asked how would you like it ? Came out as two slices of over cooked beef. Manager not very tactile. Completely different experience from our last visit, probably won’t return.
Disappointing trip. Only option was to sit outside and half the table was in direct sunlight. Took over an hour for food to arrive and it was a very hot day (30+ degrees) and when the food arrived it was luke warm. Wouldn't come back again.
Waited over an hour for a salad and fish and chips, garden like any pub anywhere, food mediocre, frightened to send anything back as you would have to wait for a replacement.
Great service, delicious food and great location. Would recommend.
Excellent as always love the atmosphere and was made to feel very safe. Temperature was taken at door as well as track n trace first time I’ve eaten out since the start of Covid
On the whole we were disappointed with our dining experience due to have to remind the waiting staff about getting us cutlery (in the end we had to take some from an empty table or we would have been eating with our fingers) water and desserts. The restaurant was not full so no excuse for poor service we will not be booking here again or recommending to friends.
Only reason we did not ask for the 10% service charge to be taken off the bill was 2 of the starters and 3 of the mains were very good.
Poor service and average food. Would not recommend and will not return.
We had to wait outside while several staff walked past us. They looked at us and not one of them said anything to us. It was about 10 minutes later when one the staff came over and asked if we had been seen. The food was not worth the price we paid. And there wasn’t enough options on the menu. The coleslaw we had was off and smelt vile. The seats were stained and looked unhygienic. We personally Would not recommend this pub.
The main problem was that the garden was unavailable (covid restrictions I think), it was a bit "tak it or leave it" in attitude (will probably stop post-covid if ever that occurs). Redeemed by very well presented food. Quality over quantity.
Not as advertised couldn’t sit outside due to lack of staff food was awful salad leaves were soggy and of date and chicken didn’t taste of anything. Asked for the children’s brownie and came up with dark chocolate adult style large pudding not suitable for toddler - we didn’t feel well after
Very pleasantly surprised with our lunch, our only disappointment was that we couldn’t eat outside as it was a lovely warm day
Really disappointed with my visit as I’ve always had great service. There was only 2 of us the waiter got the drinks order wrong, I asked what the mud pie was on the menu and he replied steak. I said on here it’s marked vegan he just shrugged his shoulders. It wasn’t on the specials board it was in main menu. It meant the only choice I had as a vegetarian was a curry or salad. No warmth or politeness just matter of fact attitude. Curry was nice however didn’t come with nann bread they did a toasted Bread instead. Then the bill came and the card machine wouldn’t work and they refused to take cash. We tried the machine at the bar and again their internet wasn’t working so it wouldn’t work and they eventually accepted the cash. Your menu was poor, we couldn’t open the window and it was baking hot, there were flies all around the table, the waiter needs to learn to soften his service and get a simple 2 drink order correct.
Last minute decision to have lunch in The New Forest and found the pub online and made a booking. Looked at menu before arriving and Smashed avocado buttermilk chicken and bacon burger was chosen. It was delicious but no avocado. Waiter said it was in the Mayo but wasn’t so I asked for a bowl. Good service
I’m a vegetarian not enough choice. Desserts poor choice
Would have been nice to be told when i booked that it was outside dining only. It was a very hot day and although most of the tables had umbrellas the sun was very hot on my back.
We wernt given a choice of where to sit, but I noticed other diners were able to choose.
Considering how hot the sun was I probably wouldn't have booked had I'd known it would be outside dining.
The food was lovely tho.
Great service, thank you
Great food and very good service.
A mistake was made on my bill and I was charged for two tables accidentally. The manager politely acknowledged the error and was very apologetic, but strangely I've had to apply for the refund and send a form? Seems an odd thing to do but overall a very good experience.
Great location in a beautiful surroundings.
Food was good value and presented well.
Small hiccup with waiting for a drink but all resolved in the end.
Will definitely make a return visit.
Still good food and service but prices are now too high for what it is
Nicely presented venue with very good service. Menu entirely suitable for the venue and very well cooked and presented. Parking fine. Easy to find. Will visit again if in the New Forest.
Unfortunately I’ve tried three times now to dine at the drift, we live 40 mins away, and each time we’ve come we have been told we can sit in the garden, despite booking a garden table!! We have three children so always prefer to sit out in the garden. The manager was so rude and un accommodating. I will not be returning again and will making friends and family of the experience.
Quite average , nothing to shout about
Expensive for a meal which required very little preparation beyond putting items on a plate and was not overly special or unique. Also, added to the price was a non-negotiable 10% 'service fee' which I thought was a bit of a cheek.
We booked our table using the website which was very easy. On arrival we sanitised, checked in on the nhs app and had our temperature taken before being shown to our table, in spite of the extra measures there was still a nice relaxed feel to the Drift.
During our visit we were served by three different members of staff all of which were very pleasant and couldn't do enough to help.
Food wise, our youngest ate from the children's menu, which he said was very nice, the rest of us had squid and halloumi to start, and burgers and pork fillet for main course. The portion sizes were generous and all of it tasted absolutely delicious.
We can't wait to go back.
Lovely simple lunch after a walk, really lovely service!
Very pleasant setting and food was excellent. Service was a little slow, but we did arrive earlier than we had booked.
Service was poor. It look half an hour for my desert come out and when it did it was cold. To get anyone’s attention, i has to get out of my seat to ask. The restaurant was pretty empty too. It’s a shame because the main course was delicious.
We visit The Drift often due to being so local and it's always a lovely place to eat. Our lunch yesterday, although tasty, was not all served hot. My veggie roast was warm(albeit tasty), my son's burger was warm yet my husband's pie was piping hot! We wondered if ours had been plated up before his had finished cooking perhaps?
But the food tasted good and it was a nice, calm place. It felt a little less 'cosy' than normal but I wonder if that was due to the distancing measures in place which are understandable.
The shining star however was Joszef who served us from beginning to end. He was attentive, friendly and welcoming. What a great member of staff - I hope this can be fed back to him. Many thanks.
Really friendly and really good roast dinner
Certainly would recommend.
First Sunday lunch out after lifting of restrictions. Food was truly excellent, very well presented and perfect portion size. The Drift has always been a favourite but the kitchen seems to have gone up a notch. Will certainly be returning and strongly recommend as a Gem of the New Forest.
Service a tad slow, food excellent.
The Drift had only been open for two days after restaurants were allowed to open following lockdown. They had a (mostly) clear one-way system, in one door and out through another. We felt welcome, and totally safe and relaxed and had a very pleasant meal. The dog was comfortable too, with her own bowl of water. A happy day.
