The best part is that you can’t get bored. Amazing music, food and environment. Many options just in one place.
We had to ask for our food three times before we got our full order (over an hour after ordering). The venue itself feels like it could be a generic chain restaurant somewhere - very soulless. It is quite loud and the staff were not particularly attentive. I was interested in checking out the new Espy but I won't be going back.
Service was great, Ray and Beth were amazing. Too noisy. Disappointing that we can’t take leftovers with us. Felt rushed and kept being reminded that we only had a 2 hour booking. We were reminded of this about 4 times within 45 minutes.
We arrived a touch early and were promptly seated at out table. The waiter was efficient and prompt as well as courteous. Once our entire party had arrived we ordered our food which arrived at that perfect time, between drinks. Which by the way were swiftly attended to. Even the cocktail was enjoyed. I highly recommend this to people looking for a cool venue with great service and food
It was great food and wonderful service and the atmosphere was great , staff was friendly and very helpful, I would come again to the restaurant
Excellent wait staff and very good food prepared exactly as requested.
We ordered the squid.. This was very chewy and definitely overcooked.. The side dish of roast vegetables was fine. We were in a hurry and would've sent the squid back had we had time. The service was good.
Went to meet old friends for lunch. We finally left at around 8.30 after being relocated upstairs to the cocktail bar by your awesome staff. Four oldies had an absolutely great experience.
Hi Chris, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this great review for us! We are so glad you had a great time dining in The Espy Kitchen and hope to see you again soon. Thanks, The Espy Crew.
We arrived promptly at 12.15 pm and it was explained that the smaller shared plates would come out first and the mains later so if someone wanted something small to eat then they would have eaten theirs by the time the larger meals arrived for everyone else. The 5 of us chose one small dish to share first and all ordered a main. We did this within 15 mins of arriving. At 1.45pm our mains finally arrived and by this time our lovely waitress KG had apologised copious times and offered us a round of drinks. Our order must have got lost. While I enjoyed my meal I can’t say it was value for money and I’m not a big eater by any means. All in all it wasn’t a great experience and disappointing for a birthday lunch. I felt sorry for the waiting staff who had to smooth things over for the incompetence of the kitchen staff.
We had an awesome lunch, the staff were lovely, food was delicious and the room had a really great vibe. We will definitely be back and I would absolutely recommend others to go.
We had a table for 10 in a great little alcove away from the crowds. However, we had a freezing cold draft over the whole table and we had to keep our coats on for our entire meal. The service was exceptional and very friendly. The feed me menu was mostly delicious and plentiful however the Brussel sprouts were very un palatable with a very strong anchovy flavour through them.
Very disappointing. Espy Kitchen cold, dull lighting for the middle of the day and soulless. Friendly staff but uninspiring menu, reinforced when food arrived.
Just loved it our waitress was lovely and knew the history of the place very well. Food was great and plenty of it without being too much. It is so beautiful since its makeover just love it and really glad it's just down the road.
If you knew the famous "Espy" Hotel in days gone by, you will be aware that the reincarnation of it is a very different place indeed. However, if you suspend your feelings about the old Espy, you may still find an experience at the new version pleasant (much of the time, if you want actually to have a conversation over the noise, you'll have to choose where you sit or stand wisely). In the Espy Kitchen, the surrounds are elegantly casual and the staff are always attentive and intelligent. The mixed drinks are very good, and although I did not order from the wine list, I seem to recall it looked quite good. The food I think needs some attention. Dishes seem somewhat thrown together out of pre-prepared elements. Certainly, the reality is that things will be reheated but this can be done successfully. A cauliflower side dish was under-reheated and had the feel of being whipped out of the fridge and just dressed up a bit for the table. Ingredients shared in common across various dishes also adds to the feeling that the elements of menu and preparation savings could be 'disguised' a bit more successfully. Unfortunately, places need to be aware not to be a victim of their own success, and the re-opened Esplanade Hotel is absolute overrun with popularity; it will be interesting to see how successfully they keep an eye on quality.
We had a fantastic meal, the hostess was extremely accommodating.
We will be back
Staff really attentive though were a bit over zealous in clearing before we even finished!
It was disappointing to be charged for another tables drinks when we received our bill so overall a little disappointed
Should I have to admit, I am not a hardcore metallica fan? So, I was a bit disturbed by the choice and loudness of the music, but nobody else seemed to bother and it was Friday night!
I love the fact that the kitchen is open so you see how the food is prepared. For my taste a bit too much olive oil and you know what? My partner loved it.
The authentic waiters&waitresses were very helpful and so thank you for your enthusiasm.
We will come back : )
Lovely night and well cared for by staff . Good atmosphere
Great venue, service and atmosphere, however was hugely disappointed with the food. Upon looking at the menu we were really excited by it however when the food was delivered to the table it was a huge disappointment. We ordered a number of dishes that the table shared from the starters, salad and mains. Serving sizes were very small for the prices that they were charging eg Calamari Salad. The Grain Salad tasted like it was all canned products and had no flavor. Overall really average food and disappointing that I would not return to eat there. Hope they can take this on board and improve their menu as the venue and service was pretty good.
We had a great Sunday night dinner with our young teenage sons. The unfortunate thing is having to walk through the main bar and coming out at 8.30pm with extremely drunk patrons in the main bar. There were also 3 other separate families having dinner at the same time as us, some with younger children. We are quite an open family to our children understanding social drinking but even that was to full on for them to have to walk through and they felt quite intimidated. We love going out for a Sunday family dinner and They loved eating in the kitchen but would love another access option.
Nice environment. Very small portions of food for the price.
Great booking help from Julie, and Ray was outstanding looking after our party.
Food very good, little delay due to it being very busy but offered complimentary bubbles which made everyone smile.
Would definitely recommend for a large group.
Order got lost - waited well over an hour for our meals, which then still arrived at different times. Maybe it would be better during the week when they arent so busy ...
Food was very good, my eggplant dish was quite amazing, but I would prefer if there was a dish or two making a stronger reference to dishes that were served in the old Espy Kitchen.
We had a fabulous night at the Espy Kitchen. From the minute we walked in, the staff were helpful, attentive and super friendly. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. We moved to the front bar after dinner and had a few more drinks which was fun. Nice unpretentious crowd which is rare these days :)
The ambience and staff were exceptional, our server was just absolutely wonderful. The main meal I had I totally disliked and didn’t eat. Had the creme brûlée for dessert which was delicious. The noise level was off the charts. Had to almost shout at my partner to be heard.
Both had fish and chips with a small salad for $26 and a bottle of rose $39 although found it a bit fruity and prefer dry.
Meal arrived quickly and tasty pub food. Surprised we couldn’t take home the 1/4 full bottle of wine as it wasn’t allowed.
Great friendly service from everyone.
Fabulous place for any event.
The restaurant was drafty which was not ideal as it was a cold winter night. The food came out all at once. And the sides were over cooked. We felt they had been precooked and kept warm prior to serving. Nothing worse than mushy roast cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. This was our first time to the Espy after rave reviews. We had high expectations and left wondering what all the fuss was about. Don’t think we will be returning anytime soon for the food at least.
Good food reasonably priced. Booked on line and seated at table in centre which was in the path of the doorway. Very draughty had mentioned to staff when we arrived but reassured would not be an issue as overhead heater. However spoilt experience as was like being in a wind tunnel. Left restaurant after main meal to sit at a more comfortable area of the bar.
Hi Mary, Thank you for your feedback! My sincerest apologies that the wind was so strong on this occasion. We do try and prevent the wind by keeping the door shut however when letting guests in we are aware the wind can pick up. The team are aware of the issue and are currently looking for ways to prevent this to ensure guests are comfortable through their meals. Hopefully you still enjoyed your evening out in the Main Bar! Thanks, Emma Albers Senior Duty Manager
We loved the food and character of the new Espy Kichen and adds to our already favourable memories of the old Espy Kitchen. We will definitely be back for more good food and wine ... and fabulous music too in the Basement which we cannot overlook. We love all the fabulous little details you have put in to make it a memorable experience
Hi Cazz, I am glad you had an excellent experience with us in Espy Kitchen! Looking forward to having your back through the doors soon. Thanks, Emma Albers Senior Duty Manager
No cheeseburgers for the kids (apparently the buns had run out?), no ginger beer (also run out), and a very rude waiter all made for a very disappointing experience. I took some friends from overseas there after we saw the penguins on St Kilda pier. Thank goodness the penguins were great because our experience at the Espy certainly wasn’t.
Don’t call it a “Sunday roast”, if it’s just a steak with a bit of gravy.
The disappointing moment was waiting for the food to arrive. There was four of us at the table and one friend received their pizza at least 10mins before everyone else got their food. As she has manners and did not want to dine alone, her food was cold by the time the other meals arrived. Then another friend at the table had her meal’s order forgotten. Meals should arrive at the same time.
Atmosphere was fun, staff were attentive but oversold quantity of food required. Food was good.
Unfortunately the quality and value of the food was terrible. The spiced lentil burger was tasteless and rock hard, almost still frozen? Pizzas were small for the price and generally the selection on the menu was limited and super boring. Service was ok, but nothing special. This is a great space, shame the food let’s it down. Menu needs a serious overhaul. Wouldn’t bother coming back until that happens.
But exy but food was good quality. You can see that they've spent a huge amount of$$$$ on this place
Great friendly service with yummy food and even yummier cocktails. Made my B'day dinner quite special! Thank you Espy Kitchen
Hi Connie, I am glad you had such an excellent time with us in Espy Kitchen! Looking forward to seeing you back through the doors in the near future. Thanks, Emma Albers Senior Duty Manager
Great service. Good music. Great food. Love the decor.
We walked out after seeing the very poor menu . I traveled from Geelong . We were the only people in there at 1.00pm which is understandable because of menu .
