The Fish Market - San Mateo

Very reliable food and service. Had the fish and chips (cod) which were prepared perfectly. Other diner had scallops with linguine. This isn't offered on the menu - usually with shrimp. But asked the server and she was very agreeable. Scallops were nicely prepared and it was a generous serving. The restaurant was busy and very noisy. But it is a neighborhood family spot and everyone seemed to be having a fine time. Recommend for fresh seafood.
Dinner with my college son.
Food is consistently very good, service is good, prices are a little high but the quality is excellent
The restaurant was to noisy
We could not hear each other talk
The chairs were solid wood and very uncomfortable for me
We left early because of poor service
Too much noise and being very uncomfortable
In the wooden chair
I ran restaurants extremely similar to this in Hawaii for many years. The fishmarket apparently has slipped. At least in San Mateo. Play presentations and cooking executions were not done very well. My swordfish was way overcooked, my wife’s shrimp it was overcooked and the risotto Was served on a plate in a pile! With so many choices on the menu one would think he would handle everything with the utmost care. I hope this was just on my experience. I will say that our steam clams were very good but there was not enough butter in the broth.
This was my first time dining at The Fish Market, and it will certainly be the last. I ordered grilled fish, which was so overcooked it was dry, and a side of broccoli, which was so overcooked it was limp. My vodka and tonic was all soda water, and the chardonnay by the glass had turned. Our waitress was completely disinterested in discussing menu options, and seemed annoyed during every interaction. I don't ever write bad reviews, but this experience really deserved one.
Had my birthday luncheon here and it was nice and quiet at 11:30. Later on more customers came in but it was never too loud when we were there. I had the lite eaters combo skewer with au gratin potatoes and cherry tomatoes. Super yummy!!! and just the right portions for me. Mom and auntie liked the fish and chips. The waiter did everything flawlessly- kitchen forgot my mom’s veggie substitution but she didn’t mention to waiter because there was plenty of food without it. They brought a most fabulous and delicious birthday dessert, warm butterscotch cake with vanilla ice cream, and enough forks for us to all share it! 😄 omg I want that recipe!!
Our reservation was for 7:15 and when we arrived we had to wait 20 min to be seated. After they seated us we didn’t even see our server for 20 min and she was extremely rude and. It took another 20 minutes to get our drinks after we ordered them. So after an he of being there she finally brought us our drinks and then we ordered appetizers which took another 25 min to get and they didn’t even come out at the same time. She finally took our order and that took another 30 min to get and in between this whole time she didn’t come to check in on us one time. At one point another server starter noticing it and came over and asked us if we needed anything. Food finally came and it was really good but the service killed it. It was our first time there and We won’t be returning.
What was supposed to be a relaxing great dinner for my mother-in-law‘s birthday turned into a huge disappointment for both of us. I ordered shrimp risotto and my mother-in-law ordered a crab Louie salad , after waiting almost an hour to get our food The waiter finally brought my mother-in-law‘s crab Louie to the table with a side salad for myself and said that the kitchen was running behind and asked if I’d like something else that would be quick to come to our table like fish and chips and I said no I would like to wait for the risotto and he said that they were having an issue with the risotto and offered me a crab Louie salad. I then waited another 20 minutes just to get a salad by then my mother-in-law was done with her meal I was really bummed and disappointed that I did not get risotto ,while waiting for our bill the table next to us had ordered risotto as well and was told the same story, after waiting 45min for her meal.
Wonderful place to have a relaxing dinner with friends
Great food and a great view combine for a tasty experience! Any fan of fish will be a fan of The Fish Market.
Swordfish was wonderful, fishwife rice was good, but roasted vegetables were overdone. The restaurant is one of my favorites but the chef may have had an off night on the vegetables.
Always consistent, many choices, friendly staff,
Big party going on. Had to wait until my friend got angry and then they were able to seat us.
Great food as always - service very accommodating/flexible - thank you
The hostess was not nice, no smile, angry face. Rest of of staff were ok. I would not call it friendly. The food was over priced.
We had lunch with friends on Saturday the 15th - the food was good - my friends had salads and I had the shrimp scampi. the server, who was not friendly from the beginning, brought out all of the cold salads first and I waited too long for my food to arrive. He should have waited to bring everything together considering their food was cold and mine was the only hot dish. We asked a few questions in the beginning and our server was obviously bothered by this. I would return again due to the ambiance and food and hope that we would have a better server.
It was perfect as usual. Great food and atmosphere. Food was amazing. Service was perfect!!
The fresh Grouper was very nice. Mine was blackened, partners was lightly fried. We both had them served with fresh vegetables which were perfect - a slight crunch left without being overdone. Don't forget to try a mango martini.
For apps we had oysters and the warm crab dip; both were super! For mains, my cousin and I had the Cioppino (lazy man version, haha) and it was excellent! My fiance enjoyed the bacon-wrapped scallops with tiger shrimp as well.
Ordered our favorite dishes and we were not disappointed. Nice scallops and sole.
Been there twice in the past couple of weeks. Both times with reservations. Arrived 45 min early each time. When our reservation time approached, table still not available for at least 15 min. There appears to be issues with table coordination. Once we were seated food and service were great. Love that they serve roasted vegetables as a side option.
This is our go to restaurant. We decided to celebrate a family birthday. The food was yummy (as usual). The service wasn’t up to par. The waiter was not friendly, didn’t introduce himself and refilled drinks only after we asked.
Fish Market great views and good feelings. I was a little let down with the fish and chips as I don't feel to was cooked long enough. Our server was not that outgoing and talkative. At one point the dirty soup bowl was left quite long on the table. Maybe just not a great day for me at the Fish Market as I usually have an outstanding experience.
Fried calamari was good. Corvina sea bass was overcooked , dry and tiny for 27.00. Sourdough bread was good.
The Fish Market has always had the best fresh seafood and service. They made me an extra half order of steamed mussels, without my even asking, because they thought the mussels that day were small. Now, that's good service! We've been return customers for 30 years!
We were having a birthday lunch on a most busy Friday - so the service was of course a bit slower than usual. But our server was very attentive when she was there - and provided us with a complimentary dessert for the birthday lady.
I wish I could find the most quiet area of this restaurant - it can be difficult to have a conversation across a table of more than 4.
Nevertheless, we will continue to think of it first for a celebration of any kind.
Old school market ans restaurant. I like it a lot.
The seafood is high quality and fresh. Very enjoyable.
This restaurant was recommended by friends who use Toco where. Tonight they’ll three of our dinners came out pretty much cold. My potatoes were cold for sure on the inside, spring was not even warm. Very disappointed . Service was hard to find most of meal. I would not recommend this place.
The whole experience was pleasant, from walking in to ordering food. The meal it self was superb the seafood was extremely delicious and fresh. I’d highly recommending this place.
The fresh seafood, the service, and the value are worth it to drive across the San Mateo bridge from the East Bay.
We had to wait one hour to get seated even though we had a reservation. No one offered us apology.
fresh food, delicious
Brought my mom for lunch to celebrate her birthday. She loves this place because the food is really good and they sit us near the window and she feels like she's on a cruise. Perfect place for a mom/daughter lunch.
Always love the Fish Market! Sat indoors this time !
The fresh New Zealand swordfish was incredible. Service was excellent
We really enjoyed the restaurant. Food was great!
