Our second visit for Sunday lunch - excellent food, service and like the slightly quirky ambience of it.
Great place to take visitors for the best Sunday lunch especially as they do gluten free
We had a great visit to The Fox. The staff were wonderful and the food delicious - we will be back!
Lovely pub, nice outdoor area out the front by the stream & nice quirky features indoors in the seating area out the back. The food was amazing - all together a truly lovely find!! 😊
Delicious food, great space - all we’d expected from Mark Hix. But….we ordered a glass each of the house white (before ordering food) and were encouraged to order Viognier instead because “whilst it’s more expensive, the house white is a bit sharp.” If your house wine isn’t good enough to recommend, don’t sell it - we were made to feel cheap a) for sticking with the house wine and b) asking for bread, being told that meant paying for the focaccia with whipped something or other. We just wanted some bread with our starter and were finally allowed to have some as a favour (for less £s than the option on the menu). It was a shame as that coloured our experience but with such great food, I will go back.
Food, wine and service we’re all good. Unfortunately it was very noisy and there was also a dog with the people on the table behind who stank and kept coming under our table. We don’t mind dogs in restaurants as long as they are well-behaved but we are not dog lovers (not everyone is) and we were not impressed with having to put up with it while we were eating our not inexpensive dinner.
Nice welcome and very attentive service. Pigeon breast and sea bass were faultless. Addition of some bread with the broth would be nice. Ice cream superb. considerations for improvement of an otherwise super meal would be, bread rolls and inclusion of vegetables or salad to make the main course a complete meal without paying for additional extras - chips, salad, etc.
Great service, but food was so disappointing, and not worth the money. Also no time between courses. We really thought the food would be really good, and full of flavour, but it was very run of the meal/average pub grub.
It's so good to get fish on the bone! I had sea-bass (a large "steak" not a feeble fillet) - which was perfectly cooked. Scallops to start and delicious chocolate mousse as a pud. Perfect. Service and ambience excellent. This was the third time I've been in as many months... If I lived closer I'd be there much more often.
Lovely people helping but a very long wait for a very average dinner
So pleased we found this great pub and restaurant. We are lucky enough to have a house at Maiden Newton so only 10 minute drive away. Good dog walking area so mutt walk and Sunday lunch is in the planning stages. Great night.
Very nice evening. Made to feel special on my birthday.
Excellent original food, full of flavour.
We sat in the conservatory, very comfortable. Service was a bit slow due to staff shortages but friendly and positive. I certainly recommend the Fox
Charming, bucolic pub serving delicious food by friendly, lively and knowledgeable staff. The menu is varied and should widely appeal. Freshest fish and ingredients. Would definitely go out of my way to return. Memorable.
The food was very good. My only criticism is that the threesome starter came in a dish with three compartments and every time I tried to cut something with my knife and fork the whole thing tipped over!
Menu did not appeal to either of us , lighting too low to risk the whole bass, so had the fish fingers , mushy peas were good as was soda bread, Beetroot soup was tasteless needed cream not so much horse radish grated on top, not keen on black pudding that was in several offerings, charging separately for veg and service charge added is unreasonable
Very mediocre, over priced and average. I had Marks trio to start which was served in a silver three part scallop dish, this was fine except for the acidic fish element which reacted with the dish leaving a silver polish aftertaste in my mouth. The bacon joint main was pretty average and really didn’t show much skill at all. The Acorn up the road is better.
Very helpful waiters who new what was on the menu and the ingredients of each item
This is the second time we’ve eaten at The Fox. The food was outstanding. Great menu , quite unusual which was nice . A perfect lunch.
Lovely vegetarian food but small portions need sides with order.
Delicious puds and welcoming friendly staff
Certainly Different sort of menu from usual gourmet pub food - we all enjoyed our choices. Really delicious food - on the pricey side for us - but worth it. Had a lovely evening.
Lovely old pub, friendly atmosphere, great food - steak delicious
Very much a pub ambience - we were seated at a table right in front of the bar with the main door beside us, so there was a great deal of foot traffic past our table. That said, the service was outstanding and friendly from all the staff. We had lamb sweetbreads with lobster and Scottish chanterelles in a delicious sauce - unusual flavours and spectacularly tasty - and a sirloin steak that was perhaps slightly more rare than requested, but very good, along with Foxy chips (like potato dauphinoise). We both enjoyed the scallops we had to begin. Food is pricey but worth it and the Italian white wine I had was good value.
The staff were really helpful and friendly. Finn was excellent! The food was very good, though I feel at that price bread should have been served with it. Also if meals needed potatoes they should have been part of the dish rather than at an extra charge even if it meant putting the price up. Overall good experience but the above issues may sway us not to come back when selecting where to eat out next time.
First class food, service and location. Expensive but this kind of quality does not come cheap. We will be back!
We had a really lovely stay here.
The staff were so friendly from the moment we arrived and we had a couple of drinks before going to our room to drop our bags.
Dinner was in the delightfully decorated Garden room and was delicious, as was the bespoke breakfast in the morning.
The room itself is incredibly comfortable and well appointed. The huge shower was particularly nice. I could’ve stayed in there for hours!
All in all a really lovely experience that I’m sure we’ll do again.
Couldn’t fault it.
We came back after an amazing dinner last time. This tiles the steak and foxy chips was again wonderful, but the service was a bit iffy - we had to remind the staff about condiments and salads arrived undressed - and one of our puddings was ok but a bit basic. I’d still recommend The Fox though. Lovely location enthusiastic staff and great food in general
Great food, efficient and friendly staff. We went twice within a week.
This was the second visit for lunch, the team were welcoming and friendly. We went for the venison curry which was ok but not quite as tasty as hoped for. Also the marrow and chilli dip was rather bland. I will return because I love the ambience, and the food quality and service are exceptional, but I will choose a different dish next time. Well done, this is a brilliant venture and I really hope you continue to be successful.
Quite simply some of the best food in Dorset lovingly served by a majestic Maitre d'hote
Lovely pub in a pretty village location.
Service was good, food was delicious.
We will be back.
Fantastic staff, so friendly and welcoming also had a good knowledge of the food and menu. Would definitely come again and was worth the long drive from home to get there.
Great service in lovely setting. Food presentation & quality was outstanding - all four of us (kids and adults) can’t wait to return.
Good food, pleasant atmosphere nothing was too much trouble
Food ok but overpriced. Added service charge even though it was optional. Wanted to know why I queried it. I had to remind them “optional” service charge written on menu. Need to offer the service and the menu to automatically get anything like that
Food and service excellent, Mark Hix is a brilliant chef and takes time to speak to his diners. Would recommend dining inside the pub as loud potty mouthed locals spoilt the outdoor experience.
Single Pringle out for lunch …….
All I can say is WOW! Warm welcome, fantastic “tapas” oysters, scallops, salmon, courgette, focaccia ( yes all on my own ) when leaving I realised m, all is well with the world.
Back very soon.
Very good sunday lunch but at £40 per head was expensive for a country pub
Great to see so many local and interesting ingredients on the menu. Courgette flowers were amazing start to delicious meal.
Staff really knew about the dishes and could make recommendations (tomatoes with bacon chop, no need for mash as came with the rabbit).
Garden room (for London foodie visitors) seemed separate from the pub ambiance at the front but was a wonderful evening and can wholeheartedly recommend.
