The Hourly Oyster House
Did the Dine Out Boston 3 course option and really enjoyed it. Waiter gave us oyster suggestions and they were very enjoyed. Will definitely be going back.
We had a very nice time. The food was great and it’s a great venue.
While our server did not ask about the sesame allergy which I think I posted when I made the reservation - he was quite attentive about the allergy.
Everyone enjoyed the meal!
Service was terrible
Nice atmosphere, attentive service. The clam chowder soup is really good! I found it a bit expensive, but it is probably average for Cambridge.
Eh. It was ok.
Excellent selection of seafood beyond Oysters; enjoyed the Chili Lobster and Seafood Paella. Chowder and Bisque and Calamari were also excellent.
Good food. Good service. But ... Overpowering noise. SoundPrint app registered 90 decibels. Was near impossible to have a conversation. Will not go back.
Excellent restaurant. Nice atmosphere, interesting menu (mostly seafood of course), and excellent service.
Everything was decent, I would still recommend the Hourly to a friend. But on this visit the service was very poor on the part of the server. The menu was updated at some point and she gave us the wrong information on some of the changes which affected some of our orders. She was also not attentive.
Helpful, attentive, pleasant staff. Absolutely luscious food - First the oysters, of course: Holbrooks, Spear points, Island Creeks (all of which they get directly for the freshest experience); Both of the sauces (red and mignonette) complemented the bivalves with just-right spice and acidity). Our server recommended a lovely Italian white which complemented the oysters nicely. Then the Brussel Sprout app., then the meaty, fragrant, and delicious trout (we’re often disappointed elsewhere by bland and uninteresting trout - Hourly proves that it’s not the fish’s fault). One of the staff pointed out that Hourly is getting great steaks as well, but we filled up on their seafood, so we’ll have to try that next time. We finished by indulging in a fluffy dessert with a dram of Balvenie Caribbean- We had a lovely experience - Highly recommended for anyone looking for a top notch and high-value dining experience in or near The Square.
Wonderful food and service! I would highly recommend to anyone looking for fresh local seafood prepared in a unique and delicious way. I will definitely be dining here again soon!
Food was mediocre. We were a party of 6. Three of us ordered the tuna BLT sandwich, very little flavor, the salad side was just greens and light oil, the fries were extremely greasy and still no flavor. One person ordered fish and chips and reported they were greasy and lacked flavor. The other two in our party order Caesar salads, one with chicken and one without. They were both very dressed but both required an ample amount of salt and pepper to bring out some flavor.
We started the meal with oysters and deviled eggs. They were okay but would not drive us to return to Hourly.
Our waitress was lovely and provided as much help as was possible.
GREAT food, mostly fish but with choices, for red meat fans and even vegans. Oysters on the half she'll were as fresh as we've had in Wellfleet harbor right from the oyster farm. Service was outstanding and warm and friendly. We'll be back often, now that we've discovered it.
Had a pre show dinner and it was spot-on, fats enough, good. Oysters and excellent fish & chips.
Great atmosphere at both the bar and our table. Tuna BLT was all that and then some. Mixing in delacata squash with he brussel sprouts was a great add. We’ll be back
Oysters good. Drinks fine. Other food bad.
It's a good thing to have a fish-centric establishment in Harvard Square, which otherwise is becoming a very crowded land of countless burger joints. The Hourly Oyster House (have we seen an explanation for that name?) inhabits a space that's changed hands rather frequently, but appears to have some staying power, and deservedly. Yes, the oysters are a bit over-priced, but the staff is knowledgeable and courteous and the space has recovered nicely from its ice creamery origins. Yes, their music is a bit awful, and there are those dreadful high tables and stools (who started that abomination?) but it ain't that loud and there are normal tables and seats, as well as the currently de rigueur gender-less restroom....
Surprisingly great dinner experience on Valentine's Day. No expensive special menu (which is often the case on V-Day), service and food was great (had the seafood paella), and service was personable and attentive. You wouldn't know you were anywhere near Boston where the opposite is too often the case.
An favorite anytime I am visiting Cambridge, Mass.
Great service. Food was amazing. Well priced considering it is in Harvard Square.
I generally check TripAdvisor out before reserving a table at a restaurant I have not tried. I did not take the time to do that for The Hourly Oyster House, because my family was attending a play within walking distance, and we wanted to be parked and ready to go from dinner to the play.
It is a very good restaurant!
It features an excellent raw bar, with some outstanding, creative "composed" oysters. Their chowder is also excellent, and is a bit different from the usual, good-quality New England clam chowder in that it risks hints of unexpected spices to great effect and is accompanied by tiny, crunchy, house-made saltines. The tuna poke was equally successful - fresh, flavorful and reasonably generous.
For mains, my wife had a tuna BLT that she pronounced very good, though she did not love their aoili. That is a matter of individual taste, of course. She eliminated some of the toast with the offending mayo (she might have reduced the bread footprint anyway!), and enjoyed it. I had the pan roasted chili lobster - a split lobster with claw meat unshelled served in a broth with chili oil and topped with bok chow. This was a revelation! At the same time decadent and healthy, with no carbs. It was so good that if I were a local and became a regular, I would have a hard time fulfilling my obligation as a foodie to try other menu items!
We do not generally indulge in dessert, but it was a special night (our 15 year old singer/actor son was about to meet his idol, Ben Platt, who - not surprisingly - turned out to be as gracious and warm as he is talented) and I had skipped the carbs, s0...I had the panna cotta topped with mango ice. It was worth every calorie!
Great spot with great food and atmosphere.
Exceptionally thoughtful about allergies. My friend is allergic to shellfish but not to other seafood. The staff talked deeply with the chefs about where there might be cross-contamination, and were able to recommend dishes that would be 100% safe.
Loved everything about it!
Please don’t stop making the bronzino as is!!
The restaurant is lovely though be forewarned the street doesn’t have a sign and restaurant sign is easy to miss!
Service was too notch and my guest had superb salmon over pasta. I had the special fish tacos and they were disappointing...they hardly had any fish so at $14 way over priced and not up to the rest of the experience.
I prefer their dinner. Not enough variety on their brunch menu. Also the chef was not very accommodating.
Loved the ambiance and decor. Service was good. Food excellent and priced comparably with other seafood establishments. Will definitely be a repeat customer.
It felt like we were in a club. The music was far to loud and overall ambiance was a bit overwhelming. The staff was at tentative and kind, the food was pretty good as well.
This is my go-to lunch place in Harvard Square! When you go and get the option of 'fries' or a 'salad', go with 'half-and-half'!
Enjoyable dinner with a good bit of variety on the menu. We were able to find dishes that allowed us to stick as close as possible to the Whole30 diet we were on at the time. Further, very convenient to get to along the Red Line. Service was outstanding with the right amount of checking in vs being a bit over bearing.
We had Lauren as our server. She was prompt, knowledgeable and gave us space when it came to us enjoying our dinner.
New year’s eve!
We had a great meal and great service though both my fiancé and I found the music choice on New Year’s Eve to bit a bit too “strip club/techno” for our taste. It made it hard to relax and enjoy the time. We couldn’t wait to get out of there and were disappointed since we were looking forward to having a fun night and lingering over a few drinks. Perhaps the music was intended to help them turn tables more quickly on a busy night?? 🤷🏻♀️
Awesome food and service!
Excellent food. Service was very timely and polite.
We dined at the Hourly for my husband’s 63rd birthday. Our waiter was wonderful: helpful, prompt, accurate, friendly & knowledgeable. The seafood was outstanding. Three of us had the Libster Bolognese, one had scallops, and one had the Lobster with chili . The flavors enhanced the seafood and the cocktails and the entire experience was delightful. Thanks so much!
Getting our entrees took an hour, which seems too long. The oysters (first course) were great, and the reason I chose the spot. A friend across the table couldn't hear us most of the time; a Pats game was on, for one thing. I'd asked for a quiet table, so I didn't want to be so near the bar. I didn't realize that it would be so noisy until a touchdown.
Pleasant server. Tasty food. Reasonable prices. We had a good time.
Our waitress was a bit formal and quiet, but very polite and exceptionally effective. The food was excellent. We received some 'homemade' chips to much on, that were very good. I had the clam chowder with special crackers - hot and extremely yummy! My husband had the scallops, which he would have again! I had the salmon, which came with a potato 'square' and asparagus and mustard. Also hot and great. We shared the panna cotta with mango sherbet - excellent! I had a cappuccino and my husband had tea - also very tasty.
