The Preston House & Hotel - Restaurant
Two of us dined. My meal was good by my wife's meal was not.
The chef and staff were well aware of the Coronavirus concerns. They were practicing social distancing with table seating, and very accommodating. The is the single best restaurant within 15 miles in any direction. I truly hope they will weather the Coronavirus storm and survive the likely lack of customers over the next couple of months. I will be back soon, even if for take-out !!!!
great vibes, great food, and lovely service! we will definitely be back when we're in the area!
Good food and wine but certainly not worth the high cost of bill. Hostess was nice to set us up in downstairs room that was spacious for our group of 8. However, the ambience and server lacked character and warmth.
Thoughtfully sourced and prepared seafood. Attentive waitstaff. Excellent and will return when in the area.
Great food but ridiculously overpriced!
$180 per couple with no drinks at all and no dessert either. That’s crazy
Hi Jonis! We are sorry to hear you thought your experience with us was overpriced. Please keep in mind we do our best to run special nights such as $15 Burger and a Beer Wednesdays and buck a shuck oysters for $1 on Thursday nights! We also have a prix fix every night that we are open during the off season from 5-6pm as well as happy hour during the week from 4-6pm. Hopefully you can visit us for one of these nights!
Chef Koenig is amazing. His duck breast was seasoned and cooked to perfection! A real gem in Riverhead.
Great food and service. I'll be back.
Food was great. Waitress seemed irritated to be serving us.
Hello datenight! Thank you so much for your review! We are very sorry to hear of your server the night you came to visit us. We hope that we can make it up to you. When you come in to see us again, please ask for Jennifer or Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special!
The beet appetizer and the scallop main were both perfectly done
The service was very very good
Comfortable for a nice dinner with my husband, family or friends
The stars tell it all. Our server, Jacob, was competent. And patient as my wife questioned him extensively about specific dishes as she has some dietary issues. He knew mostly everything and happily went back to the chef if there was something he didn’t know. An overall pleasant eating experience.
Great setting. Friendly staff. Excellent food.
The oysters, truffled pasta and pear fritters are haunting me...must have them again!!!!🙌
Another incredible night at Preston house. This was our second visit and the food was just as outstanding. But it's not even just the food. Everybody in the restaurant from the bus boys to the bartenders to the wait staff to the incredible chef and maitre d are the nicest, most professional, caring staff around. The food is so simple but the delicacy of its preparation is what makes the meal so special. We got the beef carpaccio for an appetizer. Then I enjoyed the wagu beef flat iron and my husband had the short ribbon lobster with the dirty oyster martini which they made special for him. Can't wait for our next meal here. Highly highly recommend.
We went for Valentine’s Day and the experience was ok. The service was good but slow. The food was ok. Overall experience was pleasant but we expected more.
Although the waitress was super nice, the food service was terrible. We arrived at 8:15 for an 8:30 reservation and grabbed a drink at the bar. We were seated at 8:25 on time and waited about 10 minutes to see the server. She took our order the first time we spoke to her. It was a pre fix for the holiday so there were only 4 choices. At 9:30, 55 minutes later we still had not received our appetizer. I spoke to the manager who offered us a free glass of
Wine for waiting. We finally left at 10:45, 2 hours and 15 minutes later and only at that time because we took our dessert go to (we had to get home to our sitter). 2 other couples got up and left while we were there. It’s a shame because we have heard great things about this place. Instead we got mediocre food that took a long time to come. I felt bad for the server because i believe it was beyond her control.
HI Keith, We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special.
This was our second visit and the occasion was Valentines Day. While the service was amicable it was also a bit frenetic particularly as related to food delivery. We chose the prix fixe dinner at $95 which was a bit overpriced. That said most items we had were very good to outstanding including the tuna tartare, the squid ink pasta, and of course the duck, which was a standout on our previous visit. The latter was expertly prepared and seasoned—- a true standout. The day scallops were tasty, but just slightly overcooked, which detracted from their otherwise fine seasoning and quality. The one disappointment was the linguine with clams, which was not actually linguine but a broader pasta. Unfortunately the clams were rather tough and few in number and the dish lacked pop and was a bit dry. The dessert selection was a standout—-a really tasty flan, delicious apple fritters and Sweet chocolate covered strawberries really completed a very nice meal, as evidenced by the fact we both ate the whole thing even though we didn’t think we could after a very full menu. We will go back and recommend that those who enjoy fine dining in a semi casual atmosphere sample the fare at Prestons—-it’s definitely worth a trip!!
we have dined here numerous times since they opened. this visit we were here for a birthday dinner, which i stated in my reservation. this, however, was not acknowledged by anyone - disappointing. we started with the winter lettuce salad and the agnolotti pasta app, both of which was incredibly delicious!!! hubby had the strip loin steak for his entree and ordered it medium rare. it was served medium well, therefore, it was dry and a tad tough. my entree was the tilefish, which was good but nothing outstanding or exceptional. apparently there was a pasta/crab entree special, however, our initial waitress didn't mention it to us. quite unfortunate, as i would have definitely ordered that :-( !! this visit was a little disappointing - nothing terrible, but not as great as it should/could have been.
Hello waterside, thank you so much for your review. We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special.
The Preston House definitely has potential. Great menu and a charming environment. However, the prices ($15-17 for drinks and starters $18-24) are way too high for Riverhead. The service was truly terrible - Drinks took forever and the dirty martinis came out dark green and were pure olive juice and no spirits in them. Food portions were smallish and the al a carte nature of the sides really jacked up the price. We eat at pricey places all the time, but you can usually justify the price. Not at the Preston House....
Hi Daniel, We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special.
Not pleased at all overpriced food ... was very dull and good was not hot and late coming out ... desert was a joke ... how is this place too 100 restaurant?? False advertising ... spent $200 on garbage food
We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special. Please also note that we run nightly special $15 burger and a beer Wednesdays and $1 buck a shuck oysters Thursdays. We also have happy hour during the week from 4-6pm! We hope to see you soon.
Met another couple for dinner.my first experience there.
Food was outstanding!
It wasn't for us. The prices were too high for the food. I can get a better steak for less money at a restaurant we frequent. The bread was two slices for a table of two and the bus never asked if we wanted more bread. When we first were seated it took them about five minutes to find menus.
HI Susan, We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special.
The service was extremely slow...not sure why. My wife and I were left alone with not even an I'm sorry for the delay. We were told about the specials and I opted for the pork shank and she did say that it could be shared if I wanted but my wife wanted seafood. To say I was quite surprised when I got the bill and found my pork entrée was $75. Shame on me for not asking the price of that special but really, don't you think the server should have been upfront with the cost when she announced the specials??
Hello swot, We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special.
Great food. We both had Braised Short-rib and Lobster over risotto. Fantastic.
The local wines, on tap, were a nice surprise and the Rose was really, really good.
Desert was awesome. Apple cobbler with ice cream. Nice size and perfect for two people to share without over indulging.
Jennifer greeted us as we entered and our waiter, Jacob was very respectful of all our wishes. Everyone we encountered seemed to have a smile.
Sadly we have crossed one of our favorite restaurants off our list. Food and service has always been great here but portion size was generally problematic. Little by little we arrived at tonight when 2 approximately 1/4 inch thick slices of very delicious bread arrived in a basket meant for a much larger portion with a portion of butter equally tiny. However we may have been able to overlook this had it not been for the $35 special of 'hand-rolled fusilli with King Crab' that my husband ordered; king crab being one of his favorite things. There was one small cube of crab meat that was mushy and 2 small fragments that were mixed in with the pasta. The description of the size as an entree was ambitious as the size of the dish in general was more that of an appetizer. Sad to say goodbye.
HI Caroline, We are so sorry to hear that your dining experience with us wasn't up to par. We would love to invite you back- please ask for Jennifer and Alberto and we will make your dining experience very special.
First time at the Preston and it was fabulous. Will definitely be back!!!
Jacob or server was terrific. Food presentation and flavors were wonderful. Fluke crudo a real hit, as well as the steaks. Sides were easily for two. And try the cocktail menu. I can't remember the name but the one with rum, port, black tea and milk is a good as it sounds strange. Tooo good!
January 2020 Restaurant Week. Went back twice during this Restaurant Week! Again food was great! This is the best way to experience restaurants that you would not normally go to or new ones offering outstanding menus! I recommend going here to taste an overall array of upscale eating! It has a modern and sleek environment and a non rushed atmosphere. Delicious!
My wife and I ate there on a Saturday night, before a show at the Suffolk theatre. It was restaurant week so we were able to take advantage of cheaper prices for the fabulous food we had. We started with the risotto. I had the chicken and my wife chose the scallops. Also had a liter of wine for a very reasonable price. Great desert also.
The noise level was excessive but other than that, exceptional food!!!
I would recommend the Preston House. It is a quaint and delicious dinner, and the drink selection is very nice. However, bring your patience and allow for extra time. We visited for restaurant week, and while you would think a dinner with price fixed menu would allow for quick table turnover, we were there for 3 hours. It was 20 minutes after we were seated before anyone came to get our drink order. It took another 30 for some of the drinks to show up to the table and at that point, no one had been around for our dinner order either. We asked for the bread, finally, that came with one slice per person, which would have been fine, if I knew my dinner order was even on it's way out. When it finally did arrive, the food was very delicious! Even though it was a long night, great conversation among friends, and wonderful food made for a pleasant night.
This was my second time dining at the Preston House. Once again, I was impressed by the expert, well-informed service (I had the same waitress both times), the kitchen (under two different chefs), the modern, chic décor, and the moderate noise level. Special kudos go for the well-lit, airy interior. The Preston House is going to need a bigger parking lot.
Just had a great visit to the Preston House. The food was really good, the service was great! I will definitely be back!
We visited The Preston House for the first time for LI Restaurant Week.
They had a good variety of selections to pick from as well as their regular menu.
They substituted a gluten free penne for the pasta with duck bolognese and it was delicious!
The service was great. We will definitely go back!
Sometimes there is a jewel hiding right around the corner. We’ve watched this local spot being built, but never got around to visiting....enter “the restaurant week search”. A hotel/restaurant combo nicely designed with ample parking. Reservation time was honored and we were seated in the smallish, but lovely dining room. Starters were creative and delicious: fluke and radish salad with lime....crisp, clean taste with lime finish and the foie gras worth writing home about. They were sadly out of the scallops, but the duck linguini in a mushroom reduction was outstanding. Closing out the dinner was a hand crafted apple crisp that made my heart and pallet sing. Waitstaff attentive, but not annoyingly “in your face”. Pretty much perfect dining experience...plan on returning with friends.
Wonderful staff and menu. The restaurant is located in the hotel .Parking in back of hotel and you can walk through to the restaurant .The decor is farmhouse modern ,bathrooms very clean .We were there for restaurant week they had a great variety on the menu and an interesting cocktail menu .Everything was delicious and service was attentive. Would definitely recommend this place and eat there again.
The food was amazing. The pork belly appetizer was ridiculously delicious. The roasted chicken was delightful. Then the PH Honey something or other was perfect.
We had a wonderful time for restaurant week, we wanted to pace our pre fixe special and actually break our two two courses into four courses to enjoy- and they were so completely understanding. They went above and beyond and even split the dishes for us beforehand. The manager and chef were even out on the floor mid dinner, so you can see how well they are working together as a team. Lovely time. Food was delicious. Cocktails and mocktails were great as well.
Every dish was innovative and beyond delicious! Chef Kyle went above and beyond to make our special dinner even more special! Do yourself a favor and get the truffles on everything you can!!! The pear fritters were a PERFECT ENDING to a perfect evening!! Thank you 🙏
Great Place for a special occasion! A little expensive for just dinner. Not enough bar seating!
