Best Omakase/Kaiseiki in SF FiDi!!!
They change menus according to seasons and presentation of each dish is an art.
The food, service and ambience made our evening very enjoyable.
Oh, do the sake pairing for sure!!!
Chef Ingi (Shota) is super friendly and fun to talk to.

Consistently one of my favorite fancy omakase. Menus change regularly, and every course is a delight. All of the fish are super fresh, well seasoned. The first course is always a surprise of yumminess: an ankimo mousse choux. Everything’s incredibly flavorful and in season. The chef would tell us about what’s happening each season, where the fish was from. Even their ginger is fancy: they have young pickled ginger that is super tart and refreshing. A la carte, they also have a uni wagyu piece that’s makes me so happy. The sake pairing is also amazing and a LOT. I found splitting one to be enough. Finally their tamago is super fluffy and jiggly. Must eat!!

First time dining here thanks to watching the Eater YouTube video. Sat at the bar and was attended to by the excellent Chef Aki for the most part but the others were just as good as well. Love how they took the time to explain each dish and more importantly how to eat it! The tuna demonstration was also a wonderful learning experience for me - and those dishes were my favorites, particularly the temaki. If I would do one thing differently, I’d add the sake pairing! Overall, the best Japanese experience I’ve had in San Francisco! Will definitely come here again!

A delightful personal experience with the 3 special chefs who met at Napa Morimoto’s years ago. Artistic and substantial with special detail and exquisite presentation. Timing and cadence of omakase excellent, and the ankimo (monkfish liver) best I’ve ever had - made by chef Seth. Paired with a couple special beers - a yuzo and a rice based - perfect for the first several lighter flights. Highly recommend for seasoned and beginner omakese venturers.

Everything about the evening was perfect! Wouldn’t be able to pick at something negative even if we tried. The flawless experience started the moment we stepped into the restaurant. We want to particularly thank our chef of the evening, Chef Aki. Super personable and an overall great person to chat and be in company of. Thank you to everyone on staff who was a part of our memorable Valentine’s dinner!

Second time coming here. First time was with my parents for a few of our birthdays. Love the ambience and the chefs here. In terms of omakase restaurants definitely one of the better ones but the pricing definitely increased since the last time I was here so they are getting popular. Would definitely recommend the sake pairing and also if you have more than 2 people easier to sit on the ends so you can actually have a conversation without talking through someone.

Great food but the constant loud music from a bar next to it completely ruined the ambience. We were seated 10 minutes later than reserved time even though there were ample empty seats upon arrival. I would expect service to be impeccable for a $600 (for 2) dinner. They may also want to change the wonky orchards at the reception. For a high end omakase sushi restaurant, there seemed to be lack of attention to detail.

High End Sushi with a big problem

We were excited to try The Shota restaurant on Sansome St. because of the near perfect reviews on this platform. The price, in our case over $500., for two people , should buy a flawless dining experience.

We arrived early and the hostess, a Caucasian woman in her forties with short black hair, seated us at the sushi bar closest to the door. There was a very noisy Friday night happy hour party just down the hall and the racket of a hundred plus Corporate warriors blowing off steam was completely out of place with the calm, zen atmosphere that The Shota tries to provide. When I asked to sit farther from the door she declined although no one else was seated and told me that the door would be closed when service started.
The problem was that the restroom was outside next to the happy hour revelers (note to Shota, a high class dining experience should not require traipsing out the front door and down a long, cold hallway to use a semi public toilet).

Most of the 20 patrons in the restaurant used the restroom at least once during the fixed course meal which lasted 2-1/2 hours so there was a lot of coming and going. Each time the door was opened the happy hour din washed in disrupting the peaceful atmosphere. To make matters worse the door closer got stuck open at least 4 times and when the staff did not notice I had to climb off my stool and close the door.

My partner and I found the temperature too chilly for comfort sitting for hours.

The service, ingredients, and preparation were impeccable. The sushi chef carefully explained each dish in detail at one point using a 3 dimensional model of a tuna. The 20 courses of sushi and soup were outstanding. However we will not be back. Overall, not a good value for the money.

The food, sake and service were all impeccable! The staff were professional, yet personable and not stuffy. We were treated to Chef Ingi “Shota” Son’s good humor and a wonderful explanation of the food, the sake and even the origin of the glassware. This is worth a repeat experience again and again!

Shota was amazing for dinner + entertainment. Chef Seth gave a Tuna 101 quick course on where each cut was from. The akami was the best piece of akami I've had all year.
Everything from presentation, to service, to the sushi was impeccable.

Chef Seth and the staff have given us an amazing dining experience. The chef showed and explained every single dish that he served and more. We’ve been to several top omakase restaurants in the city and The Shota tops our top 4 all time favorites. The food was absolutely amazing and we just can’t wait to come back for more. Thank you!

If you want to make your life instantly better, go to The Shota. The food is art (and delicious), the team is incredible, and the whole operation is laudable. Since you are reading this on OpenTable, you're probably thinking "should I book, should I look around...". Honestly, just stop what you are doing and find an open time slot. While the team and chef are incredibly humble, we're all frankly lucky to be living in a world where a restaurant experience like this exists, so get to it.

Nice setting and service. The first few fish dishes were good, but flavors soon became lost in pickled mixes or other fillers. Overall the fish was a bit lacking and minimal in variety. There were some tasty decadent bites that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else probably. But my palate now lingers of aged fish and vinegar, mostly vinegar.

We also felt a bit trapped by the last minute text telling us it was chefs choice only for $175 per person (and if we cancelled we would be charged no matter what) when there was no mention of that on the Open Table app. They really need to have a clearer explanation before booking that it’s Omakase only, chefs choice. The service was excellent, but it was brought down some by what I felt were filler foods instead of a consistent sampling of top quality sushi.

Best sushi in SF. I’m from Tokyo and frequent high end sushi shops like Sugita and Amamoto... Chef Son is changing the sushi scene in SF and I’m happy to be along for the ride.

Shota is one of the best omakase sushi restaurant in SF's (only because I haven't been to them all). The fish is always the perfect temperature and texture, the rice is alive without being too hard, and the seasoning is always exactly as needed. The portions are moderately sized, but there are so many that few people will be hungry. And definitely give feedback, the chefs are always willing to adjust amounts of seasoning and wasabi.

Outstanding. The Shota is intimate and upscale with delicious food. We loved each course, but my favorites were the monaka filled with sea urchin pate, the lobster chawanmushi, the sake pairing, the additional caviar option, and the many sushi servings. Although the setting seemed formal, it really was a fun time with our sushi chef Aki, and our neighboring couple who also traveled from the East Bay just for this fabulous meal. I think of this The Shota as a Japanese version of Saison (with less food, but enough to feel satisfied) but also less expensive. This place is an impressive first date venue, or a destination for a celebration. The overall experience was memorable, and I highly recommend The Shota.
