The Tiller Restaurant at Cliff House
This was my third time to the Tiller Restaurant. To be honest, I was disappointed for a 2nd time. The menu was a bit underwhelming and quite pricey. My wife ordered lobster mac and cheese for a side, and it had so much chewy lardons in it, that it was inedible. Our server was kind enough to take it off the bill, but overall I wasn't impressed. It's too bad because the first time my wife and I had dinner here last year, we were extremely impressed by the food and service. Not sure we'll be back any time soon.
I was a returning guest at the hotel and made reservations for dinner to celebrate my daughters’s birthday. The restaurant was virtually empty but they refused to sit us at a table for four along the windows due to a prior reservation supposedly. The people arrived over an hour later and it was a party of two at which time there were other tables for two along the windows. Our waitress was quite possibly the worst ever. She didn’t tell us the specials of the evening and refused to take our empty plates unless we asked 3 times. Very disappointing and fell way short of a fine dining experience.
This is our 2nd visit and it was more disappointing than the first. If this restaurant wasn’t in the hotel with its stunning views, it would be closed. The food and service are so poor it really is best to go offsite for dining, which is unfortunate.
We had dinner in celebration for my son’s birthday and our wedding anniversary. We started off with two cocktails that were different but tasted remarkably the same since they were made with so much sour mix. Then the rolls came out and since they were covered in a napkin gave the illusion they would be warm. Not a chance! Ice cold and stale. Even my kids didn’t eat them, which was a first.
My son’s kids meal steak said it came with broccolini but it was broccoli rabe instead. My other son’s Mac and cheese was not tasty and said it came with fruit, but French fries showed up instead (to his delight and my disappointment). My lobster chowder was tasty with the exception of the under cooked potatoes, but the beet salad had so much vinegar it was inedible. My husbands pork chop was the best despite it being grossly overcooked.
We took 2 desserts back to our room...and over-priced Mini Whoopi pie that we had to assemble and a way-too-fudge chocolate torte.
The service was better this time than the last but honestly the wait staff seem constantly confused and disappear for long periods of time.
We will likely stay at the hotel in the future but dine offsite...
Top notch food
What can you ask more ?
The hotel itself is almost perfect! It's probably the best hotel I've been in USA. Now, the "The Tiller" restaurant requires a lot of improvements. It charges at the "first class" level, but the food quality is below par. We ordered a steak and 2 pork chops. The steak was ordered "medium rare" and it came "well done". The chops were both overcooked and dry. We also ordered a 2 lbs lobster. No bib and cracker were provided before requested. The lobster was not clean and part of its digestive organs were still there... Really? We also asked for "cod tots" (or something like that) as appetizer, but the cod as not there! Just a deep-fried dough ...
We were in a party of 5 and we all regretted having dinner at "The Tiller". We wish we had eaten at the "Lobster Shack" instead since our experience there earlier in the day was just superb!
"The Tiller" Chef needs to learn a thing or two with the "Lobster Shack" Chef.
Now, we also had breakfast at "The Tiller" (a risk since our experience the previous night was almost a nightmare) and Nathan was our waiter. WoW!!! What a different in service and food quality!!! That was at the level I expect a restaurant like "The Tiller" to be! Nathan was just a gentleman and had our order all correct, promptly, and with a nice demeanor and smile in his face! (Yes, I forgot to mention, the dinner waiter the night before was rude and seemed to be upset, probably with the manager because that one was also really rude).
I will definitely return to the Cliff House, but I have a plan: have dinner at the "Lobster Shack" and breakfast at "The Tiller". That will probably make me very, very, very happy!!!
Quality of the food was not in line with fine dining.
Service was regrettable. The girl had no experience. If you are going to charge 100 a head then you need top end service. She was either absent, wrong or argumentative. How hard is it to get a steak to accompany your lobster? The prices are sky high and yet you leave feeling cheated. Great views and nice effort to duplicate Gurney’s in Montauk but without the service or crowd.
Thank you for your hospitality and making us feel welcome and spend quality time together!
The view is amazing nestled on the side of the cliff with a view of the ocean. The service is top notch. We had the cheese board to start and then I had the steak special and my husband had the scallops. We were very impressed with both of our meals. Great wine and drink menu.
Went for a birthday celebration, which restaurant knew ahead of time. Were a party of five but taken to a table set for four and then had to stand in middle of restaurant floor while they reset table to add place setting and chair. Meal took 2 1/2 hours despite only being three courses and having school aged children. Service very slow. Soup served with no spoon, water not refilled. Attention to detail just not there and for the price would not return despite the fact that the food itself was excellent.
Although a Lovely Restaurant, thoughtfully designed, beautiful views and overall decent food...the Service fell far below even a standard restaurant.
With Servers leaving you waiting for very long prolonged periods of time before checking in, taking orders, seeing if anything thing is needed etc.
It was so underwhelming, each time thinking the service would be better and the previous was just “an off day”. No, in fact that is the way the restaurant is run... not assuring there servers require a higher expectation level on the important of service and attentiveness.
Poor, poor quality of service - each time.
The service was very good, food was excellent. It was very quiet, but I was there in a Wednesday at 5:30 in November. I would recommend it, but I am not rushing back because it is way out of my price range. It is definitely for a special occasion, I was there for an anniversary
Food was just so-so. Service was poor. It was very slow and we never received drink my husband ordered. View was outstanding, however.
We were disappointed by this restaurant. We will never come back.
We are always excited to come to the Cliff House, whether for a meal or drinks. Service and food are always excellent and the kitchen handles celiac needs every time!
What a lovely dinner we had! The presentation of the food was excellent and the entrees were delicious. The waitress did not rush us and was very attentive. Will done here again!
The staff was super and the food was amazing. We went for brunch on a Saturday. Our waiter was friendly, funny, happy and helpful. The food was excellent: the lobster roll, the lobster poutine, seafood cobb salad and everything else we ordered certainly met the standard that you would expect for this amazing place. Of course, a table by the window overlooking the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean was the crowning touch! Highly recommended!
Initially, I was worried as though I made a reservation for 12:15 at an Ocean view table as it was my Mom's 90th birthday, I was told when we arrived that Tillers does not take reservations. Thankfully, we only had to wait 15 minutes for a perfect table.
Our server was excellent. She had the chef make an egg free dessert. My Mom loved it.
The food was excellent. I had the Seafood Cobb Salad. Generous amount of scallops, shrimp and salmon.
My mother and husband had Lobster Poutine. They said it was delicious.
I highly recommend Tillers. It is pricey but well worth it. The views are breathtaking and the food delicious
It is a nice setting. It should be tried at least once!!
Second time we have dined at The Tiller. The Greek Meatballs starter is a favorite. I had the Salmon on the Grain medley. The salmon was cooked perfectly although a tad salty. My husband ordered the scallops and enjoyed them very much. We were seated at the windows with a beautiful view of the ocean! A treat we hope to enjoy next October when we return!
Cannot. Eat the view. Food was average and not worth the price .
We were very disappointed. We reserved a window table a month in advance and were told there wasn’t one available unless we wanted to wait. We did not. Service was terrible. We were not brought bread, had to wait for everything and server barely spoke to us. Food was ok but all served Luke warm at best. Truffle fries raw and cool. We had hoped to end our meal on a “ sweet “ taste in our month but our creme brûlée was burnt in the middle. It was our last night on vacation and again, very disappointed. Room was beautiful, view incredible, dinner...not so much
To start the evening we pulled up in front of the hotel and waited for a good 4 minutes for a valet. My friend got out of the car and asked a young man standing there if he was the valet and he said yes What can I do for you? Ahhh park the car. We were then seated to a high top table that was not comfortable. I got up and asked the hostess if we could change seats. She said yes and never led us to another table. So we just picked one. We waited a good 10 minutes for the waiter to come. He asked if we wanted bottled water or tap. My friend said tap, I said I was all set. He came back with a carafe of tap water left it on the table and then took my water glass away. When he came back I asked if I could have my glass back just in case I wanted water, he looked annoyed. We got the beet salad which was good, not great. My friend had the hanger steak which she said was ok, but for the price was not worth it. I ordered the mussels and truffle fries. The mussels had no flavor what so ever and had pieces of grey sausage. I ate just half of the order. I did not taste one bit of truffles in the fries. When the waiter came back at the end of the meal I told him that I did not care for the mussels at all. He never asked what the problem was, actually didn't make any comment at all just took the bowl.
I have been to the Cliff house numerous times and enjoyed it. After Saturday's night experience I won't be going back anytime soon. For a high end hotel and restaurant the Cliff House fell very short.
We were driving up Rte 1 and decided to stop in for lunch. Our server, Sean was great and made some helpful suggestions. The view was breathtaking!
Over priced for a lunch. Food was good and taste though the quantity of crab on the dish was lacking
Our server was less than stellar. The food was just okay. My chicken dish was delicious, but my husband’s meat board was not very good. Even if we wanted to complain or ask for something different, our server never asked if everything was okay. We never had our water refilled or offered another drink. The restaurant was not busy, we were one of four tables seated. We have been there quite a few times and we have always enjoyed our meals. Hopefully this was just a single instance.
Our window table was exceptional! The views were amazing and the food was great! Would recommend and will return again!
For a Sunday brunch at 2:00 PM, the menu selections were minimal. I would recommend a different day of the week when a lunch menu is offered.
The service attention, meal and ambiance all match the amazing views from the Cliff House perched on the edge of the Atlantic.
Spectacular is the only word to describe the entire property and the view from the restaurant. As you look out on the rocky coast and crashing waves, you can see forever on the horizon. The food was very good and my dining companion declared her lobster roll one of the best she had ever had.
We are staying four nights at the Cliff House and decided to try their restaurant for the first night. The view is priceless, overlooking the cliffs and ocean, ambiance cannot be beat! The food was well prepared and our service was excellent. The only feedback I'd provide is the cost. It felt a bit pricey for what you get....significantly more expensive v. local restaurants. I guess you need to factor in the priceless view...
Overall a very good meal.
Overall great experience. Wonderful setting. Great food, great service. We’ll be back.
Food was fantastic! Cornmeal beignets were delicious and the boiled lobster was sweet. Our waitress Sarah was lovely and the view is a million dollar view. All in all a fabulous experience!
Our waitress was friendly and enthusiastic about the food. Atmosphere was lovely and the drinks were great. The food however was a HUGE disappointment, it was bland and over cooked. The bread was stale, artichokes had no seasoning and were over sauced. The scallops and rice had no flavor. The steak was over cooked and the potatoes were cold. The dessert was like a brick and tasteless..... The nail in the coffin was the $300 bill. Go for the drinks and atmosphere, skip the food.
The view is what's built into the price. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back when there are so many excellent restsurants in the area on the water.
Great views and service was wonderful, and good food!
Beautiful location, incredible view, attentive service, delicious food. We are vegetarians and loved the mushroom toast and gnocchi with extra peas.
An incredible view of the ocean and cliffs of this beautiful spot! We stayed at the hotel in which Tillers is located (highly recommend) for a long weekend. We chose to eat our dinners outside the hotel to enjoy the area. We had Sunday brunch at Tillers and it was delicious! The room is unmatched. Service was very good. There was no loud music to disturb the ambience. We highly recommend Tillers and Cliff House Hotel to all!
In my reservation, made many weeks in advance, I stated that my wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and requested a table by the window. I realize that not all such requests can be accommodated, but it was worth asking given that this was a Saturday evening in late September. However, when we arrived for our reservation, the hostess made no mention of my request and seated us in the middle of the restaurant. No one said anything about our seating request. I would have at least expected "I'm sorry we weren't able to accomodate your seating request." The waitress came over and wished us a happy anniversary, so they obviously got the text of the request. We ordered and got our food but I was really bothered by the lack of courtesy. When the waitress finally asked what was wrong and we explained, she went and spoke to her manager, who reported THAT WE WERE OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO WAIT FOR A SEAT BY THE WINDOW TO OPEN UP AND THAT WE HAD DECLINED!!! What? Absolutely not. No mention of my request was ever made when we were seated. The waitress offered to have her manager come over and speak to us. I asked "You mean the person who just lied about giving us a choice of seating? No I don't think you better do that." The waitress was very nice and her service was good, but there was no making up for the clueless hostess and the malicious manager. We had stayed at the Cliff House that evening and even booked a spa appointment during our stay which was very good. The Tiller menu selection seems to get smaller every year and after this ridiculous customer experience, we'll be taking our anniversary celebrations elsewhere from now on. Cliff House is way more expensive than any other resort in New England, and they treat you as if they could care less about your patronage.
