The staff are very attentive, the food is delicious and presented well. a bit on the pricey side but well worth it.
Always a favorite place to go. Especially during the pandemic. The outside tables are comfortably placed.
The food is absolutely over the top delicious. The smoked trout is one of my favorites.
Extraordinary apps and drinks with mixed service and ordinary entrees
The good news in this time of COVID is that The Vault Garden is open, serves yummy apps and drinks, and is outdoors-ish. The Parker House Rolls, Minestrone, Squash Salad, and Stone Fruit Burrata were all extraordinary. The Smoked Trout and Cast-Iron Seared Dry-Aged Beef were good...but not great.
On the drinks side, I very much loved my Zocalo (light on the agave), my wife her Lay It On Me, and my daughter her Kombucha. But despite my wife's request for a drink on the less sweet side, her first one - the waiter's recommendation of a Lost in Bora Bora - proved *way* too sweet.
Which leads us into the mixed service experience. Not only did the waiter apparently have no idea about the Lost in Bora Bora he also couldn't tell us what the minestrone soup tasted like. It was extraordinary - kind of a deconstructed soup with a tomato base poured over fresh veg - but at this price point the waiter should know the menu.
Worse, our drinks arrived after we had finished our apps. In some sense not our waiter's fault...but when he dropped them off he should have said something along the lines of, "I'm sorry, the bar is very backed up tonight...would you like to order a second round now?" Instead he disappeared, and by the time we could flag him down and order that second round the drinks ended up arriving at our table as we were finishing up dinner.
To get back to the menu, the apps were for the most part amazing but the entrees were limited in selection (one each of Branzino, scallops, pork, or beef) and constrained by a 'simple protein plus carb plus veg' formula. We had intended to order a pasta but we learned upon arrival that the wonderful sounding braised beef, foraged mushroom, and horseradish concoction we anticipated had been replaced by pork and beans. C'est la vie.
All in all, we would certainly return given the option but now understand we have to better manage our waiter and expectations.
The food and service were both average. We had apps brought to our table we didn't order twice and had to ask for drink refills several times. The outside patio was nice and they were thoughtful in giving a card to our guest celebrating a birthday.
The menu is very interesting, definitely something for everyone.
Very fresh food and great presentation!
Great service and perfect for a date night or birthday
The food was very good, great cocktails and wine choices, and the service was just amazing!
The food was pretty good but the time it took to get it/drinks was a bit delayed, which we understood was due to covid. I did call ahead and order my friend’s bday dessert, which the waitress said she didn’t get and asked what it was in front of the bday boy. It just made it a bit less special. I’d say, better communication and managing expectations on timing would go a long way! Love this restaurant though and can’t wait for the real one to open!
Requires order all at once.. weird
Excellent staff. I appreciate the accomodation
The Vault was a real disappointment and I'm surprised by all of the great reviews. For an extremely overpriced meal, we were served very mediocre appetizers and neither of our entrees had an ounce of seasoning. The pork chop was a piece of dry, unseasoned meat with no sauce on a plate with unseasoned polenta and broccoli. It straight up resembled cafeteria food.
On top of that we felt very rushed by our server and the staff in general. Our server wouldn't put our appetizers in until we ordered entrees? Our server also didn't check on us after we got our entrees and a food runner cleared our dinner plates so my boyfriend didn't even get a chance to say something about the pork chop and order something different or get a sauce to go with it to make it edible.
Hands down one of the worst dining experiences I have had in the city and I wouldn't have been so mad if it wasn't for our $240 bill for two...
Great food and service! Staff attentive and kind. We enjoyed the summer flavors incorporated into the food. Wonderful!
Portions are small and majority of our dishes were too salty. Worst was when we saw a charge for propane.
Brunch = 1 1/2 hour wait for food
Rude service, hair in food
Really a shame because the food was great.
Added a 20% service charge without letting anyone know.
Feel cheated and DO NOT RECOMMEND !
Great outdoor setup. Really friendly staff & waiters. Food and drinks were all excellent. Highly recommend if you're in FiDi during dinnertime.
The summer squash salad is a great balanced mix of taste, textures, and colors. We would go back just for that salad.
We all ordered the $25 Prix Fixe lunch and chose the Caesar salad and Vault burger. When my friends asked for burgers with medium- rare and rare doneness, our server said medium is how the kitchen cooked the burger. My friends requested the beef be pink on the inside. My friends' burgers came well-done and medium.
I cannot eat gluten for medical reasons and this place is very good at accommodating special dietary needs. The server ordered our starter salad without the crunchy topping and a lettuce wrap on my burger. I give my server and The Vault Garden high marks for their kind consideration and courtesy.
My Caesar salad needed a little more dressing. I was going to ask the server for more dressing, but he was very busy covering the other tables. Also, I remembered their kitchen was a block away, so I decided against waiting for more dressing and ate the rest of my lettuce plain. The romaine was fresh and crunchy, the dressing was delicious, and the small cloud of grated cheese added a tasty touch.
My friend loved every bit of the coconut cream pie. The other friend ordered beignets and was pleasantly surprised at the large size and different fillings. They were compared to NOLA's and deemed different but good.
Both friends wanted espresso coffees, but The Vault Garden doesn't have an espresso maker. Maybe they'll get one someday.
I ordered a fungi and truffle risotto before, and it was excellent.
We look forward to going back to The Vault Garden.
Great service. COVID safe. Lovely food.
Food some good, some not so . . .
They charged higher than usual for SF Mandate,
Plus charge for heat-lamp propane-gas (due to their only doing outdoor-seating),
Then service was so so,
Prices are high,
& The Vault did nothing for our special occasion !
I am still reluctant to eat indoors, so I am glad there are fine dining outdoor options like this. The covering and heated lamps did not at first glance appear to be enough to shut out the blustery downtown SF evening chill, but it was actually very cozy, and the string lights contribute to a surprisingly sweet atmosphere for the otherwise sterile financial district.
The service was attentive and friendly. You're asked to order your appetizers and main course all at once due to the current location of the seating in relation to the kitchen, but things are still brought out one by one according to a typical eating pace.
Our food was all top notch, but I do wish I had been more attentive to the menu options and pricing. The pricing is all over the map, and that is ultimately a good thing because you can opt for a more affordable burger if you like or indulge in a pricier entree if you so choose, but we were not looking at prices at all and just happened to order two of the most expensive items. That's on us, but for the unsuspecting it's worth knowing in advance that the price points vary wildly from a reasonably priced $10 dessert to a less reasonable $50 corn risotto (yes, there are truffle shavings, but still that's a lot of $$$ for a small serving of an otherwise delicious risotto dish).
All in all, this is a great option for outdoor fine dining in spite of our menu oversights.
Cocktails and food always spot on!!
Great outdoor venue with attractive bar area, heat lamps, tasty food (corn risotto, scallops), nice cocktails. Nice to find this in the Financial District. Ni
Sitting outside on a beautiful night, this was the perfect choice.
Our table was ready when we arrived. The food was delicious. The staff was friendly and professional. The Burrata salad was to die for. All the dishes we ordered were fabulous. We will definitely be back when we’re in the City. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.
Excellent value and nice outdoor dining. Very friendly but slightly understaffed.
The service is slow-slow to get your drinks, slow to get the waiter's attention. The food is expensive for its mediocre quality. It is very noisy environment where it can be hard to have conversation. Also surprised to see the heat lamp charge on the bill! That was a first!
Despite the fact the lamp was dropping black tar on us while we were having dinner. Not going back!!!
Summer squash salad and double cut pork chop with Whitehall Lane Cabernet Sauvignon are amazing!
We booked a reservation for my husband's birthday, and upon arrival they even had a handwritten card wishing him Happy Birthday. We started with oysters, little gem caesar salad, and the baratta- which between the two of us was quite a bit, then we shared the steak and beignets for dessert. While the service was a bit slow- likely due to the kitchen being a ways away, the service was great, and we'd happily return.
The service was impeccable. The risotto and little gem caesar was yummy. The beignets are a pass because they were dense. I def recommend coming back again. The onsite parking is a bit confusing because as a diner, you need to enter on Pine Street not on California Street.
Sergio was a great server. My risotto was delicious!
Food was great! Our food was a little delayed but they made up for it!
Our birthday celebration at Vault Garden was a real disappointment. The ambiance was like sitting on a park bench out in an open field with the cold wind pouring through the plastic tent flaps. The heater ran out of gas and was not replaced despite our specific request. When we requested blankets to help against the cold, they only provided 2 blankets for 4 people, and then added a surcharge for a heating fee. The service was slow and spotty, and they did not make us feel welcome. The crab dip and ranch/dill almond appetizers were bland in flavor. The Vault burger was tasty and matched up with previous reviews, as did the scallops. Based on this experience, in combination with the exorbitant prices, we will never set foot at this restaurant again.
We have always been a fan of Hello Neighbor’s restaurants and of Vault, in particular, during the pandemic. We had dinner there last week with friends that was one of the best
meals we have had - even in the Before Times and tough to do when the kitchen is a block away. The service and timing of dinner on a busy Friday night was perfect. The flavors and presentation of all the dishes was amazing from a tasty asparagus appetizer to the scallop dish and the duck leg. Really wonderful and can’t wait to go back. Congrats team.
The staff were amazing and attentive. It was the first time I had dined out in SF since the pandemic began and I felt super safe and relaxed.
Bartender was 10/10 and had a great beard.
I had a lovely dinner. Delicious food and terrific service by my waiter, Marco. I have already recommended Vault.
Very nice service. Food great. Location amazing.
The Risotto was changed that day and it was pretty good. Crab dip starter was cold and small portion. The duck was cooked amazingly and its vegetable side was a great compliment. The terrace feel is very cool and it was kept warm on a cold night.
They made the best of their outdoor dining venue. The staff and food were excellent. The noise factor, blaring non-discript music really detracted from the experience.
The service was fantastic, it was my wife’s bday and they had written a card for her which was a special touch. The food was good as well. A little pricey tho
$14 Cocktails in plastic cups 😩
