It was shut - why could we book a table of the return to has closed down - very disappointing
The food was first class and well presented with a menu that is not overwhelming four of us wined and Dined great !
I booked this meal with you and received confirmation on my phone and then a reminder that 'could I still attend.' which I replied 'yes' too. Copies on my phone.
I arrived, only to see a sign on the door saying they wer closed due to a wedding function taking place. I phoned them to be told they were indeed closed for this reason and apologised about the booking mistake. I was very fortunate to be able to get a table at a nearby restaurant at such short notice on a Saturday. I later phoned the manager to complain but she said it was 'Open Tables' fault which was a pathetic excuse because of the confirmation I had received. The manager did not seem particularly bothered, I feel I should be recompensed in some way for the massive error on their part. My son, (who I hadn't seen in seven weeks) and his girlfriend had come to visit me from Portsmouth and this was meant to be a special occasion. I'm very disappointed to say the least.
Unfortunately the place was virtually empty which probably contributed towards the lack of atmosphere. Service in the restaurant was awful, however there was only 1 young lad taking food and drink orders and then bringing it all to the table. We had a long wait!. However there were many bar staff - I don't think they got the balance right. Food was OK, not amazing. Starter was a little odd - I giant jar of chicken liver pate with a tiny single slice of bread?!?!
I'd heard good things about the place, yet found the whole experience drab and disappointing.
Wouldn't go back or recommend for food. Maybe just drinks if with a crowd.
Booked a table on line for 1945 arrived to be told there would be an hour wait !
Left went next door to Artys great food and arrive in there
Food was very good but restaurant wasn’t very busy...but waitress gave us a list first that they had not got left on the menu which was quite a lot to say it was Saturday night and hardly anyone in. So choices were very limited but I must say the food we chose was very good....but I would visit again the staff were very pleasant
Very disappointing. The historical interesting venue is let down by appallingly bad service and lacklustre food. The young waiter had clearly had very little training and was struggling with even basic knowledge of his role. The table was sticky and dirty and the wet wipes I used to clean it were black with dirt. Menus were dog eared and soiled. My risotto was like a bowl of gruel and my friend ‘s fish and chips overly greasy. Never again.
Atmosphere was not great as restaurant was empty, only 2 tables full. Food was not great, chips looked and tasted like they had been waved over the fryer. Steaks were not cooked right. We order 3 medium and 1 medium rare, they came out 3 medium rare and 1 medium, we were so hungry we just ate it and left!
Booked via the victuler website through open table. Turn up on the day of my booking to find the restaurant closed and does not open on mondays. Even had a reminder to attend!
Poor level of quality service think due to it being understaffed. However the food was good and reasonably priced. Did notice that the menu online was different to what we were given in the restaurant. Have had bar menu before which was as lovely. Will think again before booking the restaurant.
The food is really good but overpriced. Unfortunately the whole experience was let down by the fact that there were no where near enough waiting and bar staff and we waited 45 minutes just for a bottle of wine and two beers. The waitress was very apologetic and lovely but she was run off her feet. The restaurant was not even half full so goodness knows how they would cope on a busy Friday night. We had very nicely cooked steaks but overall it seems very overpriced for what you get. Especially when there are other places nearby where you can get a very nice meal for half the price.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Our waitress was on her first day and she did so well, I hope they keep her on as she was on trial.
The food was excellent I would recommend the restaurant to anyone thinking of going
Went on a Sunday. The food was gorgeous. Can’t remember the two waitresses names. But both lovely. Great location. Will certainly be going back
I would recommend a friend to visit the Victualler but to only have a drink! The food is overpriced especially for the portion size you get!
Disappointed that everything described on the website was wrong, initially given 3 menus only to be told that 2 of them were not available. Waiter did his best but, I believe, was let down by the, new, management not having things ready. Will try again in a couple of months as the food we received was actually quite good. Need to get their act together.
I can image The Victuallers is a busy and packed location on a Friday or Saturday, especially due to its location and with a spot of good weather. We dined on a Tuesday evening which with good fortune was pleasantly quiet. Staff were welcoming and friendly, allowing us enough privacy to enjoy the meal but with timely attention to ensure we didn’t wait to order or between courses. The food was excellent, as was the price. In all we had a first rate anniversary meal. Thank you to The Vituallers and staff.
On a recommendation and also because they accept Meerkat Meals and Tastecard, we headed to meet friends for a quiet meal. The only negative was the limited parking and poor signage to find the place. Once we found it there was nothing to fault. The staff were super friendly and helpful and on a Thursday evening the place was quiet and comfortable to chat over a meal.
The food was lovely with lots of it and great value too. My friends and I have already decided on a return to The Victualler for our next get together.
The building is beautiful, the set up of chairs and tables etc lovely although if you sit on the long bench you need a cushion. Only 3 tables used so Service was okay but had to wait a long time for food but it was fresh and cooked well. The chips were delicious. They no longer sell pizza like it says on the website which is a shame. Noise level was quiet as not many people in the restaurant but can imagine with the type of building it is the noise would travel. Food prices are above average but if you are using a taste card or discount card 2 for 1 then it’s totally worth going. The biggest let down is the parking and signs to find the place. You have to park in a massive card park full of different zones. Then go through some black iron gates and turn right. Originally you think you are trespassing as it looks like private property. So more signs and info needed on the website.
So much potential as gorgeous building and lovely food but the ambience and service was terrible for a Saturday night. Pretty empty and yet everyone around was complaining about speed of service and lack of care and attention of staff. Waited ages for drinks, main came when still finishing starter.
Friendly service, amazing food. Spot on!
Been 3 times, but had to return for a mummy daughter date night x
Poor service. A basic menu and a noisy atmosphere. Go for a drink only... it’s on the marina. A nice spot.
Was looking forward to a pizza from the bar menu and a gin. When we asked for pizza menu we were told they were not available. Would have been good to have a notice on their website to say about the unavailability instead of the menu.
Did really enjoy the burgers instead, but when you crave pizza, that is want you want!
My brother & wife came down from London for a visit so we booked a table, the staff who greeted us were polite & friendly but seemed harassed & unsure of where to place us so I asked if they had not received our booking, I was told it was there but the table we should of had was taken so they’d find us another. We were told someone would be along shortly to take our drinks order, nearly half an hour passed so we flagged down a waitress, again very apologetic & friendly. Our starters took ages to arrive, my brothers octopus rings arrived 10 minutes later & the accompanying aioli consisted of a minutely squiggled decoration underneath, when querying if that was indeed all we were just told yes that’s it. We were never asked if we’d like another drinks order so we went up to the bar ourselves and cleared the empty glasses. Another 2 hours passed until the mains arrived. Table water requested 3 times eventually arrives afterward. We noted that it seemed only two waitress’s were doing all the running & a man occasionally wandered about but was mostly on his mobile so when visiting the bathroom & discovering no paper In the ladies I asked the same man who the manager was? Surprised, he managed to remove his attention from his mobile screen to say ‘he was!’ and that he’d already asked the girls to take care of the toilet rolls, seeming to dismiss me by returning his attention to his mobile. I told him all of the above, stating how unimpressed I was with him avoiding actual work by his ignorant behaviour with his mobile, he said we’d receive a discount on our bill. Waitress tried again to excuse service etc & appease us with glowing statements of her solid teamwork. Desert menus were offered . nearly an hour passed so we gave up thought we’d order cocktails or coffees but were told cocktails no longer being served. Waitress in the meanwhile realised she’d forgotten to take our order.Sorry not good enough! Poor service, poor management & a waste of a beautiful venue.
Wonderful service!! Lovely staff and bar staff. Had a very enjoyable night, will 100% return soon.
It is a shame as it started off so well, we had a friendly greeting but i really think they cannot call themselves a restaurant, they need to just do bar food as they have not got the right staff in place to be both, and due to them serving bar and restaurant food the service was really slow, therefore they are just not good enough for us to return or for us to recommend
Friendly staff (thanks Rhia, Matt, and Dec) and superb food. We were especially impressed with the homemade ice cream and sorbets! Would definitely go again.
The venue was large and empty, with only a couple of other tables being used. They had lost half the menus during the day - don't know why - and although still serving the food on this part of the menu, we were not offered this until we pointed out the website had a larger menu. Steaks were not cooked as requested. The only waitress was eating her dinner at the same time as us.
Overall we didn't feel welcome, nor did we feel the food was very good and it was overpriced.
The serving staff were good The meal was OK, burnt Yorkshire pudding, the staff member said it would have been changed had we said, however it would have been almost impossible not to notice this when it was put on the plate. Beef very good and plentiful, fried kale different. Carrots soggy, cauliflower cheese was lacking the cheese sauce, some of the roast potatoes had been kept warm for too long and were chewy and not palatable
Staff very friendly and tried to accommodate given the menu was mostly all sold out, however, waited an age for service and had to return chips as still hard. Had a joint steak meal, approx £65 (little else available), I have an allergy to prawns so my husband had his portion and they changed mine to mushrooms. The small bowl of greasy mushrooms received would not have cost a fraction of the tiger prawn portion! Very disappointing. There also didn’t seem an obvious option to opt out of the gratuity, bosh.... with 2 drinks, a £65 meal and gratuity on top it was a very expensive evening... we didn’t stay for drinks after as it was also too loud.
The one good thing was that waiting staff were lovely.
The Victualler is such a cool place tucked away place to go in Gosport. The service there is always fab and they do amazing food!
In the summer it’s the best as it’s right next to the marina and just great views across to Portsmouth.
Absolutely nothing in gosport compared!!!!
Outstanding food, excellent service and great atmosphere
The service was great and the food amazing. We had a really lovely evening
We went for my birthday. The food was OK mine was very disappointing though . I had the lamb 3 tiny lamb chops and veg . No potatoes... I had to ask for some but only got chips in the end.
The drinks a were very slow coming to the table which was surprisingly as the restaurant was not overly busy for the time of year.
Our waitress I think Laura or Lauren was doing her best and was lovely really helpful
But she seemed to be the only one running round like a headless chicken.
It was an OK experience .
I'd maybe come again but just for.lunch.
It's a shame as the actual restaurant and ambiance was so good.
