10/10 will go again! Everything was what I expected and more! The food is superb! Compared to other Japanese restaurants like the ones in the city, Umai has great food for a reasonable price and a comfortable atmosphere. Had an unforgettable birthday 😁
This neighborhood gem serves up impeccably fresh, high quality fare affordably and consistently to an eclectic mix of Lincoln Park families, DePaul professors and students, date night empty-nesters and Yuppie couples from its convenient location on Fullerton Ave. next to DePaul's Theatre School, with plenty of easy parking at hand and a short walk from the Fullerton L stop. The space and service both reflect the same careful attention to detail and enjoyment as the food: high volume ceilings, an extraordinary original mural, well-spaced tables and graceful, attentive waiters all contribute to an inviting atmosphere. A short, but well-curated wine and beer list, along with the most expertly-composed martinis in the area, tempt guests to linger and people watch through the grandly-sized windows.
Had such a great experience at the Clark St. location last Valentine's Day that we just had to come again! Made a reservation at the LP location this year. There was no host to greet us when we entered, and it seemed that the servers were doubling as hosts as well. This was a surprising difference compared to the South Loop location.
Arrived on time for our reservation and were informed that our table was not ready because it's the table they normally use to place their to-go orders. Basically, our table had bags and bags of food waiting to be picked up despite us having made a reservation. We asked if another table was available, seeing as 80% of the restaurant was unoccupied, and were told that they had all been reserved. Ok, sure, but why is our table not ready at the time it's supposed to be ready? The attention to service and detail could have been a lot better in this regard -- seeing your table used as a "waiting area" for to-go orders isn't the best way to start off a dining experience. Truthfully, it kind of ruins the rest of your visit no matter how good the food is.
Ordered the Nabeyaki Udon and the Lollipop Chicken. The udon was great for the winter weather but I wish it was just a little hotter. You get 5 huge wings for $7! Definitely worth it. We would have ordered more, but the whole vibe was just thrown off by how things started. Their food is superb, as noted by all other reviewers here, but I would like to see Umai work on the consistency in customer service across their locations. It would benefit both the restaurant and customers greatly!
We arrived to a mostly empty restaurant. Despite this we were seated next to one of the only occupied tables. We asked if we could sit elsewhere ans were told no as the tables were timed and our table would have another reservation in 1hr 15min. None of those tables were filled during our time in the restaurant yet we were made to sit super close to another couple (who had horrible table manners, made worse by the near dead silence of the restaurant).
We went for sashimi. Ordered the 10 piece plate. Confirmed with the waiter that it wouldn't just be the basic fish (offered to order a LA carte if so). Waiter assured us it wasn't basic. It was basic and the fish was cut by someone who doesn't know sashimi.
We won't be back.
Great service, beautiful design, even better food!
Good food and service
Great noodle place. I would recommend the Kare Udon, and sushi for appetizers. Lychee Martini was also great.
Good food. Big portions.
Servers never checked our table to refill water. Had to raise hands to get attention to get check and ask for water.
First time there for lunch. Friend and I shared 2 specialty rolls and it was more than enough. Fresh, tasty, unique and esthetically pleasing. We will be back!
Great time. First time at this one but goto the one on south loop all the time.
Visiting my daughter who’s attending college at DePaul. She comes here quite a bit and recommended Umai as our dinner spot. So delicious and so chill. I was also pleasantly surprised at the prices. Will go back for sure!
We went to celebrate a birthday and, as always, the ambiance, cuisine, and service were excellent. Nuii, our server, was professional and personable and made our experience at Umai especially nice. We highly recommend Umai to those who enjoy a more home cooked style of Japanese cuisine and will, of course, be returning as well.
One of my favorite Japanese restaurant in Chicago, good food, good service, good price
The food was great! The service was fine. I did feel like we didn't have the waiter or waitress to stop by our table to check on us more often than the other tables. At some point we were out of water and it took a while for the waiter to come by so I could ask him for a refill.
Great lunch menu
Very great time and yummy food! Must try
Came in for a quick lunch w my 8 month old. It wasn’t very busy... food was delicious and service was great!
Service was extremely slow and food missed the mark.
Delicious and reasonably priced. Service was greaf
Amazing food, so delicious. The amount food was worth the amount your going to be paying for. Great food.
Good food but not baby friendly, no diaper Changing place.
Great neighborhood spot, good atmosphere, food, and service! The asparagus roll dinner was awesome!
Great food and service.
The place is very nice. Clean, classy and great food. It’s mostly ramen and sushi . Very good it’s a must try.
Always great at this place! No complaints!
The sushi was not fresh at all. My husband and I could take more than two bites of the four roles we ordered. There was even discoloring in the salmon that was dark.
Tbis was my first time eating at Umai and it was absolutely wonderful! The food and atmosphere were top notcb and totally worth the expenses!
The food was alright; not good enough for the price...
Umai is my go-to spot for Japanese food. Their menu has a ton of variety if you're not feeling sushi. Good quality for the price and it's nice that they have 2 locations.
Excellent sushi and a nice selection of other Japanese dishes. Not everyone in my family likes sushi so I needed to find a restaurant with a broader menu and Umai was perfect, we had a dinner group of 6 people and everyone loved their food.
i feel the quality of food is not as good as past. The rice tastes hard and the pork tastes dry.
Maybe i will go to the main store in downtown next time.
Great udon curry noodle with beef!!! Wow! So good!!! And the white truffle sushi roll was to die for as was the chicago roll! We will for sure be back,
Big Disappointment... went on a strong recommendation, but was totally disappointed by the quality of the sashimi... the tuna color was not right, so lifeless. I know my sashimi. Was it because it was a Sunday? I am too scared to try again.
The Nabeyaki udon that my mother ordered was fine. Standard fare. But why on earth do they put in two kinds of eggs, the sushi egg tamako AS WELL as the poached Japanese egg? I can only think of them as fillers for lack of other ingredients.
Not sure why this place has such high ratings...
I love this place! Amazing udon and really great curry... brought back mems of being in Tokyo.
NOT VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY!! A couple of appetizers, and a couple of rolls are about your only options. Service was friendly but slow. It took 10 minutes before anyone said hello to us.
Never entered my opentable reservation just sat us at an open table. After the fact I got an email I skipped out on my reservation.
Top 5 best sushi restaurants in Chicago! Delisious!
I was disappointed in my whole experience. They seemed to changed a few items on the menu. I ordered a mojito and it was not good one at this location. They used to have a ginger beer that was not alcholic now it is. The ginger ale is nothing special. The food was not the best all around.
Very comfy, beautiful, and clean environment. The staff were friendly. The food was really good! I h the d the wings which were delicious and Ramen, which was okay (It was my first time). Overall, great experience
