We absolutely love UNION. having stayed at the press hotel many times we always include Union at least once or twice during our visit. always delish.
Sat at bar before we dined at a table. Ordered our fav bottle of wine silver oak. Bartender was fab. Headed to our table and service was just ok. We don’t need tons of attention and we have always had excellent service at Union when males waited on us. Had a female. She was just ok. We are great tippers. And just gave her the bare minimum. She missed out. We usually double our tip.
For some reason we found the food a bit salty. Maybe it was our taste buds. My husband had the chicken with chicken livers and i had the special veal dish. Both delicious but for some reason like i said found both dishes salty.
Our app was to die for. Clams that had some stuffing in it and broth and lobster. Sooo good.
We love Union and will def be back.
The food was very good. Not a five star restaurant but not taking anything away from them. Everything was great looking and great tasting. Had two kids under 4 and no issues.
Took about 25 minutes to get our drinks which was the only drinks we would receive due to the lack of attentiveness by the staff. When the pot roast got to me at the table it was lukewarm at best, the duck was flavorless.
Great food! Knowledgeable server. A bit noisy
We have had our waiter before and find him attentive and knowledgeable. The menu is just different enough so that you aren't thinking "I could make this at home", but not so strange that you have to ask a lot of question about what you are eating! The menu variety is just the right size with a good selection, expertly prepared. I like the atmosphere of Union and would recommend it to anyone visiting or living in Portland. Note there are several seafood dishes to pick from.
The Union Restaurant is uniquely located close to Merrill Auditorium. The food was excellent. I had the duck breast and my husband had the hake. Both were beautifully cooked and delicious. He enjoyed the squash and pear bisque as well. We shared a delightful apple pie Napoleon for dessert. We plan to return.
Wonderful brunch last weekend. The blueberry muffins were the best we have ever had. The entree selection had something for everyone. The red flannel hash was terrific. The building and it's history is unique and another reason to visit. Staff were very friendly and attentive.
Sometimes you go to a restaurant and it's okay. You never return. Other times you go to a restaurant and you leave knowing you'll definitely go there again. Union is the latter. The night we went, it was very busy. Not an empty table to be seen. Still, the service was excellent, the food was perfect (I had pot roast and my husband had a duck entree), and the wait time for your food was just right.
Fabulous food and service....but we went on a busy night and had both a very noisy environment and a long wait. Otherwise just outstanding.
Our server was awesome — pleasant and efficient, which helped us get to our play on time. Food was delicious, as usual.
First rate in every way.
Union is one of those hotel restaurants that locals go to because of their cuisine and drink menu - good for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Try scallops or hanger steak, salmon, brussels sprouts and dont forget House Old Fashioned
Great service, food, and atmosphere.
Market Plate was extraordinary!
We had a family birthday gathering for linch on a Saturday. The service and seating were great. My only disappointment was the limited lunch menu on weekends, when “breakfast all day” is the main offering.
We did find good options among the few main dishes offered, but some kind of soup would have been nice on a raw and wet winter day!
Go early if you find noise to be a problem. Otherwise a wonderful place for a meal.
We had breakfast and dinner. Everything was perfect!
First time there was great. I had the skate, my wife the poached eggs with mushrooms. Both excellent started with cheese plate. Also good. Ted was a great waiter. I recommend the place highly
We had a fantastic dinner! The duck breast was cooked perfectly- as was everything else. The breakfast was superb...perfectly poached eggs, red flannel hash, fresh squeezed juice....I could go on and on.
Definitely hard to go anywhere else after our dining experience at the Union.
6 person table. The environment was comfortable, warm and inviting. The wait staff was extremely knowledgeable and charming, they helped to us to select apps and wine without being pushy or up selling. The restaurant remained quiet and charming even as the tables filled. Would HIGHLY recommend this place during any time of the year. 10/10 will be back for more.
Outstanding as usual. Great staff, ambience and food and wine.
My fiance and I went for Christmas Dinner. A 3 course prix fix menu was offered for $65.00. The choices were not that exciting. Our Server was very rude and condescending. I decided on the Arrugala Salad, Prime Rib and Gingerbread Cake. When the food arrived I noticed that the prime rib looked like mostly fat. I took 2 bites noticed that the entire piece of meat was fat. I stopped eating and mentioned to the server that it was all fat. He agreed and removed the plate. Nothing else was offered in place. Next our desserts came and were quite good. We finished and the bill was presented. The server mentioned that they made an exception and only charged $30.00 for my meal. I was beyond insulted and couldn't believe that they actually had the audacity to charge me $30.00 for a Arrugala salad and a piece of gingerbread cake when I never had a main course. Not wanting to make a scene, We paid our bill and left a gratuity even though I didn't think he deserved anything. I would not recommend this restaurant. Horrible food and service. Extremely overpriced. We will not be back.
Union never disappoints but on this occasion, they set the bar into the way into the stratosphere. Maybe one of the top 5 dinner experiences ever. I was there solo (nasty breakup) and had the prix fixe offering with with wine pairing. Superb food with attentive and jovial service. Run, don’t walk to The Union.
This is NOT your typical hotel restaurant; it is a 5 star exceptional experience!
We first went to this restaurant before an event at City Center, thinking, "well it is conveniently located". What we experienced in food & service was clearly outstanding!
Great location, fine food, & outstanding service!
My son and I had a wonderful Christmas dinner at Union. The food, service, and ambiance were excellent.
We had a great Christmas lunch at Union.
If you don’t want to cook and want special then we recommend spending it at Union.
Excellent food, great ambiance but the hostess needs training or she was not top notch or has little hospitality or hosting experience. We were there on Christmas Eve at 8pm.
First, make sure you make reservations. This restaurant is always busy and for good reason. The service was superb and the food was some of the best I have had. One member of our party ordered the hanger steak; it was so tendered it could be cut with a butter knife. I ordered the salmon. Again, it was cooked to perfection and the seasoning was wonderful.
I recommend Union and cannot wait to go back.
Excellent dinner. All was good in our group except schnitzel which was a bit dry. Loved the homeny. Bisque was good as always.
We dined for Christmas Eve. There were 8 of us and the service was amazing. All of our meals were delicious. We will definitely dine here again.
We had a very enjoyable dinner. The only issue was that the waiter did not mention that a dish was spicy. One of us couldn't tolerate it. We swapped plates, problem solved. And then we finished our delicious dinners.
Met family for breakfast before we went to the symphony. The service and atmosphere was relaxing and cordial. The menu was unique and delicious. We were able to visit and not feel rushed to leave. It was great.
No impressed with the food or the service
Wonderful dinner & drinks, with great service. Modern, chic ambiance and noise level wasn't bad for easy conversation. Also, very convenient for a performance at Merrill Auditorium.
Truly excellent food, unlike anything else we've eaten in Portland.
Union provides an excellent dining experience. Service was attentive and smooth, and the meals were quite and delightful.
Yummy apps! Truffle chips were delicious. Seafood chowder -amazing. Great atmosphere!
Delicious food!! Had I not signed up for the land, sea to fork food tour, I wouldn’t have known about this wonderful restaurant. I love that they use local to support farms and other local businesses. If you go, you must try the New England style chowder, it’s fantastic!!
I ordered the Scallop dish because I was in the mood for seafood dish. It had Oxtail in it which could have been OK, but it overpowered the dish. A red wine would have gone better with the dish instead of the white wine I ordered.
