Definitely a solid restaurant with a very varied menu. Something for everyone. Great drinks too.
Amazing cocktails! Beautiful restaurant! The salads were phenomenal and the scallops were delicious.
Lover the food, but I like cheese cake in a wedge not smeared in a bowl.
Great meal and generous portions. Would return again and do recommend it highly to others!
The dinner was amazing. We had the lobster special and pork shank. The desserts looked beautiful but were underwhelming. We definitely would not have dessert again. Service which I would have hoped to be exceptional was poor, possibly just one bad waiter.
Good food and nice environment. There are not many tables.
First trip to Portland, had read about Union and it didn’t disappoint. Great food and lively atmosphere. My partner had the best bolognese, rivals anything found in Boston
We don't eat meat, fish, or wheat, so are a little difficult to please, but we put together a delicious series of dishes: butternut pear soup, kale basil salad, roasted fingerlings, and a chicken mushroom dish. The kitchen was happy to substitute a wheat-free item for another. I'd have given them five stars, but there wasn't as much variety for us to choose from as I'd hoped.
This was our first visit, and the experience lived up to the restaurant's excellent reputation. Bravo!
Great experience overall!
Food was good. Not a "wow!" Service excellent. Several things may contribute to my moderate review: seated outside of the main dining area so not in the midst of dining room energy. Wobbly table had to be adjusted, but our soup and salad had already been served and had to wait with food on the table while fixed.
Great service, excellent tasting meal! Worth the price.
The food was delicious and the atmosphere was comfortable and relaxing. Loved it!
Beautiful place, very nice people but are server seemed distracted and left us for long amounts of time without checking in.
Fresh food and impeccable service are a winning combination.
Hubby and I were here for lunch on Valentine’s Day. It was busy but thankfully we had reservations. From the moment we entered, we felt welcome and cared for.
The lunch menu is concise but should satisfy most people.
I had fish tacos with a light salad which was refreshing.
My husband had a great thinly sliced roast beef sandwich with caramelized onions and melted cheese. The accompanying fries were double fried I think. Not a limp fry in the bunch.
We splurged on an apple napoleon that was a modern take on apple pie. Delish!
We will definitely return, so should you.
Had a wonderful meal, as usual. We really appreciated their vegetarian menu!
The food was amazing!! Portion sizes were perfect!! The wait staff was lovely and the atmosphere was warm and inviting! Highly recommend: )
The lunch special was not great. Too much food and too rich
Great spot for a special occasion! Food was great- no complaints!
The food was amazing and the service was great
Beautiful restaurant with great menu items. I love that they have a vegetarian menu now!
My husband and I visited Union for the first time to celebrate my birthday. The atmosphere is hip with an open kitchen, high ceilings and contemporary seating. The staff had cutely left a birthday card on our table signed by all the servers. We ordered a charcuterie platter and a cheese plate. Our server combined them onto one large slate. It was both bountiful & delicious. The meats included house-made prosciutto, duck breast and speck along with several delicious hard cheeses, toasted nuts, dried fruit, house-made fig jam, gluten-free blueberry toasts, grilled baguette and fennel-Dijon mustard. We followed this smorgasbord with two salads. I had the kale with warm almond dressing. It was deelish. We washed all of that down with a couple of glasses of a delicious Prosecco. After we finished our salads, the server presented us with an assortment of madeleines and meringues with a candle in recognition of my birthday. A great, great evening. We will definite return!
Best meal ever. Service, food quality, and preparation can not be beat!
Waitress was fantastic and all food was well prepared and timely. Eager to go back again very soon.
Everything was absolutely amazing. I did request through reservation that something be done for my fiancé’s 40th birthday but nothing was done and the server seemed a little overwhelmed.
The food was mediocre at best, and certainly not worth the price. For example, the Kale and Basil salad was just absolutely soaked in oil, and the Truffled Pot Roast was under seasoned and tasteless to the point it even needed salt.
Additionally, the service was oddly aggressive about refilling water and clearing plates; our meal was being constantly interrupted by someone’s arm in front of our faces.
And, I’m not making this up, Union doesn’t have a bathroom of its own. You have to take a long, winding, and awkward walk through both a hotel lobby and bar to visit a restroom. But don’t worry, a staff member will join you for the awkward walk! (What?)
While there are some bright spots at Union, like the cocktails, they certainly don’t make up for the negatives. There are far better restaurants in Portland, especially at this price point, and I definitely would avoid visiting again. You won’t miss anything.
Second visit. The food was disappointing. The pasta was perfectly cooked but the bolognese sauce was over salted and lacking in flavor. The duck breast was medium rare but would have benefited from a little more char. The duck was also lacking in flavor and the endive was over spiced.
We had an amazing meal. It was our anniversary and the staff wrote a card for us and gave us each a glass of champagne, which was a great touch.
Hands down one of the better restaurants in Portland. Chef Josh is amazing with the meals he prepares and is active in the kitchen and styling the menu. If you notice there's herbs lining the kitchen that they'll pick fresh to use for seasoning on your meal. This is the kind of place where I'd say you can pick anything on the menu and be satisfied. They also handle orders with food allergies exceptionally. Always worth a stop.
Very accommodating, had a very cool kids menu and fancy crayons to keep our toddler busy, food was delicious and the Bloody Mary was excellent!
Dinner is always excellent at Union!! Their servers always have such attention to details. Water glasses are never empty as they continually refill them. The wine service is excellent ensuring the wine is served at the proper temperature. This evening we had the Shired Local Duck Egg which was seved with marinated mushrooms, duck lardons and xo sauce. It was presented in a small cast iron skillet and was very unctuous!! We also had the Braised Octopus (see photos for description) it was tender, flavorful with warm spices! We split the Broiled Mahogany Clams, they were cooked to perfection and were delicious, I can only imagine how they are with the lobster butter (allergy and unable to eat)! One of our main entrees were the Pan Seared Sea Scallops which had a good sear on the scallops, very moist and delicious! The Faroe Island Salmon was excellent & cooked to my temp! Everything we had was delicious and one should not hesitate to dine here!! They are very allergy sensitive and are able to serve the dishes without the allergen and one would never have missed it!!
Our table was ready when we arrived. Great service. I had the salmon. Perfectly seasoned, well prepared. It was on a bed of toasted couscous and served with roasted acorn squash. Someone at our table had the scallops. Scallops were quite tasty , but the sauce was on the salty side, possibly due to the pork belly. We also ordered 2 desserts. The one that I tried was the chocolate mousse. Delicious! We would return. Good food, comfortable atmosphere, great service. Plus we like the fact that the tables are not too crowded together and the noise level was on the quiet side.
I guess they suffer from the quandary of aspiring to the rubric of "fine cuisine". It requires an ambition to create unique culinary experiences and anything short is going to be disappoint, whereas if they aspired to something more homey like comfort food it might be considered topnotch. My hake presented as a sort of fish stew tasted great and I truly enjoyed it as fish stew but it did not rise to fine cuisine. My wife's scallop dish may have been inspired in its inception but what came to the table was a big flop, with undercooked beans and the big question: what kind of culinary experience were they trying to create for the diner? Yes a big question mark.Oh yes the octopus and gnocchi was strange as it was hard to distinguish the two.Was the gnocchi just filler?
We absolutely love UNION. having stayed at the press hotel many times we always include Union at least once or twice during our visit. always delish.
Sat at bar before we dined at a table. Ordered our fav bottle of wine silver oak. Bartender was fab. Headed to our table and service was just ok. We don’t need tons of attention and we have always had excellent service at Union when males waited on us. Had a female. She was just ok. We are great tippers. And just gave her the bare minimum. She missed out. We usually double our tip.
For some reason we found the food a bit salty. Maybe it was our taste buds. My husband had the chicken with chicken livers and i had the special veal dish. Both delicious but for some reason like i said found both dishes salty.
Our app was to die for. Clams that had some stuffing in it and broth and lobster. Sooo good.
We love Union and will def be back.
The food was very good. Not a five star restaurant but not taking anything away from them. Everything was great looking and great tasting. Had two kids under 4 and no issues.
Took about 25 minutes to get our drinks which was the only drinks we would receive due to the lack of attentiveness by the staff. When the pot roast got to me at the table it was lukewarm at best, the duck was flavorless.
Great food! Knowledgeable server. A bit noisy
We have had our waiter before and find him attentive and knowledgeable. The menu is just different enough so that you aren't thinking "I could make this at home", but not so strange that you have to ask a lot of question about what you are eating! The menu variety is just the right size with a good selection, expertly prepared. I like the atmosphere of Union and would recommend it to anyone visiting or living in Portland. Note there are several seafood dishes to pick from.
The Union Restaurant is uniquely located close to Merrill Auditorium. The food was excellent. I had the duck breast and my husband had the hake. Both were beautifully cooked and delicious. He enjoyed the squash and pear bisque as well. We shared a delightful apple pie Napoleon for dessert. We plan to return.
Wonderful brunch last weekend. The blueberry muffins were the best we have ever had. The entree selection had something for everyone. The red flannel hash was terrific. The building and it's history is unique and another reason to visit. Staff were very friendly and attentive.
