Just perfect.
Service was lovely. The duck came out way undercooked. They redid it and the chef gave us dessert. The redone duck was excellent. The Brussels sprouts and the hurrays were both also excellent. The crunchy cabbage salad was way underdressed and simply boring.
The food and wait service were very good.
However, our reservation was for 7:45 pm but out table wasn’t ready until 8:20. The host acted as if this was our problem when we were not happy with the situation.
They could at least have comped our desert.
Luckily the hotel has a nice lounge bar we we had cocktails, but it ended up being a muncher later night than we had hoped. I was not impressed by how they handled the situation.
We loved the environment and entire service staff. I love an open kitchen and the decor and vibe was great! The food was clearly a case of trying too hard. The pretentiousness of the menu didn't match the lovely environment. It was expensive for what you got. And, please Chef, back off of the salt. We actually shared that with our server in an effort to be constructive. Several items we had were incredibly salty. Salt is usually a cover up for some other flavor short-coming and the pretentiously named sweet potato side with the steak was salty to the point of being inedible. This was very disappointing as it was my husband's birthday dinner and we went in with high expectations. Definitely a bummer, Union. I know you can do better.
This was our first visit to Union, but will not be our last. I had friends visiting and we chose Union based upon the menu and positive reviews. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was great for us to visit during our two hours there. Our party had various salads for appetizers, along with the roasted sprouts which were shared and a big hit. Entrees include hake, salmon and scallops. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the portions were just right. At the end of the meal the chef checked in with our table which was a nice touch. The service was timely and friendly.
Will definitely go again !
Bday for wife. Loved it.
Great spot for a quiet lunch or dinner. Service is good and the food is always excellent.
Food- Creamy Hominy was a bit too starchy. Chestnut Falafel kinda boring. My mom thought the duck could have had more flavor. My squash/pear soup was yummy. The 2 other guests liked their meals- Faroe Salmon & Hanger Steak. We split the chocolate pudding which was to die for. Noise: Most restaurants are noisy to me these days. My mother's & my hearing isn't as good as it used to be so it's a consideration when going out to eat. We had some difficulty tho the younger couple we were with didn't seem to have a problem. I don't know how that would be remedied except with carpeting which isn't practical in a restaurant.
I had a great meal but rated the service only good. I ate at the bar which was very busy and hence my service was inattentive. The mushrooms with whipped ricotta was great and i had the seared duck which was delicious. I had a nice prosecco which complemented my appetizer. I honestly have never seen the restaurant as busy and particularly on a cold night. Union is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland and i consider it in the top tier of choices.
The specialty drink with pistachios was not worthy of any notice. Bland and lifeless. The skate was terrible and uneatable. The kale salad was fair but nothing special. The duck was good but the leaks didn't go because they were too bitter. A very unspecial and unsatisfying meal. A real disappointment.
Great food and superb service. We would definitely go back even though it’s noisy.
Excellent meal
The food was just okay. We ordered two dishes. Tagliatelle pasta, and the Skate with lentils. We loved the fish dish except it needed more flavor, it was bland. And the pasta dish was overly sauced and lacked a nice flavor. It was just over the top heavy and not tasty. The overall ambience is wonderful except that each time I have been there, there is always a draft coming from the windows. Its an old building we understand, I will make sure that I ask to be seated away from the window in the future. The waiter was exceptionally great, and did not miss a beat. I no more than swallowed my last sip of wine and he was there refilling my glass. That means So much. Our Affogato dessert was wonderful and overall it was an enjoyable evening.
Excellent food and great service. The best scallops I’ve ever had.
Delicious food and great ambiance, service was fine, and showed up for lunch but they were only serving brunch.
My husband and I came here for dinner and were so happy that we did. Everything from the drinks, to the food and the service was absolutely outstanding. Would definitely come back here.
Overall great experience. We sat at the chef's table based on other posted reviews. It's counter seating with a fullview of the kitchen. "Dessert king" was fabulous. very personable and prepared a special desert not on the menu. We had the tagliatelle and braised octopus as our dinner entrees and would recommend both.
Creative and great food with a nice variety but not too much. Nice wines too. Great for dinner, breakfast and brunch and lunch.
One of our favorite restaurants. They do it right!
Restaurant forgot to bring out dessert with candle in order to celebrate a birthday. It was mentioned on open table and I even went to remind hostess beforehand. Total fail. 👎🏻
Good afternoon Food4thought, I would like to extend my apologies to you and your group. It is disappointing to hear that we were not able to create a positive experience, especially on a special occasion. Thank you for providing us the feedback that will help me to improve other's experiences with us. I do hope that you might consider joining us in the future. I would love the opportunity to extend my gratitude to you. Warm regards, Erica Walker F&B Manager ewalker@thepresshotel
The food was amazing, service was superb. A little expensive for what it is, but it’s worth it!
We ended up eating at the "Chef's Table", which is at the bar off the kitchen. The staff was great, and sent us off with an extra dessert (macaroons, marshmallows, madeleines). Union is first class all the way!
Wonderful. Love love love Union
We got to sit at the chef’s table for dinner (not requested) and the experience was great. All the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Food was fresh and flavorful and not too expensive.
Had dinner on Thursday for my birthday and the experience at Union was fabulous. I had heard the restaurant was well worth trying and I was even more pleased than I expected. The service was attentive and the food was very good. The staff even gave me a birthday card signed by all of them and some dessert to take home. Very thoughtful and excellent experience. 100% recommend Union.
It is my go-to spot for business lunches. Union never disappoints. Two of us had salads with salmon (which was cooked perfectly) and one had the Congress Street lunch, which changes daily: soup sandwich and salad.
One of the best meals we’ve had.
Would recommend 100%
Service was mediocre, and the food was disappointing. Very bland pot roast, the only good thing was the Brussels sprouts.
First disappointing dinner ever at Union. Waiter misordered food and delivered Hake instead of skate. Substitute pasta ordered quickly was not inspiring. Even my flank steak was not as good as before. Hope this was just an off night.
Thought waiter should have not charged for 2nd entree but we didn’t make a big deal about it.
Very disappointed. Mussels came in a bland tomato water broth. Pork shank was underseasoned. Scallops were beautifully cooked and ruined by a strange combination with ox tail and undercooked and underseasoned potatoes. An enticing menu that looked better than it tasted. A lot of great reviews so maybe we caught them on an off night, but we were very disappointed after some wonderful meals in Portland.
The Union is such a convenient spot for dinner before or after a PSO performance in the Merrill Auditorium, but more than that, the menu is interesting, not ordinary, and the food is delicious.
Our first visit to Union (at the Press Hotel) was this past Friday evening. It was a stunner. Absolutely excellent food...the braised octopus I had as my starter was just exceptional. My wife and I were so pleased by everything we experienced at this restaurant...not to discount the great service, but the food was the real star. I will be recommending it to anyone who happens to be in Portland, Me. and is looking for a great (...and we mean great) restaurant.
Very disappointing that our reservation was not adhered to and we had to wait 25 minutes for a table. Especially after you text and email so many times to make sure we are on schedule. Perhaps we should be texting, emailing and calling you next time to be sure that you will actually have the table ready as promised? This was such a departure from what has consistently been wonderful dinners, on time with what we reserved in the past.
We were there for theatre and just had a dinner that made it an unexpected highlight. Relaxed, lovely setting even with a full house, and just delicious food treats. We had the Maine Skate, Salmon, and some unbelievable brussels sprouts with a sauce and crispy walnuts. Everything was very well prepared, delicious and creative. We will be back for every meal we can when in Portland. This restaurant is one of the best.
Fantastic atmosphere and the food was exceptional.
A delightful brunch with delicious food. Our server was very attentive and interacted well. The lower number of stars has to do with the amount of time we waited for our meal, which seemed too long at 30 minutes
Enjoyed our lunch before going to Merrill Auditorium. Great.
Best meal ever! Can’t wait to go back!
This was the friendliest staff that we have had in a while . Very fun, delicious place ! Great drinks and food but even better was the service and staff
