Z Cafe & Bar
Service was slow but food was great
We went to this restaurant for Oakland Restaurant Week and had the $40 special. The appetizers and salads were good, but our pot roast entrees were very disappointing. The meat was on the dry side and stringy and there was minimal sauce to add some moisture. The mash potatoes tasted like it came out of a box.
Went there for Oakland Restaurant Week with 3 others and had a great time. Food was excellent especially the pot roast, apple walnut salad, chicken piccata and bread pudding. Lively atmosphere, extensive cocktail menu and awesome service. We'll definitely be coming back!
Really enjoyed the good food and the ambiance. Not enough help for a Sat. night which might have been due to restaurant week.
All three of us ordered different items and they were all very good. I'm sure I'll be back.
We were a party of 8 celebrating a birthday and had a wonderful time.
visited for Oakland Restaurant Week with 3 friends and had the Mississippi pot roast and grilled salmon....delicious! I'm not one to get pot roast but Z Cafe and Bar made a flavorful, tender one that was definitely a generous portion.
The crab cakes with tarragon sauce was ok....i prefer a crunchier exterior and the breading was soggy BUT they use plenty of crab without a lot of filler which was a major plus....all the salads offered for the evening Caesar's, Z House Salad and the Fuji apple were wonderful...lightly dressed.
Drinks were on point! had the Blueberry lemon drop and it was FANTASTIC....reasonable HH pricing...even at regular pricing it was the best! highly recommend dining here and will return to try their infamous Lobster ravioli...
Did the Oakland Restaurant Week menu to get away from all of my old standbys. Had the Crab cakes and Bruschetta the Mississippi River Pot Roast, House Salad, and Flourless Chocolate cake. Everything was very good, surprised by the pot roast.
I was looking forward to dining at this restaurant with my family to Celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season (for us), but was disappointed. It's a sad place with no ambiance or character. Food and service were just acceptable.
Had my usual Spicy Shrimp and Tito's and added the Pulled Pork with Roasted Garlic Fries...Great!!!
Great food and service! Hope to visit again soon!
Nice place for a quiet weekday dinner.
Very good happy hour drink. Food was very tasty with a laid back atmosphere.
Reservation at 6pm, Place is busy......nice ambiance, friendly and attentive server, other than 2-4 people at 4-5 tables dining, there were two separate large parties celebrating (one party in a separate private room).....place has a nice bar.
my entree (blackened tilapia, veggies, balsamic rice) was yummy and I ate all my veggies as it had a garlic infused flavor to the mix of broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrots..
My friend ordered bunless burger with fruits, and it was a good size burger, fruit looked fresh but I don’t know since it’s late season/November.
I have dined at the Z Café several times - always pleased with the food and service.
Very nice and quick service
The waitstaff was wonderful, very attentive. We very much enjoyed our meals and would recommend this restaurant when dining in downtown Oakland.
Great for a night out with friends. Classy casual. Food was delicious but restaurant is loud.
Love the atmosphere, service, food, and reasonable prices.
All food was great!!!
Everything was GREAT
Delicious very reasonably priced food; wide range of choices; generous portions; friendly & attentive service.
Great cocktails! Great service. Food varied by what we ordered. Loved the meatballs and fried green tomatoes. For dinner: I had the eggplant parmesan and it was amazing. Meatloaf was very good too. The blackened tilapia was a overpowered by the spices. Hard to taste the fish. Overall, a nice meal and cool atmosphere. Great spot for dinner before a show at the Fox or the Paramount.
Everything was GREAT
All went well. Noisy but could heat as well as necessary. Good food, nice place at the edge of a sketchy neighbourhood. I’d do it again
We were seated in the central dining room next to a table with six young women. They were literally screaming at each other for most of our dinner. A group line that should be seated in the back. We love the Cafe and often come before Temple.
Husband and I tried Z last weekend and were happily surprised at how nice it was inside. Looks are deceiving from the outside and we didn't expect much. Service and food were very good. Vegan options available. We will be back!
Hidden gem, really great food. Great portions. Friendly staff. Happy hour until 10pm. Would come back again!
Great Cafe / Bar. One of the best Happy Hours I have been to.
As always, food and service were excellent. Recommend the meat loaf and the Caesar salad.
Caesar salad was great, they overcooked my shrimp, remade, and took off the bill.
Great place, excellent food. Quiet enough to talk comfortable with your friends while enjoying the food. Pleasant service
Crab Salad sandwich was GREAT as was the B.A.T. burger and fries. Spicy Shrimp app is ALWAYS good
It was quiet for a Saturday, but we all agreed that the the choices were varied and many, and the value and food were exceptional. We plan on going back again. Soon.
We had a fabulous time. Always excellent. Thank you Mehdi.
Astonished that this place is still around given all the offerings in Oakland.. must be the value...because the food was mediocre at best...rotted salad greens are never acceptable and drowning them in dressing does nothing but try to hide the sins..portions were more than ample so that may be a draw for some but quantity never outweighs quality in my book.
From the time my party of 5 walked into the restaurant professional service. We felt welcome and the waiter was funny and very accommodating. This is a wonderful restaurant for great drinks and food. The crab cakes were the bomb. Thanks again for making my dear friend's birthday celebration great.
An OK place. I had the Caesar salad and the pork slider. Both were so-so. The pork was dry. The Happy Hour pricing is good—might be a good place to go for a drink.
Good Happy Hour values, especially the cocktails. Service is also good. Food/menu selections are just okay. There are many better options in town.
Tried the Chicken Picata and my usual Spicy Garlic Shrimp.
The chicken was tender and moist and if you like (I do) lemon caper sauce with lots of capers it was heaven.
