The food has evolved to a new level. We ordered Gazpacho soup which we never do. Prefer hot soups. But this was over the top, maybe because tomatoes are in season, but all 4 hot soup lovers were smacking their lips! Fussy vegetarian loved his egg, vegi course. They had our 2 birthday peoples’ names on our menu... They need some California wines.
I have been eating at Homestead since it opened. It has really been one of my favorite restaurants to go to for a lovely meal. However, the last two experiences were not as good as previous ones. I like the concept of pAying employees a liveable wage, but the price of dishes have gone up and the quality and imagination have gone down. My guest ordered the rib eye steak and it was incredibly dry, although tender. I had the salmon with but it could have used a delicious sauce to give it that extra something. The vegetables were perfectly prepared but it needed something to bring it together. I may go back again. But if the food does not improve, it may be my last.
We had an excellent dinner at Homestead. Start to finish, the food was superb. Everything was fresh, most of it was local, and it has all been prepared attentively and with creativity. Perfectly seasoned. Standouts included the softshell crab, the fennel salad, the hand cut pasta, and the watermelon sorbet with hibiscus granita. It was a hot day and we would have appreciated air-conditioning.
This was a family night meal which Means it was served on platters. tonight was prime rib night and portions were so generous I have a second meal tomorrow. Lucky me because it was incredibly delicious The meat was done perfectly and ditto for veggies. The twice cooked potatoes were crispy and I had to control my desire to eat them all
Amazing ambiance, phenomenal food made with the freshest and local ingredients with a charm that is unmatched.
One of my favorite restaurants, always such a treat! Staff is always kind and courteous. I love that the food price includes a living wage for their employees. Food is always excellent, light, and feels healthy.
Food disappointing at this visit. Not up to standard it’s been on previous visits. Soft/shell crab tasteless and undercooked.
I love this place! Consistently great food with always a new surprise on the menu.
Great service! Limited food options and not much flexibility in replacing meat options. If you are adventurous, you may want to try the chef's tasting menu. We tried a la carte and my husband loved his steak. Pasta was a bit bland and they couldn't come up with any kind of hot sauce for me. No AC. Good wine made up for anything lacking. Lively area and lots of people on the street, enjoying the weekend. Good neighborhood option.
This was our second visit to Homestead for a casual dinner outing. The first time was decent and we noted that we’d go back again during that visit, but a couple of the dishes during our second visit were oddly inedible and not I’m not sure if we’ll return. The staff were pleasant about it, didn’t charge for the dish we sent back, and comp’d a fresh salad. All in, not a bad experience...just a couple of suspiciously bad food items. We’ll watch the reviews and see, hopefully, if we just hit a bad night or just ordered the wrong things.
Fo specifics: the fried squash blossoms stuffed with mozzarella were really terrible — the fried batter was thick, over-breaded, soggy, and flavorless; the mozzarella inside was rubbery and bland; the sauce on top was uninspired. This dish might make for some good bar food, but not like any of the fried and battered squash blossoms I’ve had before. Also, a sole dish we had was bland and watery and served with bland, waterlogged shrimp and very mushy rice with a kind of Cajun-inspired hot sauce that tasted like it came from a jar. Nice try at something interesting, like a kind of jambalaya maybe, but the ingredients didn’t seem very high quality and the execution was quite poor.
On the edible end: the bread is fantastic, the tuna crudo was decent, and the arugula salad, although very simple (and also hard to mess up) was fresh and yummy.
We hope to see some better reviews of Homestead. We’d like to go back someday and give it another shot.
Food was good, but prices were higher than I remembered. The wine prices were outrageous and the corkage is $30. We were all shocked as we dine out a lot. $20 + for a glass of wine seems high.
We loved this place. The food was so fresh, very well prepared and delicious! We are looking forward to going back!
Great music. Lovely service. Memorable food tho thin selection but excellent preparation.
Would definitely return. Quiet intimate evening.
This place is one of our favorite place. Service is outstanding!
Everything was perfect except it was pretty hot in there.
Excellent Service, beautiful ambiance, great menu selection. We were not crazy about one of the main dishes, but it was not because of lack of attention, it was just not great to our specific palate. Otherwise, fabulous!
The Homestead team continues to dish up very satisfying, creative, seasonal food in a friendly relaxed environment. It has established itself as our favorite go-to restaurant for a special occasion or to satisfy self-indulgent whims. I especially like the house-made condiments (including an awesome hot sauce) that grace much of the food. The service is perfect and the Homestead team always makes one feel welcome.
Unfortunately, we were not impressed with the food. We asked for our ribeye to be cooked medium, and it came out rare. We sent it back, and they brought it back rare again. The bread and butter were delicious!!
Food was good, as always, but came out of the kitchen within minutes of sitting down. Definitely felt rushed. We ordered cheese course before Dessert to prolong our stay. Cheese was mediocre and dish was unimaginative. Asked the server to not rush the dessert out, cappuccino was Luke warm. We were out of there well within an hour and a half. Gratuity was included in Price of the dishes which I have no problem with, but maybe leads to a little bit of complacency. It was not our best experience there
Food is reliably excellent and innovative too. Floor staff are truly excellent.
No tipping takes one step out of the dining out equation!
This farm to table restaurant is always a treat. Their food is innovative and delicious. Our grilled squid was tender and perfectly prepared as were our next two courses. I could make a meal of their home made bread and love to take a loaf home. The servers are attentive and friendly.
Great food and great service. Pricey buy worth it. The small menu changes weekly with fresh, seasonal dishes. We will definitely return.
Food is excellent. Service needs some effort.
Another wonderful Sunday dinner. The food is outstanding and the ambience is relaxing. The service was 5 star. We always have a lovely time.
Incredible flavors in wholesome local foods, my complements to the chef!! The service was impeccable.
A little on the spendy side for the food, which was delicious, but a lot of competition at this price level. Service is included, still getting used to that with pricing.
I would go back. My halibut was delicious, perfectly cooked with nice crispy skin. The quail appetizer was truly outstanding.
The salmon crudo was out of character for such wonderful other offerings. The salmon practically had to be torn from my mouth with my fingers to chew it! How uncomfortable!! Crudo to the max! And the salmon had NO taste, literally. It was to be wrapped in lettuce with shredded carrots, coriander, and a wonderful chunk of tasty peanut butter spiced up. Why bother adding a tasteless, tough piece of salmon? This was a very disappointing appetizer.
But the quail was so amazing as was the rest of the meal, it is worth another try.
Food and service were both incredible! But, be cautious. We parked in the open city lot at the rear and our car was vandalized in daylight, windows broken, property stolen while we had dinner 5-6:30PM on a Friday night. Put a serious damper on the dining experience!
Ambiance was good, food was good, service was friendly and attentive. However, seems very overpriced to me. They "recommend" ordering one selection from three courses - all of which are pricey. I had a small squash salad that ran $15, entrees are in the $35-$40 range. I understand that they use organic ingredients and service is included...but even then, still seems overpriced. I wasn't bowled over by the food (good, but not amazing). Bring the prices down and I would think about going back.
We went for the Sunday Supper on recent Father’s Day. Fixed 3 course menu only & very over-priced for quality & amount. Squid escebeche had hardly any squid, steak was tough, dessert mediocre. Little sign of creativity (everything grilled). Wine over-priced & house wine advertised not available. Very disappointing. Will not go back.
We went here for a special occasion and were greeted by not so friendly staff, sat us in front of the hot kitchen. That I can deal with, but the food was terrible. The bread was by far the best part and the waitress kept pushing for us to order more and more and all we wanted was to leave! Also, never go there on a warm day because if they sit you right next to the kitchen, you’ll sweat the entire time, as we did. Octopus was undercooked and gross and the salads were something you can easily make at home! Why did we waste a night here? Never again!
Great service, great food, wonderful leftovers.
Wow! We had never heard of Homestead before, but driving back home from Milpitas to the North Bay, we found it online and decided to try it. Although the ambiance isn’t much, the food and wine choices were fantastic. Fresh, local ingredients, small but perfect menu, and a great wine list. Although it’s out our way, we hoot go back and definitely recommend it...
I loved the dining room. The service was very good, but faltered occasionally between courses. I highly recommend this place provided you're in the mood to spend over $100 for two people without alcohol.
This is one of our favorite restaurants in the East Bay. The food is fresh, delicious and interesting and the service is excellent. We've celebrated an anniversary and two birthdays there. A perfect place for a special occasion.
My favorite restaurant in Oakland, I go there at least once a month, I always enjoy their creative menu, and am never disappointed
Excellent food in a favorite neighborhood spot. Spring greens with plums tasted great, although looked rather wilted. Calamari and ricotta agnolotti starters were both on the small side but outstanding. Salmon entree very tasty. We’re always happy to go to Homestead.
Whenever my son is in town on a Sunday, we go to the prix fixe Homestead dinner and have always enjoyed ourselves. It's a lovely dinner, with ample food and nice ambiance. Highly recommended!
Lovely place we love to go to for special events. Try the chocolate mousse- delightful!
