Stories - Casual Fine Dining - Halifax
This is a lovely high-end restaurant, but kind of “old-school”. I’m old myself, but a more youthful spirit, and approach to food would be welcomed. There were no vegetarian entrees or vegetable-centric menu items (even after inquiring). The food was delicious, but way heavier than I wanted or needed, the atmosphere is a bit stuffy, and it didn’t need to be.
The high-end restaurant market in Halifax is crowded. Get with the program! The service was fantastic, I might add.
Best place in Halifax. I've been saying it for years and will continue to do so.
Started with the crab cake, which was very fresh and tasty. Then had salmon and Guinea hen. Both were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. Had chocolate mousse-like dessert and berry tart with cassis ice cream. The plating was fabulous and they tasted tasting just as good. Would definitely recommend this restaurant. This was the best we had in Halifax over 10 days.
This place is ranked #1 and, in our opinion deserves it. We were staying at the Halliburton so it was super convenient. We reserved well ahead.
After a review of the menu we found we were more interested in the appetizers so we ordered two each: goat cheese salad, crab cake and scallops (x2). They were all excellent
Our servers were especially interesting because they took the time to explain the composition of each dish.
In addition we had 2 gins and 2 glasses of wine. Total bill with tip was CAD 125.
Best restaurant in Halifax by far
Great food (with portion sizes in line with European fare), friendly and attentive staff with a relaxed and intimate ambience.
My wife and I were celebrating our 8th anniversary. We had a wonderful meal everything was amazing and well presented. The safe were very helpful and well informed about each dish.
I enjoyed the meal and the surroundings but found the menu limited.
From the minute we entered till the time we left we received first class service and the food was exceptional.
With so many choices in Halifax, it is difficult to chose a fine dining restaurant when we visit. We decided to give Stories a go since we had read several reviews. The staff was amazing. They had answers to any questions and when they didn't know, they found out. For our starters we had the goat cheese and the queen crab cake. I have to say crab cakes are usually my go to. I had high expectations and it was bursting with crab. However, the rest of the dish was a bit flat on the flavor side of things. Beautifully presented however. The other starter, the goat cheese was stellar. Beautiful mix of greens, candied nuts and the goat cheese was beautiful and silky. It made us want to source some for ourselves. My partner had the game (bison) and I went with my other fave, seared tuna. The bison was beautifully cooked (rare) and seasoned perfectly with just salt. The meat spoke for itself. My tuna which was rare also was beautifully presented. However, I thought it would be sliced to be presented and was not. therefore, a bit difficult to slice with only a butter knife. I felt there was an overpowering basil flavor to the tuna that was a bit off putting. Still, it was cooked perfectly. The resto is perfect for that fine dining experience with intimate setting. Their wine selections is definitely top notch. The wait staff are lovely and professional without being too stuffy.
Great service, good food. The carpaccio and the berry tart my husband had for dessert were the highlight of the meal. Dora provided great service and knowledgeable about food. We will go again, main courses not outstanding but good.
Girls night out
Great food, quiet romantic ambiance, and fantastic service. It was a wonderful experience.
Service and atmosphere was exceptional. Very relaxing and enjoyable dining experience. The food was not as good as I expected. It was good high quality food, but the taste was nothing special. I was impressed by the service but the food was not particularly impressive. I had the tart for dessert which was very good, however.
We had a fabulous evening at Stories last Friday night. I think it was the best dinner out we have had in a long time, not just within the city, but ever! Outstanding flavours and presentation. We are telling all of our friends! Stories is definitely a hidden gem in the city. Great service, (we loved our server from Coldbrook), lovely atmosphere, and fantastic food. We will be back.
We enjoyed the dinner at Stories that evening. In the reservation[n, I had indicated that we would be celebrating a birthday for my partner and that we required a very quiet table.
Our table location was excellent, as there were no other guests in the 4 table room. So we were able to converse without a lot of background noise.
In the review card left on the table, I indicated that the server should have offered some special treat-maybe a small glass of champagne or a free dessert, considering the special occasion. At most, fine dining locations in Halifax, this is a standard practice.
The food, service and ambiance were excellent, but the lack of special recognition of the birthday celebration was disappointing.
Located in a historic home, featuring small rooms and elegant atmosphere. The food here was excellent and beautifully plated, but was almost overshadowed by the exceptional service. If you prefer a quiet and more refined dining experience you won't be disappointed.
Ambiance of a private venue, réception was low key and efficient , cocktail in the library was relaxing but nothing will beat the delicious and inventive food! We had the caribou carpaccio and smoked duck and rillettes as entrée, salmon and deer loin for mains! Expertly prepared and cooked; the smoked duck breast was divine just perfectly balanced , the carpaccio was excellent and the deer was tasty and tender and the side wild boar Shepperd pie was cute and tasty , the Faroe Islands salmon was delicious! Well done ! Ambiance is great you can talk without shouting at each other, the portions are perfectly sized to enable you to enjoy 3 courses without being stuffed! Staff is efficient and almost invisible! Really the best of everything!
no prosecco but they comped us on the wine for dinner. wow. excellent food and service
This is a terrific restaurant in Halifax. It is quieter than most and a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The food is very good, good wine list with fair pricing. You do not feel rushed in this place! A nice alternative to the hustle and bustle!
Great food, wonderful service and all in a beautiful place!
The food was great. Beef carpacio was the star for starters.
Service is great and they have a nice wine list.
Quiet, traditional environment. Attentive service, very good food from a limited menu. Portions are small, so you can indulge in an appetizer and dessert. Fairly expensive.
Great experience at Stories. The tuna was amazing and I am told the duck is the best. The service was too notch and the private dining room felt so indulgent. Will be back.
The food was very good and with the starter, a carpaccio even terrific. I would think, that a ‚fine dining‘ venue should offer a bit more in terms of amuse bouche. The only thing offered except for the courses ordered was bread.
We enjoyed this cozy restaurant, service was friendly and outstanding.
Quaint quiet restaurant with excellent food and great service
This dining experience was memorable. The wine list was extensive and the service was friendly and prompt. The server was attentive without being overbearing and helpful with the menu choices. Portion sizes were expected, given the cost of the meal. The goat cheese salad with mixed greens was beautifully presented and tasty. The duck magret with accompaniments was divine as was the berry tart. I would readily recommend this to others.
Superior service and food. In particular, top marks for the Caribou carpaccio.
Maybe the best restaurant in Halifax
Excellent entrees, wonderful service and great atmosphere
We wanted a "fancier" place to dine to celebrate by husband's retirement. We were four adults. Atmosphere was a little quieter than I expected--but very pleasant. They need a bit of air conditioning.
We found it a little warm. Service was pleasant and timely. Food was delicious and presentation was
5-star. We all tried something that we had not had before. I highly recommend the Guiny Hen wrapped in Stressa. I've not tasted anything like it before. My taste buds sang! If I had to make any form of suggestion, it would be, a little light background music and a bit of air movement. Prices are a tad high, but you pay for quality. We thoroughly enjoyed our supper. Many thanks. Christina B.
I was looking for the best. My long-time friends from Halifax had nver been there. Excellent food, well prepared. Not cheap but reasonable for the quality. Small menu. Good range of wines. We were not disappointed!
Limited selection, however, interesting choices, beautifully prepared and presented. Excellent wait staff, polite, friendly, efficient, and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended.
Not innovative as advertised
Not intimate as advertised, small room requires low conversation levels by all patrons, one group of 4 was not informed of such a requirement
Wine list , especially by the glass , boring and supermarket quality
Thank you very.
We had a marvelous evening. The food was delicious.
We had a perfect dinner. The food both looked and tasted amazing. My husband and I both enjoyed our main course with an excellent bottle of wine. I would recommend Stories to anyone looking for a quiet, intimate spot in Halifax.
The staff were beyond wonderful, they went out of their way to make sure our dinner was perfect, and the food was amazing. This is certainly one of the best restaurant I’ve had the pleasure of visiting.
Limited menu but quality, presentation and taste were very good.
We tried two appetizers (charcuterie - was ok & the crab cake - amazing) two mains (steak - average & duck - incredible, probably the best I’ve eaten), along with the berry tarte for dessert (ok but nothing to write home about).
Atmosphere was quiet & intimate. Would definitely go again to try the remaining items on the menu.
We had a lovely experience from the beginning to the end of the evening, commencing with a warm welcome. The service and ambience is excellent but it is the food which excels. The menu is relatively short - a good situation in our book, and the flavour and texture combinations were brilliant - this is a chef and kitchen which knows its craft.
The wine list is interesting too.
This is a great place to dine - we just wish it was closer to home!
The food is excellent. The ambient is nice and cozy. Service is good and friendly. My only observation is, people serving places like this should have a very high level of professionalism and knowledge. We enjoyed the friendly service but noted lack of professionalism. Food was better quality than service. Other than that we had a fantastic experience.
Oh, one thing. Decoration sometimes needs to be carefully reviewed. The ambient recalls a vintage oldie very well kept architecture. However that coffee maker on the waiting room totally destroys the decoration. It is a nice device but completely out of place.
We loved the place and we will come back again for sure. Highly recommended to all our friends.
