Always kind of quirky when you go . . . kind of like you don't belong. This being said, they have some of the better German food around (so difficult to find good examples of this cuisine in Chicago).
We were very pleased to find such excellent and authentic German cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Service was excellent and friendly. We truly enjoyed this experience.
It was an extremely hot evening and just after our food arrived, my wife asked if the air conditioning could be turned up a bit. Although our waitress tried, she was met with a blank "No" from the bartender (in charge of the A/C, I assume).
That, plus the overly loud accordian player, (and I get that people go there for the music, it was just too loud from my point of view) meant that we asked for our food to be boxed up and we left. I swear it felt more comfortable in the 90 degree heat outside.
Our server was not attentive. It was extremely busy that evening which could have been the issue, however she did not check on us once we ordered. I had to ask the busboy to find her to order a beer and also for the check.
The level of noise was terrible. It was very difficult to carry on a conversation.
Having said this, the food was amazing and I will return and continue to recommend Himmel's.
Wonderful service, friendly wait staff, friendly environment for small children and delicious food!
Great German food! I’ll be returning. The pizza is quite delicious as well and not your run of the mill standard offerings
Outstanding Schnitzel ! I wish the two sisters would reopen the Brauhaus !
Dinner was wonderful and our server was very knowledgeable and guided us through the menu. It was a bit difficult to understand.
We go here for the pizza and the schnitzel, which were great as always but today the service was less than ideal. The waitress was either new or very unsure of herself and unfamiliar with the promotional schnitzel-fest menu that was in place this day.
The food is fabulous. I really love the potato pancake appetizer. My steak was cooked perfectly. My husband had the pork tenderloin in cream sauce and loved it. Plenty of food. Large portions. Will definitely return
We always come out of Himmel's satisfied. Great food, wonderful drinks and fabulous staff. I recommend Himmel's to everyone!
Good food, German atmosphere,friendly service
Celebrated a birthday. Great food. Great service. Fun atmosphere. They even worked with me and let me drop off a cake early to set up the surprise. Will definitely be back.
Fantastic and kitsch. Food was traditional German and great.
It was my mom’s birthday and I wanted to treat her to dinner. It was a great experience; the food was delicious and the staff helped me set up a nice birthday dessert and asked the musicians to play happy birthday. The whole place sang and my mom was so happy!
My favorite place to chill out Friday night: good food, great music.
Great spot for German food and atmosphere. We had a wonderful meal and loved the live music.
We are frequent diners at Himmel's. Food is always excellent and portions are more than generous. Service is inconsistent and busy times make it worse. The best time to go is for an early dinner to get the best service. The owners are really friendly and will always greet you or walk to your table to check on you when they are there.
We went for my husband’s bday. Service and food were great!
Himmel's was fantastic. The food was superb. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed dancing to the accordion player.
The food was great alone with the atmosphere and service was great ,friendly and a welcome feeling as soon as we walked in.we will be back enjoyed the evening thank you
Excellent food and drink. But, on a windy day, the smoke from the ovens wafts thru the seating area. All 4 of us left smelling like smoke.
Yeh dinner was great until they ran out of strudel !!!’ Who runs out of strudels at 7pm in a Saturday night ?
The food was fantastic (vegetables could have been cooked a little longer) but the service was horrible. The server forgot about us after dropping off our drinks and it took about 25 min before we finally asked the busser to get her for us. It is a small restaurant and we could see her going in and out of the kitchen with nothing in her hands and chatting with the bartender. Then when the food came, I got the chicken spaetzle and I was turning my plate because the chicken was hanging off the edge, the server without asking reaches down and spins the plate back around getting grease all over my silk top (still cannot get the stain out). She checked on us once and we had to ask the busser for boxes. She then came to our table and asked us how we were, we asked for the check and she didn't even have it on her even though she could see the boxes on our table. If we ever go back I will definitely make sure we do not get that server again.
We had a large party is 8 and made our reservation ahead of time. Our reservation was for a Saturday night and it was very busy. However, I would argue that were slightly under staffed. The host/waitress struggled to find menus for all of us and we didn't even get water for 10-15 mins. Make sure you ask the server about the menu before ordering if there's something you are interested in but haven't tried before.
Outstanding food. Outstanding service. Excellent menu. We will definitely go back.
Portion size of the chicken schnitzel was huge and delicious. The kasespetzle was smaller but the taste was great. Definitely would recommend to friends.
Excellent food!!! I love the service, ambience, fantastic experience Definitely I am going back!!!
It is really a place where they have extraordinary food and a very friendly staff and very good beers
Food and service were excellent. My husband ordered a martini and when it came to the table it was the smallest martini glass we have ever seen. Even the waitress was freaked out at how small it was. Two sips and the martini was gone. They need to get much bigger martini glasses. This and the parking situation is the only downfall.
Himmel's is a family run establishment that makes you feel like you are family. The decor is German/Bavarian and some night they have live accordion music, other night they have a fantastic guitarist. The food is prepared fresh to order. Nothing comes to your table looking or tasting like it was prepared earlier and then heated up.
The schnitzels are absolutely wonderful (my favorite is the chicken) and the sides compliment the dishes.
Once you have experienced the place, you will want to return.
Added bonus: The cocktails are perfect every time, and the beer selection is good.
Food was delicious! We had the chicken schnitzel and pork shank. Both were great.
What a fabulous experience! Great food for the price, excellent service, wonderful ambiance. I absolutely recommend the wurst.
Been here before and it was great. This time waited 1 hr and 41 min for food. Then it was cold and the server was so rude
The duck was soggy, food was cold, schnitzel tasted metallic, server paid attention to massive party rather than us, the bar ran out of Maker’s Mark and literally had no other bourbon. Lousy lousy food
Food wa excellent ad well as the service.
Great German Restaurant - where German people go to eat!
Great meal, Schnitzel, Tuna, Sausage Plate to Pizza, everyone was happy.
The music was quite loud, and does not need amplification in that small room.
It made conversing extremely difficult.
The food and atmosphere are really authentic. Amazing value, large quantities of food, delicious!
