Booked for New Year's Eve which is also my partner' birthday which usually gets lost in NYE celebrations. Fabulous meal; well worth the £60 per head NYE dinner price. Everything perfectly cooked and delicious. Special mention to the guy who looked after us - brilliant service. Warm, friendly, welcoming, attentive with excellent instincts for timing etc. You can't teach that!!
We spent New Years eve at River Cottage Canteen and had a wonderful evening. The 5 course set menu was fantastic and great value at £60 a head which included a glass of fizz and nibbles on arrival. The service was excellent with a relaxed atmosphere with excellently cooked food.
My only gripe is that when they called to confirm the booking, we were told they had got a late license to 12.30 as it was New Years Eve. However, the staff made it very clear on the night that they were keen to get rid of us, so we left around 11pm.
Other than that, it was a great night!
Enjoyable but nothing special. Limited lunch choice. Beer was good! Surprised by portion size of bread and variety as they sell different types.
Would I go back? Probably not as disappointed- probably more my expectations not met. Expected better.
Absolutely aweso food. Possibly the best meal i have ever had. The salted caramel truffles were, as my son said, 'life changing'! only wish i lived closer so i could go more often but given i have waited about 5 years to eat there it was most definite worth the wait!!
Lovely food if a little too salty for my taste.
However the presentation and seasonality of the produce could not be faulted.
Exceptionally friendly waitress!
Wonderful food - delicate flavours, first class ingredients, a truly hygge experience!
We were looking forward to finally going to sample the food at this famous restaurant but it was hugely disappointing. Very basic and bland food although it looked very homely and hearty. The plaice was swimming in butter and I couldn't taste the fish. Very little in the way of herbs or flavours to bring out the best in the meat. The shed at the back has no atmosphere whatsoever and we could have experienced the same at our local farm cafe. At the front though it was a little more cosy with music playing and it was a shame we couldn't eat there. I do get 'the concept' but perhaps it's out dated now or someone took over and are skimping on flavoursome ingredients. It just wasn't up to the standard we have experienced in other 'rustic local-produce' type eateries and am not planning to go back or recommend to others.
Booking wasn´t registred that evening eventhough I had confirmations.
My guests vegetarian option was satisfying - but honestly I was a bit disappointed with the fish and chips-version.
All very good. Thanks for a lovely evening. We very much enjoyed our visit.
just went for a quick simple lunch and it met our expectations.
appetisers we ordered were especially nice but a little overpriced for the quantity of pitta and bread we received.
Sunday roast with friends following a weekend on the Jurassic coast. We adore Hugh F-W, but alas the food was ok but not great. Go for the roast beef (the chicken and bread sauce weren't the best, and the plaice over cooked), plus skip the starters. Lovely staff.
Really enjoyed our evening. Great seasonal food, beautifuuly cooked and really tasty. Kind of comfort food meets fine dining. We loved it as it was a hearty meal. Would definitely recommend as a treat. Hope to return some day. :-)
Excellent food and drink, friendly and keen staff, lots of choice, value for money
Interesting menu and good potential - poor execution of dishes and lack of attention to detail - I suspect Hugh FW would be very disappointed.
The food was good although the Yorkshire puddings were hard and crispy and cold and the desserts were not great but we really enjoyed the place
Having spent a day cooking at River Cottage HQ I figured it would be good to see how the experts did it...and they do it pretty good! Food was fresh, seasonal, well prepared and of a decent portion size. Some clever twists on traditional favourites - bay and honey panacotta....WOW!! Will definitely be going back and will probably try the other branches when I'm in those areas.
Brilliant! EXCELLENT value for money - might have expected silly prices because of the association with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, but no, very reasonable and absolutelt delicious food. Would definitely recommend a visit, especially as we also got 10% off with cookery course bookings at River Cottage HQ.
Oh dear! We came specially to Axminster for this. I ordered what should have been a delicious tart with potatoes and salad.
The problem was that both tart and potatoes were lukewarm and that the tart was all dried up as though it had once or twice been hot but was now just thirsty. I sent it back and they then served the same dish in the same condition to the adjacent table who also sent it back.
Although they were aware of the unsatisfactory state of the dish, it did not stop them continuing to serve it. Very cynical and disrespectful.
A big disappointment in what is arguably one of the flagship locations for River Cottage.
We are big Hugh fans, love his style of cooking and have many River Cottage books, so were looking forward to our lunch. The menu looked good with some interesting and tasty sounding combinations. However, I sent my dish back as the quiche was crispy and obviously had been sat around for some time and just about warm rather than hot, the potatoes were unseasoned and cold. Even the plates that our food was served on were cold....basic stuff.
I copied what my wife had which was a butternut squash dish with beans, which was bland again unseasoned and very forgettable.
Come on river Cottage shape up, you can do better than this. If nothing else get your deli merchandised properly so it looks good when your customers walk in rather than a half empty after thought.
Lovely meal with fresh seasonal ingredients, friendly service and great live band.
Great food with great friends. Started with Elderflower prosseco, sardines and a blue vinny veg tart. Finished off with the caramel truffles, coffee and cider brandy. Yum
We were able to get a booking at the time that suited us and were seated earlier than our booked time. The server was very pleasant and took our order efficiently.
As it was a lunchtime booking, we were not wanting a big meal. The shared starter could have had more bread to be able to finish the hummus. The homemade bread was delicious with the celeriac soup. The serving of the rare beef was not value for money.
River cottage HQ fully booked so we opted for the canteen as it was nearby. Lovely atmosphere and food was exceptional. Our waitress, Rachael, was attentive throughout and ensure we had everything we needed. Will definitely return
The food was very tasty Sunday roasts and plentiful veg. However the desserts were a complete rip off the the chocolate brownie with dollop of icecream was in no way a chocolate 'nemesis'. It left a sour taste at the end of a nice meal.
Decided to visit River Cottage Canteen on a weekend break in Dorset to celebrate a special occasion, but sadly the meal and restaurant fell short of our expectations. Firstly the restaurant was pretty cold inside. We were advised this was a temporary problem, and to be honest it is a large volume of space to heat on a cold night, so fair enough. Secondly the service was a bit half-hearted and slightly unprofessional, but this was apparently due to staffing problems, so possibly also a temporary issue. Thirdly the food was average quality, nothing special, and a bit overpriced in our opinion. Lastly, there was a communication breakdown and they forgot we had ordered starters and brought our main course out before we had our starter. It was a shame and we left feeling disappointed overall. However the manager was very apologetic when we complained, and dealt with our meal problems in a very commendable way.
disappointed to find most of the restaurant closed. Stuck at the front area which lacks atmosphere. Food was however very good and EPA beer great
We ate at River Cottage Canteen twice during this week whilst on holiday. The first time the food was good although our first choices on the menu had already run out at 7.45pm. But we booked to come again for our final night as overall we were satisfied. We were shocked at the drop in standard of food and ambience. The restaurant was cold and the food was bland and unseasoned. I could not eat most of my main course which was overcooked and tasteless. My partner's fish was not apparently gutted at all - i understand about the restaurants policy of cooking the fish with the roe still inside, but it was also full of brown, bitter entrails. I don't think we would eat here again.
The service was friendly and efficient on both occasions.
Unpretentious yet outstanding food and friendly / helpful staff. Will visit again when in the area.
The experience was very good. Even better as the bill was paid for from a birthday gift voucher which allowed us to take some friends with us. All the staff were very attentive & any request was dealt with promptly & pleasantly & without question. The main meal we found was a little on the large size & could not send back a clean plate, a slightly smaller portion would have been better. Overall a very good experience.
Once again not disappointed! Even though the main restaurant was being renovated, the food was excellent as normal, staff excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed yet another visit 😊 see you again soon.
Great evening very well done well worth a trip from
Incredible food in a lovely setting, with helpful and considerate staff.
Would definatley go again
First time at River Cottage and what a great experience to mark a special occasion. Fantastic food and great service at the Axminster Canteen - we'll definitely be back but hoping Hugh will open a restaurant in Cardiff which we would definitely visit regularly...
Very tasty food although the bread accompanying the soup was a bit tasteless.
Long time fans of River Cottage from Melbourne Australia, this was on my list of places I wanted to visit. The food did not disappoint! We thought the prices were very reasonable for such good food and great wine.
We enjoyed a very nice lunch. The menu was good and I think all food and drinks are locally sourced where possible. I would recommend this restaurant to friends. Staff were very attentive but not intruding. The chef was pretty yummy too !!!
We had been staying at Lyme Regis for two days to have a gastro holiday. Having had two really good dinners in Lyme we headed home via River Cottage and were very disappointed. The service was good but the food poor. I had a bowl of soup which was OK but my husband had the duck confit - the skin was very fatty and the meat tough - he left it but was not given anything off the bill although complained it was unedible.
The restaurant we felt could do with a facelift. Perhaps we got a bad day?
While the main courses were ok, we ordered side dishes of chips which we all thought were below standard & the dregs of the frier.
We felt there were not enough staff, but they were very helpful.
The music was rather intrusive.
Fantastic food, great service and a lovely atmosphere- highly recommended.
We love coming to the River Cottage Canteen for lunch. It's a good pit stop on the way to the beach but we'd come anyway as the food is fabulous, the atmosphere extremely good and - especially on this occasion - the waiting staff are very attentive and friendly. The maple syrup and walnut ice-cream is to die for, and the mackerel pate is gorgeous. I was hoping to find some in the deli to take home but not to be.I also had celeriac soup which was rich and very warming. You know a place is good when, as each course arrives, the people at other tables lean across going 'ooooh!' As do we!! The only thing I would prefer is to have the piped music a little softer - or not at all, but that's just my preference
