Always enjoy the food, drinks and staff everytime we go.
Low key place for a weekday evening dinner date. Solid food and friendly/chatty yet unobtrusive servers. Good spirit from front and back of house staff.
Delicious! Appreciate the delicious southern food in the TL!
Rusty owns the joint. And he and his wife both work there. They are super nice, and the good is amazing. Do yourself a favor and go there...
Rusty greeted us and the atmosphere was very friendly. Food was delicious. Biscuits to die for and the pepper jelly was special. The fried chicken was done to perfection. Generous portions and no kids menu, so in retrospect would have been good to have kids share. Not a "family place" per se but we felt welcomed and it was a great place.
We went to Rusty's on a Saturday evening before attending an event nearby. We chose it based on the location and also because we wanted to try something new. The ambiance is nice enough, wooden tables, countryside feel. We were given the choice of sitting at the front bar or in the back dining room. The dining room is nicer and warmer, further away from the door. Our waiter seemed to be distracted, but it was also quite loud in there at times so perhaps he just didn't hear me. He did comp my drink because he never got it right. We ordered some beer and sweet iced tea, both good. The iced tea includes free refills. My BBQ pulled pork was quite spicy, I only managed half of the portion served. The sauces offered were also spicy - don't order the BBQ unless you like it spicy. Hush puppies okay, nothing special. My partner ordered the shrimp and grits dish which was quite tasty. My favourite part of the meal was the dessert - buttermilk pie with sweet cream. Very nice. I'm glad we tried it but overall were unimpressed. Maybe the other dishes are better or maybe Southern cuisine is just not for me.
I had a wonderful dinner at Rusty's Southern on Thursday evening. It really exceeded my expectations. Being a "Southern Boy" and growing up with great southern cooking, I had been highly anticipating this meal. I travel to San Francisco frequently but had never been able to break away.
Rusty, Cody Olson and their staff were terrific. I loved the decor, atmosphere and the music selection. The other patrons were also varied, interesting and appreciative of the great food.
We had a wonderful sampling of their full menu: Country Board Sampler, Buttermilk Biscuits with Pepper Jelly, Craft Beer (IPA), Barbecue Plate (loved the vinegar based slaw), Fried Chicken and Peach Cobbler! Say no more...
Being a native of Salisbury, NC - I said, the only thing that could make this meal better would be an ice-cold Cheerwine (soft drink). Cody reached behind the bar and presented me with a 12 ounce glass bottle of the Cheerwine nectar which I love so much.
My experience at Rusty's Southern will be a night to remember. Moving forward, it will be a standard stop for me each trip to San Francisco.
I highly recommend all of my friends, especially those that work on the Stagecoach, and you know who you are, to stop of by!
Food was amazing. I had the chicken...crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Perfection! And the next day it was still crispy after being reheated in a microwave. Order the Ginger Ale...it has a serious kick. Will definitely eat here again.
The restaurant was really cute, clean! Service was good, appetizers were outstanding. The fish was a little under cooked, and I had shrimp and grits - the shrimp and grits were good but the tomatoe sauce was a little strange. It was a good birthday dinner over all.
Excellent "real" southern food- I was sorry I was only with 2 other people because there were too many things to try
The food was below average - there was no flavor, the fried chicken was unappetizing. The breading completely fell off the chicken and the chicken was not at all seasoned. Would not recommend this restaurant.
Salty gumbo- has 2 spoonful but couldn't eat it!
Fried chicken was ok. The skin was nice and crispy though
Best dish was Mac and cheese
When we told him about the salty gumbo, he looked at us and said, "ok, I'll tell the chef." No apology , offer to replace dish or take it off our bill.
Super nice folks. Great food and beer options!
Are waiter was clueless he made us feel uncomfortable. He asked us what we wanted to drink and my wife asked for a water so he started walking away without letting me or our friend order a drink. Unfortunately that was the best I can say about our server.
The first, genuine, super tasty Carolina style BBQ I have found after over living in the Bay Area for over 10 years! This is the real deal - super tasty - so definitely go! Now!
Solid food at a good value. It seems like someone is making the food that they care about and it shows. Service staff is super friendly and efficient.
I've been loving this place for lunch/brunch for a while. The chicken biscuit and pork biscuit are the best, and you can substitute collards for the spring mix salad. The grits are only ok.
The french press coffee service does not work well. It gets cold too soon and not good for refills. Also , I prefer dark roast coffee and theirs is not. It was not strong enough for me.
Don't let the location throw you off, this place is very nice. The food and service were excellent, I highly recommend getting biscuits to share as an appetizer. The shrimp gumbo was awesome, as was the fried chicken.
This being a southern comfort food menu, do not go here if you are in a rush. The food can take a little time to prepare but once it got to the table it was worth every minute.
Second time there and introduced a friend to the friendliness & deliciousness that is Rusty's. This time around I tried the burger. SO GOOD. Accompanying this was a pile of tasting seasoned fries. Memorable meal indeed. This neighborhood gem is a keeper!
We love Rusty and his entire crew, almost as much as we love Rusty's food. Everything is so scrumptious that we have to tell each other to slow down while we eat. Our #1 SF restaurant for brunch or dinner. AND they take reservations!
I just love this place. The food is gorgeous, thoughtfully created and delish. I have cravings for the fried chicken. The fact that Rusty and the chef spent time with us to explain the food, how it is prepared and why it is on the menu, was fantastic. This place is super.
Split the fried chicken and BBQ plate. Both were delicious. Don't remember our server's name but he was well informed, friendly, patient and attentive. Wish they had a liquor license so I could've wet my whistle with a bourbon before the mean but the IPA on tap did the trick.
And on the way out, the bartender (Rusty) thanked us for coming and somehow remembered that I had sunglasses when I walked in and made sure I didn't leave them behind when I headed out after sunset. It's the little things...
Delicious Southern food, and very friendly, attentive, service.
Menu was interesting. Peanuts were a nice touch
Saw it on the michelin guide as a nice place, if you where in the neighboor hood - And if you are in that part of San Fran I guess its considered the best quality(bad part of town) - The food was okay, nothing out of the ordinary, but definitely quality and fair value for money. Nice vibe to the place and service is good and heartly. Would defendly go again if in the neighbourhood, but not worth a trip if you are in San Fran an can move freely around.
Maybe I expected more due to Michelin mention:-)
Rusty's Southern offers delicious southern-style cuisine in a cozy, charming and simply elegant space nestled in the heart of San Francisco's gritty, challenging Tenderloin District. My friend's Double-Cut Pork Chop was moist and delicious; my fried chicken was succulent and flavorful, even if the skin was a bit too crunchy. Collard greens were perfect and caramelized carrots were devine. Service is very friendly and attentive. It's a special experience all around.
Excellent food, reasonable prices
I was a little concerned when our Uber driver pulled up to the address, I'm sorry to admit. The neighborhood is still a little sketchy, but this place is fantastic! It's not over crowded with tables so you share your dinner conversation with your neighbors, the food is so tasty, and the service was noteworthy. We had the fried chicken and pork chops and we will definitely be back! I wish they had a full bar, but their beer and wine menu was sufficient! The chief came out and asked if our food was to our liking...LOVE!
The shrimp and grits was super delicious and the beer list is excellent!
Amazing good and wonderful, personal service with soul!
Rusty's is firing on all cylinders!! Everything from their space to their service to their food is awesome! Adorable space where you don't have to yell at the person 6inches from you. Friendly staff that knows how to have a friendly engaging customer exchange. And their brunch?! WOW. I've been twice with friends and have now tried every menu item. Cannot possibly choose s favorite-- They nail the flavors in each dish. Perfectly poached eggs, yummy mimosas & good people!
We were excited to try this as my husband loves southern food! All 4 of us thought the food was only OK. None of us really liked our entrees, but the Mac and cheese we shared was out of this world. Overall, the service was great and our server was top notch. Sadly, we expected more from a Michellan starred chef.
they were super accommodating in regards to adding people to my reservation. I called a few times to add more people and they were great about it. It's hard to find a brunch place that takes group reservations, I'd recommend for group brunches for sure.
Rusty's is the real deal when it comes to southern food and southern hospitality. So glad that business was booming when we were there this time. Well, well-deserved. The Huz and I and another couple went. The women had country breakfast. The Huz had the pig grits, and the other guy had the fried chicken sandwich. The scrambled eggs and were fluffy and plenty, and the cubed and crispy breakfast potatoes were delicious. My Huz also ate 1 piece fat, yummy bacon off my plate, the sausage and the griddle cake that came with it, as did the other guy off his wife's plate. Well, other guy didn't get the griddle cake -- his wife was too fast for him. We cannot wait to stop by for dinner. Shrimp and grits and YES PLEASE.
Delicious southern fare. We had a wonderful time. I am from the south and was craving some good southern "comfort" food. Service and ambiance also were great
I've eaten in the restaurant before, though this time my friend came in first and sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and kindly accommodated my request for tea.
The ambience is so romantic and relaxed. The music is great - a mix of low key and semi-upbeat blues and jazz. The lighting is perfect and low key. Such a gem; glad I found this place.
Completely hidden gem in the Tenderloin. I absolutely LOVE this adorable place!!! Great food and service, and the ambiance is very romantic.
My partner and I have made Rusty's a regular choice since we moved to the TL a year ago. The approach they take to Carolina cooking kicks it up a notch without any sort of effete over-sophistication. They basically start with the basics of the regional style and add some real insight that ensures it's all fresh, thoughtful and consistently delicious. They're one of the reasons the neighborhood is, arguably, becoming a new center for great cooking.
Great casual dining spot. Highly recommended. Quality food at great prices. Extremely friendly and attentive staff, including Rusty himself
