Every location of this chain is basically perfect, San Francisco is no exception
The evening was an eerie experience. I have been to Ruth's Chris dozens of times. It is almost always bustling, noisy, and delicious. This time it was only delicious.
It was Tuesday, 10 March. The corona virus was suspected to be penetrating into the Bay Area. Though still a couple of weeks from being locked down, San Francisco was nearing the precipice, and people were already abandoning its vibrant restaurant scene.
When we arrived at RC, there were only four people at the bar and two deuces occupied in the front dining room. The two of us were shown to a booth in the rear dining room, where we would be the only diners for about half an hour, when a party of two couples was shown in. I have never experienced the dining room to be so quiet. It was a joy, but it was the right thing for the wrong reason.
Dinner was excellent, as usual, and we couldn't remember, except for a few very late dinners there, when the restaurant had allowed us such comfortable conversation. It would be wonderful were it to be so every time we go there, but not for the terrible reason it was that way. Anyway, too-noisy restaurants are omnipresent San Fransisco curse.
The wait staff was truly wonderful, but bore an unmistakable aura of worry. How much longer would they have employment? Would they be able to provide for their families? What might happen to the restaurant and their jobs if the virus' visit were an extended one? Uncertainty was definitely a damper on our night out.
We left an especially generous tip. There were a few more people at the bar, and two more couples in the front dining room when we left. But no more had been seated in the rear dining room.
Among the many, many restaurants in San Francisco there are several that bill themselves as steak houses. Some are OK, some are good, a mere handful rise above the others. We hope they will survive -- all of them -- but we have no idea when we will be able to return.
Been her many times., but today food was not the best all three of our steaks came out wrong the bisque came out soupy snd three small pieces of lobster. The calamari was delicious. I left disappointed with the quality of the steaks hopefully it was just a fluke
NY strip bone in was fantastic. Service was great
Our server, Pricilla was outstanding. Don't get the crab stuffed mushrooms.....no crab, just breadcrumbs....The steaks were the best you will find in San Francisco. The sides were excellent but too large for one diner......share. The potato leek soup was excellent.
All in all a pleasant evening of excellent food and service.
Went to the Ballet. Lovely meal.
We had a wonderful time. Great table and service. The food was unbelievable. The Ribeyes and filets melted in our mouths. The coffee was so delicious and a perfect ending for an excellent night in San Francisco!
Birthday was successful for husband
Excellent service! Food was tasty, served hot and very enjoyable. Liked the dessert and coffee too.
Downside was the baby squealing at high pitches at a nearby table. Actually it hurt my ears over and over...as the squealing went on for at least the first 1/2 hour of our dining experience, until the waiter rushed over with the bill, I assume in an attempt to get them to leave?
The other downside was the family having a video chat on their cell phone with another person; volume on the phone was UP and everyone in the dining room could hear the entire 10 minute conversation about other the party was packing up the house and moving. Great to hear it! NOT...
What happened to "no cell phone use" in classy restaurants?
Anniversary dinner. The staff put Rose Petals on our table. The meal was delicious!
Awesome, food was great as usual.
Good food and good service. Filet Mignon was not exceptionally tender, but good.
Birthday gone awry. Bad service, bad food, slow to respond. We won’t be going back. It was one of my favorite places, Pasadena store fantastic. The store we’ve been to four times now and it’s never been a very nice experience. We’re off to other steak houses.
We appreciate you celebrating with us, but regret hearing your experience was less than perfect. Would you please private message us and share more about your experience? Please include your contact information and phone number. We would welcome the chance to make things right.
This place was an amazing dining experience! I went here to celebrate an anniversary and the staff were so accommodating. They provided exceptional service even when (full disclosure) I made some pretty entitled requests. The food was DELICIOUS! So full of flavor and cooked to perfection. I will certainly come here again. A special thanks to Shawn and Mr. Jessie for ensuring we had an enjoyable night.
Ruth’s Chris always knows how to deliver an exceptional night. Lovely date night with the wife, great food and service. They went above and beyond to make a special night. One of our fave places :-)
Always the best in the City for a great meal!! Service is impeccable as well!
What an amazing time we had with all 11 of us dining together with extremely excellent service. The food was outstanding, the wine selection was brilliant, and we all can't wait until we feast again!
Went for my husbands birthday....not much to write home about. Food was ehhh. Service was very good.
Justin was a great server with a great personality. We had the mushrooms stuffed with crab as an appetizer, these were phenomenal!!! Dinner we had filet minion, lamb chops, and crab. Sides were an assortment of mushrooms, au gratin potatoes, and lobster Mac. Everything was delicious!!
My water had a glob of some filth on the base of the glass. The server replaced it kindly. The replacement glass had a glob of filth on the rim of the glass and my friends water glass has a glob of filth on the side of the glass. I asked a passing employee for help getting the water glasses replaced, and he asked us to wait. That was ok with me. When that employee returned he criticized me for my request for clean glasses and said that it seems like “every time you are here there is an issue or problem”. I was a bit taken aback. I said I don’t want any trouble but I would like to have clean glasses of water. The employee said something else offensive and I stated listen, we have not fined here for years. How would you say that there are issues every time we are here? The employee told me there are notes kept in files on customers at Ruth’s Chris and that he had read the notes they had on me. I said, “Listen, we just want to have a nice dinner and I don’t want to escalate this issue, but I do want clean glasses of water. He excused himself. I went up to the front area and asked to see the manager. After ten minutes the general manager came to talk to me. I relayed the details and complained that it was insulting to be confronted at the table like that. The manager apologized several times. I went for a short walk to get some air. I returned to my guest and we finished our dinner. Later, the employee who had insulted me came to the table and stood over me talking again to me in an offensive manner. It was terrible. I could not even eat the dessert.
Decided to wear my nice wool hat, was told immediately that hats were not allowed in the dining room, ok. I'm ok with that but can you tell why tennis shoes are allowed and not a dress wool hat? What a Circus. Get your rules in order people.
