First off...the food was outstanding. Everything we had was unique and well presented. However our experience was lackluster. Our seating placement, beside the glass doors that lead to the wharf, have the impression that they are trying to squeeze in tables anywhere to maximize occupancy. The plastic top table didn’t fit with out expectations and the floor slopes slightly so the table was uneven. The overhead ice maker at the front was randomly dripping ice and was frequently drawing my attention to the movement. The speed at which food came out gave us little time to linger between courses. We felt rushed right up to the end. As Portland residents we didn’t feel any sense of welcome or comfort. As good as the meal was the overall experience left us with little desire to return.
This was our first time here. We could not get a reservation at Fore Street. This restaurant was excellent. We had the squash soup and the apple endive salad followed by the halibut. They were good size portions, well cooked and absolutely delicious. Atmosphere was beautiful as we were seated by a window overlooking the water.
Another great dinner at Scales, service was a lot slower then normal and the restaurant was half full
We had let then know this was our anniversary dinner, and they gave us a window seat, and had festive little white lights around each window which warmed up the overly giant room with high beamed ceilings and ceiling fans. Having valet parking is a real plus as well as that can be a real challenge down on Commercial St or the wharf.
We totally loved the scallops which they offer in variations over the course of the year. The "2019 autumn" menu offered truly over the top Seared Scallops with Swiss chard, bacon, maitake mushrooms, and sweet potato cream. My starter of pumpkin bisque was amazing as was the selection of raw oysters from 3 different farm locations my partner enjoyed. And they brought out our dessert in photo worthy plating with "Happy Anniversary" swirled around the outside of the large plate in chocolate with a single candle. All together a wonder evening!
My wife and I went this past weekend to celebrate our anniversary and it was one of the best meals that either of us could remember. Everything was absolutely excellent. Our server, Stephanie, did a great job and was available whenever we needed something, without feeling like she was hovering. Every single bite of food that we had was incredible. May not be able to afford to go every weekend, but neither of us can wait for the next opportunity.
Most amazing seafood, great Service and atmosphere.
So good food and service!!
Great meal at Scales this weekend. Food was excellent and the service had a high degree of professionalism, confidence and competence.
Menu could have more selections
Prices are high, portion s are small to tiny,
especially appetizers & for the price!
Terrific meal — excellent service, great wine list, wonderful food. We loved the ambiance and will be back when it doesn’t get dark at 4 pm so we can enjoy the water view.
Excellent service, fabulous food. Everything was delicious.
Everything we hoped it would be! Delicious food!
It is our favorite restaurant! Everything is always amazing!!!! So is the service! What a gem!!!!
Great before a play; early, not crowded & valet parking!
Great experience highly recommend
Fabulous find in Portland, Maine seaport! Great food, service, cocktails and ambiance. A must try!
Great service great food
Excellent as always to take out of town visitors and show what portland has to offer.
First trip to Scales and I see what the hype is all about. It's a very nice location situated between the Maine State Pier and the Custom House Wharf (With free valet parking). The food was phenomenal - we had the Bangs Island mussels, a squash tempura special and local oysters and everything was perfect. Two of us ordered the halibut and the third ordered the swordfish and it was all perfectly executed. The house-made desserts were a perfect ending of the meal.
Our server was very attentive despite the dining room being quite busy. It's not the cheapest place to eat, but the quality of the food and the overall experience makes it worth the slightly elevated prices.
I wish I hadn't waited so long to go here and I can't wait to return.
Best meal I’ve ever had. Favorite restaurant I’ve ever been to!!!
Loved everything about this restaurant! Definitely will be coming back!
We had a terrific dinner at Scales. From the cocktails all the way through to dessert, the food was nearly perfect. The only exception was the special big eye tuna appetizer which was served raw. The tuna was simply beautiful in every way, but it was ruined by the addition of pickled peppers - that flavor overtook all others and so you might have well just been eating a plate of pickled peppers - very disappointing. Otherwise, it was fantastic. We had the shaved kohlrabi salad, which was fantastic - I plan to repeat it at home. For entrees, we had the halibut and scallops - and were informed by the waitress that they were the two best picks on the menu. The scallops were the real star, but the halibut was very good. The halibut was pan seared, which I know from my own forays into cooking it this way, can leave the fish a little dry, which is was. Otherwise, a very nice dish. The chocolate cream pie was simply sublime. It's not at all what your would imagine, a small, very rich dark chocolate "pie" with homemade marshmallows, whipped cream and some decedent salted chocolate cake bark added on. Some of the best bites I've had for dessert! Would highly recommend overall.
Exceptional service and food.
We got a last minute reservation with recommendations to try this place. Two of us while in town for business. We had the seafood soup and scallops. Scallops were recommended by waiter and other individuals and were delish. Soup was good, but didn’t compare to scallops. Dessert after with custard and baked Alaska were suboptimal. Could have omitted dessert. Even though it was late and dark outside, the view from the windows was very pleasurable for our experience.
Let me start by saying that we were not the ideal party! Three folks joined us a little later than anticipated and the last two got tied up trying to figure out a passport issue. The host made an exception and seated us even though the whole party had not arrived, which was incredibly gracious and much appreciated. The last two guests delaying vacillated between coming or not, which made things very difficult for our server. She was wonderful, though! Super professional and patient. The food was incredible and the atmosphere was lively and fun.
Have been big fans of Street and Fore for years. When in Portland we always make them our first choice for dining.
Fantastic to experience Scales for the first time this past weekend. It comes from an outstanding pedigree and doesn’t disappoint in any way.
We enjoyed the short rib pot roast and halibut dishes thoroughly. A chocolate frappe and fruit crisp were excellent finishes.
Will definitely recommend and return.
Scales is my #1 first choice for an impressive restaurant to bring family and friends come to visit.
We will be back!!! Awesome experience!
As always, the drinks, food, and service are outstanding at Scales.
I am 41 and I got carded at the table, and I was the host of the dinner, paying for my family to eat, so that was weird, could be a good thing. The waiter did not spend enough time, he hurried off before I got to order more food a few times, I tried to add something to our order and could never catch him in time. I mentioned it was a birthday on Open Table and there was no notice of a birthday, which is fine, I am just used to premium service when I pay premium prices at similar establishments. I guess I have been spoiled by other experiences where there was little more effort. I think the food was outstanding, the location amazing, and because of the pricing, this is a special occasion only, or special treat kinda place for me.
Great service and delicious seafood! Right on the Portland waterfront!
The food is always extremely good. The service is great too. I had one dish, fried tomatoes that was just okay. If the tomatoes had been served over greens to lighten them up and maybe paired with a bit of sharp cheese. As a starter they were uninspiring. Usually the imagination of the combinations or the plain old great tasting food leaves me with nothing bad to say. So the boring tomatoes didn’t ruin my meal, but they could have used a little help.
Lovely atmosphere. Fresh seafood. A little overpriced. Service was great.
It was a lovely meal, everyone there was friendly, you can see they all enjoy working together. The food and the drinks were excellent. The atmosphere is lovely, the big windows looking out at the boats and the weather outside. I love it there in the winter, to look out at the boats covered with snow and the water, it is perfect.
I had high hopes for Scales given that Fore Street and Street and Company are our two favorite restaurants (with the same owner). However, we were very disappointed in Scales. Our first surprise was that you got charged for bread - whoever heard of such a thing in a high end restaurant? Oysters were great and both soups were very good. Halibut dinner was nice, but the fish sandwich was completely tasteless- even with lemon and salt added. I’ve had better at Burger King. The tiny portion of coleslaw served with the fish tasted old, so I avoided eating it. Apple crisp dessert was good. Bottom line is that the menu is way over-priced and, given the inconsistency of the food quality, we will not be returning.
Great meal and great service
Birthday celebration with good friends. Great food, excellent waiter
Freshest seafood ever. The lobster and scallops were outstanding
Great service, awesome ambience, food was absolutely delicious! What else could you ask for?!
