A friend and I went to Shakewell for brunch based off of a recommendation from another friend. The food was amazing! However, the service wasn't that great. Our waiter forgot to bring sugar after requesting it twice. We also had to request salt and pepper which took forever to receive. I would still recommend having brunch here but realize that the waiter will not be the most attentive.
Energetic is a horrible euphemism for the impossible din. This is my second visit, food is excellent and service also really good. However, even very early mid-week half-empty I left the restaurant hoarse from shouting over the ambient noise. I tried again, won't be back.
Loved the paella, sides and dessert we ordered.
Service was great. It was very loud when we were there - hard to have a conversation.
Will recommend to friends.
Went for brunch and the food is amazing, in particular the chicken and churros! Service was fine - nothing exceptional. Server wasn't sure if they had milk for coffee instead of cream. This remark was despite the fact they offer lattes on the menu??? She sorted it out.
Overall fun atmosphere, inventive, creative food options very well executed.
The food was fantastic - there wasn't a single dish that we didn't love. The service was very attentive, too.
We were a party of 6 adults for a birthday dinner-we were given a nice table towards the back, not too noisy. We came early though, at 5:00, so it wasn't too crowded yet. We LOVED every single dish (7 tapas dishes plus paella), plus a variety of cocktails and amazing desserts. Service was friendly and timely! We would definitely come here again.
SO LOUD in here! Met up with my parents for lunch, who don't have the best hearing and it was hard to have a conversation without shouting. Hats off to the bartender who went through the new cocktail menu with us and recommended some excellent drinks!
- Only 1or 2 true (unmodified omnivore dish) vegan options.
- No main vegan dishes, and no tofu, edamame, beans or lentils offered as a source of added protein for vegans.
- The greens were totally overcooked.
- The paellas cost $32-$38 for 2/3 rice and very little other ingredients. No added protein option available for vegans or vegetarians.
- NOT A RECOMMENDED SPOT FOR VEGANS.
- My omnivore friends loved the food. Overall we had a good time.
Consistently good with a wonderful staff. One of our local favorites!
I would liked it to be a bit more quiet, but we loved it.
We enjoyed our meal here on a relatively uncrowded Saturday evening, which meant that we could hear ourselves talking for at least the first half of our dinner. Started off with a Fairlane cocktail, which blended habanero infused tequila with coconut creme, and a few other things, in an absolutely yummy mix. The falafel was good, as usual, though a tad over done. The duck confit was delicious and a welcome addition to the menu. The halibut entree was cooked just right, and there was a sizable portion of it. Little gems and cucumber salads were very appropriate sides. The only thing a bit disappointing was the prawns with cranberry beans, but only in comparison with all the other dishes. Too full for dessert!
Based on the reviews I expected more. Food was good but not great. Some serving sizes are incredibly small. Service was good. Might be worth a try but we won't go back.
Great food! Attentive staff. No one rushes you. Great brunch spot!
Great experience. Lovely staff.
Sunday brunch selection was outstanding. I always appreciate their use of seasonal produce - today’s salad of little gems, kohlrabi, poached pears, and seasoned hazelnuts was AMAZING. I only wish they could do something about the noise level - having to shout across the table to be heard is a drag and keeps me from coming back more often.
Shakewell is always a joy. Their menu varies sufficiently that one doesn't get bored with the repetition. The wait staff are always pleasant and welcoming.
The server was great and so was the food! We’ll be back!
Still one of the best dinners and drinks out in Oakland. Great vibe and a top pick.
our server was wonderful, but the bar and kitchen were excruciatingly sloooooow for a 5:30 reservation amidst a mostly empty restaurant. 25 mins for cocktails. 45 for our starter, which was notably awful: jamon croquettes. They were like slimy, snotty glue; the most overbeaten potatoes I've ever had the displeasure of putting in my mouth! but the special fish dish for 2 was perfectly cooked and spectacular. as were the plated veggies with it and the side of corn. again, service was great....and stick with the specials!
We really love the food here--very creative, veg and fruit oriented, and tasty. I just wish the place wasn't so CRAZY LOUD.
Lovely 3 course lunch for $20. Perfect amount of food.
Every dish we ordered was excellent and the service was top notch. Portions are generous. We probably could have ordered less, but I got to take home the leftovers. :-)
The only downside is the lack of parking.
We loved everything about Shakewell! We were greeted warmly by the hostess, the servers were all very attentive without hovering, and the food came out a a good pace keeping up with us perfectly. Every flavor was spot on giving us a few pleasant surprises like the mint in the octopus salad, fantastic! There was a nice variety of wine with an unexpected 20% off on bottles on Wednesday night. We will be back and encourage our friends to dine there when they are in the area! The only thing, less than stellar, was the name which made me think of a burger joint and if our friend hadn't know of the restaurant I might have passed by it based on the name...don't make that mistake!
We find the food superior to other nearby restaurants, although it’s about 75% more expensive a meal than some other places. But: portion size has increased.
The fried chicken is amazing. I always get it, and have brought several people here.
Lousy new menu
The service is amazing - super friendly and patient wait staff, and delicious food as always!
I love Shakewell the menu is ever changing which is exciting and the seasonal options are delicious but I do wish for a larger salad option However any foodie will thoroughly enjoy the brunch and dinner 👌🏼
*Excellent* food and very good wines with terrific, professional and friendly service in a stylish setting. The corn dish, felafel, broad beans and vegetarian paella were all delicious, and the waiter was very helpful in directing us to great wines to compliment the food and our tastes.
delicious spot for a light and healthy lunch. Would definitely recommend to friends.
Food was all overcooked and tasteless. Ordered the potatoes, which were practically burnt and extra cdry and hewy (yuck), the fried chicken which was way too dry and overcooked, and the paella, which was also overcooked, dry, and burnt on the edges. I don't get why a chef would ruin such great ingredients to produce such overcooked crap. We left a lot of food on the table, paid $220 (also for a bottle of wine which was 20% off b/c "Wednesday Wine," and vowed never to return. I don't get the hype at all.
Great cocktails, excellent small plates to share. Highly recommend the octopus- perfectly cooked. Also the corn salad. Staff was highly responsible about a gluten allergy we had at the table. Many thanks!
Must have a bomba (paella ) every time we come. Tried the squid ink this time and it’s the new favorite
We really enjoyed the braised pork shoulder. With our salad we enjoyed the cute little Peruvian tomatoes! Our wine choice -the Tempranillo was excellent.
Everything was amazing from the cocktails and wine to the service to the fried stuffed olives, the amazing squid ink paella to the most amazing halibut dish I have ever had!
Getting there and parking was easy and the area is nice. We hit up a few shops and the Cat Bar beforehand and grabbed some goodies from a small bakery down the street to bring home for dessert.
This is my new favorite restaurant. Will definitely be back!
The menu has a varied selection and everything we tasted was delicious. Service was good but the place was very busy for Saturday brunch and they may have been understaffed. We really enjoyed the music but it was a bit too loud, which made conversation difficult. We also liked that the crowd was diverse—all ages, ethnicities, etc. This area of Oakland is charming and we had no trouble finding parking. We will definitely go back—looking forward to trying Shakewell for dinner!
This is one of my favorite restaurants. It's in my neighborhood, the food is great, and the people are friendly and very competent. I enjoy lunch and dinner there regularly and there is plenty that works with my serious lactose intolerance. The lunch specials are the best bargain in town.
The only down side is that it is too noisy at dinner to have meaningful conversation.
Squid ink paella with added sausage and prawns was A plus. Drinks were excellent.
