The calamari appetizer was perfect. So was the entree--chili-crusted chicken. The scalloped potatoes were also outstanding. My only complain was that the green beans were not soft. I like them so soft that you can't feel the fiber. These beans were just like raw green beans that had been heated. I had to cut them with the knife.
We were here for lunch during Coronavirus. Not many people. Owner Tony Tollner was there moving out a few tables, just to make it more comfortable and worry/free. We have been going to Tarpy’s since it opened and through a number of chefs, always consistently good. Their calamari the best in town!!
Service was extremely slow. Appetizer and meal arrived very close together.
You can count on Tarpy's to be consistent menu wise and otherwise. Its a fun place with really decent food. The service this time was outstanding, never bad but not always five star. This time it was. Its a bit noisy sometimes on busy nights and depending on where you sit it can be hard to hear, but just take a break and look around at the beautiful art and quaint building. Been coming here for a couple of decades and guessing that as long as I can I will continue to do so.
Had reservations for a B’day, table had balloons and special dessert !
Outstanding food and service
There are three of us girlfriends who celebrate our birthdays at Tarpys. We never fail to have a great time at Tarpys. Happy hour Is amazing & the food cannot be beat.
As always, the service was fantastic. The food was fantastic. The have something fire everyone ...ribs, steak, fish.
The energy of the restaurant is fantastic and the meatloaf was a highlight along with the Green Apple Martinis and Samatha was very pleasant.
Though I mentioned on the reservation we would be celebrating 2 birthdays we were sat at the wrong table so they brought the balloons on the table next to us over later. Typically there is a candle in sorbet but the waiter forgot.
The steaks were great, one had the sirloin and the other the special. Dessert lemon cheesecake and apple crackle were both hits. The Napa salad was poor and not presented well. Lesson not to try that again
I love Tarpy’s and will return for sure.
Though Tarpy's is for meat lovers, there's usually a decent fish special each night and other options. Food lately tends to be on the spicey side so if you don't want chili powder in your risotto, ask them to go light. We ordered the meatloaf (very good), ribeye (good dish but my sister was sick to her stomach a few hours after dinner; usually this doesn't happen after eating the ribeye), and fish special - filet of sole stuffed with crab (spice in risotto overpowered the delicate sole and crab - note to kitchen, not all palettes want fire). They always are willing to substitute sides like mashed potatoes for roasted potatoes and to put space sauce on the side. Good wine list selection.
Great food and great service.
Nick from Napa is a gem.
Very good and well prepared food. I had never been there before and was made to feel welcome by everyone who attended to me. The hostess came by a couple of times to check on me and helped me decide what to eat. Just a nice pleasant dinner.
The food was good and our server was very nice. The only problem was the rude blonde hostess.
I had booked through OpenTable and because it’s normally just my wife and I, I forgot to change the default guests from 2 to 3 since my mother-in-law was joining us. When we gave her the name and said it was a party of 3, she made a big show of the mistake and had a nasty attitude. She said that we could have a table, but that we would have to be done within an hour and a half because someone else had reserved that table. I asked if we could have a different table and she said that they were completely booked.
A table at a restaurant with a time limit?! Are you kidding me?! Might as well put a little stopwatch at our table while we’re eating! If my mother-in-law hadn’t picked this place as a special treat, I would have just left right then and there and gotten a table without a time limit at literally ANY other restaurant in the world!
The entire time we ate, there were plenty of open tables. We finished well within the time limit this hostess decided to give us and there were still plenty of tables available...
If it weren’t for the very nice waitress, I would have given them ZERO for service. I guess I would come back, but I would just be crossing my fingers that I wouldn’t get the rude blonde hostess again.
An evening with dear friends, great service, and a quiet corner to enhance conversation! Terrific! Many thanks for all!
Go to restaurant. Haven’t been disappointed yet.
Wonderful food and ambiance! Our waiter was the best!
Was completely ignored by all the “Servers” & “Bartenders”. Ended up dining elsewhere, felt racially discriminated.
Great ambience and food!
We live on the central coast and eat at all the best places from Santa Cruz to Monterey. Tarpy’s is # 1 ! They seat you on time right away for your reservation. The food is fantastic, flavorful, and creative. The service is second to none.
Reservation was confirmed with opportunity to express special occasion. Seated prompt. Excellent service and food with ample amount of food. Noise level was a bit high but it was a busy weekend for diners. I would certainly go back again.
Excellent service and our food was prepared and presented well. You could tell farm to table ingredients; very fresh and delicious. Disappointed in wine list. Need to add more choices
Valentines Day. Very nice. Service was excellent and the food delicious.
Valentine’s Day with friends
Went to Tarpy's on Valentine's day. The waitress was excellent and the food was fantastic. I had the ahi tuna with Hess wine it was so wonderful. My boyfriend had the lamb shanks the meat just fell off the bone. I would definitely recommend this place.
Everything was perfect. The food was delicious and the service was very friendly and courteous which made for a very pleasant and enjoyable evening. It was crowded but the noise level was very low that you could hear you and your partner talk to each other without having to raise your voice. I also liked the location. It is not in the middle of Monterey where you don’t have to worry about traffic. I would highly recommend Tarpy’s.
Prices were just a little steep. Knew that going in, but $160 before tip was a little outrageous.
Price will probably keep us from returning.
Tarot’s is still our favorite after all these years — so much better than places that charge twice the price.
Wonderful comfort restaurant with high quality food and service. Very big portions.
the food and service were wonderful as always; I sneaked a private message that we were there for my wife's birthday and they surprised her with a dessert. the specialty salad of the day was enormous and fresh; the apps came right on time.
$ too high for a small (4 oz?) piece of fish.
Lots of noise in dining room.
Took a long time to get main course
LOVED your Sand Dab Salad - nice addition to your specials! Sand Dabs crispy and salad was fresh and not too heavy with dressing - Perfect!
Great brisket sandwich. My top choice for business lunches.
Food was great at as usual (gotta do the meatloaf). Only “negative” on the night was they put us next to a large and LOUD group which kept our waiter a bit more focused on them, then us. Not horrible, just a little slower service than our previous visits. Still worthy of many repeat visits!
