The Star Inn The City
Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. The food speaks for itself and is superb. Would definitely recommend. Just a couple of things missed by waiting staff that shouldn’t have been (e.g.: not being told about specials).
Great food and lovely service. Would certainly recommend here in the future.
Lovely , quirky , charming restaurant with amazing service
We went to celebrate our sons 18th Birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Particular attention was paid to all details which made for a very special time ~ thank you 🙏
Excellent food and excellent service. Some of the tables rather close together, but when we asked to move the staff were most helpful, and gave us a much better table! Anniversary 'platter' a much appreciated touch.
Food tasty but what ever happened to the food? Small portions
This restaurant never disappoints. The food is fantastic as is the service.
Great food, excellent service in a awesome location
We visited The Star Inn for a friends birthday. The staff were outstanding and made our visit feel very personal and special. thanks
Food is lovely, service was a bit disappointing. Our drinks took a while to come and had to ask for our steak knives.
Have recommended to friends and family.
Food is excellent, we had 3 courses with lamb and venison for our main courses.
Serving staff were lovely, very friendly and attentive.
Perfect for a special occasion when you don't mind splashing out.
A warm, friendly welcome on a bitterly cold and wet day.
I enjoyed one of the finest vegetarian main courses of tandoori cauliflower, simply exceptional, washed down with a delicious Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
We had a wonderful lunch, relaxed, yet smart. A convivial atmosphere aided by the excellent waiting staff. Unobtrusive but friendly.
I would recommend the Star Inn the City for both formal and relaxed occasions. Just lovely
Gorgeous food and setting. Fabulous service. Loved every second.
Stunning food, great atmosphere, my fave restaurant in York. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Beautiful food, beautiful place, kind and thoughtful staff.
Amazing setting and great food and very good price for what you get compared to other average places which are no way near as good.
Staff were lovely and welcoming. Excellent service.
Lovely setting. Food very tasty.
That good we returned for breakfast today!!
Not my first visit to the Star but I’m not a regular. It was very good, as I expected it to be. In order for any review make to hit five stars across the board then the experience would have to be something almost unachievable on earth so my review is, as it stands, is about as good as it could be.
I’ll be back
Lovely meal and great service. Very enjoyable.
Valentine's treat for me and my husband. Absolutely perfect . Food amazing, staff very attentive and friendly. We loved it x
Even though the Ouse was in flood, the location was still very attractive on a fine day. Our waiter was excellent and the garden room was really cosy and not too noisy even though it was quite busy.
It goes without saying the food was fabulous if somewhat expensive. Presentation was lovely and the wine selection was ideal.
With its garden patio (no smoking) it will be a lovely location to call for a coffee through the summer months down by the river
Well done you guys
Me and my husband visited for Valentine’s Day and had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The staff were all friendly and attentive and the food was gorgeous. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning - babysitter pending!
My Birthday Celebration was certainly one to remember. Fabulous atmosphere, gorgeous food & wonderful service. Will be returning very soon.
The whole evening was very pleasant. The waitress was extremely attentive, friendly and polite.
I requested a window seat earlier in the day and was very pleased to get one.
We visited for Sunday lunch everything was superb, especially the staff and espresso martinis. Sunday lunch was nice, but roasts barely roasted and plate loaded with red cabbage. Minor point as two generous slices of roast beef and huge yorkshire. Our hearts went out to them following day when the Ouse broke its banks.
Debs was amazing,
If we’re ever in York again, we shall come back!
Best lamb I’ve ever had and catered very nicely to us as my partner is pregnant.
We visited for my mum's birthday and had a wonderful time. Staff were so welcoming and made a fuss of mum, which delighted her. The complimentary 'birthday board' was also a lovely surprise. Food was delicious and, though it was a little noisy, the ambience was comfortable and cosy, like lunch at a friend's house.
My partner was given a ‘birthday dessert’ which was nice. Our server was friendly and helpful, the food was great and all the order came together. Just a really nice evening for the 8 of us.
The food was lovely. The setting was great and the service was perfect.
Good choice of food including set menu (we arrived as one changed to another and they both looked good). Excellent celeriac soup, tasty lamb main (perhaps a little expensive for what it was) but rather bland passion fruit Eton mess which had none of the 'zing' you expect from a passion fruit!
Very pleasant atmosphere with friendly and obliging waitress who immediately noticed that we were eyeing a window table which she changed us to without any problem.
We all agreed that it had been a good choice and would go again.
Great food, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
The meal was excellent as it always is!!! I would recommend The Star to anyone
I needed find a restaurant near the station for lunch as I was dining with a friend who had a train to catch. I decided that, as a treat, I'd book The Star Inn The City. The only positive thing was the young lady who served us when we were at our table.
Generally, the service was lacking and we felt very "processed" rather than "looked after". At one point, while we were sat in the bar the bar area, we were trying to attract the attention of one of the SIX members of staff who were stood by the till area - and we struggled. I'm guessing from his attire, one of the six was a manager.
The food was very mediocre for the price. We shared whitebait as our starter which I'm sure was factory produced as it was too "perfect" to have been made in house. It came on a plate, with a pot of average tasting tomato ketchup...no garnishing. My friend ordered the cauliflower and was only able to eat about 1/3 of it as it was way too sweet. On commenting, our server told us that she should have mixed the chutney at the bottom of the dish with the top of the cauliflower so there wasn't so much chutney left towards the end! We were offered complimentary coffees as recompense. My risotto was "average".
I was embarrassed by the experience having expected to take my friend somewhere special. The bill was £91 and excluding our drinks, I'm guessing around £45 to £50 was the food. This was for three dishes, two of which were well below par. While I'm certainly not averse to paying good money for good food, I left feeling cheated and undervalued.
I appreciate that TSITC has a good reputation and this will have been built by providing great food and a great experience. Our experience was very different and I hope this review leads to some changes. Personally, I won't be returning to see the outcome.
The menu was varied and the service impeccable. All the food we had was very flavourful and made from the freshest ingredients. There was no skimping on the quantities of expensive ingredients, such as the lobster, which was excellent. The ambience, both in the bar and the restaurant, was relaxing with a background buzz of conversation. The position overlooking the river is great and the view across the restaurant and out into the blackness in the evening with lights reflected in the large windows was very pretty. The only complaint was one that I have for many restaurants that have some bench seating, which is that while the person sitting on the bench has the wonderful of the restaurant and to the outside, the person sitting facing the bench (and in this case a solid partition) has only a claustrophobic view. I would recommend visiting The Star Inn the City, but request not to have your back to the view.
We went for Sunday lunch, two of us had the roast and two of us had a main for the a la carte. The a la carte dishes were really great, the roast was good but had a lot of inedible fat on the beef. And by inedible I mean yellow lumps of fat, taking up approx 40% of the “meat” portion. The staff were great when we told them and they replaced the roast dinners with better meat. We’d been previously and had a much better portion of meat, hence why we were more disappointed with the meat served. Desserts were incredible, imaginative and tasty
Cosy venue with a friendly warm atmosphere and attentive serving staff. Good menu and the food was super,
We were recommended this venue by my daughter and were so pleased we booked for a pre-theatre meal.
The menu choices were excellent and the food was delicious. Our waiter was spot on and the atmosphere was perfect.
The lady who looked after us was lovey. We will definitely be coming back.
