We have had many excellent meals at the White Hart but Our dinner on Friday night was very disappointing. This might have been because the restaurant was extremely busy and our booking was at 9pm. But this should not be an excuse. The service as usual was excellent but the food when it came was over cooked, the vegetables tasted as though they had been re heated several times, the steak tough and the chips cold and with tough skins. The fish was tasteless and dry.My son was treating me to the dinner so I didn't want to complain and spoil the evening. Will think twice before re booking to eat here especially as we felt this was. It good value.
Very disappointed that the standard of the food in this one of our favourite pubs has dropped so significantly.
Well I requested a table that was nice and cosy with comfortable chairs and away from a draft for 6 people. The opposite of what I asked. They put us on a long table for 8 people, with one side on a hard uncomfortable bench sloping downwards in a cold corner!
They had no cucumber for the Hendricks. No alternative potato to chips or mustard mash (we requested - boiled potatoes) even tho they originally said sauté potatoes and then returned to say no sauté Time, 7pm.
We ordered sides to come up as a main but came up individually. Even tho we specified it to be a mains. We had to ask for a plate.
Wrong dessert but not to make a fuss, we accepted it.
The ice creams came out on a glass. Without a plate and no decorative wafer or napkins. The ice cream however was very nice.
The young waiter took our orders correct and was very polite and tried his best but everything went wrong from kitchen to table.
The steak I was told , very good. But had to wait for the jugs of complimentary sauce that goes with it.
I asked for a house salad with toasted seeds. It was just green leaves with vinaigrette dressing and shredded pickled onion topped with seeds. Very vinegary.
Over all. It's a lovely place but it's lost it's local charm and warmth. Their unfamiliar, cosmopolitan chill reception and lack of attentive details does not impress me. It's the sort of place you would come across in a city. Not a small town like Somerton!
My pet hate is - lots of pots of sauces and chips In baskets. I just want to see a plate of good cooked food of which I ordered.
I for one am happy to pay for good service and food. But this was over price
The manager has no personality or warmth and took our napkins away before our desserts and before we had finished. She asked at end of meal if ok? A member of our party mentioned everything went a bit belly up but ok in end. She snapped " why was that" we blew it over as it was a celebration evening and didn't want to put a damper on it.
Having stayed at this Boutique pub/hotel on our wedding night, i booked a table for valentines dinner for myself and my husband. Our wedding night and breakfast had been a success, but we hadn't sampled dinner there, so i hoped for the same standard. And it was! The bar staff and waitresses are very friendly and attentive, the food was delicious - great variety on the menu and excellent value for money. The pub/restaurant is cosy, romantic and very country. Thoroughly enjoyed, thank you! x
The staff were friendly and attentive, the service was very good. There was a good menu with plenty of choice. The food was well presented and well prepared. There was a good choice of excellent deserts which were absolutely delicious.
An overall pleasurable experience. We will return.
The best steak and chips! The staff are always so kind and helpful, and do their best to keep up with serving pace at the busiest times.
It was mine and my partner's first time visiting despite being really local. We were really impressed with how the pub has been transformed, the decor was really trendy and attractive yet in keeping with the area.
The food was fantastic, really tasty and we were really impressed with the portion sizes, great value for money! The menu has something for everyone.
Our only critism, is that they seemed very understaffed for a Saturday night. Our food came out quickly, but we were ordering our drinks from our table, and it took nearly 10 minutes for each drinks round to come to our table. No one offered us drinks through out the night, so we were sitting for some time without a drink. Servers were friendly and helpful at our tables, but there did seem to be some disgruntlement between staff, which was noticable to us. When we finished our food, we moved to the bar area, but they were understaffed here too.
We will be returning.
So enjoyed the evening and the food was excellent too. I had the veggie option with the sweet pototo. Absolutely delicious, but I did feel a little hungry afterwards so probably would look for some other veg to come with it.
We visited with my daughter and her boyfriend for a New Year lunch - very comfortable surroundings, with the odd vintage-style lampshade to distinguish it from the ubiquitous wooden table and wooden floor renovated gastro-pub look currently popular - what impressed us most was the quality of the food which was all excellent. Staff were also very pleasant, without being excessively informal, and the wine-list interesting. Service a little slow, but with it being New Years Day and the food this good, we didn't mind waiting. Maybe a little expensive for the area, so an occasional rather than a regular treat, but we plan to return.
We were greeted politely and given menus; served in a timely fashion, (not too soon or had to wait a long time); food was served quickly and it was all excellent - clean plates all round. Some of the main meals are rather expensive but you are probably paying for the decor and comfortable ambiance. The staff were all very professional from our experience that day.
Really attentive staff, great food locally sourced.
We visit the white hart regularly but this is our first visit on sunday lunch, I had the smoked beef which was cooked in the wood oven and it tasted amazing everything on the plate was delicious but not a huge portion for someone with a big appetite although perfect for me. Also had the salted caramel cheesecake, am not normally a dessert person and don't have much of a sweet tooth but dark chocolate salted caramel and homemade honeycombe a combination too delicious to refuse
Stayed at the White Hart for two nights, eating breakfast twice and dinner once. Food was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Would wholeheartedly recommend it!
Over priced food, small portions, pretentious. There are so many other places to eat in this area that are much better value and nicer food. I have eaten better in Prezzo which is a chain restaurant, won't be going back.
We have been to the White Hart a number of times with friends and on each occasion the service and food has been excellent .
The only problem we have is deciding what to eat as the menu has a very good range of foods.
Food not quite up to the the standard that the restaurant aspires to. Starters: Falofel tasty, but accompanying yoghurt plain and boring. Main: Confit of Duck Leg - tough; potato accompanying Trout coloured purple but plain potato flavour and unnessary when chips included anyway.
Lovely place to spend the evening. Gorgeous old building with a lovely atmosphere. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Delicious food. Would definitely recommend to friends.
Good food with a short but varied menu. Young friendly staff. This is an old inn which they have modernised sympathetically retaining character with a contemporary twist. Possibly could give diners a little more space but on fine evenings there are more tables outside.
Very much enjoyed lunch - food and wine were excellent
We were not impressed when dining here with friends a few Saturday evenings ago. Despite being the first table to occupy and order our simple starters took 20 minutes+ to arrive, and our equally straightforward main courses an hour! We did complain quietly and even asked half way through the inordinate delay if it would help the kitchen if we changed our order! A little facetious maybe, but patience was wearing thin! We then made our selection from the menu for dessert to be told that we had been given the wrong menu! Our chocolate dessert had rather soft chewy honeycomb - not the crisp texture we associate with this ingredient.
Despite the foregoing we decided to give it a second chance! Last week - as you know - we booked a lunch table with some relations and once again were first to arrive/occupy a table. For the duration of this visit there was 1 other table in the central section occupied by 4, and 1 or 2 tables in the bar area.
As before, a bit surprised at the bread basket containing just 4 small slices of white bread rather than the usual artisan/granary most offer. Our starters of mackerel pate were incredibly salty (as the ladies on the adjacent table commented!) - somewhat detracting from the flavour. Three of our mains were chicken salads and 1 whole plaice. Once again, our wait for the main course was excessive at half an hour+, and appetites naturally disappearing.
Furthermore, the fish was dry, and we doubt if more than one chicken's breast was used for the 3 of our salads! This was particularly unimpressive when you consider a price in excess of £15 promised more in quantity and quality!
The serving staff were pleasant enough and we can only assume the problems are managerial and chefs.
We enjoyed a very pleasant meal on Saturday night. Although busy, the staff were very friendly and attentive.
Food was very well prepared and presented.
The starter portion was minute and was flavourless, The fish was not cooked enough and the cheese selection was very small and expensive. The service was quite slow with the dinner lasting over 2 hours. Although the hotel is very good the food let it down badly.
Food superb as always, service much improved on previous visit
Having grown up in the area I am aware of a number of good eating establishments to visit. I moved away from the UK and now I visit less frequently, but it was good to note that The White Hart still has it's all round quality. Party of six and no complaints, good veggie option and great service. Good local produce .. A mild grumble , perhaps slightly overpriced and I was surprised as it was quieter there than I had expected.
The staff at the White Hart were extremely friendly and welcoming, and remained attentive throughout the meal. The bread on the table was drizzled in oil and served with olive tapenade which was a very nice touch! My husband and I had a sharing platter for starter and every component was full of flavour. The main was also very tasty with a good portion size and the pudding menu was very varied with something for everyone! Although the bar area of the pub was really busy the tables in the restaurant were well spaced and you didn't feel at all crammed in.
The town of Somerton itself is very pretty and we also stayed in one of the rooms in the pub which was very comfortable and clean with a luxurious bathroom! I would highly recommend a visit to this pub.
Great restaurant with comprehensive menu, but not too big. Freshly cooked and pleasant attentive staff and a delightful location.
Very nice supper, on a quiet evening in July. Unfortunately we had to send one dish back as the fish was burnt, should not have come out of the kitchen like that. Not a problem as waitress resolved this very nicely took the dish back and another came out but not till I had finished my main which sort of spoils the atmosphere. Food very nice and portions a better size than they used to be here. Would go back again but might avoid the fish!
Most of the times i have been to this pub i have been very impressed with both the food and service. Always the extra little touches that justify the slightly increased price. However after having 2 Sunday roasts there I have been slightly disappointed. Roast potatoes (integral to any good roast) were dry, hard and cold on both occasions and no gravy/apple sauce etc was served or offered with any of the meat options. On request they were produced (and a lot of gravy was needed to combat the roasties) but having to make these explicit requests did take something away from the overall dining experience.
We have often visited for evening meals and even Christmas Eve a couple of years ago and the food has always been superb. This was our first visit for sunday lunch and we won't be going again.
Arriving on time, at 2pm, we were seated straight away, Not menus, no offer of drinks. We waited. eight minutes. The waitress then started clearing the neighbouring table , asking them if they wanted dessert. We had to lean across to ask her for menus.
They only just remembered to bring us the signature focaccia bread - that arrived about two minutes before the starter. We weren't offered any water. We had to ask.
My crab stuffed tempura courgette starter was lovely, but my husbands mackerel pate and toast was terrible. Pate spread on a doorstep of toast. Like a childs supper dish. I think we are old enough to be able to spread our own pate and have it on toast that isn't soggy.
We had the roast beef, and the roast fish. The potatoes were very over cooked and outside pretty solid. The insides were so dry, they were inedible. No sauce with the fish, so the whole dish was very dry.
We had ice cream for dessert. That was ok!
We did pass our feelings about the potatoes to the waitress, as they were left on the plate. She passed our comments on to management. The new manageress did come over to say she really valued our comments as the chef was new...... we then mentioned the pate. She said we weren't the first to say this.
That was £65.00 ... we didn't get offered any reduction at all. very disappointing.
Went here again as really love the place which had been spoilt by a previously lukewarm main meal.
We did complain and got free deserts offered, but I went hoping that it wouldn't happen again......it didn't and much to our amazement the chef gave my husband another piece of pork half way through eating as he didn't feel the first was big enough so more than made up for my previous experience. It was my birthday treat so it was a lovely meal and great experience, the food was superb.
Will definitely return
The White Hart is really good, nice atmosphere and lovely surroundings. Food very good for a special meal out. As we live locally I would also like to see simple food as a choice for days when we can't be bothered to cook - but don't want food with quite so many ingredients and calories!
The food was lovely, enjoyed kicking back in the bar after for a drink.
Remove the dining table from the kitchen door, its too busy and disturbing.
I enjoy eating there with friends or husband.
Really good food and excellent service. Not cheap but well worth it for a special occasion. Was on holiday and thought would try Sunday lunch. Glad we did.
This was our third meal at The White Hart, the experience this time was disappointing, the service, whilst good, was extremely slow, we had to wait for a very, very long time for starters and even longer for mains. Two of us had pork chops which were tough and difficult to cut. One expects to wait a bit for meals which are freshly cooked but this was not good. What a shame, as we've enjoyed meals at The White Hart on previous occasions.
A very good example of a country pub that does good food that you can have in a formal area, informal area or just enjoy a drink at the bar. Caterers for all needs - I think.
An attractive building in a very pretty market square helps to enjoy everything that is on offer aswell.
Been here twice, first time lived up to expectations, second time poor.
Visiting on a Thursday , only 2 waitresses on duty, although they were very pleasant and service was good.
Food took a long time to arrive, small portions, ( squid salad only one small piece of squid)
One main meal arrived only warm, which wasn't returned as we were hungry by this time and didn't want to wait further. However it was mentioned later on before ordering sweets, and our deserts were on the house.
The deserts we had were very standard.
This did leave us feeling rather unhappy with eating here.
On the whole not good value.
We stayed at the White Hart whilst visiting our son at school. The room was lovely, full of character with special touches such as wonderful toiletries and a great selection of teas and coffees. The bed was huge and really comfy. We had a lovely evening meal and great breakfast. Great place to stay and lovely staff and atmosphere.
Good attentive service. Dinner menu was a pleasure to read and the food was prpeared, cooked and served very well.
Thank you to the White Hart Team.
Our breakfast the follwing morning served by Jonny was a 'real' breakfast with good ingredients prepared with care.
An althogehter diligent operation.
Great place, DOG FRIENDLY and fantastic unusual vegetarian food. Eating out for me ia atreat - I love cooking and often when I do eat out I think that I could have done it as well - or better - at home and feel ripped off. Not so at the White Hart. Vegetarian dishes are unusual and delicious and good value for money. I keep going back - and it has never disappointed
Excellent food, high quality service, nice atmosphere, good value for money given the quality of the food
