UMAI Japanese Kitchen & Sushi
Friday evening was too busy. We went there for daughter’s birthday, which has been a tradition, since it’s her favorite restaurant. No ice cream with a candle, which I never used to remind them for... felt rushed to leave since so many people without reservations were waiting up to 90 minutes to be seated. The food is excellent, as always, and the service, consistently good. However, we probably wouldn’t go back on a Friday evening.
A group of 7 went to lunch. Table and noise level made it possible for us to all chat, which is rare. Food was great and we had a relaxing lunch.
as a vegetarian, it isn't the most veg-friendly place. however, I think it is a great place to grab some high quality japanese food.
Great sushi and service :) We go to this place for about 5 years and it's very nice spot!
Service was good. Food was good but the drinks were much better than the food was.
Amazing experience as always! A lovely neighborhood gem in Printer’s Row/South Loop. Outdoor seating is also available in the warmer months.
i had there zaru soba with sushi, which was a decent portion with good value ($19). I loved the quail egg, ginger, and scallion in the soba sauce, which added much rich flavor. The only criticism I have for the place is that the waitress takes the plate away too fast. AS soon as we finished our appetizer (uni sushi), the waitress immediately took away our plates. Given that there were not many customers when we went with some empty tables, I wish they waited a bit (~5 min) after we finish our food to take plates away, not like 5 seconds later.
Some of the rolls were too moist and/or not wrapped tightly enough, but good overall.
Wonderful food wonderful prices. They were very helpful with my vegan friend!
The food is always great here, and the service friendly and efficient.
If you are looking for an affordable and chill evening after work, this is IT!! People and atmosphere are amazing.
Great food, service and all around experience! Bar seating is nice and lets you into the sushi chef's preparation of dishes going out to the dining area. Good selection of beer, sake and other libations. I recommend for a nice, casual sushi experience!
Great sushi and Japanese food. I love the cold soba dipping noodles with tempura and the sour plum and shiso nigiri. Fish eggs were super fresh.
They have sushi, ramen, udon, sukiyaki and everything. Many choices and either tastes nice. Good for a group to visit.
Great food, especially the sushi. Very reasonably priced and the service is excellent!
The food was just stunning and very reasonably priced.
The server was so attentive and pleasant. She was aware that in my my online reservation notes I described this was a birthday, so wanted to surprise with a dessert. The restaurant offered a complimentary dessert which I thought was so kind. The food was spectacular definitely lived up to the online description "an experience for the senses." I definitely hope to bring more family here -even kids. This is a very beautiful space that feels comfortable and accessible for families.
Umai has consistently been both my favorite Sushi restaurant and favorite Japanese restaurant in Chicago over the last several years. I strongly recommend the Chirashi or one of the other sashimi dons. You get a lot of fish and it is all very high quality. I lived in Japan so I'm pretty picky on fish but Umai has never let me down. On top of the excellent fish, they have a variety of exotic rolls (Surf and Turf is my favorite), and traditional rolls as well. Outisde of sushi, the excellence continues with a variety of noodle dishes (ramen, udon, etc.), Japanese meat dishes, and much much more. Also, go for the Hakutsuru Sake. You get a big bottle of it for 6 dollars and it is incredibly smooth. Can't recommend Umai enough!
We love this place. The only negative is getting seated can be complicated.
It was tasty!
Service was great and food was tasty
Front/Host situation seemed to be over their head and unorganized, but everything else was top notch.
We had wasabi shumai for appetizer, a good choice. The salmon teriyaki was an unusual cut, but well prepared and tasty. The nigiri and sashimi were excellent, both in presentation and in the size of the portions. This is an excellent restaurant with a large menu, although it's a bit noisy.
We were seated a half hour after our reservation. The food was mediocre at best.
Great go to sushi spot in that area. Would recommend, and I will be back.
Made a change to my reservation from 4 to 12 people within 1 hour of the reservation. They accomodated us with no issue. When we arrived the table was set for us and they were ready despite being right at the beginning of weekday busy hour. Service was outstanding and the food was brought to us quickly especially considering the dinner rush was starting and we had everyone in our party ordering non-family style. Food presented well and was extremely good. Nice job and highly recommended.
I love this restaurant for sushi and noodles, leaning towards the less frivolous rolls (I know cream cheese, sweet sauces, et al are now standards but not my flavor inclination, as would rather have more traditional Japanese dishes), but here, the fish is stupendously fresh and delicious as are the ramen and noodles.
Would prefer a less "energetic" soundtrack i.e. jazz, ambient, to create nicer dining experience, but overall, a great place
A great spot to relax and enjoy a delicious meal from an extensive menu. The flavours are genuine. The staff are friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
Excellent salmon pieces.
My boyfriend and I eat sushi and ramen quite often but he’s never tried the dippin type. The broth was so fishy, he couldn’t even eat it and requested the Tonkotsu broth instead which wasn’t good either. I order one roll and 2 halves for us and they were all just okay. Service and ambiance were good but I don’t think we will be back. Plenty of better places in the surrounding area.
Noice sushi. Toight atmosphere. Cool cool cool cool cool.
Ambiance was fun. Food was good. Raman noodles were awesome. Rolls were unique. Service was good.
Great place on weekends
Great service. We mentioned to waitress that we needed to be finished in time to see a set at the Jazz Showcase and she made it happen.
Impressed with server as she or kirchen made an error on my 7 piece sashimi which included a spicy tuna roll.
As a result I got a 10 piece sashimi dinner and she gave me the roll which was not included, all at the same price as the 7 piece- that's the kind of service that keeps you coming back for more.
MY FAVORITE SUSHI in Chicago!! The Mexicana Roll is fantastic!! This place is way better than those over priced restaurants in river north. This place rocks my socks off. Love it and their iced green tea!
One of the best Sushi places I’ve been in Chicago!
Went for early dinner on a Thursday evening and was seated right away. Good food and clean modern interior. Sushi was the best that we have found in the loop. We will be going back. Only downside is the space is small and the tables are very close so you basically have no choice but to listen to everyone's conversations.
Nice place. Maki rolls was good, I will definitely go back.
Food was fairly good, service was attentive. Only issue we had was the heated bench seats were too hot. The waitress was aware of the issue, said they are working on fixing it, and offered to reseat us, so no complaints.
